Steamed Pork Spare Rib with Black Bean - Dry, lacked flavor 2.) Steamed Dumplings with Shrimp and Chives - Chives overpowered the dumplings and shrimp didn't have much seasoning 3.) Steamed Shrimp Dumplings - Best part of our meal and the only thing I would get again 4.) Wontons in Hot & Spicy Sauce - Not spicy at all, very sweet 5.) We thought our lunch at Tim Ho Wan was good, but I don't quite understand what the hype is about. Don't get me wrong, it was a perfectly fine lunch, but it's received so much media attention and accolades, but I like other dim sum restaurants in town more than Tim Ho Wan (think: One Dragon, Golden Dim Sum, etc.) I really liked the steamed shrimp dumplings, the fried rice, and the Chinese broccoli. And I liked their baked BBQ pork dumplings (unique because they're baked instead of steamed and have a crispy crust of sugar on top), but I may prefer traditional steamed dumplings instead. Overall, the food was good, and I liked it. Service was very nice. My only complaint is that our server wasn't very helpful when it came to portions--we asked her if we ordered too much, and she just replied, "well, you can always get more." The food came staggered which was good since we ordered so much food. Everything was great. The cucumbers were cut too big for my taste but had a good flavor. Impression to this place to me is a nice and clean restaurant, bathroom is very spacey and clean, server is not really that friendly but is acceptable. Table is kind of small for dim-sum dishes since it most likely comes with multi small plates. Foods are good it kind of a bit expensive (9 dishes with pot of tea $74) compared to others but it tastes not bad. The special chef eggplant and shrimp is good but a bit salty, I have to order extra bowl of rice just to eat with this. My favorite will be Chicken Feet, dessert Sesame Ball lava fillings and shrimp rice roll. Deep fried egg roll with shrimp and egg white can be super good too if it doesn't get soaked with the soy sauce while handling to our table. Siu mai and Har how are good as well. read more

Houston THW was very good all around tho the ham sui gok were on the small side, the shumai was not our fave and the bbq pork buns (their specialty) needed more temp heat. Tim Ho Wan has been hyped up a lot recently but it was nothing special in my opinion. The day I went, service was really slow and it took 10 mins just to get some water (it wasn't busy). My favorite items were the shrimp rice rolls, bbq pork buns, and shrimp fried rice. I love chili oil wontons but their version had no spice and more of a vinegar based sauce. I was very excited to try this place in Katy. There are just a few in the US and so I had to give it a try since I was working in the area. The service was very good and the food came out quick. It is in a new strip mall and the place was clean and just a basic strip mall looking restaurant. We tried about 15 different things on the menu and we enjoyed everything. The food quality was good and we loved the variety. Each item was around $7 or so which is not bad. It is a great place to go to try a variety of good quality Dim Sum. We were so excited to finally try THW after months of waiting due to the long waitlist. We were seated immediately but it took awhile for someone to even approach our table to get our drink order. The house hot tea had absolutely no flavor. The rice rolls were all out of stock which made no sense as they just opened on a Sunday. With a limited menu already it was very disappointing. All of the food we ordered was Mid. Now the 1 star is for the service. The staff seemed not trained enough, can't work under pressure or just merely doesn't care. We never had 1 server it was random waiters each time so we could never even ask someone for something because they would never return to our table. We finished all of our food and 2 dishes had not came out yet. After waiting 10-15 minutes we had to track someone down to cancel the items and get our ticket to pay. Another 10 minutes goes by. High hopes were in place when making plans to come to Tim ho wan. Maybe it was their 3 year wait before finally opening in Katy's growing Asiatown but I was ultimately left disappointed. Perhaps if I set my expectations for a regular dim sum place I wouldn't have felt this way. First off, the menu is severely restricted and does not have that many options. At the time we went, which was Chinese New Year of 2023, the steamed rice rolls were unavailable. Recent photos seem to show that it is still the case. For that much time to prep, I would think the full menu would be up and running. While I understand that they want it to be an 'upscale' dim sum location, I don't think that the few dishes they chose were all home runs. The steamed dumplings with shrimp and chives and har gow were more reminiscent of traditional dim sum but on the blander side. It was balanced out with the steamed beef balls with bean curd skin though since that was a bit saltier. The beef balls were a bit mushy though, so if anyone has issues with texture of food, you might not like them. One of their most popular dishes is the baked BBQ bun, which I did enjoy. It took traditional bbq buns and added a sugar crust for an additional hint of sweetness. Best eaten fresh, since I assume the crust will become soggy if you get it to go. As pictured with the buns, we had the beef soup that was way smaller in portion than what the menu made it out to be. Also less noodles and meat in it than pictured. It was just your basic beef