Chicken Gumbo Sandwich: a very filling sandwich consisting of a toasted ciabatta bun filled to overflowing with a gumbo of chicken and chopped sausage amongst lots of veggies and creamy sauce. Or something like that. And fried pickles. It was very tasty but a little messy and required a fork for the drippings. Lots of creative and diverse sandwiches. Packed in a brown bag. No hamburgers. Plan your choice ahead and call it in for pick up. Very small interior. Just take out - but there is a cute area with bistro tables, inside and out. Lucky to find this place while stopping in Placerville! Unique and wildly creative sandwich menu made it hard to settle on our choices. We went with Chicken Satay (a customer favorite) and Fried Bologna. Both were outstanding, but the Bologna stole the show! Rich with melted cheese, walnuts and green olives. Read about this place in am SF article and was shocked considering I was born & raised in Tahoe to have never heard of it, especially being such a sandwich fan. In the last couple months I have now been there 5 times, the first two were amazing. The Crunchy Grilled 4 Cheez is out of this world (although will get soggy fast so do not order if you are going to eat it much later). The tacos had great shredded white meat chicken. The next time I tried a rotating specialty and was stoked. Then it all went down hill. Tried the Kung Pao Hotlinks, mediocre is an understatement-very salty, filled with a bland mayo, no spice and very little sausage. I wanted to give them another chance on this sandwich so when I was down there the following week, ordered it to go and asked for it extra spicy. They seemed bamboozoled then figured out they put the wrong sausage on my previous sandwich, hence the lack of spice. Not only did they admit it but said they wanted to make it right this time (not in terms of offering me a free make-up sandwich or something else, just that they would get it right). Welp, disappointed again. Full of a bland mayo, just a few slices of sausage definitely not worth the price. Well I decided to give them one more chance since I love my sandos, they are somewhat local and people have bad days. I ordered the MidWest Pizza Lovers with no ham and one taco with both red and green sauce. Waited over a half hour (which is normal for her no matter how busy they are), when the person at the counter handed me the bag she doubled checked with the chef that there was no ham, his response "no there isn't we have been out for a while". I made a joke being thankful I didn't want it, so did not matter she did not know that they were out. Well that was not the only thing they were out of and apparently they do not let the front person taking orders know nor the public they just take your money. I got home only to find that my sandwich was missing half the ingredients and the taco all sauce! Also, when I was waiting for my sandwich I saw the person cooking also eating with the other hand over the grill. When I first came to this establishment I thought it was fun that they had a rotating sandwhich board with one cook, very personal. I was so wrong. The fact that they only have one cook (who also will cross contaminate and eat while cooking, giving no antiseptic value at all) creates a VERY slow experience no matter how busy they are, yet they do not care about urgency nor cleanliness and have no problem telling you that. The infamous sandwich board that is supposed to constantly change hasn't in weeks, probably due to laziness and/or lack of caring. The prices are CRAZY HIGH and they can't even get basic orders correct. Sandwiches should be no more than $12.99, if you do not have the ingredients to make the sandwich -tell people (don't just make it without, this also happened to another couple while there and I heard the cook keep saying oh well we are out, but it was never crossed over the menu board), add another cook, practice sanitary practices, care more about your customers (just because you became successful over one article doesn't mean you shouldn't hold yourselves accountable especially in such a small community) and most of all make a reputable sandwich again! Cliff Notes: Unfortunate downfall of what could have been great, if you have an extra $20 to spend on one sandwich and can risk it going wrong/poorly-do it! read more

