Wanted to speak about this experience with a manager, Dominque, and he was the rudest restaurant staff I've encountered in recent memory, especially in a costal setting. Funny thing? I've been a regular since last spring. I loved this place. I've written great reviews on it. Location, service, food? My. How things change... in 9 or 10 months! I can't even believe I'm giving this place 1 star. Horrendous service. This came from the kitchen, and management, not the waitress. SUPER Rude bar manager. He was too busy blabbing with his 2 bar patrons to make our drinks or be bothered with trying solve a problem. Even more rude manager. It took 95 minutes for my dad to get his appetizer. Another of us got an app instead of the meal they asked for. And, her meal was burned, with an excuse that the oil was bad. Bad? Old? Rancid? Because that's what happens when your oil is rotten. Get rid of it. We asked for things to change. But, it kept getting worse for thus table of six in an otherwise empty restaurant. I still paid. Cash. $300 on a $287 tab. I'm not even sure they removed the burned shrimp. I just paid the dang tab to get the heck out of there before it got worse. I'd have left her $350. A $63 tip. That poor server. The management put her in a very bad position. Good job, management. This place has all the things going for it that it needs to be successful. But, it's a disaster. That is the extent of the positive I'm afraid so go with this in mind. Menu has been changed over last year and mostly sandwich/ taco/ bowl items. Hamburgers were mostly ok but burritos and bowls varied from inedible to marginally edible. Unripe avocados, over filled burritos with mostly pico de gallo and very little else come to mind. Staffing shortages like everyone else, but we certainly got that and were very patient-- but it is hard to want to go back to a place when after waiting forever for food, that the food is cold, and just poor. read more

Needed a getaway and decided to spend a few days in Lewes. First night here and knew I needed to find dinner with a sunset view and this didn't disappoint. Server Mackenzie B. was awesome and super attentive, checking in often to see if I needed anything, while not rushing me away from that sunset view. It was a Monday night and there were tables available, so I wasn't holding up a table from another party. Oysters were perfectly shucked, no shell splinters to be found and no shredded oyster pieces, nicely briny and came with two horseradish accompaniments. The grouper was light and flaky, breaded and fried, and the crunchy cabbage and radish plus creamy avocado and key lime aioli made a great combination. I was a huge fan of Wheelhouse for several reasons, and I think it's the perfect place to take someone who's touring Lewes for the first time, which is what happened with me! It's right by the water where all the boats are docked so you get a fantastic view! You can also park at the restaurant and walk a little bit around town if you end up having to wait in line for a table. You can walk across the bridge next to the restaurant and then you're only a few short blocks away from downtown Lewes. Overall, it's a great location. We definitely wanted to sit outside on the dock for dinner, and we didn't have to wait long this time. We got a booth table, and ordered several things that night. We each got a strawberry basil mojito, which was delicious and refreshing. I ordered the Shucker's choice half dozen oysters and the catfish tacos with a side of waffle fries. My friend had the Caribbean jerk salmon dish, which was a special entree on the specials menu that day. All the food was so, so good!!! These were definitely some of the best oysters I've ever had, which wasn't a surprise since we were literally right by the water and they probably got the oysters extremely fresh. I just wish I knew where the oysters I got were from, since I ordered the Shucker's choice! My tacos were really good too, a great portion size for two tacos (which I was worried about because two tacos can sometimes not be enough if the tacos are small, but these were very large, stuffed tacos!), and really well priced for the amount of food you got. The waffle fries were to-die-for amazing!!! They had similar seasoning to Chickie and Pete's fries, but were waffle fries. Overall it was great food. My only warning/negative was that service could still use some work at the restaurant, which is understandable since it's on the newer-side. My friend had placed an order, but the complete wrong dish came out initially. It ended up being fine because she placed a new order and charged us less, but we did have to wait a bit longer than usual. I also would have appreciated if the waitress could have told me more about the oysters I ordered, since I did order the Shucker's choice expecting to eventually get to know what the "Shucker" chose for me to try, but I understand. That can be difficult and hard to do on the service side when a restaurant is starting out. We chose this place for it's outdoor seating on the deck by the water. Tables were well spaced from other tables. Staff were all masked, as were customers coming and going. Food was good and portions generous. I ordered Ahi Tacos with side of Mac and Cheese. Not over the top, but fresh and good. Ended up taking the side home for dinner. Hubby had the pulled pork tacos with waffle fries. No complaints from his side of the table. Bloody Marys were pretty standard. Could have used some horseradish to jazz it up. The wheelhouse is a great little waterfront bar and grill, bugs deck area for seating near the water. The food is very flavorful! Absolutely loved my chorizo burger! The "dirty shrimp" was a great starter even though they brought it out with our main course. A new restaurant opening in a building where another place had been can often cause problems but my wife and I had a really good time here. The service was friendly prompt and attentive without being cloying. You can sit inside in a nicely done up area or outside on the dock for atmosphere. We both enjoyed out food and the 'crab poutine appetizer' was a whole meal on it's own, a huge freaking plate piled with waffle cut fries a sauce carrying just a little heat and lots of crab meat worked in. the one downside to the evening and it was minor, was the cheese on the poutine. It wasn't melted in, it was little bits of mozzarella that looked like nothing so much as , I swear I'm not making this up, mini-marsh mellows. They hadn't melted or rendered down in the heat. They added nothing to the flavor profile and did nothing but make me think maybe a nice cup of cocoa was in order. Truth be told I really wanted to go to Kindle for chicken last night but they had a 40 min wait so we came here for the 1st (and last) time. The Pros - the waiter was super, super friendly! My entree, the beef medallions, were actually pretty good. The Cons - the crab soup was boring, no crab and it was on the verge of being cold. Def NOT hot. The crab dip was runny and disgusting. I love crab dip and order it mostly everywhere I go. This was gross. I absolutely hated the menu. It took me forever to decide what to eat because nothing really stood out. Lastly, with the not so great appetizers and not so great menu they have nerve to be expensive too. Definitely won't be back but we did appreciate the friendly waiter! read more

