3 stars seems about right for this place. We were visiting Atlanta and came here for lunch because it is an Atlanta "establishment." It was insanely crowded, but considering that the line moved pretty fast. I just got a chili dog. The dog itself was nothing special, and the "chili" on top reminded me of Taco Bell mystery meat. That said, it was not offensive. My husband got a bacon cheeseburger, onion rings, and the orange dreamsicle type drink. The onion rings and orange drink were pretty good (I didn't sample the cheeseburger). My sister got the peach pie and I don't see what all the fuss is about. We didn't even finish eating it. I can't say any of the food was amazing, but there is just something satisfying about indulging in really greasy fast food when it is not a normal part of your diet. That said, glad to have tried this place, but not so sure I'll be craving it again. read more

Usually the food there is great and some good service , But last Saturday at around 4 pm time frame i popped I for a good meal , i was not satisfied set all. The service sucked i waited 20 minutes and only saw1 guy running from car to car ,one lady chewed out the attendant for no service. I think I'll try another place for good food. read more

If you're here for a couple days, and don't mind an ok meal, then definitely visit Varsity. The locals, or people familiar with Atlanta, will always suggest this place as a must try due to historic reasons (and since it's been there since 1928). Would I go again? Absolutely not. As a lot of review accurately put it, Varsity is a place where you get a tiny amount of over priced low quality food with a side of rudeness and large cup of attitude. The burgers are slightly better than McDonald's and the fries aren't that great either. When I say tiny, I mean it. I mean palm size tiny. Their varsity orange soda...i don't even know how to describe it. Though they have some solid onion rings, I'll say that. The place is rather large and one of the few places around that part of town with parking. Now, let me reiterate, if you're here for a short while and have the time to gamble a lunch, check it out. This place is really nothing more than a giant high school stadium concession stand. I appreciate that they've been around for 90+ years but I think that's out of nostalgia and tradition rather than quality or uniqueness. I dropped in for a weekday lunch and was greeted by a couple hundred kids there for lunch during a field trip... all of them ordering for themselves... with cash. So obviously I waited for quite a while. Cashiers didn't seem super thrilled either but mine was super nice to me. I ordered a #1 (two chili dogs) with cheese, rings, a small "FO," and peach tea. The chili dogs were small (1/8# on a fat day) and seemed to come out of a Walmart budget family pack just like the buns and sliced American cheese. The chili was overcooked and dry like it had come out of a bomb shelter's food storage. The onion rings were nothing special either... deep fried with thin, tasteless batter. The peach tea was tasty but incredibly syrupy. The iconic FO (Frozen Orange) was good. It's a mix of their Varsity Orange (essentially orange Koolaid) and vanilla icecream. Calling it a shake is misleading as it doesn't have the thick consistency of a shake. Instead, I'd compare it more to drinking a partially melted creamsicle. The Varsity is located in Downtown Atlanta on North Avenue on 2 square acres (this is one of seven locations). The original Varsity was opened in 1928 by Frank Gordy with a dedication to freshness and superior quality. The Downtown location can accommodate up to 600 cars and 800 people inside the restaurant. The Varsity is the largest drive-in in the world and is a major staple in the Metro Atlanta area known world wide. Truly iconic and a multitude of famous people have eaten here, from celebrities to Presidents. During my visit to the Varsity I dined-in and had a #1 and #3 (2 Chili Dogs with Onion Rings and Glori (Glorified) Bacon Cheese burger with Fries). The hot dogs where great and the chili was meaty and delicious. It was my favorite kind of chili, the kind without beans. The dogs came on white bread buns and everything was hot and delectable. The burger was incredible with an obvious taste of a seasoned griddle. The condiments very firm, crisp and fresh. The fries were hand cut fries and were cooked to a crisp salty golden brown. The fries were light and tasted of steamy goodness. The onion rings were good but I was a little disappointed. The rings were thick cut and the batter was light and flaky. #143 There is absolutely no way one can visit the city of ATL and not experience the Varsity. I remember as a kid coming here and eating and hanging out. We would sneak out late, ride the Marta down Peachtree St to North Ave, scurry into the Varsity, count our tiny little money we had and order our FO and onion rings, grab our free paper hats and hang out before trying to sneak into the Metroplex next door to see the punk rock bands and drink beer underage. Ahh... teenage memories ;) Let me say, not much changed. The "Plex" is no longer