However, after dining here both were impeccable. The ambiance of the restaurant was beautiful as well is incredible service and delicious food. For an appetizer I ordered crab cakes. Being from the DMV, I'm used to Maryland crab cakes. The crab cakes offered to me were very flavorful and the crust was great. For an entree I got the 8oz filet with shrimp. Both were cooked to perfection and the shrimp were massive. I don't think I have had a better steak. For dessert I indulged in a molten lava cake with vanilla ice cream. Again, it was amazing. Now the not so great - the food we got was subpar at best. Was told each of the fish dishes were going to have broccolini - turns out it was broccoli that (I am not exaggerating) was microwaved and placed haphazardly on the dish. The parsley "garnish" was five stems thrown on the plate without chopping the actual leaf from the stem. The shutome was a bit salty, but cooked fine - the shutome on the Hawaiian catch was dry. Don't understand the hype behind these dishes - and for $65 and $61 a dish, it wasn't worth it. We had a disappointing experience at Tidepools last night. The food was outstanding and the service was excellent, but they totally ignored our reservation request. I've wanted to eat there for 3 years and I was finally able to do so. My dream was to have my 60th birthday dinner there, and I tried to book so far in advance that they weren't even taking reservations yet. On the very day that they opened reservations for that date, I reserved a table for 2 and requested a quiet, romantic table with a view, explaining it was my 60th birthday celebration. I offered to change the time of the reservation if that would help the restaurant accommodate the request. I received an email acknowledging the reservation and request. Imagine our surprise when we arrived last night and were seated at what looked to be the worst table in the whole restaurant, next to an artificial thatched wall of some sort. It was horrible. I know how lucky I am to get to eat at a restaurant like Tidepools at all. That being said, had I known that they would blatantly disregard my request made 6 months in advance (and likely one of the very first reservations for that date), I would have taken the $250 we spent for the 2 of us and eaten someplace that would have made it feel like the special occasion it was supposed to be. read more

The grounds are truly beautiful. The restaurant is located within the Hyatt so you enter through the lobby and have maybe a 5 minute walk to the restaurant itself. This place reminded me of an old restaurant in Honolulu called Pagoda. Pagoda also had pools with koi fish swimming around next to the restaurant. And the menu at Tidepools reminded me of the menu at Roy's restaurants on Oahu. As we were seated and I looked over the menu, I thought this place was as if Pagoda and Roy's met one night and had a child. That child is called Tidepools. Tidepools thinks the world of herself with that pedigree so her prices are jacked waaaaaaay up. Food overall was good (Roy's). The lobster we had with the Hawaiian Catch dish was ono. Just not of a caliber that justifies the high prices to me. Thankfully they remembered our bread basket at the beginning of the meal. The table next to us was not so lucky. We rarely eat at hotel restaurants because often they just aren't very good. Thankfully, that was not the case with Tidepools. We had a multi-night stay at the Grand Hyatt and decided to give it a try one night. Lovely atmosphere overlooking the water feature at the resort. We tried the roasted vegetable Medallion for a starter and while nicely flavored, it was not quite what we thought it would be. Sadly, I forgot to snap a pic of it. Our entrees were the Grilled Ahi and the Hawaiian Catch. Hubby said his ahi was one of the best he's had anywhere and he's eaten a lot of ahi over the years. The lobster in my Hawaiian catch was a little overdone though tasty. I also would have liked another shrimp or two as those were cooked perfectly. Note that if you want to eat here, make your reservation 4-6 weeks in advance for the best chance of securing a reservation at your desired time. We had a view of the ocean and some giant koi in a pond by a waterfall during dinner. Our experience at the restaurant was pretty good. Service was not too bad and they cooked the prime filet well done instead of rare, but fixed that almost right away. Once they got it right it was delicious. There were some great fish choices on the menu too. There were also a many great wine options, as well as some interesting dessert choices. The crème brûlée was outstanding! This is the best restaurant we had during our winter 2022 trip to Kauai. It was so good that we went there three times during our stay, which is not very typical for tourists. It is just that good. Hawaiian catch is the must-have, and it is so worth it. Most importantly, the price is extremely reasonable. It comes with jumbo shrimp, scallops, ahi fish, and lobster tail. (It is a fresh, big, and delicious one). I LOVE their mashed potatoes (made from purple yam), which is a big bonus. On top of that, even their vegetables are amazingly tasty. Their steak is perfect as well. It is tender, flavorful, fresh, and delicious. I ordered Tai Chi for my cocktail, and it was super good too. Our top choice during our short stay on Kauai. It's expensive and carries a resort premium, but fully delivers on quality and dining experience. Make sure you make a reservation online and in advance. The restaurant sits over a large Koi pond below the resort, with wonderful views of the ocean and surrounding vistas. It's a short hike down without covered walkways, which was a slight inconvenience because it decided to rain just before our reservation. Cold weather aside, it's a lovely location. Our server was friendly enough, he walked us through the popular items and recommended a lilikoi mojito as a NA drink option. He even brought us a takeout box of the complimentary garlic taro rolls upon request - they are SO GOOD. He checked in on us often and the other servers kept our waters full - we never felt neglected. I had an "Old Fashioned Aloha," ($18) which might be the strongest cocktail I've ever been served. I enjoy my whisky so I didn't mind, and the subtle notes of fruit and bitters made for a pleasant experience. We started with the Polenta Crusted Scallops ($25), which consists of three polenta battered scallops over a sweet and smoky harissa sauce, topped with microgreens. These were some of the most fresh and flavorful scallops that we have ever tasted, and stood on their own even without the exotic sauce. The polenta was browned on the outside, which lent a unique texture on top of the heavenly flavors. For entrees, we chose: - Hawaiian Catch ($65): A great choice if you want to try a bunch of things. Soy-ginger shutome (swordfish), accompanied with a lobster tail, a shrimp, and a scallop. Our server let us substitute the sweet potato side with mushroom risotto. Shutome was soft, mild, and fresh tasting. The lobster was so fresh and sweet. The shrimp and scallop were tasty, the former crisp and the latter tender. I'd actually skip the risotto - flavors with mushroom and cheese were on point, but it was a bit too toothy for us. Not quite al dente. - Filet Mignon ($79) - 6oz tender cut served atop garlic mash, with carrots and broccolini. Overall very tasty and flavorful for a filet, enhanced with a wonderful demiglace and compound butter on the side. We were too full by dessert (blame those garlic rolls man), but would have loved to try some of the options. Oh, how the mighty have fallen! We have been visiting Tidepools for years and the honest to goodness truth is they just don't care anymore. Of course, because they're at the resort, they're a shoo in. But absolutely spend your dollars elsewhere! The ambience doesn't matter when the staff ignores you! The staff (and especially our waiter) were more interested in turning over tables than serving the customers. So many major missteps on timing.
