The inside is a book store but, also has a bar that serves coffees, teas and various alcoholic drinks. They have outdoor seating at the front when you come in (both in the yard and on the patio), seating inside (both at the bar and around the books), and a large back patio with picnic table seating & a small stage - sometimes they'll have live events (open mics, dances, etc.) During the day I like to grab a (non-alcoholic based) coffee and either read a book or, do some work on my laptop / write. I wish I lived in bishop arts, so I could just come to wild detectives everyday. This coffee shop / bookstore / bar / music venue really seems like it has it all. I love the rainy street vibe of a store built into a house. Thankfully this place doesn't have the chaos of rainy street. It's small and intimate inside, and it has a patio in the back for music shows. If you're a book lover like me, you'll love drinking beverages around these books. It's a small collection, but a good mixture of old and new. I stopped by because I wanted to buy some books and had always seen this place while in bishop arts for other things. I got a tea. This place is pretty great. The vibe is relaxed. Comfortable. If it weren't for the strangers around you, you'd think you were at home. And it looks nothing like my home. Had a working meeting with a friend who selected this cute little coffee shop/bar/bookstore hybrid in Bishop Arts for us to meet. For a Sunday early afternoon, it wasn't too crowded inside and they had pretty standard fare: espresso, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, some baked goods and empanadas. I ordered the hot chocolate and my friend ordered the tea and both were great. Lots of books to select from as well so plenty to peruse while enjoying a drink and/or a snack. Two star deduction for the parking and WiFi situations. First, there isn't much in the way of parking and I circled for a while looking for a spot. I ended up finding street parking a quarter mile away and walked over. And second, they "turn off" their WiFi on weekends and after 6pm on weekdays. Huh??? I'm used to people using laptops to work in coffee shops and I was a little aggravated after schlepping mine the blocks I walked to get there only to find I wouldn't be able to get online. This was my first visit to The Wild Detectives, and I was impressed! I love that it's a combination book store and coffee shop, and it definitely has a "rustic and comfortable" feel to it. We visited The Wild Detectives late one Saturday evening, in a party of four, desperately seeking some coffee to finish off the day. Unfortunately for me, the only decaf/non-caff beverages they had were teas... so I had a bag of peppermint tea, while my companions enjoyed their coffees. My party sat at a picnic table in the lot behind the shop, and were able to easily chat without there being too much noise or too many people around (both of which can be problems at other coffee shops). I'll absolutely return to The Wild Detectives the next time I'm in town! ... just earlier in the day, so that I can have caffeine. :) read more

It has been six years since the last time I came here. I must say as soon as I walked in, it still felt as cozy as I remembered it being. Like home. Staff isn't always friendly or attentive and the drinks and food are way overpriced for the quality. The atmosphere is very relaxing. Book selection is ace, as is the patio. I was surprised to find Wild Detectives in between some houses in the Bishop Arts District. It's unassuming and blends right in. Because of this, you have to find parking on the street. It's a coffee shop mixed with a book shop along with alcohol offerings. I got their Lemon Chamomile tea ($4 incl. tip) which I enjoyed and you can get a refill since the tea bags have enough flavor. VENUE: It is conveniently (or not) located in the Bishop Arts District. Old home converted (like most of the venues in this area), you might miss it. There isn't a lot of seating indoors (maybe enough for 20 people?) but there are benches and table outside in the back. The bookstore portion is on your left as soon as you enter and the bar is to the back near the patio. Music will be playing, people will be softly murmuring, and you'll hear sounds of drinks shaken, stirred, pages flipping, fingers rattling on keyboards, and it will be glorious. FOOD/DRINK: They serve Emporium pies, and anyone will tell you that those pies are the bomb. I ordered their tea - I was told it was not their usual tea option so I'm not sure how to review that. Either way, it was your basic green tea. They also have local beer and wine options amongst your usual coffee beverages. SERVICE: The guys behind the counter who served me were quirky. It was very busy and they were bombarded with orders left and right and they seemed to have a case of "word vomit" where they would say anything and everything that would come to their minds. Dear Hipsters, Please regard this note as my official application to join your very trendy non-conforming social club. While I do not particularly favor indie-rock, find high-waisted jeans awful on my short torso, have too square of a head to pull off hats, and choose to online shop than browse thrift stores, I find that my heart is in the right place. I am culturally aware, love Urban Outfitters, listen to Imagine Dragons, own a very non-trendy-but-fashionable bike, and a huge fan of skinny jeans. Oh - and I have side-swept bangs that requires abrupt head-whipping to move it away from my face. I would like to be accepted into your hearts and into the amazing coffee hangout that is Wild Detectives. Their