What was ordered are the following and I have to apologize for the photos, we ended up devouring the food and totally forgot to that before photos. DINAKDAKAN - the charbroiled taste of the pork is nicely flavored with the seasoning and ingredients. Perfect spice added sealed the deal for me CRISPY PALABOK - Amazing! BANGUS SISIG - perfectly balanced in flavor. You won't have anything to take home since you can't get enough of the flavor. CHICHARON BULAKLAK - we all know you can't mess this up but believe it or not other places managed to do so, but not TIMOG! You'll end up ordering a beer or two with it. Make sure you're not driving! lol PARES NI ENTENG - Ok, this has to be my favorite one amongst all of the above. Meat is beautifully prepared and seasoned. They don't skimp on the type of meat they use. They have massive amount of beef tendons with it too that melts in your mouth. Order it and thank me later. HALO HALO CLASSIC - don't be fooled by the name classic. It's a special mixture of our favorite halo halo. Ingredients are fresh and never frozen. They prepare it once you order it and it's not readily available in the fridge like other places. I was never a fan of beans in my halo halo and requested not to have any on mine. Request granted! Prang genie lang sila. Hahahaha Oh and also it's HUGEEEEE! Don't be greedy and bring a friend or two to share this amazing hunk a cup! Its size is bigger than my face. To end this review, I must say that service is beyond amazing. They sure are very personable in this joint. They give you their honest opinion about the dishes they have. The owner and chef is very down to earth and so is the whole staff. I will definitely come back to try the rest of the dishes that ran out since we came after 7pm. Timog is a cool spot for dinner. The ambiance is nice, but if you show up one day during lunch or dinner time and there's already 2-3 other groups seated, prepare yourself to wait. My fiance and I have been going here at least once a month since they opened as we love supporting small businesses. We typically only order the crispy palabok and the Shanghai lumpia with maybe one other dish to try as majority of the other dishes are alright. We always show up for dinner right at 5pm when they open to guarantee service. What I mean is there's only one server. There has only been one server for as long as I can remember. Super cool kid and great composure, but when he's busy taking orders, running the food out, or even making their ginormous halo halo to order, you'll be waiting for awhile. When this happens, we're patient with him. We know it's not his fault, but it's surprising how Timog has not hired another server for support. Another issue we've had in the past was we showed up at 7:20pm for a late dinner one night. Timog is opened until 8pm, but we were turned away immediately and informed by who we think is the owner that the kitchen closes at 7:30pm, therefore, they could not seat/serve us. Cute little restaurant, it reminds me of the ones in the mall in Philippines. Loved the decorations. It is really cramped in there. Tables are squished together. So hopefully you don't mind being up close and personal with strangers around you. Not enough room for wheelchairs to move around. And only 1 restroom for the whole restaurant. It was packed when we went. We asked to sit at the bar so we didn't have to wait for a table plus didn't want to be so close to people. Just keep in mind the bar top is super high but at least you don't have to bend down to eat! Lol I took a little bit of everything...longonisa, tocino, egg, garlic fried rice, caldereta, bicol express, chicken adobo, and pancit. Tocino was a little dry but still flavorful. I seen their offerings on Instagram and decided to come here with my parents for an early dinner. I was really curious about their crispy palabok and it did not disappoint. We tried the baby squid appetizer, the grilled pork belly, the chicken inasal, and their turon with ice cream. I was quite let down by the chicken inasal though, to be honest. I was hoping it was a half chicken and not quartered. You couldn't taste any citrus notes and it was bland. The grilled pork belly did not have any sear marks and lacked color. If I were to come back here, I'd try something else on the menu. However, the crispy palabok is where its at! We went for the brunch buffet and did not have to wait for a table. It was a little bit crowded getting to and from the buffet line. The lechon, kare kare, and ube ginataan we're good! I don't know if the kare kare was only vegetables because that was what was left and I forgot to check for meat the next round. The sinigang was also good. I wish they had lumpia. and dinuguan. The lunch buffet was $30/pp and featured: Pork Belly Sinagang Lechon & Lechon Sauce Pancit Bihon Lumpia & Sweet Chili Sauce Kare Kare & Baggoon Adobo Chicken BBQ Pinakbet Tocino (You need to request Vinegar) Longonisa (You need to request Vinegar) White Rice Garlic Rice and for dessert Ube Ginatan All the dishes were comparable to other Filipino restaurants with no dish really standing out to me. The food looked good, and they restocked quickly when items got low. Since we were there early (around 11:30 am), the food tasted fresh and the variety accessible for those new to Filipino cuisine. I was pleasantly surprised that the customers in the restaurant at the same time as us were courteous and did not pick off just the lechon skin like I've seen done at other Filipino buffets. Went here on a Tuesday morning with the impression that they had the buffet (as seen on their TikTok page), to find that it's still a "soft opening" and that they no longer offer the buffet during the week - it would only be during the weekend for a few hours. As a foodie and a Filipino I still decided to give it a try. The business is located inside the Lion Market Shopping Center (from the main doors walk all the way down and before you get to the grocery store, the restaurant is located on the right side. As we walked in the business is slow, probably only 2 other parties dining at the time we come in - and they pay for their tabs just prior to us ordering. I think the main downside to the new business was the service was extremely slow. The dishes came out roughly 10-15 minutes after we ordered even though we were the only ones left in the restaurant. We could hear staff chatting in the kitchen as we sat their trying to get someone's attention since we still had not gotten our canned sodas that we ordered. Once the