3.5 stars. I honestly expected the food to be a bit better for the hype but it was fine. A few items needed a bit more salt and flavor, such as the beef rolls and the pan fried noodles. I remember stumbling across Tim Ho Wan in Honolulu, Hawaii back in 2021 and I wondered why it only had a 3 star rating even though it's supposed to be this very hyped chain. The line was too long for me to see for myself, but now after dining at the Katy location twice I can say that if it's anything like this location then it was appropriately rated. I tried THW when it first opened and I wasn't impressed. I decided to give it another try this past weekend since I didn't want to travel far for dim sum and I left underwhelmed again. The food took awhile to come out. We ordered the har gow, baked bbq pork buns, pan fried turnip cake, garlic string beans, deep fried dumplings with pork and dried shrimp, and the steamed rice roll with shrimp. Nothing was exceptional. There were only two memorable moments from what I can remember: 1) the fried dumpling wasn't very oily like most places so that's a plus and 2) the consistency of the steamed rice roll was not good. It seemed like for this dish the rice roll was too thick and somewhat dry so it kept crumbling apart. This was most disappointing because this is my favorite dim sum item. Texas has no Michelin star restaurants,however the original Tim Ho Wan does. I was really excited to try this place out but I was left slightly unimpressed. The place itself is very nice and clean. The service was non existent though. We came on a Saturday night and although it was kinda busy, it would've been nice to be checked on. We asked for napkins, refills and utensils a couple times and never ended up getting them. We ordered about 6 different plates. Our favorites were the pork noodles & shrimp eggplants; super yummy! First heard of this place from a family member who was talking about how this place is from the same person who has a michellin star at another location in another state. I was intrigued so we decided to go, 4 of us altogether. As soon as we arrived we were seated, wasn't too busy so we thought that'd be a good thing. But service was lacking. Our waiters did take quite a while to come grab our order, as well as they never checked on us throughout our meal. We had to flag them down for water a few times as well as to get their attention to order more items. Taste wise it was all okay, very simple. But nothing stood out or was that unique. So I don't quite understand the hype for the place. Presentation was nice though. Just overall I wasn't impressed and it wasn't too memorable of an experience. I had a delightful visit to Tim Ho Wan's. It's been on my list since before it arrived, and then life got busy and I hadn't made it until now. In no particular order, here is what we had: Pan Fried noodles - 4/5 kind of bland but in a weirdly good way? They were a nice template for all of the other food. Spicy cucumber - 5/5 spicy, slightly sweet. These were absolutely my favorite! Taro cream - 2/5 disappointing. Hardly any flavor but not inedible. Beef noodle soup - 3/5 I've had better. The flavor was good, the soup was oily. The beef was a bit tough. Fried turnip cake - 4/5 I really liked these but my son and husband did not. They're delicate but a bit on the oily side. Wonton in spicy sauce - 0/5 these came out and looked so good but tasted like nothing! The sauce was just oily, even though you could see spices and peppers. So odd! I really hate giving such a low rating but my gosh, it was simply terrible. I've had Tim Ho Wan for more than a decade starting from Hong Kong, then in NYC and Vegas. The baked bbq buns were not even hot but room temperature. Then the braised chicken feet was super salty. The pan-fried noodles were dry and bland. Then the biggest disappointment was the steamed rice noodle with shrimps. The rolls were super thick and they used shrimp paste instead of real shrimps. It was mushy and overcooked. They definitely can't call them Dim Sum Specialists. It's a disgrace! They are a bit pricey and I was expecting good quality food but I was wrong. Servers were nice and quick to refill water. I had heard about Tim Ho Wan when it first opened awhile back in Katy Asia Town. It's supposedly a really good 'Michelin star' dim sum brand from abroad so the place got a lot of attention and a lot of folks going to try it out. I never made it out on a weekend to try it, which is typically when it's enjoyed with family/friends. Yesterday I was in the area and happen to want dim sum so I thought if it's not so busy, I could give it a try. I found a waitlist option on Yelp and signed up but upon arrival, there really wasn't a need for it. We were one of four groups being serviced. This was around 2pm on a Tuesday so great for us. No crowd! Food