This place is a find in the Bishop Arts district - about a block off of Bishop Ave on 8th St in a small repurposed house. It's a bar/cafe/bookstore with a great vibe. The music is dance music/reggaeton but not played so loud that you can't have a conversation. The two ladies running this place are super-efficient. And the drinks are excellent - especially the Texas Sun with the grapefruit, lime and brandied cherry syrup that are added to the margarita base. The Carajillo - vanilla liquor and espresso over ice - is perfect on a hot day if you feel like a shot of caffeine w your drink. And the prices are really good - probably at least $2-3 cheaper than in other Bishop Arts bars. If you go during Happy Hour (3-6 M-F) you get a free drink when you buy a book! One of my favorite spots in Dallas! If youre an Aggie or from College Station and are obsessed with Sweet Eugenes and miss it, look no further! This place reminds me so much of it. Cozy, eclectic, good staff, great drinks, good food. It's not as big but gives me the same vibes! I love to go here to hang with friends, dates, or the little concerts/events they put on. How fun is this!?! 1/2 bookstore (yes legit bookstore) 1/2 cafe (latte it up betch) and 1/2 bar (i know thats 3 1/2s but roll with it Karen). The vibe is chill, we were there midday on a weekday, people were there with their laptops, drinking and making business/studying and here my friends and i roll up looking for drinks. There is also a size-able backyard with lots of picnic tables and seems to be dog friendly. The bartender/barista was very sweet, she was young and friendly, had a great knowledge of their drink menu and made suggestions easily. I tried their house specialty which is named after a book/author i was unfamiliar with. It was stated like I should know so i just smiled and kept the conversation moving along. The coolest coffeeshop ever! What better place to be, surrounded by books, sipping a hot drink, and working on a big table space. The ambiance, totally homey, is perfect for creatives looking for inspiration. I love that they had storytime happening in the front of the shop. It sounded like so much fun for kiddos and parents alike. I got the white tea, and there bag was HUGE. It had a good clean flavor and came piping hot. The only thing is that there wasn't much munchies there, makes sense, it's a bookstore and there is plenty walking distance to eat, but I would have stayed a little bit longer if there was. Definitely a more eclectic and local selection of books. Book lover here, so I'll be back again when I'm looking to pick up another book. read more

WD, bookstore-bar-venue is the result of two Spanish civil engineers, Javier García del Moral and Paco Vique. They wished for a space that could mix two of their passions: books and booze. After talking over the years, they decided to open The Wild Detectives in 2014. I was invited to this bookstore and boy was I impressed! This bookstore is quintessentially barnes and noble's pop! Homy vibes, booze, coffee, food and more... it's a place I plan to become very familiar with! ;) I ordered a dirty chai well... actually I ordered 2, and considered a strong possible third! Flavor is very robust, smooth and aromatic to both the palette and nostrils lol. I just could stop myself. Not to mention, it's easy to get carried away while you're chatting, looking at decorations, books, what someone else ordered and then asking them about what they ordered and it becomes full circle. Which leads me to the vibe... you can see that the culture is approachable for everyone. It's a very cool, sexy and appealing space to dive in, literally! Loved the concept of the wild detectives. Definitely a sip your coffee/drink, relax and read your book spot. Seemed like a great place for first dates! It is exactly what it says it is. A bookstore and bar. There is seating both inside and outside on the patio. The books are on shelves and the bar is located in the back corner area. We stopped here when visiting from San Antonio. It was just a little too chill for us but nothing wrong with that. We wanted to get drinks but noticed everyone was sipping coffee and talking intimately. It coulda been the night we went as well. It was both raining and cold out. WiFi wasn't available after a certain time which was pretty weird being it's a coffee spot/book store. People also had their laptops set up. Overall really did love the idea of it. It's not your common bar. Would definitely visit again when in a Dallas. read more

