Lots of kids and there was something of an arcade which they were loving! It's somewhat easy to find as it is next to Cane Rosso and adjoins Cow Tipping Creamery. To be honest, I'd never had a Detroit style pizza. It was rectangular, thickish and edge to edge with cheese and ingredients. The staff helped me pick and I also got a salad. Ordered the Budd pizza online for a pick up order. The website was easy to use. The pizza wasn't quite ready when I got there (takes longer than I expected but must be for a Detroit style) but it was DEFINITELY worth the wait. The crust was crispy and had that caramelized cheese hanging over. The sauce was flavorful, next time I will order a little extra because I like it saucy. Was craving Detroit style pizza and was pleasantly surprised at this place which is next door and under the same ownership to Cane Rosso. It's not super easy to get to from downtown Dallas - definitely need a shared ride as I don't think there is public transit and it's about 5 miles away by highway and in an old strip mall. The restaurant is very casual with order at the counter and wait for them to bring it out to your table. They have a small selection of draft beer and some cans to choose from in addition to soda fountain. They also have some ice cream that looked intriguing. The reason to show up is for the Detroit style pizza. Don't be thrown off by the size - definitely go for the large - easily split by 2-3. I visited right at 3:00 one afternoon when I had missed lunch and I got the happy hour special (3:00-6:00). That definitely helps since these are expensive pies. It's $3 off a select few (original, Connie or Honey Bastard). A small is a very filling meal for one person I would say. My honey bastard arrived hot on a rack and boasted a nice crispy crust with just the right crunch to it. These are bready pizzas with a cheesy flavor to the crust. It may be too much bread and cheese for some people but I found it delicious. The only disappointment was that I ordered a pizza without the red sauce which I really wanted to try. However the honey bastard had a good mix of lots of flavors. The hot sopresetta and bacon marmalade satisfied my meat requirements and the cheese had delicious flavor. A few basil leaves gave it a herby touch and the habanero honey had a mild burn and a tasty contrasting sweetness. All in all I'm looking forward to trying another pie soon. read more

I live in DFW, but this is the best import from the Motor City and in this Yelper's opinion, is the BEST pizza of any kind in DFW. My Overall Rating - 5 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Facility, Return) Atmosphere - You'll find Thunderbird Pies in a shopping strip in East Dallas. It shares space with Cow Tipping Creamery. It's mainly a To Go/Take Out stand as there is no wait service, but there are plenty of tables you can sit at. In front you'll find some video games for the kids, and plenty of fun and inspired art on the wall. Not fancy - very family friendly and accessible. 1 Star. Service - I came for the soft opening, but the staff couldn't have been nicer. It's fast casual, so you order in the front, grab a number, and take a seat. Fountain drinks and plates are self-serve. The staff was great - they brought out the food, came to check on us, and the main pizza chef even came out to make sure everything was up to their standards. It easily exceeded it. 1 Star. Food - Detroit Style pizza is the only pizza where I eat the entire slice from edge to edge. Each magical pie begins on a buttery soft on the inside, crunchy on the outside, cheese baked on the edge layer that makes the pizza unique, delicious, the worthy of its own class. My favorite is a tossup between the honey bastard (hot soppraseta, bacon marmalade, and habanero honey) and the original Budd - with the caramelized cheese and tomato sauce. The sauce is poured on at the end - it's unlike any pizza you've eaten. But Thunderbird Pies is not a one trick pony, their apps are as good as the pizza, as an order of artichokes was tasty and a perfect pairing to the pizza. Bonus - because I eat the entire slice there's always going to be pizza to go, and it takes just as good when reheated. 2 Stars. Will I Return? - Yes. Thunderbird Pies began as a ghost kitchen in Zoli's Addison. Back then it was only offered M - Thur. But this pie is so good it deserves to be served 7 days a week. So now that the new East Dallas location is open I will certainly be back. 1 Star. My Yelp Rating Scale (Sum of all parts): 1 Star - Atmosphere - Is it a cool dive? Perhaps an upscale place? No matter the type, atmosphere plays a big part and I'll give a star if I like it or thinks it has great charm. 