As with any restaurant, I guess I should being with the food. I am a huge fan of the food here, particularly the sopes. That being said, everything here has a ton of flavor, is super fresh, and they give you big portions. If you aren't looking for this place, you'll drive right past it, and when you walk in you might think, oh a small little restaurant, but around there corner from the front door is lots of seating. They have quite a bit of variety on the menu so if you can't find something you like here then you're not even trying. Come hungry, order something delicious, and then fill up on chips and salsa, rice, and tortillas, and then regret it since your entree is huge, but looks great, so you eat it anyway, go home stuffed, and then take a food coma nap. My go to are the shredded chicken tacos. They are heavenly, non-greasy, flavorful, you can't go wrong- crispy or soft. Should you get them with soft tortillas, you get avocado slices. The burritos are solid here too. read more

Hidden Mexican gem right here. I had driven by here a 100 times and thought the place wasnt even open. Saw on Yelp it was open an checked it out last Friday. The entrance is little deceptive. Its the corner spot but the entrance is down from the corner about three doors. The place wraps around inside in an L shape with a ton of seating and easily accommodates large parties. I saw several groups of what I think were nurses on their lunch at two large tables. They must have preordered because their food came as soon as they sat down. The prices here vary. The seafood is on the high end with plates in the $20-28 range. Tacos are $3 each, soft or crispy (dorado). I went with a combo plate of an enchilada and burrito, and chose the pastor. I think it was $10.95 or so? Well worth the price! I didnt expect the enchilada to be pastor too which was a big plus over a simple cheese enchilada. The plate was HUGE. It came with a healthy portion of a side salad topped with a nice 1000 island dressing, lots of rice and beans and rojo sauce covering the enchilada and burrito. I had filled myself up a little too much on the chips and delicious and very spicy chipotle salsa, so I couldn't finish the plate. I ended up saving the burrito and half the rice and beans for dinner. All in all an excellent option for Mexican in the area. Will definitely be back. read more

Some things are done really, really well, and then some things are just "meh". This is my wife's favorite restaurant for the seafood soups and other seafood dishes. Unfortunately, I am not a big seafood fan. Usually, I get the burritos and they are huge and taste good. The beans and rice here are on point. However, now that we have a son and we flew out to California to visit family, I got tacos for my little guy to eat the meat (allergic to egg and milk, so meat works). They were all out of lengua (which is absolutely awesome here), so I ended up with carnitas and asada. Both were super dry and hard. They had good flavor but the meat felt like it was overcooked. The tacos themselves were the size of small burritos. However, the fact it was like a $2 steak in toughness really made me sad. I highly recommend if you come, stick with the seafood dishes or get the burritos. Tacos work for Lengua, if they are out, go with something else. read more

This place is so good. My boyfriend and his parents come here occasionally on Sunday's for breakfast. I'm not a huge breakfast fan, but the chorizo and eggs look amazing. It comes with fresh tortillas, rice, and beans. I love the burritos here. I'm a huge veggie burrito fanatic, so anywhere that has a great veggie option-I'm in! This place needs to be cleaned up...fron the outside parking lot to the entire inside. First the entrance is NOT on the corner, but on the side of the building....facing E.14th (I can't call it international)... when you walk in, you're walking in thru the kitchen/prep area (maybe the should use the front door), there are a couple of dining tables then you walk further into the building and there are 2 large dining areas, full of people a mariachi band and a couple of tv's blaring. What?! As many times I've passed this place, and had it bookmarked, I never knew all of this was hidden inside. So they don't have a full bar, but the micheladas were good and the chips...eh they were ok (store bought?)they came with 2 salsas and lime they were better with the guacamole tho. I'm sorry but I'm not sure how this place has 4 stars! I'll give it two because my crab was decent and my mom like the chicken soup broth. I was mainly looking forward to having some good chili verde but it was horrible. The coloring of Green was my first worry, then a few bites led to full on saltiness, and it took biting into four pieces of meat to finally get one that was meat and not fat. But it was hard and old tasting and of course salty. It's so hard to find a great plate of chili verde but out of my quest to find it this by far was the worse attempt. read more

Been coming here for almost 30 years now. Great seafood- the snapper is worth the trip to Oakland alone. Wife loves the carne asada platter and their kids meals are huge. Recently held a birthday lunch here- called a few days ahead, reserved a group of 25. When we arrived, tables were already set up, staff took orders promptly and checked on us throughout the lunch. Ordered a couple of buckets of beer and nachos to start, but the main dishes were out before we could finish appetizers. Everyone enjoyed their food, prices were reasonable, and service was impeccable. I highly recommend the camarones ala diabla (spicy shrimp) and the snapper with garlic sauce. read more

