Dark, dingy, dive bar. I say I don't drink, but I may have a little tipple a couple times a year. I was enticed to come here with a friend offering to buy me a drink. Not willing to pass up a good thing, we hoofed it over here from Madame Tussaud's. Inside, a non-descript lounge is what greeted me. Very dark, I managed to read the menu & notice their drink specials. It's been so long that I forgot what drink I had, but it came out right away. I found it funny & a stroke to my ego when the bartender asked for my ID. It's all that clean living, I tells ya ;p We didn't stay too long, as we were just killing time before an event. Play that funky music white boy... This place is like a wolf in sheep's clothing. From the outside it looks like a dive bar. But inside it looks like a trendy club that's owned by Paul Bundy. Its lesbian chic put to a whole other level. I feel like the next time I come I should wear plaid and workman boots and a puffy vest lined with fur from the deer I shot the other day, but I resist the urge every single time. The place is small, but it was adequate enough for a small group of my friends to huddle around and enjoy some beverages. The bar is hopping but the bartender was still as sweet as the simple syrup she poured. The drinks are cheap, the bouncer was amiable enough, the bartenders know how to crack a smile, and a jukebox. I'd say that is a success in my book. I'll be back in a heartbeat, anytime I'm near the Kodak or just in general. In most cases, when you say 'you're in the weeds', it usually means you're in a shitty place. In this case, when you're in 'the woods' it's a good thing. I meandered into this spot with some friends on a Monday night after some bowling. I had no idea what this place was. I was only familiar mashti malone's next door. It was a nice surprise to see such a chill and cozy place. The front doesn't betray the nice little lounge inside. Granted, we came in on a slow night. I can only imagine how packed it might get on a weekend. What really threw me off was how affordable the drinks were. I ordered a gin and tonic with a beer , and got charged 10$. WTF? I had to double check and order a midori sour and beer. 10$ WTF? I was expecting bougie prices. A nice place with good prices and decent pours? Sign me up. The bartenders were very cool with no attitude. Thumbs up. Had the $30 worth of drinks for $16 Groupon deal. Not a heck of a lot to say about The Woods... it's in a cramped strip mall and although they do have valet, it's a tight mess. I found street parking, but not an easy area to park in. Place is very dark and um... Woodsy? Lots of wood pieces and rustic decorations. Tables shaped like tree trunks (small). But there didn't appear to be table service the Friday night we were there. There was one bartender and everyone had to go to the bar to get drinks. Bartender couldn't make a melon-ball (have the hardest time finding a bartender that can make that drink!) but did make a passable Mai Tai. Friend ordered an old fashioned but decided it was best to stick to beer for the second round. And the food situation -- Oh my this is a first for me! They have menus on the table and if you want to order food, you CALL THE RESTAURANT down the street and order the food yourself. The restaurant will then come and bring your food in plastic and Styrofoam. Classy. So, I've been to the Woods. And I can't think of a single reason to come back. read more

The Woods is a cool place that I've always wanted to check out but never made it to before last nights ill fated night of beer pong and kings cup. At about 1 am we figured to go get some drinks (great idea!) and the Woods was convenient, close, and the best choice. When we got there and were looking in it looked pretty full, but looks can be deceiving. It was just people crowded around one side of the bar, we were able to get seats at the bar and I was able to get a delicious red bull vodka. The bartender was cool, as was security, and all in all the woods seems like a chill place I will have to venture back to more! (A solid 4 stars for playing Joy Division!) read more

