We came here at 11pm on a Saturday and had to take a few minutes to find an open seat. The place has kind of a European train station vibe to it, with a lot of brass and glass. Intimate, but still airy and fun. It felt like the music was just some songs one person decided to play, but I liked their taste. The bartenders also really make the drinks with a flair. They all had great hair too. We ordered 2 drinks at the bar, a let them talk and a farm to glass. The farm to glass, their rotating special, was a blackberry and spice (cardamom?) cocktail. We had a nice time overall. Just came in before a Sunday evening show for a couple of drinks and a dessert. Interesting interaction with our server, who commented, "Your first time here?" I said it was... and asked if it was that obvious. And she told me it was. I have no idea what this means. But, maybe I'm just not cool enough to hang out in this establishment. Came on a Thursday night and the place was decently filled (bar, small rooftop patio area, and some tables were taken). The island tables were open and the online menus were QR codes on the touch lamps. Super dim setting and great for dates because of the really nice interior! Staff were really attentive and took our order. Ordered Northcoast Stout, cocktail, and garlic fries with aoili. The stout was very viscous, heavy and dark. Cocktail was light but pretty pricy for how much they give you. Garlic Fries were absolutely amazing! My first experience here was actually work-related, so I didn't get to see The Wolves in its natural habitat so to speak. From the decor and their website, I have enough of an idea that I wouldn't mind returning on my own. The curved beautiful ceiling made me think I was inside a kaleidoscope, yet the dark wood throughout brought one back to earth. Up front by the door, there is a spiral staircase that takes you to a narrow space with some additional tables; I imagine a DJ could fit up here as well. Towards the back, there is another upstairs area as well, and I'm not sure if this is utilized due to the lack of space at this time, but from photos prior to 2020, it looks like a great spot for a small band to perform. The bathrooms were interesting with the angel above the sink with a chain around its waist, and there were a couple animal heads (or maybe just the one coming from the bathroom area.) Although this probably isn't public access, this bar connects to the Alexandria Ballrooms next door, which is another beautiful space; you feel transported in time here between the two areas. Although I dread coming to the downtown area, I would certainly visit The Wolves if the opportunity came up. read more

Went for Friday night. It wasn't too packed when I walked in at 6 but by the time I walked out it was packed. The drinks were very tasty! I got th scolds based drink and the rum based drink. The vodka one was a bit sour but very refreshing. The rum one was a bit too sweet. Service is slow and they tend to forget about you. The decoration/building was pretty cool although it was a little too dark to get a good look. There's a stairwell to get to a small second floor space with balcony/bar seating. After waiting so long to get to this place, everything about it--besides the beautiful interior--was such a disappointment. The main server when my friend and I got there, Ashley, was incredibly rude. We sat down at one of the tables and she came within 3 minutes to tell us to move because the table was "typically reserved". Ooookay....didn't see a plaque or anything, but we did move for her. Now that we were at another table, my friend was able to order a drink and I got some bread and water. It took a good 15 minutes for both to arrive, and by the time that it did I tried ordering a drink myself. It seemed like our waitress was more interested in collecting the menu than in getting my order, because I had to stop her from leaving in order to finish. It took another 15 to get my drink at this point and we still hadn't received the water I had previously ordered. Again, it seemed Ashley was avoiding us--my friend was watching as she attended all the other tables but deliberately avoided us. At one point, she was standing at the podium in the back and staring out into the main hall and my friend and her were literally making eye contact, but she didn't move. We finally got our water when another server came to ask us, for the first time mind you, if everything was going well. My friend and I were so frustrated at this point that once we'd finished our $18 cocktails, we asked for the bill. We were so disappointed and agreed that had our server been even a little bit more agreeable, we wouldn't have rushed out, but as it was we didn't feel comfortable spending any more time or money there. read more

