If I could give this place 0 stars I would. My friends and I were treated horribly. After an hour of waiting for our food, my friends politely asked for a status. The bartender behind the bar went from 0 to 100 in anger raging and yelling at us, even flipping us off. We walked out because we seriously felt that he was going to resort to violence and throw a glass or something at us. We did NOTHING to aggregate him but simply ask in the nicest way possible because believe it or not this is not the first time we've delt with this. A warm and friendly little gathering spot in SoMa. I stopped in for an evening of booze, burgers and brains (trivia) with some co-workers and was overall very impressed. What excited me the most was two-fold. First, the separate bar specializing in craft beers featured a fantastic selection, making for some satisfactory head nods with every new brew I ordered. Second, I love their menu, which had me salivating before ever trying the food. I settled on a DIY burger which comes with lettuce, vine ripe tomato, pickles and mayo. I added some cheddar and caramelized onions. For some reason I thought this would be just another bar where the menu was too clever and health-oriented for its own good, but the burger, like everything else, was clearly designed for someone who loves flavor over concerns about getting fat. The only downside was the service. We sat at our table for what must have been 30 minutes before figuring out ourselves that our orders must be placed at the bar. The waiter pretty much ignored us except when bringing out food, and even then he had no idea who ordered what. I ordered my burger with the salt and pepper fries but got regular ones, though they were still damn tasty. Tip: Be sure to stop in for trivia Wednesday nights after 7 pm. My group came to this bar on a Friday night around 10pm. The bartender was a woman with wavy dark brown hair. She was kind to my husband who initially ordered drinks, who is white. The rest of our group was Asian. As soon as one of the Asians in our group approached the bar, she was immediately hostile. She became rude and extremely condescending. We felt completely unwelcome in this bar due to the bartender. I will add that the rest of the wait staff was courteous to us. Absolutely loved this place! It's a bit of a hipster/dive-bar, but they have the best burgers in town. We went for a Metallica Club get-together the weekend of their 40th anniversary shows last month and had an absolute blast here. I visited The Willows on a night out with the guys for our monthly dinner and had high hopes for the food and drinks here based upon what I had been reading on Yelp. Unfortunately The Willows was a disappointment on pretty much all fronts, and it wasn't until I checked my credit card statement that I realized how shady the bartenders here can be. I bought a round of drinks for myself and the guys and instead of being charged for 3 drinks, I was charged for 5. I complained and they fixed the problem, but ended up increasing their tip (one they didn't deserve in the first place) by 50%. At $12/drink, these were the least special cocktails I've ever had and I will definitely not be back. The bartender I dealt will was a total jerk and I would be wary of using your credit card here. Check your statement and make sure you weren't overcharged! The food is very much overrated and there's not a whole lot to say about their bacon donuts, burgers, or any other menu item except that it's way overpriced and overrated. I like Willows. Been here twice when I came to SF to watch bands. Dive bar with big windows to people watch. They do have TVs and a pool table. Friendly vibe even though the bartender seemed a little exhausted, understandable. Got me a PBR and some sliders. Pretty dang good sliders. Music was a hit for me. It's called "the willows" but it should be called "the aioli" since that's pretty much what's going on here. Came here with a friend and we had: - Pork belly donuts (which are just battered and fried bacon chunks served in syrup) which, to be fair, didn't have aioli. - The fries with a "threesome of aioli" or something - two of which were awesome and one of which was too mayoey. This dish was probably my fav. - The sliders, which were all good and had aioli on them. - Mac and cheese balls, which were a little bland (full disclosure: I make the best mac n cheese everrr, with truffle oil and sriracha) served with a big thing of, you guessed it, aioli! These people do things with pork belly - lots of things. They tell you to share the doughnut. Yes, there is a pork belly doughnut. If I were a single dude, I would get a couple of orders and walk around asking people if they wanted to try some. It is certainly a conversation starter and tasty - fortunately. I'm more of a tea-toatler but I noticed both bottomless mimosas and bloody marys. I usually have only noticed the former. There is a do-it-yourself bloody mary bar! It seems to delight adults. What is delightful for kids of all ages is that, in addition to 2 pool tables, there are boardgames. There are dozens of them. The seating is such that you could enjoy a game during your meal. We just happened to pop into this place by chance and I'm glad we did. Yes it seems like a dive bar as you walk in, and rightfully so as it's dark and grungy aesthetics are apparent. However, the bartenders here take the time to make the cocktails as they should be. The Manhattan and Old Fashions were on point and made like a high end up scale lounge, and the beer & bourbon selections are top notch at no additional cost, outstanding. The food was great and surprisingly delicious. We had the Carne Asada Fries, the sliders, the buffalo wings, and a basket of regular fries and everything was done