This was one of my favorite spots when visiting Chicago but this last time did me in. The security/bouncer is a racist. I have visited this place on multiple occasions and never been asked for an ID. So as we waited to be checked in I notice the people in front of me pulling out there ids so I asked are y'all checking Id's the bouncer responded with a very condescending attitude "didn't you see the people before you señorita?" I asked him not to talk to me like that and he then wanted to take a stand of power. So I showed him my id and he again wanted to show his authority and asked are we going to have trouble señorita? This place is good. To my eyes, it's a professional-grade basement dive bar with a killer menu and a knockout beer list. It has all the trappings i'm looking for when I want to kick back after a hard day. The menu is extensive, the beers are many, the games are on, and the place is usually packed. It's not the place i'd take anyone for an intimate date or a business meeting, but it's definitely the spot i'd go to hang with some friends or kick it after a long day. There's something for everyone on their really impressive beer menu, and the food menu isn't hurting in the options department either. I got a burger and some beers and was in no way disappointed. I was in town for business and looking for a good bar to decompress at while I did some reading (that's just what I do, ok? I read at bars). This place hit the spot. As far as seating goes, there is a huge wraparound island bar with a ton of seats and a million taps. All over the place there are regular tables and chairs as well. Good place to eat if you're in the Chicago area. It was close by our hotel so we decided to pop over for a drink and a quick dinner. We got fish tacos and the wing basket. Both were really good. Wings were solid (not the best thing we have ever had) but solid if you didn't know what to order. Fish tacos were amazing. The sides were just meh. I would get fries with them if I could. Service was quick and the bartenders were very nice. We chatted with one who was bald with some facial hair (didn't catch his name)! Nice guy and easy convo. Ambiance was what you'd expect at any other pub. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because it didn't WOW me for a place outside of my hometown. Been coming here for years and primarily Saturday night drinks or sports games. Only had food here twice, but definitely recommend coming here for the drinks and not so much the food. Took my boss here, who's lived in several counties in Europe and is a huge hockey fan. We split two kinds of wings, buffalo egg rolls and he got a salad. Salad looked great, but our wings were small and nothing special and really just left us feeling, well, sticky. A "pound" bone-in was six teeny tiny wings and cost 17$! Bizarre! They have an EXTENSIVE happy hour menu full of food and drinks. Do yourself a favor and go ahead and order the soft pretzel bites. They're to die for with the mustard options and IPA cheese sauce! They have a special drink called holy water which is a "mixture of lots of alcohol and lots of juice" that'll sweep you under the table if you aren't careful. I'm visiting Chicago from out of town, and was so excited to experience Timothy's since seeing it on Man V Food. Little did I know I was in for the worst dining experience I've ever had across all 50 states. After being seated we were not even greeted by our waitress for 20+ minutes. After asking for our waitress (Emily) multiple times she finally came to our table and did not even give us a simple greeting. I understand people have bad days, and I have experience in the food industry. I can whole heartedly say Emily was the WORST server I have ever had. We did not receive utensils, plates, or napkins either. We sat there for 90 minutes total, and she checked on us once. Of course we were also missing an entree when the food finally came a week after ordering it. Did she return with our missing entree? Of course not. We had to resort to speaking to the manager, and of course nothing was done to improve our experience. Emily, if you are reading this, please get a new job so tourists don't have to have their Chicago experience completely ruined by your attitude. I have been coming to Timothy O'Tooles for the past four years and have always loved it. While sometimes the food isn't always consistent it's such a great place to hang out and watch any games you want. There's always a good crowd no matter when you go and the bartenders are fun and friendly. There's also a ton of staff so even when it gets busy you can always find someone to help you or grab you another drink. This most recent time I went to watch the cubs game and while the game didn't go the way I wanted my experience was great. I never knew they had lunch specials having only ever gone for happy hour or dinner so was pleasantly surprised to see them. I opted for the half turkey club with a cup of chili and a side salad. It was delicious! The food came quickly and was fresh and very nicely plated. I've previously eaten their buffalo wrap, pretzel appetizer and I believe wings and all of them were good as well. So happy we just moved down the street from this establishment and will definitely be regulars! read more

This is a great bar i frequently visited when i was in Chicago. This bar was located right down the block from my hotel and was a great sports bar to watch Chicago bulls games. The staff and bar tenders were awesome. I asked one of the bartenders if they were any great strip clubs in the area and my man pulled out strip club cards with his name on them. Lol i never seen something like that in my life. The food was awesome and the wait staff was amazing. I order a bacon cheese burger with some buffalo wings and the food was money. The beer selection on tap was great as well. Chicago has a lot of great beer selections on tap that we don't have in new York and i was very excited to try mew beers I'm not accustomed to. The atmosphere was very chill and everyone including the security guard were awesome. I really enjoyed myself and this is definitely a sports bar i will re visit on my come back to Chicago. All around bad experience. My friend was getting engaged and booked a space at the bar for $150. When we got their we were told we didn't have a reservation. Turns out they started giving away our room we reserved. To make up for it they opened up their private bar space for us. But the bar space did not serve food even though we booked the area for lunch. A member of our party who did not book the room asked if they were still going to charge us for their mistake. They said no and in return opened up the private space to the public. After treating us terribly the entire time, I asked the manager, Keith, if he understood why people were upset. He said yes but him making up for giving away our initial eating space was giving us the spare drinking room for the full price of our initial reservation for a eating and drinking space. He felt it was generous enough to allow us to drink at his bar. I cannot recommend a different bar more. Do not book an event with this bar. read more