wise, we tried some of the typical dim sum items and whatever is dubbed as popular. First dish that came out was the baked Bbq pork buns - WOW. I could just fill up on these! Outside is crunchy sweet. Inside is soft with a tasty bbq pork filling. Love the sweet and savory contrast. The size was perfect too. Then the Chinese broccoli and steamed rice roll with shrimp came out. The broccoli was very slippery. With a thick stalk, we lost a few to the cause. Lol The sauce was runny. I'm used to having thick oyster sauce on this. Rice roll was good. Texture is on par with what I'm used to and as expected. Flavor was all there. After that, the steamed shrimp dumpling and bean curd came out. The steamed shrimp dumpling was hot and tasted good. The bean curd probably came out warm but by the time I tried it, it was more like room temperature cool. I thought it was tasty but the sauce was a bit thick in texture for my preference. Lastly, the steamed pork dumplings. These are my favorite dim sum dish! The ones here were just as good and came out hot. Interesting to see raisins as garnish on it. I don't recall tasting the raisin so these dumplings were still good to me. For the most part, food was good and there was one stellar dish. Service was quick and as expected. Love that the items came out as it's ready. Ambiance is definitely different given that it was on a weekday and no crowds. Overall positive experience. Pretty disappointing. I've eaten at THW's original location in Hong Kong where they earned a Michelin star for their char siu bao (baked bbq pork bun). I'm not at all holding the same expectations for this Katy locale, but I can confidently say they're not winning a Michelin star anytime soon. We ordered char siu bao, chicken feet, steamed rice roll with shrimp, and pan fried noodles. The chicken feet came out first and had cilantro on top. What? I've ordered this dozens of times from numerous different eateries and this is the first I've ever seen it garnished with cilantro. I had them bring us a fresh order without it because I didn't want that "soap" aftertaste. Next, the steamed roll with shrimp looked good from outside, but once we took a bite we noticed they used shrimp paste instead of whole shrimps. Pretty disappointing. Then the pan fried noodles were not crispy at all. They were soft. Another disappointment. Finally the char siu bao which should be the star of the show. The outside was pale and not golden brown like it should be. Then it wasn't even warm when biting into it. It should be warm out of the oven. The staff were friendly which was the only highlight. I visited on a Sunday morning, arriving just after 11 AM, and was seated promptly. The restaurant's size sets it apart from the typical Asian dim sum places in Bellaire as it is smaller. The food is delicious and notably less greasy than traditional dim sum. The Rice Noodle in XO sauce lacked a bit of flavor, so I added a touch of soy sauce to enhance it. The Sui Mai was served piping hot, and the shrimp ball was generously filled and had a satisfying crispy exterior. My personal favorite is the baked BBQ bao, but it tends to be on the sweeter side due to the snow cap on top. read more

Had a great lunch that was fresh, hot, and delicious. It was a Friday at 11am but no wait. Very polite staff and the restaurant is clean and tidy. We ordered their famous baked BBQ pork buns, and they were as spectacular as promised. Also ordered braised Chinese broccoli (tasty but hard to eat with chopsticks), which is a good counterpoint to all the meat and seafood dishes. We got lots of various dumplings with shrimp, pork, etc. All excellent in flavor, freshness, and quality. Don't miss the unique lava sesame balls for dessert. Highly recommended. read more

Not all Tim Ho Wans are the same the one in IRVINE CA is terribly mediocre. There is Dim Sum Box just around corner here in Katy Asia Town (larger serving sizes) , but this Tim Ho Wan is my favorite . They do not pre cook like most - hence fresh/ hot and tasty. Want more spice - add chili oil . My only complaint when first opened they provided free yellow HOT mustard . Now NO MORE. Very cool to have such an iconic restaurant in Katy! It can get quite busy on the weekends, but the wait goes by fast. I recommend trying the Har Gow, Siu Mai, and Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf. They are dim sum classics, but Tim Ho Wan does a great job with elevating these dishes. The meats are so tender and juicy. I highly recommend giving Tim Ho Wan a try. I'm from NYC and was visiting my parents in Texas for winter. The morning after landing in IAH, I asked my mom if she wanted to try Michelin star dim sum (even if it's not at the actual Michelin rated location) because I don't get to treat my mom very often since I live so far away. We pulled up to