Ambiance is cool, showing some updated menu items and happy hour is every night until 10! The "well mixed drink" is something of your choice! Over the hills and through The Woods! Strange that this lounge-bar is in a strip mall with a low key exterior, the interior is pretty trendy and has a total woods theme with antler chandeliers and tree stump tables. Glad they didn't go all the way and have dead animal heads and gun racks mounted on the walls. Cool that one of the first thing you run into upon entering is the huge jukebox perfect for capturing the attention of drunk people as they stare for minutes pondering the perfect song to select. The bathroom is the single room type but it's no trouble fitting two people... as a guy and girl walked out when I was waiting next in line. I went on a first date with a guy and we came here. While I'm still trying to make up my mind about the guy (he's Canadian - awesome!; he's got a limp... not so much), I was positive the second I walked into The Woods that I was in love. It was a Monday night, so it wasn't packed and I can't respond to any of the complaints of a line or paying for valet (even though I'd think either would be worth it). It's dark and woodsy themed and has a juke box that I'd be proud to call my ipod (don't worry - I'm as embarrassed about that line as I should be). The tables look like tree stumps, the light fixtures look like branches, there are star lights on the ceiling. This is what I want my bedroom to look like. For serious. Onto the useful portion of this review: drink prices were standard, parking (during the week) very easy, super casual (in a hipster kinda way). A nice crowd - not super open or friendly, better for going when you know who you want to talk to. read more

From the outside, The woods looks like one of those shady bars in an unassuming strip mall. But it's is the complete opposite once inside. It's not that small, nice woodsy decors (love the tree stump chairs) great looking people and drinks were really amazing. I ordered Marshmellow S'Mores Martini and absolutely fell in love with it. They provide a small healthy menu such as Grilled Chicken, Hummus, Falafel Sliders, just call the number on the menu and it will be delivered right to your table. Great food, alcohol, atmosphere, and patrons makes a successful bar. I will definitely go back. read more

This bar was alright. I've been to better, I've been to way worse. For a drunk night, it's at least worth trying once. Located right next to a liquor store, it's pretty convenient to leave the bar at last call and pick up a 12 pack before the good ol' 2 am cut-off comes along. The bouncers were pretty chill. No complaints in that department. The bartenders - slightly preoccupied. Granted it was pretty busy, but I wish she would have had a little more patience. Accessibility to order was not too difficult which was a plus. Drink prices are kind of expensive. I ordered 3 jäger bombs and it came to $40. Ouch. As far as LA bars go, The Woods is one of my favorite bars. Music is usually a great jukebox, and when the DJs are playing, the music is totally groovy. (Right now I'm hearing a cool mix of the Beatles' Come Together) with an R&B groove. Lights are dimmed nicely, the bartenders friendly and knowledgeable. The crowd's pretty eclectic. It used to be the old dive bar, Lava Lounge, so the dirty Hollywood peeps still come around, mixed with the usual hipsters from the "Eastside". (I still think the Eastside is South Pasadena, Alhambra, Sam Gabriel, but that's an old ass local Angelino talking.) Quite a few Asians (all the different types), black people, Hispanics get in the mix. It's a nice mix and how it should be. This is LA, and we're multicultural. ONE OF THE BEST BARS IN LA. read more

Had a bag stolen from here last week and haven't gotten absolutely zero help from the staff or it's owner in trying to retrieve it. Was told there's a security camera that points directly at the spot the bag was taken from, yet attempts to call and contact the owner have failed with no call backs or assistance from staff. One the night I lost the bag one security guard told me they were "lost and found" and unwilling to help me any further. This is a really interesting place. The inside is a bit dark for my taste but the drinks are good and happy hour from 8-10pm is quite cool. Don't expect service at the booths as there's only the bartender so if you plan on going you have to get your drinks at the bar before sitting in the booths. I had a hard time when I went as I couldn't constantly get up to get my drinks so I just ordered 1 when my girlfriends showed up. I do like that they card you the first time you get your drink to make sure you are legal to drink. Parking is $5.00 so if you want, look for street parking. read more