soup. A little oily, nothing to write home about. Not a super traditional dim sum dish but I love me some soup so here we were. Lastly, the deep fried spring rolls are pictured and these had a good filling but were extremely oily. In the last picture, we had the sesame balls (with lava custard instead of the traditional red bean), which were ok albeit slightly too sweet for me. The steamed bean curd was similar to the steamed beef ball. Overall, it was an underwhelming lunch. While I know it was probably slightly busier due to the CNY holiday, over an hour wait for the food we had was not worth it. If the wait wasn't so ridiculous and the prices were lower, it would be a decent spot. But they seem to be trying to fill the upscale dim sum hole that Yautcha left behind when it left Galleria but missed the mark. My advice, just go to Ocean Palace or Golden Dim sum. The food here was great! Reasonably priced and proportioned. Everything was well-flavored too, especially the pork bbq buns. They also did the spicy wontons really well, and most Cantonese restaurants usually don't so that was a huge plus! They have a limited menu but it's all the classics and I really enjoyed everything we ordered. Place was clean as well, but packed. Service was fine, no major qualms. We've been patiently waiting their opening, but didn't want to go too early so the lines would die down, and the staff would get more accustomed to the day to day business. We were pleasantly surprised after our first visit here. We tried to get a little bit of everything so we could see what the hype is about. Apparently their Hong Kong location has held 1 Michelin star for a long time. We tried their: Siu Mai - classic dim sum, you can't go to a dim sum place without trying these, 5/5 for freshness Steamed Shrimp Dumlings (Har Gow) - another dim sum staple, chewy and good texture on the shrimp, a tad under seasoned but still very fresh 4/5 Baked BBQ Pork Buns - COME HERE FOR THESE ALONE, these are the BEST baked bbq pork buns I've EVER HAD 100/5 Blanched Chinese Broccoli w/ Fried Garlic - simple yet delicious. Chinese broccoli was tender with great garlicky flavor 5/5 Braised Chicken Feet w/ Abalone Sauce and Peanuts - this was by far the least liked dish. Chicken feet is just better at all of the other dim sum places we've been to. Not as flavorful as we were expecting, but at least they were tender 2/5 Steamed Rice Roll w/ Minced Beef - super chewy and full of meat, the savory sauce had a subtle sweetness to it also, really good 5/5 Wontons in Hot Spicy Sauce - tons of flavor in this! Long waitlist, I arrived before they opened but there was a long line already outside. For a table for 3, we had to wait over one hour. The dim sum was very disappointing! Service was actually good for us, so the star rating is all about the food. The menu was not that big. The har gao and shu mai were decent, not great though. The chicken feet were not flavorful. The turnip cake was good. The pork buns were great!! But small. They had non-dim sum items too. The braised beef was not cooked long enough to have the soft, break apart texture. It was also lacking in flavors. I was expecting something tasty like Vietnamese style braised beef (bo kho), but this was not a dish at all. Also, very pricey. The cucumber salad was very good. The only items I would recommend is the pork buns and the cucumber salad, but neither are so special that you couldn't get from another restaurant. I go to Tim Ho Wan for quality and freindegriedents and it is now my go to place dim sum in Houston. I went on a Saturday morning during 4th of July weekend, and it was PACKED. Luckily, they allowed us to sit at the bar and skip the 30 minute wait altogether. The service from our "bartender" was subpar at best. He also acted as a server going to other tables and catered to his other tables before us, however I will give him the benefit of the doubt since it was more busy than usual. Onto the food, it typically comes out piping hot, however it was warm, and again, I am giving them the benefit of the doubt since it was a holiday and they were primarily focused on getting food onto the customers' tables. All items were very tasty and each had immaculate flavors. I highly recommend my personal staples when eating dim sum - steamed shrimp dumplings, chinese broccoli, bbq pork bun, turnip cake, and deep fried dumplings. Overhyped, Overpriced. Underwhelming. Don't let my pictures fool ya, but I'm sorry but this was the worst hyped up restaurant I've ever been to! Quite depressing actually because I left disappointed and even hangrier than before! As if the menu wasn't small enough, half the items weren't available for ordering!! Second, I did mentioned above that the menu was very limited. They crossed out the whole rice roll section. So obviously we ordered other stuff but a few seconds later, we were told they didn't have anymore Chinese broccoli. Like you guys just opened for business.. how is already sold out or unavailable?! Third, food was mediocre at best. Presentation of it was horrible! Nothing was appetizing to the eyes. It was poorly executed. I'll break it down to ya below: Shu Mai - You can get these anywhere. Nothing special about it. Juicy but extremely bland. And super tiny! Har Gow - The smallest I've ever seen. Shrimp wasn't bouncy or flavorful. Skin was too chewy! Spicy Cucumbers - This was the worst dish of all. Literally $8 for plain cucumbers covered in sesame seeds. No salt, no umami flavors or anything. Not even spicy! Mind you, I'm a