the perfect parking spot right in front of the restaurant and since it was midday, we were so hungry and excited to go in. Right off the bat, the vibes... were kind of off. We were standing exactly where the sign indicated to "wait to be seated" at the entrance but were not acknowledged by anybody until many, many minutes later when I finally fully stepped inside and made my presence known. We were greeted by a non-Asian host who also happened to be our server. She had a hard time answering some of our questions and we had a hard time communicating with her so eventually, we gave up and went straight to pointing at the menu. The food was absolutely phenomenal and there wasn't one dish I didn't like. Very consistent in flavor with what I had in NYC as well. I particularly loved the baked bbq pork buns - the sugary savory glaze inside paired with the crunchy exterior was the perfect combination of textures. I also liked the lotus wrapped sticky rice - a splurge but a guilty pleasure of mine that I will always order regardless of where I go for dim sum - the portion size here was huge and we were given a big spoon to tackle it. I gave my mom a heaping scoop of sticky rice with all the protein - chicken and Chinese sausage - so I don't know how that tasted but according to my mom, it was "really good" (I had the remaining rice with a piece of mushroom and I agreed the flavor was good and full of umami richness). My mom's favorite dim sum here were the rice rolls - she ordered beef and I got shrimp but I ended up giving her most of my shrimp rice roll since she liked it so much. The rice roll held its shape well without falling apart and the flavors of the protein inside were seasoned just enough without being overpowering (because remember, it's meant to be eaten with soy sauce). If this review was JUST about the food, it's undeniably a solid 5/5 from me. The reason I had to give this Tim Ho Wan a 2/5 is primarily due to our experience being the most uncomfortable I have ever been (this is saying a lot considering I've been a food reviewer for a decade and alive for even longer) and we were made to feel that way the entire time we were there. We had other people's orders arrive at our table by mistake and the server kept asking us to repeat ourselves every time we spoke - my mom speaks English fluently and occasionally, her slight bit of accent would show but I definitely don't have an accent and even after I repeated my mom's words to her, our server would still ask for another round of clarification and I was not about to shout in a room full of people. For anyone thinking maybe it was just loud at the restaurant, it was not; this is a civilized Chinese brunch-food restaurant in a suburban area of Houston not a nightclub (it's also not like NYC's chinatown). This uncalled for, repeated offense ultimately made my mom feel insecure and she eventually lost the giddy mood we initially came into the restaurant with. I'm very observant (especially because of my profession) and I picked up on it as soon as the smile left her face so I had her go to the restroom to freshen up so I could take her shopping afterwards and reassured her that I will personally deal with the staff myself and take care of the check in the meantime. At this time, the manager wandered over to my table and we conversed in Cantonese. He was somewhat friendly, asking how we liked the food and if it was our first time dining at THW because "it looked like it" (part of me was dying to reply with "Is this your server's first job? Because 'it looked like it' too") but I'm sure he did not mean it like that so instead, I went with a vague, polite response without getting into details because I frankly did not wish for us to spend another minute there. **If any member of management takes the time to read this review, I sincerely hope that you consider implementing methods towards improvement because this really could have been the best dining experience with the food being so good but was ruined by the service. There was no one more excited than I was for Tim Ho Wan's arrival to Katy Asian Town. Having lived in the city (#1) where they first attained their fame and coming from another (#2) when they first made their way to the US (#2), I was hoping this location would mark a turning point in the area's lukewarm Dim Sum scene. Sadly this wasn't it. While they may have a decent amount of seating, this is not an ideal place to take a group. Dim Sum for 2? Easily. But any more than that it's a gamble, save for the two private group-friendly rooms buried in the back. I like what they did with the decor, but I sense it'll wear quickly given the amount of people that are here all the time. And that's the good news: folks from all over continue to flock here, making it one of the more active spots in the plaza. People