food came out we were unsatisfied on how the sisig was presented. The cast iron skillet was not hot at all and the sisig was not sizzling. I was able to touch the skillet with my finger and not get burned. The ginataang kalabasa was just your average entree, nothing outstanding. The pancit was large in portion, it had some lechon pieces on top which were good, but overall taste wise was a bit bland. And at this point all our food had arrived but still we were waiting on our drinks. The food and price point are on two different scales as compare to some of the local turo turo spots or chain restaurants such as Isla which is located just on the other side of Auto-Mall. Visited today with my coworkers for lunch! We ordered Bistek plate, Sisilog, and Pares plate. We really enjoyed the first two dishes, however the Pares took so long to arrive that two of us have already finished our plates, but one of us haven't received their order of pares yet. While this usually would've made me rate three, they handled the situation very well and offered to just take it out of the check and wrap the order to go. She already has my credit card and instead of finishing the transaction she went back and forth trying to assist them . I was really confused and concerned about my card. It's easier to find the restaurant if you go inside the Lyon Market building, make a right and the resto is right next to Lyon Market. Having their buffet spread made me feel like I was at a Filipino family party and not a restaurant. Place had a relaxing vibe. Decor was simple elegance and welcoming. Very good quality food which is rarely found in a buffets. Fresh food even at 2pm. Went on a Sunday and they had 9 dishes all together not including the 2 desserts. Lechon had crispy skin with tender meat that had a slightly smoky flavor. It's a pork belly Lechon. It's better than some whole Lechons I've had before. Paksiw na Lechon is a rare find in buffets but they have it. It's basically Lechon meat braised in garlic vinegar and the sweet brown dipping sauce. It was yummy. The longanisa (sweet Filipino sausage) was good quality without too much fat but was still juicy. Garlic rice and fried eggs that usually accompany the longanisa was also available in the buffet. The Sinigang which is meat boiled in sour soup was comparble to homemade. The warm sour broth was refreshing after having all the other rich dishes. They did not skimp on the ingredients on the Sinigang. The fried fish had a well seasoned batter. It was moist and the thin batter was crispy. Simple but Yummy. The pancit (noodles) was also good and had plenty of ingredients, even had shrimp in it. Biko, which is the sweet sticky rice with toasted coconut topping had good balance of sweetness and coconut flavor. Was too full to try the other dessert. Reasonably priced at $29 for the quality of the food especially with the AYCE Lechon and Paksiw na Lechon as part of the buffet. Staff were very nice, friendly and welcoming. Very clean place. Will try to return during dinner time when they have acoustics nights. They just need a sign outside of the building to direct people because it's not clear from the outside that the restaurant entrance is inside the building which is not visible from the outside. I've been craving authentic Filipino food, and I'm so glad I stumbled upon this gem in Newark! I also can't get enough of their Crispy Palabok. The l crispy noodles on top of that smooth, garlicky smoked sauce brings back all the comforting flavors of home. The noodles were cooked to perfection, and I could tell everything was made with care. I REALLY wanted to like this place. The decor was nice, loved the Rizal Park mural on the wall and the hanging trellis. The service was good and Malaya was very attentive to us. We ordered the Shanghai Lumpia, Pork Sisig, Diniguan, Veggie Kare Kare. lumpia - was good, pork was moist, shell was crispy. Nothing bad to say. Pork Sisig - So the menu says, "grilled finely chopped pig's mask, ears and pork meat". I tasted no jowl. When you use pork jowl, you can tell - there's a distinct taste and scent, I experience neither. It wasn't bad, but it didn't move me. There was a pepper on the dish, but it didn't taste like it was actually cooked with it. Also, the pan they brought it out on was not sizzling but warmed so nothing got charred or crispy. Thought maybe they are more vinegar/citrus forward as I've had it like that when visiting family in Tarlac. Yet, as I was leaving I see them bring out a pan of Sisig to another customer and the pan was sizzling. Where's the consistency - an egg would be nice to have on it too. Kare Kare - not bad, but the Kare Kare sauce split. Maybe because there wasn't enough peanut butter? The Kare flavor was on the weaker side. Veggies in it were cooked nicely though, just wish it had more flavor. Diniguan - Also cooked well, pork was juicy, not dry, but again, sauce was lacking something. There just wasn't enough depth of flavor. A pepper or dash of white pepper would've done wonders. It wasn't like we hated our meal, but everything fell just a little bit short. I stopped by for lunch and was greeted with a warm welcome. The ambiance of the restaurant has a very big bright energy. I ordered their fried tofu and Bicol express. Both were so good! Definitely my kind of cooking :) It's nice to have another Filipino restaurant in the area because I like supporting small local restaurants like this. Price range is reasonable for the fresh ingredients and deep flavors. I always have something to say about Filipino dishes but I think this one met my expectation during my first visit. My husband and I went to Timog for the first time for lunch today at around 11:50am. We were the only customers there at the time. First impression as we entered the restaurant was how clean and nicely decorated it was. Walls had paintings, more like sketches to me, of famous parts of the Philippines. I think the sketches were of Quiapo, Manila, and it looked like the University of Santo Tomas to me. I graduated at UST in the early 80s. We were seated by a lovely, friendly young lady who also took our order of dinuguan, beef caldereta, steamed rice, sago gulaman, and melon fresca. We enjoyed the food and drinks which were delicious. Some of the best Filipino food we've had in a while. My husband normally asks for patis (fish sauce) to enhance the entree flavors but he didn't this time. He said the food was perfectly seasoned for him, same with me. Portions were large and we brought them home for dinner.