The Spring Street block is a multi-verse in itself. The skin-deep cocktail is creative and delicious (although the salmon skin was a little unnecessary). Only leaving this review because our server was amazing. Without him - I would've probably given 1 star.. I only remember his name starting with a K - Kody?! Sorry dude, I hope it's Kody. First - this place can get pretty busy and doesn't take reservations. We were a party of 7 so it was tricky to get a table. There's only 2 tables that can actually seat that many. So we waited and when we got a table (maybe 20 minutes in) After grabbing a table - we waited maybe 15 minutes for someone to take our order. When we asked one of the girls that walked by if we needed to order @ the bar, she was super sassy and rude. It was a pretty simple question - not sure why she needed the attitude. After our interaction with her, we wanted to leave and go home. She just felt very "mean girl" and we didn't feel welcomed by her. Anyway, Kody ended up being our server and was very attentive, very informative with the menu, very polite, and he made sure to check on us every time he walked by. We were celebrating a bride and he was very congratulatory and cheerful when chatting with us. He alone made the experience worthwhile for our group. The drinks are a bit wild - I'm a simple margarita girl, but if you like funky and detailed drinks - this is the bar for you. Drinks were also very strong. What a charming spot. Based on how it looks, you wouldn't be faulted for thinking that inside it might feel a little pretentious but it was actually quite a comfortable and easygoing atmosphere. We came on New Years Eve and after paying a $20 cover charge (I don't know if it was NYE specific or if they usually have a cover charge), we found our way in. It's a pretty nice size and surprisingly did not feel crowded. In fact we were able to find some seats pretty easily. The bar was also not crowded either. The bartenders weren't too talkative but that was fine for me . They made the drinks pretty strong but they didn't taste like it, nice and smooth. I think they change their specials menu every so often but I like that everything is kept to the 1920s theme. For New Year's Eve they even had flappers. Another bar I visited a couple weeks before everything closed down. I was intrigued by the design but stayed for the interesting combination of ingredients of their cocktails, many of which incorporate plants like sage, lavender, and fruits including fig and yuzu. There were also at least two drinks that contained coffee. I ordered a coffee lavender, and I'm not sure why because I'm not a fan of the taste of coffee and I really disliked the only espresso cocktail I've tried. My friend ordered some drink that had banana in it, and I think they torched the top to make it like bananas foster? I can't find it on their menu now so some cocktails must be rotated out. My friend and I are both extra so out of a nearly-empty bar, we chose to climb the spiral staircase to drink our single drinks at a tiny table at the far end of the loft area. The interior of the bar is definitely cool and although I can imagine it's a hip place to be when it's full, it was nice to experience it on a quiet night. It made me forget I was in LA, which is sometimes all you're looking for when decompressing. The coffee lavender drink was okay. Probably would have tasted better to me if I liked coffee but I wanted to try it mostly because of the lavender. The coffee doesn't totally overpower the lavender though, which was good and all I really hoped for. My friend said he *really* liked his drink and mentioned wanting to buy a torch to make drinks like that at home. Tried the burger, 1920s cocktail, and an old fashioned (just a regular one - not the specialty one with truffle). Burger was AMAZING. So much flavor especially with the caramelized onions. It is a little pricey but is $2 off during happy hour. Cocktail-wise, the regular old fashioned was good but nothing made it particularly better than any other old fashioned. I came here on a Saturday night with a cousin. It was the 4th time I've been here and this bar by far is among my favorites in DTLA. Situated a the southern corner of the famed Alexandria Hotel next to the intersection of Spring St and 5th St, the Wolves lies in the middle of the Historic Core district filled with historic buildings from the late 19th to early 20th century. It is walking distant from multiple points of interest such as the Last Bookstore, Spring Arcade Building, the Broadway movie palaces, and the Grand Central market so there is no short of things to do here. There are many open lots and parking structures in the area but pay close attention to the sign as many have surprisingly high surcharge at a certain time or after certain amount of hours. The area is also dimly lit at night but rest assure that it is safe to walk as long as you watch your step on uneven surfaces. There's no sign lighting the bar's name but you won't miss it with the wood cladding exterior evoking a Parisian cafe from the Belle Epoque era and the bar's name painted on the window in gold. Prior to the pandemic, I had to wait outside for an open seat but during this visit, the bouncer let us in and wait inside the bar. The interior looks as old as the building housing it will travel you back through time had you not distracted by the more contemporary dressed patrons. Every part of the bar is covered in carved wood, wrought iron balcony, polish copper wall panels and the stained glass ceiling that brightly but warmly lit the room. We had about 15 minutes walking inside and up to the interior and street facing balcony areas before we were seated by our bartender Jason. Our original intention was to have our dinner here but since we got seated just after 11pm, cocktails is the only option we have left. Jason was very busy serving other patrons so it took him a few minutes before he took our orders. He was friendly throughout and kept us and other people entertained through conversation ranging from mixology through other topics. Although his way of mixing drinks wasn't a full stage performance, it looked effortless but filled with grace and professionalism. Overall I was very pleased with having him served us. As for the drink, I only ordered one Agua Buena ($18) while my cousin had a Harbinger of Fun ($18,) which are both under the Specialty Cocktails section. I took a sip of the Harbinger of Fun, which is a light pink colored drink that has a light yet refreshing taste fitting for quenching thirst in the summer heat. The Agua Buena, on the contrary, was filled with strong flavors resembling a blend between a shrimp cocktail and a bowl of ceviche. The strong aroma of shrimp, garlic, and onion gave this drink a surprise kick under the unsuspecting lime green color one would see from a margarita. In other words, it is essentially an appetizer in a cocktail form and just the smell of it made me forget that I was supposed to have dinner here. The cucumber garnish served well as a cleanser and bring your palette back. Although this drink was not as strong as a martini, with a wide range of complex flavors this drink was designed to be consumed slowly through small sips. Overall, the Wolves is a complete package of a setting that bring back a sense of a romantic bygone era while being avant-garde in successfully bringing new drinks to a well established bar scene in DTLA. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone wether you're a drink connoisseur, someone looking for a date spot, or just want to have a memorable time with friends and colleagues. I wish this bar well on its future endeavors. read more