standing next door, but, the Varsity is still the same. We walked in after parking and the place was incredibly crowded, just like I remember. We grabbed our paper hats, just like I remember. You could smell the grease permeating the air, just like I remember. And when you finally approached the counter they yell at you, "What'll ya' have?!" Just like I remember. I ordered the famous FO (that is a frosted orange shake type drink that tastes something like baby aspirin), chicken tenders with slaw and those famous onion rings. My companion got two glorified burgers, two chili dogs with slaw and those delicious onion rings too. Did I mention the sweet tea yet? You get your red tray and meander up the stairs to one of the many seating places. There are TV rooms where you can catch the GA game, or other rooms where you can see the skyline of ATL, or other places where you can simply stand at a red bar and eat your greasy and delicious food. We grabbed a table upstairs and unloaded our tray. My FO was even better than I remember if that is even possible. The onion rings were absolutely fabulous and they still have these little shakers of cajun seasoning on the tables with the salt and pepper so that you can spice up your meal. I poured it all over everything, yummy! I love the Varsity and pray it never changes. This location of the Varsity is an Atlanta institution...and notorious tourist trap...serving up chili dogs and fried goods for almost 90 years. The experience is a madhouse: a massive building boasting the world's largest drive-in and room for 800 diners indoors will ensure a crush of people during the lunch rush (which is exactly when we popped in). You'll likely be waiting a good 10-15 minutes to place your order at the counter and might spend as long trying to find seating. I kept my order simple: chili dog, side of onion rings, small frosted orange. The Varsity makes a fine dog: just spiced enough and with just enough snap, while the dry chili sauce has a good amount of bite, with a swipe of mustard a must. The onion rings were better than expected, bringing more flavour than just oil and onion, and the frosted orange (think cafeteria style orange drink meets Wendy's frosty) refreshing. I have eaton at the Varsity twice, both times all I can say is cardiovascular disease in a bag. The onion rings here are just caked in oil, dripping, it is extreme. Even after coming in with extremely low expectation, the food here was still beyond disappointing. Heck, it made me miss McD! The glorified burger was so dry and tasteless, and the onion rings were poorly fried and were sitting out in the cold. That being said, to dine in this retro drive-in diner is an experience of its own, and the burger combo is somewhat cheap with $6 for a burger plus fries or onion rings. First trip to Atlanta...you know I had to see whats up with The Varsity. As much as I love food? It was inevitable. I get to know food like I get to know people, don't show me foie gras to impress me when you're straight up americana. The Varsity for me was definitely worth the time and travel...if for no other reason than to hear the cashier shout those iconic words "What'll you have!" Atmosphere: Walking around and looking at all the nostalgic pictures on the wall, of both The Varsity of yesteryears and the celebrities (current and classic) that have passed through was awesome. However, it was as if all of Atlanta decided to go to The Varsity for lunch at that particular time, on that particular day. I justtttt looked for any sign of a line and stood there. There were workers covering every inch of the floor behind the counter, so the food was going out at a rapid pace, and before i knew it, I was ordering. Food: Hard to decide, everything on the menu screamed "heart attack special," so I let my stomach decide. Somehow I ended up with two chilli cheese dogs (no mustard, I loathe mustard), onions rings, soda, andddd for the extra artery clogging effect my stomach added a fried apple pie to top things off. I know, right? The food honestly wasn't anything to brag about. Don't get me wrong, it was good, just not "Don't talk to me right now cuz I'm stuffing my face" good. As an Atlanta native who grew up eating here before a Braves' game a few times a year or when my grandparents were in town and my dad knew how much Granddaddy loved it because it reminded him of his favorite drive-in/diner in Rome, I can't help but have a soft spot for this city institution. Best food - no way - whether hamburgers, hotdogs or whatever, no matter how you order them ("One burger, walk it through the garden, side of onion rings") - there's still, to me, something awesome about getting a little grease to go with an FO (I loved creamsciles as a kid so I always loved these) every now and again. Most of the employees have been there for decades and I personally love how there are so many levels and different rooms. Good for a couple or a group. Long live The Varsity! read more