are quick to jump on the Michelin star bit (#3) and are usually disappointed when they realize it's not even up to their usual standards. Even the staff is mostly non-Canto speaking and may butcher a dish or two. Food wise, there were some bright spots. I think the baked BBQ pork buns are good and is easily their highlight item with the crispy crust on top and a sweet mix of BBQ pork filling from within. I also don't mind their crispy shrimp rolls, and their minced beef over rice with egg is tasty with the soy sauce. Ultimately the rest of the food floated between mediocre to disappointing, especially when given the price. The sticky rice in lotus leaf was a bit on the dry side, pan fried noodles with pork was bland, the pan fried turnip cake needed some serious sauce to muster much flavor, and I thought their wontons in hot sauce was very lackluster. It also didn't help that it took me multiple visits to even sample most of the menu since much of it was often not available at all. Service is the real kicker. During their busiest days, it's a challenge to flag down someone on their team and more often waiting (whether to be seated or simply to be served) is more common than eating. Attentive servers were noticeably absent during all of my visits, which is a real let down in the end. I've definitely put in my fair share of visits here, but I'm really hoping they'll find a way to correct the course in the coming months. I have been to Tim Ho Wan in Hawaii and New York City. Compared to those locations, the food is not as good. The menu seems limited compared to the other places as well. Restaurant is decently sized, but there is still a wait during the weekends. The service not bad, but they seem a bit understaffed. I have been there several times, but have never been impressed. TL;DR: Food just ok, not worth a line. Service sub optimal. Quite hot inside - need more fans or air. Would only go back for the bbq pork buns. Here is what we've got and highly recommend: We ordered: -baked BBQ pork buns -steamed rice roll with shrimp and Chinese chives -har gow -siu mai -lava custard sesame ball I liked how the pictures correlated with the paper for you to write down what dishes you want to order! I felt like everything came out in a very timely manner. To be honest, we probably ordered a little too much just for 2 people, because we were very stuffed and barely able to finish at the end. We enjoyed everything! The baked BBQ pork buns are very unique because I've never had them at any other dim sum place before. The menu had pictures of every single item which was neat. You order by marking down which item you want on a piece of paper they give you that aligns with the menu. I can't express my disappointment enough... Tim Ho Wan is a legendary brand that most asians have heard of. Michelin level dim sum? And they're coming to Houston?? It should definitely push the Htown asian food scene closer to LA or NYC level. You could tell each pieces of dim sum were smaller than normal. The skin on the ha gow and rice rolls aren't as delicate. Flavors barely hold up to your average Houston dim sum restaurants. What bothered me the most was the chicken feet dish that was cooked completely different than the one you typically get at any dim sum joint. And lets not mention the questionable prices. The dim sum at this Tim Ho Wan came nothing close to the Tim Ho Wan I tried in HK. However, we came to realized that this restaurant was understaffed and I'm aware that it's something that is unavoidable, it would've been nice if they gave us a heads up (we were only told that the restaurant was understaffed when we inquired about the dishes being warm-to-cold). Besides the long wait time, the food was alright. It suited my mother's palate, but I feel as though there dishes were too salty due to the temperature being cold. We came here for dinner with my brother, niece, nephew and a few of his little friends for his 12th birthday. It was pretty busy when we arrived but we were seated and served our drink orders right away. It was 7 of us so my brother took the liberty of ordering a bunch of yummy dimsum for the table. The food came out rather quickly and we went to work. We had quite a few dumplings, shrimp and pork dumpling, bbq pork buns, braised beef noodle soup, a leafy vegetable dish, and fried rice amongst other amazing dishes. The food was excellent. Tried using the Yelp waitlist before leaving the house but wasn't available. Place is upscale from other dim sum restaurants we have been to. They have a double dragon decor right when you come in. We took some selfies... hehehe We were provided placemat menus with pictures and an order form. It make things easy for those who are not familiar what to order. They cook the items when ordered which is nice that food will be fresh from the