1 Star - Service - You can have a great meal with bad service. But that's also what can make a five star joint drop to four. It's important to the dining experience that service is great and on point. 2 Stars - Food - I'll award up to two stars for the food, since this is the main reason we dine out. What a great find. Detroit style pizza. Thick square crust, burnt cheese (in a good way!) - what more could deep dish pizza lovers ask for? This is a quaint pizza joint with seating both in and out and some great soft serve ice cream options in the adjacent counter. You order off a menu board and for the most part, everything is self-service. I love the fact that you can split up the types of pizzas in half even with the small so you get to try some of their different combinations. Well worth it. Finally had a chance to check out the brick and mortar of this establishment. While Zoli's was technically closer to my house, Im glad to see Thunderbirds get a dedicated building to themselves. While they said it would take 40 minutes, pizza came out in 17 minutes (it wasn't super busy or crowded on this Friday night). The detroit style pizza is still the main attraction here. The Hawaiian pizza was actually a surprise hit. I felt it had a good balance of meat to fruit and vegetable ratio. It also had a slight floral element that most Hawaiian pizzas don't have. The sausage and pepperoni one is solid, but not the most exciting or best thing they have to offer. Their wings and cheesy bread SUCK! The wings are coated in this gross buffalo wing sauce and the meat itself isnt juicy or tender. The cheesy bread barely had any toppings and felt like old dough being repurposed. After 8 minutes, the bread turns hard as a rock. Stay away from ANY of their appetizers in my opinion. Their B.S. Kale salad is not bad. They are heavily dressed, but they still have texture. The meat and cheese ingredients actually stand out, so it doesn't feel like you are eating straight up kale. read more

My friend recommended this place, and I am glad we went to see what the hype is all about. The location is close to White Rock Lake, and beware of roadway construction causing congestion. The restaurant is located inside a strip shopping center. It looks ordinary on the outside, but the vibe inside is warm and inviting. The music was 70s, 80s, and 90s era, we were jamming on B.I.G Hypnotize, Curtis Blow, and the Sugar Hill Gang. We were promptly greeted by Drew, the on duty manager. The menu was explained along with their Frito Pie creation that was at a special discount price. We ordered the Santorini salad, which was enough for two people, and was quite delicious. We also ordered the Thunder Mifflin pie. I would recommend that you enjoy the pie in the spacious and clean dining room. Our salad was enough to keep us occupied while our pie was being created. Once our pie was delivered, we used the mini pans as plates, and yes... with each crunchy bite, we will never eat another concept of pizza pie from Domino's, Pizza Hut, and Inn again! Lastly, the restroom was neat and clean as well. This, to me, can be a turn-off when the restroom facilities at other restaurants are nastier than the dumpsters behind the restaurants. We had not planned anything for Valentines so on the spur of the moment we thought to go to Thunderbirds, one of my husbands favorites. We got there about sixish and ordered a little before 6:00, we waited for about an hour and then we saw that people that got there after us were being served. I went up to the front and told them we had been there about an hour and people after us were being served; the manager checked and said that one of our pizzas were made wrong and that it was being remade. We checked out Thunderbird Pies yesterday afternoon, and enjoyed our first Detroit style pizza with a big Pinio freezio while watching the Cowboys dismantle the Giants, a sweet and enjoyable experience from every perspective. We ordered a big drip pan pizza, and enjoyed it thoroughly. Compared to other styles of pie (I grew up with Chicago pan pizza), is a bit high on the bread to toppings ratio for my taste, although the outer edge of the crust had a nice crunch factor going. The food and drinks are priced on the aggressive side of market rates for what they are, enough so that we will likely not be coming here a lot in the future, absent a good reason to show someone what the Detroit pie is all about. read more