The basis for the five stars is that Wheelhouse has a great waterfront location and food quality that is very good and keeps improving. For what it is (very casual bar/pub/bistro) it is at the top of its game. We've been coming here for 7+ years and the food quality just keeps getting better. Today, wife had pulled chicken sandwich that she LOVED, and I went with a $10 special -- chorizo-meatloaf sandwich; and it was excellent. Great flavor, spice and texture. Add Blue Moon beer and great service, and I can't see any reason to give less than five stars. read more

Just got home from dinner at the wheelhouse and I've got to say, I wasn't very happy with the food for the price!! 3 of the people in our group ordered tacos which ranged in price but was about $12. The tacos came with chips and an upgrade to fries cost an extra $2. When the tacos came out, there were only 2 per order and the "filling" wasn't very good. One was overpowered by the flavor of soy sauce and one was simply pulled pork on a taco shell. Right after we were served dinner the power went out due to a storm in the area. There were no emergency lights in the restaurant and some of the lights in the bathrooms were not working. We were forced to finish our dinner by cellphone flashlight. The staff did do a good job of trying to check on everyone, but I overheard them offer a round of drinks to a table near us while we were offered nothing and there were no adjustments to our bill. So, unless there's some dramatic changes to the menu or staff. I think tonight's phone-lit dinner will probably be my family's last dinner at the wheelhouse. read more

A friend and I had dinner in the early evening yesterday. It was possibly the worst dining experience I have had in years. We both ordered the seafood stew and Caesar salads. The stew came in a small shallow bowl and was cool; at $9 each, it was a rip-off. Our salads were very soggy and drenched in far too much dressing. I told the waitress that they were inedible and asked for new salads. The new salads were not as soggy but they lacked the parmesan cheese that was on the first salad. We've been coming here for 50 years, and it's still solid. We had frozen Piña Coladdas which were very refreshing, and the Burrata Caprese to start, which was fresh and delicious. I had steamed shrimp, which were perfectly cooked. My husband had a smash burger which was fine, and the slaw was good! The best was sitting by the dock watching the water and the boats. Honestly, Service was slower than I've ever experienced. The bartender lied to us and told us there was no manager on site because they were so understaffed... yet, the bartender and the "chef" in the back were both titled as managers. The bartender treated us like garbage, and so did the "manager"-"chef". WE WERE THE ONLY TABLE IN THE ENTIRE RESTAURANT- YET IT STILL TOOK OVER AND HOUR + TO RECIEVE Food tasted great an hour and a half after we ordered it, but wasn't great enough to wait that long for. I would not recommend going to this restaurant if you're looking for the combination of good food and good service, I don't even recommend going here if you want mediocre service. Also- the manager with red hair and a beard, put his hands on me not once, but twice. The patrons at the bar, after the manager harassed my entire family, including my 76 year old angel of a grandmother, continued to tell us to go back to Jersey (mind you, I'm from California- I have absolutely no accent)- illiterate and assholes? The committed patrons to this establishment go hand and hand with the management. Completely unacceptable. If I could give this restaurant a 0/5 stars, purely based on the AWFUL experience we had, I would. I'm embarrassed, as a service provider myself (handling 50-75 customers at once), I'm genuinely surprised that anyone would EVER treat a customer the way these men treated my family. Great location nice view of the canal in downtown Lewes I wish they would do something with their kitchen. I'm sure in their other restaurants like Paradise Grill this may pass for food but in Lewes it really doesn't cut it. Calling two very skimpy tacos a meal is quite generous. Three People at my table could not finish their meal. One ordered steamed mussels. They were covered with oil and there was a quarter inch of oil in the bottom of the bowl no broth no seasoning and all you taste it was grease. I think she ate too and didn't finish it. Here's the good: the views of the canal and old Lewes are beautiful. Also, they have a fabulous staff; every time we've gone the waiters and hosts have been especially friendly and polite. But after this last meal, we won't be going back. It's the second time we've gotten a meal so salty that it was inedible. (And I like salty food!) We had an early dinner there on March 26. We had a friendly server who described the daily specials. Our drinks arrived, my margarita glass was filthy and the water glasses still had lipstick marks on the rims. My slow roasted pork roast French dip sandwich on cheddar bread turned up to be a hard roll with dry, chewy pulled pork covered in bbq sauce. My husband had chicken wings which were tasteless and dry. Our friendly waiter never returned, we couldn't flag down anyone for more water. It was our first time there and sadly our last. No vacation in Lewes would be complete without a refreshing drink or a canal side dinner outside on the lively spacious multi level deck. The two restaurants on this side of the drawbridge boast free parking, music and nightlife. The Wheelhouse like many of its predecessors hit some rough spots as far as food went, it was a tourist trap, a very beautiful one. Well, those were growing pains, so check the date on bad reviews. The food is awesome now. Do not miss the grouper fingers, they're gigantic! I also recommend the tuna burrito and my husband was very happy with his cooked to order burger. Reasonable prices too. If I had one suggestion to Zoggs.... Although you have umbrellas out on the deck. It's too hot in July and August. Invest in some really large shade sails, big enough to cover the entire deck. They had them before covid, but those shade sails were too small. The umbrellas really only shade for 1-2 people on a table for 6. I get it, you have the covered area with fans, but check out how many people really sit out during the hot months on the deck for lunch. IMO it's just too hot Enough about that...