little wuss when it comes to spice but these had absolutely no flavor to it. Just plain cucumbers! Braise beef - Didn't like it. Beef was not tender at all. Tough and chewy. It's like an underwhelming flavorless beef stew w/ daikons. Chicken feet - These were okay. The chicken feet was very tender and huge. But it lack depth. It's lightly coated in soy but needed more salt? It was just bland and gelatinous. Not bad but I like the traditional chicken feet better. Also because the peanuts threw me off. Not big on how that tasted. Steamed bean curd - the bean curd was stuffed with shrimp and veggies. Still very bland and lack flavor. Extremely soggy. and I love bean curd too but these were just not good. Steamed shrimp & chive dumplings - These faired way better than all the other dishes. Filled with lots of chives which I liked! Wish they added more salt or something. It was just chives and shrimp. Again, no flavor. Sesame lava balls - I'm not a sweets person but these were interesting. Super gooey custard inside. I enjoyed it but not the best. Pan fried turnip - these came out last and I was so over it so I didn't bother taking a picture or ate any. This place simply does not live up to its hyped. Sighs I really wanted to like it here because of how I heard it was a great elite dim sum place. Unfortunately the food and service were not up to par. Let's start with the service at the beginning... I got in line on the Yelp app and it said 45-50 minute wait, no biggie since we can just walk around the the complex near hmart. Yes that is a good thing but then we had 8-10 minutes to get there or else we forfeit our table. We had stuff in our hands about to check out and still had to drive there. The two stars comes here because I called and spoke with someone and they said we will hold the table. I get there the hostess had no clue what was going on and said they didn't have the table and I explained to her and she said hold on and we ended up getting a table. If it wasn't for this it be 1 star. The food... We order a variety of food such as baked bbq pork buns, steam pork dumplings, steam shrimp dumplings, steamy shrimp and chives, pan fried dumpling with ginger essence and chicken fried rice (kid's favorite). It just tastes ordinary nothing that stands out but the chicken fried rice stood out in a bad way. It was a very small amount for like 10 bucks. It lacked flavor and tasted like oiled rice with bland chicken. The food just wasn't great as it is made to be. Also when I went the steam rice rolls was taken off the menu. Sighs what can you do? The service again... We were seen once for our order and that's it. No follow up with how the food was or no refill on drinks. We had to hunt someone down just to get a to go box. Keep in mind, this isn't your traditional cart pushing dim sum place. You're paying for ambiance and a different take on familiar foods. Between the four of us, we ordered a variety of dishes. -Baked BBQ pork buns: This was unexpectedly flaky with the familiar pork BBQ taste. The first few bites were delicious, but the sweetness felt overpowering when I finished a whole bun to myself. -Congee: Nothing extraordinary about this congee, but it tasted fine once seasoned with some soy sauce. -Steamed pork spare rib with black bean sauce: Again, nothing extraordinary here. It tasted fine, but wasn't my favorite bite. -Siu mai: I've had my fair share of subpar siu mai, but this one needed 3 dedicated orders. The siu mai was moist and flavorful, even without the soy sauce. -Steamed egg cake: It looked like a dessert cake so I was intrigued. It actually is just egg and it was a pretty good, pretty sweet, egg. -Braised chicken feet: This was delicious. Definitely a must-try. We ordered a second plate of this. -Braised beef brisket with turnip: This was a pretty hefty portion, but the flavor was nothing new. It tastes like the standard braised beef you can make at home. -Fried rice with BBQ pork and shrimp: Nicely flavored. Nothing stood out here. -Chinese broccoli: This was probably the largest portion from the spread. Also, arguably, had the least flavor. -Steamed rice roll with shrimp: This was a standout. However, we noticed that they served in waves, so some people received food before we even got water. We tried their oolong tea, which was pretty standard. The baked bbq pork buns were delicious and crispy. Wontons in hot and spicy sauce was savory but not spicy. Steamed egg cake was palatable and moist. Har gow was tasteless and lacked flavor. The siu mai and steamed rice rolls were good but you can get them much cheaper at other dim sum places. I did enjoy the lava custard sesame balls. Custard inside was hot and gooey. Service was very attentive and they weren't rude like what other reviewers said. I honestly think other reviewers just hop on the bandwagon and say the service was rude and food was bad. We got there at 11:10am and waited for about an hour. They opened at 11:30am and the family in front of us got the last table so we had to wait for someone to finish. They need to be better organized and do more training for their waitstaff as the service was not smooth. We didn't get our tableware and drinks for a long time. When we got silverware, it was missing a set and took a while. Everything just took longer than it should have and we had to ask multiple times. Food was accidentally brought to our table in error. Our waiter Paul was very nice. The food was just okay. If I compared it to actual dim sum in Hong Kong, it wouldn't even be comparable to