I came here last week for a birthday party. What a cool place! If I had looked on Yelp ahead of time, I would have tried the s'mores martini. Instead I got a basic mixed drink. The lighting and decorations are warm and modern, there's cool music, and it's a friendly crowd. While you can't tell from the outside, the inside is very spacious. I'm rating Saturday night as 5 stars! I go on Saturday night and it's one of my favorite hangout spots. I'm 30 and it's hard to find a bar with great music, dancing, mix of singles and couples, and awesome crowd. The music is hip hop dance 90s and 2000s hip hop. Acquaintances the bar Tucktaway in a shopping center next to a liquor store a laundromat and an ice cream shop you wouldn't really think it would be a bar this nice there but there you have it the woods The doorman was an interesting character The service at the bar was not so good and the drink I got was made incorrectly. Granted it was a martini but I did ask for a vesper martini at first and I was asked how to make it? Complicated and a little awkward especially considering it was very loud. My review is based on Happy Hour on a Thursday night. Happy Hour Prices are pretty good between $3-$5. Their happy hours last until 10pm, which is rare in this city. There's no specialty menu with fancy names and cocktails, but a simple happy hour menu that states well drink prices, well martinis, beer prices etc. Food: They don't serve any food here, but they have a small menu for the restaurant next door, who brings you the food. I didn't have anything so I'm not sure of the quality, but the prices seemed cheap. Location: It's located in a small strip mall. This are is a very trafficy and busy area. Parking: Can be pretty difficult. If you're lucky you can park on Hawthorne or the streets parallel to La Brea. Otherwise, they offer valet. Decor: Cute. It's a forest themed bar with tree stumps and branches everywhere. Service: Great. Our bartender was attentive and helpful. I didn't love it here, but I didn't hate it. I'd definitely come again, maybe during a busier time. There just wasn't anything to make me CRAVE this place. But at the same time, there's nothing about the place that I dislike. The Woods!!!! Parking is small. If you can find it in that shopping center it's golden and free. Now for the bar itself. Drinks are nice. Not greedy on the liquor and beer is beeeeeer. Prices not bad. I have gone Saturday nights and Dj Prophet kills it. A mixture of everything. Old skool hip hop and classic rock. You must give this man props when you're there. The place is small and can get crowded. The people are mixed and just having fun. I've been to the Woods countless times in my thirties. Probably one of the best weeknight date spots in Hollywood. On the weekend it's still good for a night out or a date. Make sure to get there a little early to get a booth because it can get crowded. The DJ on Saturday kicks ass if you like 90s hip hop! Finding new bars on weekdays is a new 2020 hobby of mine so I decided to search the area around me. I saw The Woods was less than a mile from my apt so I met a friend of mine Putin a Tuesday. Parked right in the parking lot, security was chill and greeted me warmly. Walked in and there a jukebox! One of those high tech ones and the few people in there were playing good songs. Decor is cool, the bar seemed to attract a good looking late 20s, early 30s crowd, and there were multiple bourbon options. These are positives in my book and I'll definitely be back. read more