fantastic espresso makes me swoon into their comfortable, well-lit window-side sitting area. I hope to bring my laptop next time so I can study/blog on their communal working table. The obscure books make me want to peruse through the evening as I'm sipping on their superior cappuccinos. I'm grateful for their cocktail, wine, and beer options. Cute, quaint, and superbly stocked with bites and booze! I love this place. The vibe is nice. The eats are organic and tasty! The drinks are crisp and delicious. The tunes are fire! What more could you want from a bookstore?! This place is super eclectic. Located in the most independent neighborhood in Dallas, The Wild Detectives is a hub fir learning and connecting. There's WiFi but only until 6. There are, again, decadent bites from cheese broads to extravagant toasts and supreme drinks from tea, to coffee, to fine wine, and local ciders! There's a good amount of seating and parking is off of the street. The area is lively and this is a great place to do some people watching while reading a good book and sipping a nice chai tea or handcrafted cocktail. Speaking of cocktails, there are a list of divine custom seasonal cocktails drawn on the wall to the left of the bar. I almost forgot to mention, there's a bar! There's also couch, table, and additional countertop seating and ample outside spots to cop a squat as well. I really enjoyed the ambiance of the place but be mindful there's music playing and might even be light to mild banter going on. The WiFi is turned off inaccessible after 6 to promote quality time. I think that's cool. You can use your hot spot if you need to! The service is impeccable. I came on a Tuesday night and the young lady at the bar seemed to be working alone but still managed to be attentive and maintained the upkeep of the establishment. This place gets a great rating due to the unique concept. I heard about Wild Detectives, so we set off to check it out. It is in a former house that has been cleverly remodeled. The space is not huge, but they have thoughtfully made room for patrons to post up and chill. There is also an adorable patio which provides additional seating when the weather is nice. I love that WD sells new books. This is an industry that needs to be revived. I saw several classics including "Of Mice and Men" and "The Grapes of Wrath". They have local brews on tap, as well as coffee and hot tea. I tried the hot tea. The mugs are a little small, but whatevs. This would be a great date spot or place to study. I've been hearing about Wild Detectives for a while. I love books and coffee and beer, so it seemed like a place for me! When I was visiting my hometown last weekend, I decided to finally check it out. And it's great. Tiny selection of books, but each is clearly carefully selected. You won't find Nora Roberts here, just literary gems. And the coffee was great. They have a little bit of seating inside, but there's definitely more seating outside (picnic tables in the back). That words, except when it's f-ing hot, which it is in Dallas just about six months of the year. Why not five stars? It's small - definitely tight as you're looking at books. And did I mention I don't sit outside in the summer? And parking is rough (welcome to the Bishop Arts District). Still, what a cool spot. If The Wild Detectives were a person, I'd call him the jack of all trades. They have books, records, wine, beer, coffee, cheeseboards, sandwiches, and free wifi to top it off. The wide range of literature offered is quite extensive and makes you want to become a reader. Their little record collection is very interesting and indie. The beer/wine menu is extensive and they have happy hour. I had a prosciutto sandwich and an iced latte that totaled $15. The sandwich was not good and the coffee was very milky. I wouldn't order a sandwich here again but I would consider a cheeseboard next time and maybe a hot coffee. The interior is decked out in wood, well lit shelving units, and plenty of space for patrons to plug in their laptops. There is even outdoor seating with outlets. I love this place! They had me at the cool name (The Wild Detectives?! Fascinating!). Then they drew me in with the cool set-up (house turned coffee shop/independent bookstore with outdoor patio). Very cool book store in the Bishop Arts area. But, wait, there's more. It's not just a book store. It's a cafe, beer garden, and eatery too. I love the decor. The space was once a house and it seems like they salvaged everything possible from the house and re-purposed it. I was also happy to see a good selection of books written in Spanish. I am only giving three stars based on the service we received. I kind of felt like the guys behind the bar could care less whether we were there or not. And when my latte was ready, the barrista set it on the bar, but didn't let me know that it was there for me to pick up (I was sitting at a table about 5 feet away). Maybe it was an off night. WD was a perfect end to a perfect afternoon exploring Bishop Arts with all its neat-o shops. I mean, it's a bookstore, coffee shop and bar in all in one. What's not to love? Apparently you can eat Emporium Pies here, too. Basically life is complete here. The atmosphere is great. Lots of people studying, drinking beverages and chatting. There's a huge patio in the back, too. I like the comfy seating by the windows. Perfect for curling up and reading while enjoying a hot drink. I got the Hot Toddy ($8) and people watched while reading The Glass Castle. They also do pour overs and have a pretty good selection of wines. I saw some people try the sandwiches and cheese plate.