After reading a co-workers review of Timmy's Brown Bag, my family decided to try it out as we were passing through on the way to Lake Tahoe. Finding parking in downtown Placerville is hit or Miss so I suggest 1 pass down the street (park anywhere) and then I go to the parking garage. I have tried calling in an order, but if they're busy they won't answer the phone. The shop is visible from the sidewalk but the entrance is just inside the courtyard of shops. There is no seating inside but you can use any of the tables in the courtyard to enjoy your food. Upon looking through the reviews we decided to get the Bahn-mi sandwich and OMG it is out of this world! This sandwich is on my list of top 5 sandwiches I've ever. The sausage is tasty and the texture of the wasabi peas and carrots make each bite a pleasure The jalapeño sauce and aioli ensure that each bite is moist and flavorful. WOW We have tried other sandwiches that were recommended and they were all very good: Swedish Meatball, Chicken Marsala, Peperoncini Pepperoni Pesto, and Chicken Satay to name a few. Our family likes to order the Bahn mi and then try another sandwich from the ever changing menu. I am lucky to live within driving distance of this amazing liberal hole in the wall sandwich shop. No second date. The sandwiches my group shared were fine, which is to say really nice, cute. They were very averageish. Not good enough to go out of my way to try again, and I live close by. It was the fries. Oh, man, they were so wrong. I actually could not believe the cook, who is said to be trained, could serve them. The "flavored" ones were suffocated in a dry rub/spice mix. Without the mayo sauce available, they were inedible. And with the mayo, I had to ask why I was eating them when they were inedible without thick mayo sauce. I have a simple philosophy when it comes to restaurants. If they'll serve one atrocious dish, they don't know what they're doing. Quality and unique and ingredients. Oh lord these sandwich's are so good. It's a little hole in the wall, so unless you are looking for it you might not stumble on it. All the sandwiches are so unique, and I vibe with that. We got the chicken satay sandwich, the cheeseburger pot sticker sandwich, and the grilled cheese tomato soup sandwich. All were so complex and tasty. I consider myself a foodie and am familiar with many cuisines from all around the world, but even I couldn't make out some of the ingredients listed on the sandwich menu at Timmy's Brown Bag, a takeout counter in downtown Placerville! My pick was the smoked oyster sandwich, which came with crispy pepper bacon, asazuke cucumbers, greens, and Thai mignonette (shallot/pepper/vinegar sauce), all on two slices of grilled, buttered brioche! This was such a unique sandwich, and it came with a generous amount of the smokey, umami, grainy oysters--such deliciousness! Next, I had the Chicken Satay Ayam sandwich, which consisted of shredded chicken satay (Indonesian chicken skewers grilled with a spice powder seasoning), along with harissa cucumber slaw, sweet chili sauce, peanut butter chili sauce, and masala borugulu (spiced puffed rice). How can I even begin to describe this sandwich? The shredded chicken was perfectly spiced/seasoned and was nicely caramelized from the grill. The meat was slightly dry but was complemented perfectly by the refreshing slaw and the chili sauce, but the most interesting part was the puffed rice, which added a crispy texture to every bite! There were so many more selections on the menu I would've loved to try, from Indian to Korean to Vietnamese to Caribbean to French flavors, but alas.. whoever is coming up with these sandwich combinations is a culinary mastermind! read more

1st meal of the 5 day road trip. This place is tucked a bit off the street and is just a take-out kiosk with some outdoor seating. As others have mentioned - the menu is VERY difficult to read, but I suppose that matches with the sandwich combinations that are very unusual. We opted for the chicken sate and peanut butter one (though I think menu changes all the time). We also got a side order of Tater tots (which was FAR too large a portion or tots). Wasn't sure I'd get there before they close at 3 pm, due to heavy traffic and a car going off the road. Made it and the car looked ok, as EMS was en route. Back to the sandwich. Tried the crab Rangoon on their recommendation. Tons of fake crab! Spicy, creamy, sweet, salty-- all the flavor combos I love. Loved the spicy relish with it. These guys must have been on something fun to make up sandwich creations like this! So fun! $13 for a sandwich ($14 w/ our CA tax). A little on the high side, but definitely quality ingredients and worth it. Huge sandwich. Definitely splittable or two meals worth. Unless you stuff yourself, because it's so good! Check. Stopped here on a long drive due to the great Yelp review. This place is right on the main street in Placerville. It's a cute little town with a lot of shops to look into. There was a little parking lot within the block that we were able to park at for free. This place is very small ans is in a little covered walkway to a few different shops/restaurants. You either need to take it to go or eat at a little table in the covered patio area. We sat near the back where there was a pretty little creek below. The food took awhile to get but made fresh. The menu is full of crazy sandwiches and off the menu they said they also have a burger and tacos. My husband picked the ranchero shrimp sandwich and I had the satay chicken sandwich. My husband said his was delicious. Mine was really good but I wish they had toasted the bread more because it was toasted just enough to taste like dried out bread more than toasted bread but the sandwich was still very good. It had shredded yummy chicken and there was a spread of peanut butter on it. I thought it might be too much but it was very subtle with the yummy crunch from it being crunchy peanut butter. There was also slaw on there. We would definitely return and share this place with others in the vicinity. I do hope they take note of the bun and crisp them up a bit more. read more

God this place is so good. Believe the hype because it is real. While the flavor combinations sound crazy, and something you might imagine a 20-year-old stoner would come up with, that isn't the case at all. The flavor combinations and textures are exceptionally well thought out with some element of crunch, fat, salt, spice, and sweetness in just about every bite. The restaurant is exceptional, and arguably the best sandwich shop I have ever been to. Take your time going over the menu, and ask the staff about their recommendations because they know what's up. FYI: Parking is on the street and usually difficult to find, and the restaurant is tucked away so look for the sign on the sidewalk. Don't be turned off by the menu, because it can seem a little overwhelming. Seating is mostly outdoors with only a couple of bar stools inside the restaurant. 5 stars for everything. Ingredients being out of stock happens but when that isn't communicated you end up receiving something you didn't order. Had I known that they were out of three main ingredients in the Thanksgiving sandwich I would have gone for one of the other options. The 5-stars are not hype. Timmy's is a must-stop for anyone living in or passing through Placerville, or for anyone who just likes sandwiches. I'm thankful I stopped in here on a whim when on my way to Apple Hill. What really sets them apart is the love and creativity they have put into their sandwiches. These are not creations you'll find anywhere else. I don't think another shop on the planet features the Jalapeño bacon blue cheese meatball and swiss melt, the pepperoncini pepperoni and pesto melt or a yakisoba spam and muenster pan sandwich. I personally went with a curry chicken concoction that was melt in my mouth delicious, from the bread to the meat to the fresh veggie ingredients. It's hidden, too, which I like. I almost missed the place. It's a tiny spot set back from the main street. Inside their is a creative menu display, a little bar to sit at and that's it. It gives you an opportunity to chat with the friendly staff and get away from the crowds on the main street. read more