any average place there. For Houston, it is pretty good. A friend of ours has been wanting to try Dim Sum so we brought her here, but it was also our first time trying Tim Ho Wan. We chose this spot because of the convenience, as we would be hanging out near Katy Asia Town. We quickly realized it didn't offer as many options as other Dim Sum spots we've been to in Houston. For such hype, Tim Ho Wan's Katy location falls flat. First off, as someone not knowing much about the chain you expect a lot going for a dim sum restaurant. The first disappointment was how small the menu was. They have some staples like har gow, shiu mai, bbq pork buns, turnip cakes, and rice rolls (TBD), pork ribs in black bean sauce, sticky rice, steamed veggies - that was pretty much it. They were missing some items you would typically see at other restaurants like duck, roasted pork, taro balls, shrimp balls, etc (see menu in pics). Second was the service. If we didn't have our waitress hovering over us, she was nonexistent. A busboy was the one bringing us water and who flagged someone down to get us our check. Third was, sadly, the food. For a restaurant hailed to have won a Michelin star in Hong Kong, after our meal here we were left wondering: how? The har gow (imo) was the star. The shrimp was sweet and flavorful compared to other locations. Otherwise everything was subpar if not average at best. Turnip cakes were floppy and greasy. Bbq pork buns were made of more yeast-y bread with a pineapple-bun-esque top and it was way too sweet for me. The lava custard bun was gross; the filling tasted like the cream filling of a custard donut and had consistency of microwaved frosting. Coming from Sugar Land, Tim Ho Wan was not worth the drive. You can get tastier dim sum in Sugar Land or Bellaire. I won't be bringing family members here sadly, this just didn't live up to the hype. read more

It was a pretty nice place. Came here because of all the hype and was excited to try out the dim sum. They didn't have a waitlist online when we came so we just left our names at the front. The wait was ~1 hour but there's a Kinokuniya a few doors down so we honestly didn't mind the wait. The staff were all super friendly and quick. As for the food we ordered the following: BBQ pork buns- 11/10. To quote my friend "whoa". You need to order this if you come. Lava custard sesame seed balls-9/10. Very sweet and tasty Steamed pork spareribs -7/10. It was alright, tasty but not out of this world Sticky rice -7/10. Good filler food Osmanthus Jelly- 8/10. Super refreshing, good dessert to end on a refreshing note Overall, nice spot. Not michelin star level but I wouldn't mind coming back for those bbq buns. read more

Went with my parents on a Tuesday for lunch, and we were disappointed. I had already heard mixed reviews, but still wanted to give this place the benefit of the doubt. The restaurant was not that busy and our food came out quickly, but the food was not hot and was very mediocre. It was also on the pricier side. Not to mention, the service was awful. We had to flag down a waiter to refill our teapot twice, and no one ever came to check up on us during our meal. There is, however, one upside to this visit. There were two menu items I would return for (probably to-go)--the bbq pork buns and the sesame balls. Both were crispy and extremely flavorful. Overall, there are better places to get dim sum for a more reasonable price. read more

Finally able to try it since they opened in Katy, TX. I know they are very popular in a lot of the Asian countries. So very excited when they opened one here in Texas. The decor is nice and the area has a lot of seating. The lighting inside is pretty good. I think it's newt that dinnerware matches the with their name on it. Service was awesome and they are very accommodating. Also, food came quickly after ordering. We came in for late dinner to beat the crowd and it was a success! We ordered several items from their menu. Our favorite was the baked bbq buns. I ordered the braised beef brisket with thin rice noodles in soup and it was amazing! The brisket was tender, and the noodles were cooked perfectly. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. Will definitely come back to try of their food items. read more

After approximately 3 years of waiting since before covid, the world famous Tim Ho Wan dim sum restaurant finally opened for business in Katy, Texas. The hype behind this Michelin starred dim sum place had built up to such a crescendo that was nearly impossible to meet. We got there over an hour early before it even opened on Sunday so we could be seated right when they opened (instead of waiting til later and being placed on a waitlist that was lasting 2-3 hrs). Overall, the food was fine but we would definitely not recommend waiting more than 1-2 hrs for it. I loved their famous baked bbq buns as well as surprisingly their refreshing osmanthus jelly. Everything else was in my opinion just fine for any dim sum restaurant, except for the chicken feet which were disappointing to me. Still not quite sure how this got a Michelin star rating. read more

Came in on Saturday for lunch and waited only 15 mins. The food came on fast and our favorite was just the sticky rice. The rest was just average tbh...for the rice roll, I don't think the waitress knew how it worked. She asked if we wanted sauce aka soy sauce and when she poured it, it was literally swimming in it...I'm like God damn...we trying to make the rice rolls float in the kiddy pool of soy sauce?
