The new owners did a nice job with the menu and staff. Nepalese themed with American comfort touches. Norbu was our server. He was attentive without being overbearing and knowledgeable with a great personality. The Texas style BBQ over potato salad with pickled onions was perfect. The Momo dumpling platter was tasty with chicken, beef and veggie filling plus dipping sauce. But the grilled rack of lamb was the best. It was crusted with herbs that worked well together and was perfectly cooked med-rare, with creamy mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables rosemary lamb au jus. Plus we picked a warm day so we could sit in the upper patio area with a great view of the bay and setting sun. We'll be back. read more

Cute restaurant trying to find its footing. Food and service are the high points, though dishes like Sweet and Savory Root Vegetable Blend are not a complete meal, even with a salad, for most people. Unsure that the overhead screens with fireplaces add anything to the ambiance. Music could be turned down a notch or two. The TV in the bar showing sports, while it might be appreciated by some, perhaps should be off weekend nights -- no one was watching the NASCAR race (unclear why the Warriors game wasn't on). Would prefer dessert menu to be a menu, rather than a plastic doodad on the table. Actual menu would be easier to read without background. Restaurant's menu prices on its own website are about 10% lower than the actual prices as of this writing (11-02-2024). read more

Really liked the restaurant. Would give 4.5 stars if possible. Calamari was delicious and well fried. Had the New York steak which was good but a bit overcooked for medium rare. The Chicken with Alfredo sauce was delicious. The flavor of the 1/2 roast chicken was good, but it was a bit dry. They are dog friendly and the service was excellent. Had the flourless chocolate cake for dessert which was really good. Overall experience was great and will definitely go back, especially because they are so dog-friendly. read more

Tried first time tonight for dinner. Great space and location. Food was a bit mediocre for the price. The "beet" salad had one beet underneath a pound of arugula. Fries were cold and soggy. We had a wonderful dinner at the Walnut Tavern! I noted in my reservation that it was our ten-year anniversary, and the staff made the night very special--an awesome table, a personal congrats, and a complimentary dessert. We loved the ambiance--it's little, quiet, perfectly lit, lots of warm wood. Our meal was great. I especially recommend the New York Steak. We left feeling well cared for and grateful to have found this hidden gem. read more

I paid $16 for the Texas-style BBQ ribs and received two dry, small, overcooked ribs over small mounds of mashed potatoes and two celery sticks on the side. The ribs were very bad, had no flavor, and were hard to chew. Would not recommend. First time trying and will not be going back. read more

Had a delightful birthday lunch on the 'rooftop' with old friends, one of whom is a regular patron of the restaurant. Our server Cameron greeted my friend and the rest of us with genuine warmth. We ordered beet salad, the prawn dish on 'toast', and fish and chips (very lightly battered and crisp)....plus drinks. The food was delicious and nicely plated. Prices are reasonable and portions generous. The owners and staff are lovely and it really feels like a family endeavor. WTB&G is such a pleasant alternative to the louder, more hectic 'happening' restaurants. I now understand why this is the default (in a good way) restaurant of my Berkeley friend. read more

We had a small going away lunch here. The service was exemplary. The staff set up a table in the patio for us but it was too sunny (the umbrellas were being used for other tables). They brought a table from downstairs and set us up indoors, upstairs. Meanwhile the patio cleared out. We asked them if it would be possible to be seated outdoor since we could now use the umbrellas to shield us from the sun. The young man (son of one of the owners) set us up again outdoors. He rearrange the umbrellas so we had some shade...and did it all with a smile and a friendly attitude. The food was excellent. The rare short-rib sandwich I had was wonderful (a hamburger made with meat from the short rib). It was the best burger I've had in awhile. And the french fries were killer - crispy and flavorful on the outside, tender on the inside. The beet salad with chicken was a meal in itself. It was flavorful and quite refreshing. The person who ordered the vegetable panini said she enjoyed it. We were the only customers upstairs but the server kept tabs on us. We didn't have to ask for water or beverage fill ups. We also didn't feel rushed. It was a wonderful experience. The only down side is that parking can be difficult to find. Next time I go, I'll call a ride service. read more

This was a welcome surprise, a restaurant that does not disappoint! The servers were all delightful and attentive and the food is superlative. Started with the calamari which was wonderful and the delicious momos. Then ate the rack of lamb which was perfectly cooked. A great value too. At any other place this would have cost a lot more. (When the silent landscapes gallery on the big-screen TV switched to an obscure, scenic Asian location, my bartender casually mentioned "I'm from there.") This new ownership has nicely resurrected what used to be the friendly, local Chester's brunch spot. Owners in between tried a pricey French restaurant (trying to leverage proximity to Chez Panisse) and an Italian spot, neither of which worked. Walnut Tavern has been deservedly solid for years, and seems here to stay. read more

Went to Walnut Tavern on Saturday night with some friends. They have a lovely outside patio upstairs which overlooks the Bay. It was very pleasant and once it got chilly they turned on a heat lamp which kept us warm. The food was very good and the service was excellent and vey friendly. We had the chicken Alfredo, club sandwich, veggie panini, and veggie medley. They were all very good and well prepared. Overall it was an excellent experience and would highly recommend. read more

Food is okay, I had the chicken dish it can be improved, need some seasoning, my friend had the fish and chips, he said, I guess the restaurant is not known for the dish.... over cooked and you can tell the oil is old, coz you can taste it feom the batter. We went to the Tavern during their soft opening and had a fantastic meal. We started with the shrimp scampi over linguini and the salmon, both of which were cooked perfectly, and ended European style with a tomato and mozzarella salad. The restaurant's ambiance was low-key, yet upscale; the staff was friendly and welcoming, and the menu varied and exciting. The newly remodeled Tavern with its TVs, fine food, and full bar is now my go-to neighborhood spot. I can't wait to come back, hang out with friends, try something new on the menu, and watch the Warriors games read more

Great food and very accommodating service. We wanted to watch NBA finals and they found us a perfect table. The food is amazing, very tasty and well prepared. We had the burger (huge) and fish and chips. The fish was evenly battered, not overcooked (a common problem) and well portioned. The only reason I pull a star is because the meal took long to serve and they didn't clean our appetizer dishes right away after we were done (thus also missing opportunity to upsell more drinks too).