Came here last night to celebrate my friend's birthday. I've been here a few times and always had a great experience - great atmosphere, drinks, and staff. However, as I was handing the bouncer my ID, an intoxicated patron exited and immediately started berating me telling me "to be nice to the bouncer" or she was first going to punch me in the face, which quickly escalated to her saying she had a knife and was going to stab me. I had said zero words to either the bouncer or this woman, even after her threats, so this was completely random and uncalled for. The bouncer sat there and just chuckled, with no intervention. Needless to say, this left my friends and I a bit shaken up. Why have a bouncer if he's just sits in his chair and doesn't intervene in situations like this? So far so good, their menu has changed from what they used to have. The current of the Charleston is espresso based served with an coffee based whipped cream. I used a straw for the application as the beard would have gotten in the way. It felt more like a chocolate shake than a drink but you can still taste the liquor in a good way. The chocolate nip bourbon was an added plus and the drink itself was rather enjoyable. Having had to swirl the whip cream into the drink and then sip it into the straw to truly find all its flavors was also enjoyable. The places to improve, the eldest server greats people with an air of contemptuous energy and perhaps should look for an alternative place to enjoy themselves. I've also noticed that the bar backs not wearing gloves but there is a guy wearing a #63 who is doing their job with skill and kindness. Overall, this place is a 4/5 but there are places where it excels. The location is excellent, the vibe is just about right, if the head waiter loses the attitude and everyone practices hygiene at a professional level, this place would be just about perfect. read more

Ah the Wolves. I finally was able to stop by after Puzzle Bar sadly closed in the OC a few years ago. (Could we pretty please bring an off-shoot of the Wolves to the OC?) I know I technically shouldn't compare the two (I loved Puzzle Bar's menu of whiskey drinks to anime/movie titles), but the Wolves is an elegant, fancy and gorgeous bar that is able to stand toe-to-toe against the nightlife scene around DTLA. When you come into the Wolves, you're greeted by so much old-school pizzazz. The architecture and seating structure are terrific. The bar is large and wide with several rows of liquor sitting amongst each row. You can wait for the staff to take you to a table or sit at the bar. We were able to see the narrow staircase near the entrance and inquired if we could go up. And up we went (not as many steps as you may think) to a gorgeous viewing area of the entire bar area (not huge so if you're a pair, you should be cool). Drink-wise, they pack a punch and are normally priced. We got the yuzu cocktail and blood orange ginger cocktail. They were both delicious and after a night of drinking before we got here, they were the only ones we had. The only note I have here is that I wish there were more options for drinks (That or we may have missed another menu?) We also were not checked on often being upstairs so do be mindful that you may have to go down to get your check. Otherwise, during the summer days, I could imagine going out to their patio and looking out on the DTLA streets sipping a cocktail. It's something that isn't that common in DTLA (other than at a place like Perch higher up) and has a nice, Euro feel to it all. Parking-wise, you're in for the usual DTLA battle - limited street parking and paid parking lots. I am too impatient and just go for whatever is nearby as long as it's not too pricey so pick your poison there. read more

Somehow we ended up here, thankfully. When I walked in I had no idea where were going to begin it. I will say I love the dimly lit setting. Something about the early 1900's theme I just really enjoy. I ended up just getting a tigers milk, and I really enjoyed it. It's very refreshing while at the same time delicious. The price isn't bad, it's what you'd expect at a place like this. Unfortunately I was not able to try any of the food but I will next time for sure.