Let it be known that the tale I am about to recount is 100% true and 100% fact, with like, 2% of embellishment, but I promise to disclose the embellishment parts, cuz that's just the kinda gal I am. Okay, so last night my friends and I stopped by The Woods for a random person's bday party. I didn't know who this dude was, but I hear that bars serve alcohol, so I was game. I had also been curious to see what they did with my old fave bar The Lava Lounge since many an Alabama Slammer had been slammed by yours truly back in the underage day here. When we walked in, it pretty much looked like the same bar to me, with the exception of the frosty tree background above the bar and it was a little less Disneylandy looking, but still a low ceiling'd bar in a strip mall with a crap ass parking sitch. We then made our way towards a table with balloons assuming this was the bday party and grabbed a spot near the bar. As I scanned the room, I have to admit the crowd wasn't really my thing. There were a lot of "Hey, let's dance in a circle and hold our cell phones up to the speakers cuz there's a Proclaimers song playing and we know that our sober friends who are in bed at home will REALLY appreciate this!!" kinda people and then a strange mix of hippie types with dreded ponytails and gold shoes. What? After about 20 minutes of judging the room, I had decided that this place was for the birds and with the exception of my 8 gallon jug of Belvedere and Soda (okay, that's embellishment #1, it wasn't really 8 gallons, but it was damn big!!) I was okay with writing this place off until..... I saw HER. Oh my god. Is that who I think it is? Is that my #3 on the list? Is that? Oh my god it is?!?!? In this stupid bar in a strip mall in Hollywood was one of my Top 5 people I would drop whoever the hell I was with to jump in the sack with. Hey! We all have THAT list and mine is as follows... 1. (Embellishment #2, I don't think I actually said those words since I had seriously lost the ability to form sentences, but that is pretty much what I was trying to say in broken code and panting speak) I then felt my posture suddenly getting a lot better and felt the need to fluff my hair a bit and slide my skirt up just enough to accentuate my long pale leg and candy apple red boot, cuz that's hot, right? I then looked over at her and smiled. Granted I probably looked like a total friggin dork on scholarship at the special ed academy, but it was the best I could do under the flushed and excited pressure. She then smiled back (and that's NOT an embellishment, dammit! I can't prove that in a court of law, but I saw teeth and her lips move, so I will take that as a reciprocated smile!) and started talking to some girl she came with...clearly an attempt to make me jealous (it worked Shane, it worked!). I then turned to talk to my friends who were all laughing at me at this point and when I turned back to send more loving looks her way, she had vanished. What the? Where the? SHaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaane?!!?!? Oh, she's over there now, phew. Okay, so "now what?" I thought to myself. I've always prided myself on not being one of "those" people who go up to celebrities and say, "Can I take a picture with you," but this was turning into an inner battle of epic proportions trying to fight off the urge to just say, "Fuck it!" and go claim my photo opp with my #3! I actually felt my legs gaining the strength to stand up and walk over to her, but then a very strange thing happened that I don't encounter very often. I....pussed out. I know, crazy, right? Here was the hypothetical love of my hypothetical life on my very real list of 5 people I'd bang into tomorrow and I couldn't friggin do it. Pathetic. Thinking about it this morning and watching the L Word on repeat for the 100th time, I think this may very well be one of those "Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda" moments that I will be kicking myself in the ass for for at least a few years, but what the hell are ya gonna do? I pride myself on staying true to my LA Cool Card pledge which clearly states that you cannot, under any circumstances, as a LA native, violate the local rule of "No celeb rushing." The Woods is located in a very unassuming strip mall just off of La Brea and Hollywood, and believe me when I say that this bar much cooler and way more awesome than its divey looking facade. Now don't get me wrong I love me a good dive bar but this place is definitely not a dive. Its more like a man cave for the modern day hipster version of Paul Bunyon or better yet its the kind of place Paul would go to if he was trying to score a classy broad wearing a really cool flannel print shirt and some skinny jean. Once upon a time, there was a yelper named Sal D. He left the Yelp Bowling event and went for a 5 block walk to The Woods. Pretty soon, he began to verbally molest me. He also brought his own flask to the bar and, when he thought no one would care, he helped himself to other peoples drinks. Sitting on the couch in the lounge, he noticed that there were about 4 beers and a cocktail on the wooden stump. Sal D was thirsty. He drank all the liquor from the first bottle. "This beer is gone now he thought. So, he drank the beer in the second bottle. "This beverage is gone now," he thought So, he drank the beer in the other bottle. the next one too. then the cocktail. "Ahhh, all the drinks are empty on the table now," he slurred happily and he began to feel more woosy than before. After he'd drank all the yelpers drinks he decided he was feeling a little tired. So, his friend walked him outside of the bar. ====================================================== Later that night or early morning... Sal D, woke up and felt like utter shit. He screamed, "Help! I need water, Advil, and food". I'm sure he jumped up and ran out of his bedroom or where ever he fell asleep last night. En route to the bathroom to pray to thee ol faithful porcelin god aka Thy Toilet, he tripped and fell on his "really big deek" (his words not mine). Trying his best to pick himself off the floor he grew weaker and weaker, for it is not easy holding a brick between your legs. Sal never made it to the toilet. It was there on the floor where he vomited complete liquor. Not just his liquor but every drink he stole. Serves his ass right for being a hot mess. It was nice meeting you sucker.
