I used to be a semi-fan but now I'm a super-fan!! Their dim sum items are high quality, very fresh and super tasty. Ranging from $5.50 and above, I think they are decently priced. I used to be the person who said "only eat dim sum for brunch/lunch" cause that's how they do it in Asia. But I'm converted to eating it for both brunch/lunch and dinner. I've heard some great things about this restaurant from colleagues of mine. Today, I decided to check them out before a show in the neighborhood. First off, it's nice to know they care about cleanliness; hand sanitizers provided for guest on the floor and bathroom was quite clean, spill on the floor was taken care of quickly.. We decided to support this local dim sum place right before indoor dining got shut down again. It was quiet on a Sunday afternoon. Everything was fresh and delicious. When you come in they hand you a pencil and clipboard with a dim sum check out list plus drink menu. I can't believe this is Michelin rated. The menu is on the paper which doubles as a plate holder. We ordered the sticky rice in lotus leaf, braised chicken feet with abalone sauce and peanut, steamed shrimp dumplings, deep fried spring roll with egg white and shrimp, steamed rice with minced beef and pan fried egg, steamed rice roll with shrimp and Chinese chives, steamed rice roll with minced beef, and congee with pork and preserved egg. This area, the battle of two solid dim sum places: Dim Sum Palace and Tim Ho Wan. In my experience, it's really hard to pick a winner. Neither seems "better", just "different". Dim Sum Palace offers a ton of variety, whereas Tim Ho Han has a more focused approach. In both places, what you choose can be the difference whether you think it's "good" or a "solid homerun". At Tim Ho Han, the homerun is the bbq pork rice roll (which can test truly how good your chopstick skills are); At Palace, it's the crab soup dumplings, and shrimp dumplings. read more

I think this can quality the must-try place for dim sum in NYC! 1. Pork bun : my favorite dish here. Actually I never tried baked buns before. The crispy outside goes really well with the filling. 2. Sticky rice in lotus leaf : a very traditional dish. Really delicious. Super hot inside so don't get into rush tasting it. 3. Custard sesame ball : go for it!! The custard is so good. 4. Fried shrimp and eggplant: tender shrimp. I recommend. 5.steamed egg cake: my friend's favorite. Perfect sweetness and really light. 6. Har Gow: tastes good like normal ones I used to get. 7.beef rice rolls: this is a bit lacking. I tried better rice rolls in Guangdong. 8. The deep fried dumplings with pork and dried shrimp had a nice crunchy, chewy outer shell and good amount of filling. Big fan of steamed rice roll with minced beef in general, but this one tasted like it had fish mixed in with the beef which is off putting, disappointing. Obviously I wouldn't know this branch exists if I didn't walk pass it on Valentine's day. The wait was only about 15 mins for us on Saturday afternoon at around 4:30pm. I've heard the one at East Village always have a long line so we considered ourselves lucky! The dim sums here are definitely much better than the ones you get from Chinatown(s). Selection is very limited though. My favorites were the siumai and friedeggplant . The charsiu bun is not as impressive as people say (but that's likely becuz I am not a charsiu bun girl, at all). One thing to definitely avoid: the Hong Kong style milk tea. It was extremely blend ; very disappointing and therefore not showing its picture! Get a milk tea from Vivi across the street intead if needed for a similar price. Avg $30/pp (we were a group of three girls and we were stuffed!!!!!!). I'd say this is a 4/5 place. Instead of waiting in lines to place an order, I ordered over the phone while on my way there and they approximated 30 minutes for the order to be ready for pick up. This Dimsum place was extremely disappointing. Although I do understand the style of "Dimsum eating", the portions provided for some of the foods for the price paid was just not nearly enough. The plates ranged from $5 to $7 per plate, and the plates usually only had 3 little fingerfood-sized portions. For example, an eggplant dish we ordered was 3 thin slices of eggplant, and they charged around $6 for just that. I would only recommend this place if you want brunch for two or a smaller party. I (mistakenly) came here with my entire family plus one, and even an entire table full of plates was just not enough and did not leave anyone feeling satiated after this meal. The lack of variety on the menu was also disappointing. There was only one noodle option, and one of the very, very few vegetarian and vegan meals they offered was basically just boiled lettuce. I ordered the famous BBQ Pork Buns, and that was the only order I got that I was actually satisfied with. The plate only served 3, and I ended up also having to get another plate (because it was being shared with almost 5 people). These buns were delicious. They had a crunchy, sweet "bun" and a very flavorful and rich pork filling. On the other hand, I was very dissatisfied with the shrimp rice rolls. Although normal rice rolls do lack flavor, this particular rice roll was so bland that I had to completely submerge it in soy sauce just to get some flavor. It was also only just three 2 inch rolls, and its ratio of the roll to shrimp was about 5:1. The only dishes at this place that are at all worth your money and time would be the fried noodles, which is a decent portion size and a sticky rice cake which was also more filling than the other options. All in all, if I were to consider coming here again, I would only order the BBQ Pork Buns. However, this Dimsum was underwhelming and in all honesty, I genuinely wouldn't come here again. read more