It's funny because I almost always end up agreeing with other reviewers. I read all the reviews saying The Varsity was only famous because it was an Atlanta staple and that the hot dogs are garbage, so I was fully expecting to hate it. Maybe that's why I ended up loving it? I don't know. I don't even like hot dogs on a normal basis, but there was something different about their dawgs. I ordered the chili cheese dog with pimento cheese and an orange freeze. I also nibbled off my husband's onion rings and slaw with pimento cheese dog. (You have to specifically ask for the pimento cheese or else they will just give you plain cheddar.) The onion rings were the g-d greatest rings that I've tasted with a substantial amount of batter, so that they don't just fall apart when you bite into them. I wish that they gave you more in one order because I felt fat when we devoured them in less than 20 seconds. The chili is.... not very good, in my opinion. Someone else wrote that it tastes grainy and I would agree with that thought. My favorite chili dog that I've ever had was at Pink's and I can say that this chili doesn't even come close to the perfection that is served up at Pink's. The slaw dog with the pimento was perfect. It sounded weird to me at first, but the gooey cheese was directly on top of the dog so it melted. The slaw on top offered a cooling taste and was divine. There was something insane about the bun too. I usually order everything sans bun, but I figured I was on vacation so I was going to carbo-load as much as I wanted. The bun reminded me of the split top buns that you get with lobster rolls. The major pro about The Varsity is that their food is hella cheap too. I'm pretty sure our entire order cost right around $10. I definitely recommend at least trying this place if you're in the area. Coming here was like going to a Six Flags amusement park... It isn't as clean as Disney World, but it has rides, it's in the area, and it provides something to do. There's something to be said about eating at a storied historical Atlanta landmark. This place is an event, with it's huge building, easy freeway access, two story parking garage and the view of the Atlanta skyline. Long lines, tons of tourists, paper cook hat giveaways and an ice cream station make this burger joint an eating experience. But that's just the experience... Let's get to the food. I had a double burger with bacon and the onion rings. The rings were legit, but the burger was a horrifying piece of dried out roadkill. The bacon had a chemical taste indicating more lab experiment than proper farming techniques. And the burger came out looking all squished like the server had put it between her thighs as she walked to get the other components of the meal. My lunch mate had the two slaw dogs which he described (kindly) as high school cafeteria food. He liked the steak style thick cut fries though. Come here for the history and the experience. I can't ever truly respect someone who says they don't like The Varsity. If you claim to be an Atlanta native and dare to say such, then you should have your membership card revoked and be sent back to Cobb County or whatever suburb you grew up in. As I have said before, icons are icons for a reason, and The Varsity is one for several reasons - the hot dog (good, not great - weak chili); the Frosted Orange (it's a Frost Orange, for God's Sake); the Onion Rings (if only for the grease); but primarily for THE EXPERIENCE - and the experience is at the original location. This is a funky piece of culinary history which a person can still visit, and experience personally. It serves Southern chili dogs, the wiener is not in a casing, natural or otherwise. If you don't like the classic chili dog, you probably don't want to come here. People who go to iconic restaurants, and then complain because the food they were served was exactly what the restaurant was famous for, are more than a little silly. The Varsity is... well, The Varsity. I mean that in a good way. They are famous for a reason. Is it the best food in the world?... So I'm from South Florida, we don't have The Varsity, or Cookout... I was SUPER excited to try this establishment as I've heard so much about it. I pass the HUGE midtown location every day on the way to work. I've patiently waiting nearly two months for the right time to try it out. I wanted a late night, binging snack. Finally the time came, it was about 9:30 and I was CRAVING something greasy & salty. I called my other ~non local ~ friends and we all headed to The Varsity. The drive up dining was so neat. It's the best of both worlds, you don't have to get out of your car or wait til your home & food is cold. I was surprised how large the restaurant is, you could fit at least 3 McDonald's on the property. Finally the food came, it smelt great. We each grabbed a fry and had the same reaction.... meh ‍ The fries were soft & had very little salt. We decided to go home so we could throw them in the toaster oven & add some salt ourselves. The burgers were good, but nothing different from any other fast food location. The chicken nuggets were definitely a step up from other fast food chains, but you could find better in the frozen section of Publix. Basically, there was A LOT of hype and I was left underwhelmed.