kitchen. Food selection is not as extensive but have the essentials. We start with the the pork & century egg congee. It was a bit small. Tasted ok. We tried the spicy cucumber as appetizer. It was delicious! We would order it again. Next was their famous Pork bbq bun. They have a sweet crust and pork bbq inside was amazing! Definitely highlight of the meal. We ordered the Chinese broccoli with garlic. It is different to others that they toss the oyster/soy sauce with the broccoli then added fried garlic on top. This is my preference as the oyster sauce usually is not evenly distributed. We ordered shiu mai and pork & chives dumplings and were decent. Things came out pretty quick. We ordered and finished everything around 30 minutes. We wanted to order chow mien with pork bbq for second round. This is where things went downhill. Apparently, they do not account for people to order a second round of food. We ordered the chow mien and waited for 30 minutes and still did not get it. We end up canceling as we spent twice the amount of time there and half of the time waiting for a dish we never got. We were told that we should have ordered everything at once otherwise, we will be at the end of the queue. Hopefully, management reads this and figure out what they need to do. Overall, we would come back again as food was one of the better dim-sums. Knowing what we know, we will skip ordering a second round. This is more like 3.5 stars mainly brought down by experience in our last order. If we knew that was how it works (nobody told us), we would have just paid the bill and left after our first order. read more

Alas the famous Michelin star dim sum restaurant from HK makes its debut in Houston a few years ago and the hype was real! I waited until that hyped died down a bit to finally give Tim Ho Wan a try! We actually came on a Saturday night for dinner and it was surprisingly not busy at all! We had just gone shopping and didn't want our cars broken into so had a few shopping bags with us. We asked for a booth cause 1. We had plenty of stuff with us and 2. We usually end up ordering too much for a normal sized table for 2. Welp, the hostess refused to give us one even though they had one open, there was nobody else waiting to be seated and it was literally their last seating of the night before closed. The F?! They said it was company policy.. okay.. welp guess what? We ended up ordering more than the table could hold and they had to pull up another table anyways. Smh! I understand how some people could come and take space from potential business but in this circumstance, I think the restaurant could be a bit more flexible considering the situation, the time, etc. The food itself wasn't all that bad.. I actually liked the pan fried rice rolls in XO sauce. We enjoyed the extra garlicky strong beans as well. The turnip cake, bbq pork buns, spicy cucumbers, etc were all decent. I didn't hate anything but wasn't impressed per se either.. mediocre dim sum with some items that I would get again. I wouldn't mind stopping by again if I happened to be on Katy and craving dim sum, though I wouldn't go out of my way if I wasn't already in the area cause there are definitely better places in Houston. Our family went here for dinner last night. We were originally intending to go to another restaurant next door but the wait was too long and this place seemed to have open tables. The food was actually pretty good. My biggest complaint about the restaurant is that the menu is pretty limited. The idiom "Chinese menu" certainly does not apply here. We had the following: Baked BBQ Pork Buns - 4/5 - Very traditional. The buns themselves were cooked well and the pork filling was flavorful, both savory as a touch of sweet. Deep Fried Dumplings with Pork and Dried Shrimp - 2/5 - This was a miss. The filling was okay (pork and shrimp is a pretty typical dumpling filling) but the dumplings were not well fried; they were greasy and doughy at the same time. Steamed Dumplings with Pork and Chive - 4/5 - Good proportions of the pork and chive. Well cooked and the translucent dumpling skins make this dish look very appetizing. Steamed Pork Spare Ribs in Black Bean Sauce - 4/5 - This is typically one of our favorite dishes to have at dim sum, and while this was not the best ever, it was good and held its own versus others. Wontons in Spicy Sauce - 4/5 - The sauce was very good. Not overpowering with a bit of spice (not that much). The wontons themselves were just okay. Braised Beef Noodle Soup - 3/5 - Very average. The flavor of the soup was not as deep or herbal as the better ones I've had elsewhere. Wonton Noodle Soup - 3/5 - Very average as well. The broth was actually good. The wontons were okay and the overall presentation was very plain (some wontons, noodles a few pieces of Chinese bok choy, that's it).
