Service and atmosphere are really good. Cocktails were great. And all of our dishes were excellent, save one. We shared the seasonal bruschetta, a salad, steak frites, and the lobster cresti di gallo. Unfortunately the lobster dish just doesn't work, and I'm not sure how it made it to the menu. Some citrus makes sense with seafood, but the lemon here was overpowering. Avoid it. If we'd ordered the shrimp and grits this would probably be a much higher review. read more

This was my second time to VC- first time was with my fiancé months ago (fabulous) and second time was tonight with coworkers. This second visit was exceptional, not only because of the food and wine, but because of our server Courtney. They were the prime example of attentive, yet courteous. They understood the dynamic of the table, seating arrangements, dietary restrictions, etc. and made us all feel so welcomed and not like a burden. This was our third night in a row of team dinners and, while we were all exhausted, it was the best dinner we have had as a team to date. Parts of this restaurant were incredibly charming. The owner stopped by our table and was lovely and so kind. I really wanted to love this place. The waitstaff needs to be improved, however. Our waiter took one drink order (a table of 5, we ordered a bottle of wine to share). When the waiter brought the bottle, he didn't know how to pronounce the label and made a joke about it... ok. We also ordered a charcuterie board, and the server who brought it didn't know what 2 of the cheeses were. Once our meals were served, the waiter never came back to ask if we'd like another bottle or another drink. After we finished our meals, the dirty plates sat on our table for OVER 30 minutes. Our waiter was working several tables, and I kept trying to make eye contact to show him we were finished, but he refused to look our way. I finally had to call the owner back over and ask him to have someone clear our plates. Some of our plates had a really strong odor and it was very off-putting after a while. If the waiter had come back, we likely would have ordered another bottle of wine, but by this time we were all frustrated and ready to leave. The food was ok... one of us got the Steak Frites (he liked it), two of us got the Salmon (not bad, but it tasted like it had been soaked in dill pickle juice), and two of us got the Shrimp & Grits (one person took 2 bites and pushed it aside). The entire dinner took over 3 hours, which is a bit too long for me. If you have tons of time, are easy to please, and are fine with one beverage you may really like this place. read more

Went on a Thursday and enjoyed one of the wine flights with a spot on but succinct description from our waiter that was perfect. Chicken lollipops for a starter followed by the beet salad which was great. Steak frites for the main and it was fabulous. Date night with the wifey for her birthday so thought we'd give them a try. Pretty new place, I think 4 months or so. Impressions: 1. I had conjured up in my head, based on the name, that this place would be cozy, dark, intimate. You know like a velvet cellar. And while the setting is cool, it was just a little sterile for me. Maybe some rugs and a few curtains between some tables would have warmed it up. 2. While we didn't have wine, the wine list was deep and the co-owner is a wine guy so that is always fun to work with them to choose a good wine with your dinner. 3. The food was really, really solid. I would have happily ordered anything on the menu. We're weren't super hungry so we didn't order anything from the appetizer list but it looked great especially for a group. I did have the shrimp and grits and it was very good, the best I've had in Denver. Would definitely order it again. They certainly brought in their southern heritage there. My wife had the vegetable risotto which was also quite fantastic! We left full!! 4. Service was lacking a bit. Our server was knowledgeable and engaging but we were left alone with empty drinks for far too long. Looked like they could have used one more server or a floater to help out. Also, when making the reservation I mentioned birthday and when speaking to the owner I also mentioned birthday but no effort was made to even mention it. Kind of a bummer. 5. Beverages. Great Old Fashioned. Super enjoyable. Other interesting drinks on the menu. Sitting at the bar would probably have been the right play. But make no mistake the food and drink here are extremely good and worthy of a try. The other little things are just that, little things. I would definitely recommend this place to others. read more

We (wife and I) were fortunate to get a reservation for Velvet Cellars soft opening last night and were pleased with the food, cocktails and service. Started with craft cocktails (VC Old Fashion and a Manhattan) and then moved on to wine, Scotch Olives, Shrimp & Grits and Steelhead Risotto. VC Old Fashion was built on Laws whiskey and did not disappoint. Generous pour. The stuffed olives were wrapped with aged beef, Spanish pork and breadcrumbs and then fried. Served on a bed of arugula with a smoked tomato crema. Interesting tasty combination (only suggestion would be a few more seconds in teh fryer to add a bit more heat). On to the Shrimp and Grits: amazing grits with four tender red shrimp and a bacon/cheddar/pepper sauce that had a bit of smoky flavor. Rich and perfect portion size. Also loved the Steelhead Trout with basil pesto risotto and oyster mushrooms. Trout was cooked perfectly and the risotto was rich and creamy. All was great with the knowledge that this was their first night. Room for improvement on execution but this is to be expected (thus four stars). Ambiance inside needs a bit of attention (assume this is being addressed and while it is good, it has the potential to be great). Looking forward to going back. read more