Tucked away in one of the shopping areas off Placerville's Main St. is this fabulous little gem. A simple oval sign sits right outside the teal front door and main window for Timmy's Brown Bag; a simple sandwich counter that serves beyond-creative sandwich combinations and now burgers, wings, and tacos around dinner time. Inside is a tight space where an approximately six-person counter divides the kitchen that makes up the left side with seating on the right. The decor is as busy as the sandwich combos with jumbled Christmas lights dangling along the window, abstract prints hang above, extra ingredients sit in shelves that are assembled and placed in the odd corner, and a sole flatscreen hangs on the far wall and above the prep area. Only three employees seem to fit behind the kitchen with one that preps, deep-fries, and assembles the sandwiches; one that attends the grill; and then Timmy himself who bops between attending the kitchen and conversing with customers. Above their heads hang the individually printed 20+ sandwiches, each with their ingredients listed out in varying artwork styles. Like the Spam and Kimchi. The sandwich has grilled pineapple, chunky chili sauce, peanut butter, kewpie mayo, grilled spam, and a plethora of other ingredients that get lost among the pineapple and repeating-spam-can graphic that is the menu. But luckily there are printed out versions of the menu that better list the items. I grab a chair and a sheet of white wax sandwich paper is placed above the rounded cutting board that serves as the dining platter. With a printed menu in-hand it was now time to thin down the options of what I wanted to order. After a good bit of decision making, I decided to get two sandwiches to split then and later. The bahn mi with cantonese sausage and the honey prawn sandwich. The first to be done and presented was the shrimp sandwich. On thin slices of lightly toasted Texas toast came a pile of popcorn and non-fried bay shrimp, lettuce, shrimp crackers, honey aioli, and candied walnuts. This tall tower of shrimp goodness had a ton of crunch due to the toast, friend shrimp, lettuce, walnuts, and the crackers. So...everything is contributing towards that. Just an audible array of crunches with a few plops from the strays that jump from the sandwich confines. Taste-wise it was full of sweet shrimp flavor that is made sweeter by the honey and candied walnuts with a bit of buttery notes from the bread. After managing to get half of the honey prawn "neatly" down, the sandwich I was most excited for came next. On a round, fluffy brioche bun came a colorful stack of yellow pickled daikon, deep red slices of round Cantonese sausage, green crunchy wasabi peas and jalapeños, and a vibrant slaw of cabbage and carrots with sweet chili and pork floss. This was the sandwich I first had two years ago on my first visit and I'm happy that it tastes just as great. A primarily sweet version of the bahn mi thanks to the specific sausages used. Those little Cantonese suckers remind me of peking pork, just sweeter. The daikon provides a nice funky sharp kick to keep the whole thing from being just a sandwich of sweet and the crunchy peas offered a nice spice bite. The slaw keeps everything cool despite the use of sweet chili and presence of the jalapeños. It's a great take on the traditional bahn mi you can get everywhere else. Overall, stellar sandwiches residing in a quant space. Staff are beyond kind and make for entertaining conversation if nothing interesting is on the television. Even if you can't score a seat indoors, just get your order to-go and sit in one of the nearby outdoor seating areas. These are works of art that are as delicious as they are unique to the place itself. Bacon and pierogi, samosa chaat, yakisoba spam, or a green apple dessert sando are just a few of the delicious options that await you in this truly fabulous place. A fabulous five from me! read more

This is a NOT mainstream, NOT typical, NOT ordinary sandwich shop. Please don't leave a one star review that says they didn't follow the recipe you found on the Internet. That being said, if you want a quirky, delicious amazing sandwich, this is the place. The fried bologna is my go to, also love the smoked oyster. But if I see something weird on the menu that day, I'm in, it's always delicious! It is a walk up window, so the service is what you would expect. Each sandwich is handmade, so they are not fast. My group ended up ordering the smoked oyster sandwich, potsticker cheeseburger, honey walnut shrimp sandwich, and one more sandwich that I can't remember the name of (I believe it had chicken in it).