The menu is very tuned to western palate, safe and probably the all time typical favorites and best sellers at dim sum place. Understandable. Price wise, definitely not your usual but this is understandable too. Portion wise.... hmmm.. okay. So this makes me put a lot of expectation on the food itself. You better deliver Tim Ho Wan.... I was impressed by the nice lotus leaf sticky rice. Well done, flavorful without being too oily and generous ingredients inside. HK french toasts and sesame balls were good. Love that there is yelp waitlist option here and if you come before lunch time, you won't have any issues getting a table for two. They also have some larger booths to fit party of six or so. Prices are expected to be higher considering manhattan location. If you want tasty dim sum head to Flushing or Brooklyn Chinatown for the better tasting experience. We had a great meal at Tim Ho Wan in midtown. I was excited to check out this location after trying the downtown one earlier that same week. We had to wait about forty five minutes to sit down. We ordered the bbq buns (my favorite), sticky rice, shrimp dumplings, vegetable dumplings, pig knuckles, and a couple of beers. We tried ordering the chef's special but that wasn't ready yet at this location. The food came out fast and hot and was great. We really enjoyed the selection of food we ordered. Although I feel like the food is maybe slightly different than the locations in Hong Kong, I feel like the NYC locations (this one included) is just as good. My boyfriend and I came here around noon on a Saturday for the dim sum of course, but there was a sign on the door saying they were full for the lunch hour (until 3pm). Thankfully he was a good sport and we came back at 4:50pm, 10 minutes before dinner and there were already a couple of other people in line! At 5, we were seated promptly, and they asked if we knew how to order and if we wanted any drinks. Their house tea is $1 each (tbh I thought it would be complimentary), but it was very refreshing in between plates. We ordered and marked the menu, and I was surprised and how small the selection was for dim sum, but that made it easy and fast to order since each item had pictures to accompany them. All items came out in literally no time and the service was great! For five plates it was about $30. BBQ pork buns: a must try! It was less pillow-y and less soft than other ones I've had, but crispy even instead. Great balance of salty and sweet. Har gow (shrimp dumplings): very yummy and better than others I've tried. They have a very small waiting area, however, since the waitlist is through yelp We decided to walk around the neighborhood returned when we received a text telling us we were close to the front of the line. We has ordered 5 plates. It took about 10-15 mins to come out, which I guess was reasonable given that the restaurant was very crowded. I saw this dim sum place opened in Hell's kitchen a few months ago. I have been to the one in Hong Kong and was amazed at the quality/price so when they opened in east village, I checked it out and was very disappointed. Maybe if I had not ben to the original Hong Kong one, I may not have been disappointed but since I know the original quality and price, I definitely was.. and never returned to the east village one but I decided to give another try to this new location. So, the service is excellent. Our waiter was really friendly. Also, the food isn't bad, either. Actually a bit better than the e. village location. Just really expensive and not big portioned though. And somehow, it wasn't too fresh to me. Personally, I like cart bustling dim sum houses where I can look and just grab my own dishes. So for the price I paid here, I'd rather go to those dim sum houses with carts in c-town that taste better, quicker and a lot cheaper, but of course the nice waiting service won't be there. If you have heard about the famous tim ho wan and haven't checked out the place yet, it's worth a visit.. Alright I have to give them the benefit of the doubt since the restaurant has only been open 2 full days-The service wasn't great (especially the hostess who was making people wait even though there were clearly plenty of open tables) but...the food more than made up for it. I absolutely loved my experience at Tim Ho Wan in Hong Kong, and this location serves up dim sum just as good. Food: I had the beef balls (my personal favorite), plain rice rolls, chicken steamed rice-did not expect this to be as good as it was...the rice was sublime and the chicken was unbelievably tender. Lastly, I had the fried milk sticks- I didn't quite enjoy these as much, kind of a weird taste all around. I'll have to try the other desserts next time. Service- Already mentioned the poor service at the front, my server was good. I especially had great service from one of the food runners, William. He noticed I had ordered the milk sticks (a dessert), it was ready first, but he offered to bring it at the end instead like a traditional dessert-very nice. Atmosphere- Definitely not your stereotypical Chinese/dim sum restaurant vibe. Very trendy, Manhattan feel all around. My brother, still obsessed with dim sum, and I have been on a quest finding the best dim sum place in NYC. However, due to the coronavirus, we have been a bit iffy about going to Chinatown or Flushing. I know some may find this silly, but it is safe than sorry I suppose.