I like this little spot if you're looking to change up your usual Starbucks routine to do some work or study. They're open until midnight which helps, but I've been informed only on weekdays do they offer WiFi. The ambiance is like a rustic bookstore, and it's very comfy cozy. I will say I felt a little uncomfortable walking in here my first time because I didn't quite understand where to order or where it was ok to sit. Luckily, once you do find a spot and get situated you feel much more at home. For a Tuesday night this place was actually pretty busy, and it was difficult to find a place to sit as it's first come first serve. I'd say ordering wise, it's pretty basic with a few different options - but I kept it simple and chamomile tea which was served in a ceramic coffee cup with a matching plate to hold it. Probably my favorite coffee shop, not just in D/FW, but anywhere. Many other coffee shops have a cool decor and vibe along with quality coffee and espresso drinks. But few also have such an excellent curated selection of adult beverages, literature, music, art, and events. The employees are cool, interesting, and, most importantly, friendly people. No too-cool-for-school hipster baristas/bartenders here. The people here are hip AND genuine. The Wild Detectives is not your typical coffee shop. It opens pretty late but it also stays open late. That is because it is more focused on the many other aspects of what it offers. Perhaps my favorite offering of the place is its events. It hosts an eclectic array of community and cultural events most days of the week both inside and out on its patio. The customers are equally eclectic and consist of everyone from college students to hipsters to academics to your run-of-the-mill Jane and Joe. It is not uncommon to find international residents and visitors here. Anyway, I could go on about The Wild Detectives but I recommend just paying the place a visit. Great little hidden spot of the main drag. Coffee shop/bar/book store/ music venue. This place os situated in a little old Craftman house a block off the main drag in the Bishop Arts area. There are a few stools at the bar, a few small cafe tables, some spots in the backyard. The atmosphere is cozy and charming. I love the drink options. There menu has everything from an Irish coffee to an Aperol Spritz. Something will fit your moods. I'm sure this place is great if you feel comfortable in this sort of vibe, however, it was very uncomfortable and me and my friend left immediately. Came in one afternoon to study and everyone was a middle-aged white man drinking a beer, which, ok, but we quite literally had to maneuver through a crowd of them sitting on the porch blocking the door. Upon getting inside there were only spots at the bar left and the AC was horrible. We stood around for a few seconds before both feeling the atmosphere was very unwelcoming and left. read more

On this rainy night, a friend and I allowed hours to simply flow on by with glasses of cava, a cheese board, a couple of alfajores, reading poetry, and skimming through beautiful sentences on pages! Cherishing future visits here with discovering local writers, fabulous novels, and, enlightening lectures. Sublime and captivating it is to be accompanied by a friend or two. Would leave no stars if I could. Bartenders rude from the start of when we came in. Made fun of my friend for asking about the drink selection. When we tabbed out after our drinks they made fun of our Hispanic last names. Left no tip and yelled DONT COME BACK as we were walking out. We were nonconfrontational the entire night and didn't tell them anything about their rude behavior and were still treated this way. Racist rude and unprofessional. The 2 bartender girls working 6/25 evening should be held accountable. We gave 0 reason for them to act like this. All we did was order our simple drinks, sat down at the patio, and tabbed out. I wanted to like it but found it lacking and trying to be too many things- bookstore? Bar? Coffee shop? But not really excelling at any. The single check out is also a nightmare on a busy day. I also respect the right of any business to express a viewpoint though I found the "Free Palestine" sticker in their window uninformed and offensive. Again, I'm sure many business owners choose to express their political opinions but, as a customer, I prefer to keep that stuff out of my business transactions. If you want coffee, I love Davis Street. For books, I'll stick with Interabang. read more

A friend recommended this place - all they told me was that it was a "cool place." And they weren't wrong!!! It's a bookstore/coffeeshop/bar in one. It's such a cute, quaint atmosphere. And there's an outdoor patio area! What more could you ask for in the middle of Bishop Arts District! We sat outside and got some coffee - I got the cafe au lait, and it was superb. Just the right amount of milk. I don't generally drink coffee, but this one was delightful. They also allow outside food, as they only offer empanadas. All the cocktails are over $10 and that's where they lose me. They had a nice outdoor space, but all the picnic tables looked like they'd seen some stuff. I have been coming here ever since one of my friends introduced this lovely gem of Bishop Arts to me. I have not only studied here and enjoyed a cocktail with that, but I truly love the ambiance. I love it so much that I have brought individuals here from out of town to know about this awesome place. The Wild Detectives is not just a place to get work done, but there are books to read with cocktails and caffeinated beverages to order. Also, to facilitate face to face communication, the WiFi is turned off on weekends. I mean let us all admit we spend a lot with our lovely smart devices in this time and age. It truly helps to meet new people in this case. ;) I recently came here (1/4/2020) and as expected quite a crowd even after 10 PM. My friend and I sat on the bar. I saw that they had Irish Coffee and after craving it since being back from vacationing in Ireland, I had to have it. Although, it was tasty, but nothing compares to how it tasted in Ireland. One of my new favorite finds is this fun little bookstore/coffee shop/bar. Came here with a friend for the first time over the holidays and loved the various seating options available for whatever type of hangout/work you plan to do. I loved the literary inspired drink menu and apparently it rotates with new concoctions seasonally. The bartender was warm and welcoming and gave great recommendations while we were deciding what to order. We opted to just get lattes and they have an are off to the side for you to sweeten the coffee how you like. Flavored syrup options would've been nice though. This won't be my last visit to this favored shop and looking forward to trying the new cocktail menu. read more