very well and tasty. I come to the Willows on the reg, due to living right next to it. The food here is actually really good, compared to typical bar food. It seems like the kitchen actually put some thought into the menu. I particularly love the vegan sloppy joe's - which do not taste overly vegan. The fish burger is good too - they actually take the time to grill the fish properly. The vibe is divey but living-room-esque. There is also ample seating so you're not forced to stand around hovering. My one complaint is that the bartender on the side with the pool table is sometimes in a pissy mood and takes it out on the customers - my friends and I go here pretty often and one night some of us took like a second too long to decide if/how many shots were needed and that pissed him off apparently? Other than that, the rest of the crew is pretty solid. Protip: kitchen is only open until 11pm, so if you're stumbling home late and looking for food, just remember to get there before 11! read more

I had the fried chicken sandwich once before, the flavors were good, was a decent sandwich on a fresh soft bun. I had delivery of the same today with an order of Assad fries. The only thing edible are the actual French fries. The meat quality here is terrible! The chicken was tough, dry and truly inedible I thought maybe I got a bad bite but I went around the entire thing and finally pulled it out of the bun and felt it, this is hard as a rock. Giving only 2 stars for the experience I had seems uncharitable but I cannot help but admit I've had better service. I'll round up to 3 stars because the patty melt was terrific. I stopped in on a weekday afternoon well after lunch, so the 30-minute wait for my melt cannot be blamed on a rush. Besides, there were at most 10 other people in the bar and not everyone was eating. I kept nursing my beer so that I'd have some left when the food came, thinking that perhaps I'd order another beer when I was about half-way through. A patty melt isn't very complex and there's no way it can take half an hour unless the cook has forgotten the order. A guy that came in and ordered fifteen minutes after I did was served his food at the same time. I decided to skip the second beer and ate rather more hastily than was good for me simply because I was appalled at getting forgotten like that without at least a conciliatory word. So, the beans were absolutely SPECTACULAR! Bar food is just about all I live for so unlike most of their typical crowd I was there to enjoy the menu with a beer. The Willows staff was impeccable, polite and well engaged with new customers as well as what seemed to be their regulars. My boyfriend and I made a pit stop in SF on our way home from a vacation in Portland. We had never spent any real time in California and figured we could fit San Fran in and after this experience we are very glad we did. The kitchen staff even made their way out on the floor which I always love, everyone was polite and having a great time. Cold beer and quality food, I couldn't have asked for anything more! The only real bummer is that the women's restroom only has one toilet so the line can accumulate pretty quickly. It has two separate rooms, one with fairly intimate seating and a beer bar, the other with more family style seating, games, a pool table, and a full bar. They have a pretty good selection of beers, and while I didn't eat there, my friend really enjoyed his chicken sandwich. Parking in this area is awful at best, especially at busy times. Also I'm not sure how safe parking would be in this area, so your best bet is to walk or Uber. We went on a Saturday evening, and at eight they had a DJ spinning some very cool tunes at a sound level where we could still enjoy conversation with each other. I would definitely go back for a drink before a show at either Slim's or the DNA lounge. read more

Buuuutttt our bartender (black guy) was very vocal about how much money he wasn't making and how he's so tired from his other three jobs. Right when we sat down I cheerfully asked him how he was doing and he immediately said "Not great." And walked away. He also spoke rudely and loudly about the customers before us. Look dude. I also had a shitty day at work and I'm here to get happy. Our food was great (although if you are going to charge $1 for a sauce, at least fill the plastic ramekin up, not a third of the way), but if this was my bar, I would not want my patrons who just blew $50 on 2 burgers and 2 drinks to hear my employees complain. GROSS EGGS!! Went here with some friends to grab brunch and partake in bottomless mimosas. When we arrived a little before noon on a Saturday, the place was pretty much empty, save for a few tables. For my meal, I decided to go with the Shakshuka--a dish that I have grown to love over the last year. Several others ordered it as well because it sounded so good. Needless to say, all of ours came out around the same time and we all sort of stared at the plate with a little bit of horror. The eggs looked as if they had once been plastic and were just heated up and put on the skillet. I don't know how you make eggs look that inedible, but they did. I was so hungry I just cut it up and mixed it around and made due, but my other friends opted to have it remade. When they brought them back out, they looked pretty much the same, so my friends stomached as much of it as they could. The woman who was waiting on us was decently friendly and apologized saying that they had relatively new kitchen staff, but the food was just so appalling--especially for something as simple as over easy eggs. I don't know what this place is like for everything other than brunch, but do yourself a favor and steer clear of the eggs here, especially from the Shakshuka. read more