This is our favorite Mexican restaurant in Oakland - which has dozens of great Mexican restaurants. The portion sizes are ample, beans and tortillas made from scratch and delicious flautas, chili rellano, fresh (FRESH) salad and nice wait staff. It's nice to have a parking lot for this place, too. While the area looks more sketchy than it is, be aware and safe. In particular, the sidewalk outside this place is unusually high and sloped. Be careful, especially if you have a cerveza with dinner. Two stars off for ridiculous iced tea pricing. They charge $2.75 for one and $2.75 per refill. Lunch for 2 amounted to $29 with $11 of that for ICED TEA. I can't remember ever going anywhere where refills were charged at all, much less full price. I can't imagine a cheaper thing to serve other than water. Imagine our surprise when 2 iced teas and 2 refills came to more than 30% of our bill. This is a policy that needs to change so wait staff don't have to repeatedly explain stupidity to unsuspecting customers. FIX THIS, please. read more

My enchilada dinner came on the largest plate I've ever seen at any restaurant. The enchiladas are delicious and the rice and beans are excellent. I love their red sauce. Divey and uncharted restaurants are my thing. Every once in a while I'll come across a hidden gem that few people know about. I thought this might be the case with Tijuana Restaurant. The exterior looks hideous, the signage is dated and there's questionable people roaming the neighborhood. All perfect qualities of a hidden gem. The food on the other hand was horrendous. Ordered the carne asada plate and tostada de ceviche. Everything in the carne asada plate was cold. Rice, beans and steak. I compare the experience to showing up late to a bbq and making plate with left overs. The rice had little to no flavor. Cold beans are not the biz. But cold steak?! C'mon! The ceviche was outright disappointing. I consider myself a ceviche aficionado (I make ceviche at least once a month) and enjoy when a good restaurant saves me the preparation. The shrimp was tough and overly sour. This happens when it's been sitting in a container for multiple days. Quality day old ceviche doesn't have this taste. Good indication whatever I ate was sitting around for a while. Never a good sign when eating seafood. +1 star on the service and salsa. It's really the only good thing coming out of this place. read more

Tijuana Restaurant has been my go-to when I need a quick burrito since it is close to my apartment. I've had only their burrito and sope, so maybe it is a bit early to give it 5 stars, but both of them are/were excellent. The burrito's are freshly cooked and they have this zest in them that I can't explain. Most burritos generally taste similar and you can tell when the ingredients are low quality. Everything here tastes really fresh. Not to mention the size of the burrito. It's absolutely massive and well-priced. I usually eat only half unless I'm starving. They also include nachos with your burrito, which is a wonderful touch. I've been meaning to write this review for some time as I've been going here. If you are ever in the area, you should check this out for an authentic Mexican dining experience. They also seem to have a parking lot, though I always walk. Tijuana is definitely not situated in the best area, but this is usually where the best restaurants are. Our party of 16, came in on a friday evening, in search of cheap good eats. They sat us in the back room, and were super accomodating for our large party. The waitresses provided us with plenty of pitchers of water, and for the most part got all the orders served to us without any mistakes and in a timely manner. The salsa for the chips tasted slightly smoky and extra spicy. Yum! I ordered the a Torta with grilled pork, which was alright. It was missing slices of avocado, and the pork was slightly dry. Next time I'll stay away from the "taqueria" items, and stick with the platters, like the fried fish, enchilada's, and chile relleno's. I can't write a review without mentioning the Michelada's. Which was by far the highlight of the meal. Perfect amount of tomato, lime, and beer poured into a salt rimmed chilled glass. I'm drooling right now just thinking about it. The real deal in Oak Town. Been going here with my family for over 15 years and just as delicious as the first time I went. I love their seafood mariscada, but sadly no one else wants to share one with me whenever I go to visit as of late! I usually get their camarones a la plancha (grilled prawns) or their Siete Mares (7 Seas Soup) and both are delicious! Seafood is cooked perfectly every time. I love the corn tortillas they serve with most of their plates...definitely not the ones you see at the supermarket! The chips and salsa are amazing, I have to stop myself at time because I'll get full just on that with the endless refills! Their homemade drinks of horchata and tamarindo are legit as well. Let me first start by saying the other day I ordered a chile relleno plate and it was wonderful. But then today I ordered two fish tacos (hard corn shell) and one shrimp taco (soft flower tortilla), and there was nothing satisfying other than it being something to put in my stomach while I find somewhere else to get something to eat. Prior to ordering, I called in to ask if the taco orders came with rice and beans. The cashier answered me by replying "Yes! It comes with rice, beans, and even salad." You could keep the salad. All I would have liked were some beans and rice as I was lead to believed came with my order. If the tacos were the least bit satisfying, I wouldn't be making this negative review. We had to order shrimp burritos from Tacos Sinaloa down the street. Thanks for the tasty chile rellenos. I'll never order tacos from this place again. read more