I've been here a few times now to eat and drink, they also recently had a dogfish head tap takeover which was cool and i got to try some cool beers. It's a bit expensive yea, but that's the area. They have a very impressive beer list. As for food I had the bread pudding, which was very good, and the goat cheese app which was fine. This was the second time I've been to O'Toole's in a bigger group, and we all love the food and the drinks--especially as they have a 20% discount for Northwestern staff on Wednesday. The boneless wings are especially delicious, as is their Moscow Mule. I'd skip the whipped feta special (a little weird, though it is interesting), and while the artichoke dip is delicious, the portion size is a little small. Cocktails are delicious--blueberry anything, etc. Problem came after we ate. We got one round of drinks and our entrees, and were hoping to get a second round, but the waiter just bought our check immediately without asking if we wanted anything else. Okay, no worries. But when we got our bill, we noticed that the 20% discount didn't seem to total to the right amount (total was 155 pre-tax, but the discount was 24 dollars, not about 30). We went up to a server to ask about the mix-up and were told that they'd find our server and send her to our table to fix it. Well, the manager came out instead--a man with very short hair (buzzcut?). Immediately, he was pretty impatient and a bit aggressive...he said, "It seems like you have a problem?" and I said that no, there wasn't a problem, but it didn't seem like the discount got tabulated correctly. He sharply responds that some things don't count in the discount--he doesn't say what doesn't count, but I don't want to ask as he is being pretty intimidating, so I say okay, thanks. When he walks away, it occurs to me that we're splitting the check later so to properly calculate each person's part, we need to know what doesn't count. So, I go and find him and ask what doesn't count, as we need to each pay our parts later. He seems exasperated and says I need to give him some time, and I let him know that it's no problem...then he comes back, and points out only one item on our receipt that wouldn't qualify, but that doesn't add up to the discrepancy of 6 dollars...it's not even a big deal to us, we just wanted to get the promotion properly and didn't know it was going to make the manager so upset. At that point, we just took matters into our own hands and started comparing our receipt to the prices on the menu to assume that it was probably the drink specials that don't count in the promotion. That's fine, but we just wish it wasn't SUCH a hassle to let us know that. We were never mean or pushy, but were treated like we were being horrendous patrons for double-checking. Either way, we still tipped a good amount and left. I visited Chicago on a business trip. Because I was in a hotel, I needed to order take out. Based on some online reviews, I decided to try Timothy O'Tools. I had my dinner delivered via Door Dash. While the food was delivered in a reasonable amount of time, it was also delivered without any utensils. I contacted the restaurant and complained only to be told "that's how we do things". Really? You expect people to eat soup, fish and coleslaw without ANY plastic wear? If they care so little about customers as to intentionally leave out essential things (like utensils), you may wish to choose another restaurant. read more

They took awhile to get to me, then did a really bad job explaining what, if anything, was on HH. I don't think I have ever been so upset with an establishment in my life. I come from over a decade spent in restaurants and genuinely never complain about anything. Well today my best friends got engaged and the future groom had called and reserved a Private room in advance. The manager explained to him that he could either pay to have a private room reserved for $150 dollars so we could get up and move around OR we could just reserve a table but we would all have to be seated. He opted to just pay the room fee so we could all be free to move around and celebrate. We get there and let them know we are there for a private event when the hosts automitically snap at us and tell us that they don't take names for reservations. We let them know that our friend talked to "Keith" and reserved a private room. At that point we are sitting waiting around to figure out what's going on when keith comes up to the host and starts talking to them about how we are really just a "glorified reservation" which is funny because even if we were just a reservation, there was nowhere to put us. He then came up to us and told us he "could see what he could do." As if he was doing us a favor? To see if there was somewhere to put 20 people who had reserved a room. Then he says he will put us in a back room with a pop up bar but there is no food allowed back there so we cannot order food. If we wanted to order food we would have to come out to the bar and eat there. What? It is 1:30 in the afternoon. The whole point was to celebrate and eat/drink. We were still very nice about it and went into this back room where employees were still clearing their jackets and drinks from. The bartenders were very nice but still I'm so confused as to how we are being treated like WE ARE THE INCONVENIENCE? One of the people in our party (who was not the one who reserved the room) goes up to the manager and says "so we really aren't still expected to pay the room fee at this point are we?" He responds with no, we will obviously accommodate you. A little bit later COMPLETE STRANGERS start to come back to our room/bar area and one of the women In our group goes "oh sorry. This is a private event" which is when the manager goes "oh this is no longer private since you aren't paying the room fee". It was genuinely the most unprofessional thing I have ever witnessed. If you were going to open up to the public then this should have been explained with the person who made the reservation? He may have still just paid the fee to keep his event with just his family and friends? You did not talk to him? When I went to discuss the with the manager because of how incredibly I'm upset I was for my friends, he said it was because the woman was "snippy" when she talked about the room fee. Well could you blame us!? We rented a room and we were met with rudeness the second we walked through the door. The manager then admitted that we were supposed to have a different room but the hosts accidentally sat other people in that room and he was accommodating us by giving us a bigger room. I have worked in restaurants for over a decade. I have worked almost every position, managed restaurants and have my degree in hospitality. I have never in my life complained to a manger. But this place is absolutely disgusting and should be ashamed of themselves. This was a very important day for us and we are so disappointed to have had to deal with such poor customer service. When my other friend went up to a higher up at the end to discuss everything, he was pretty much laughed at. This place is the most poorly managed place I have ever stepped foot in. I consistently go to O'tooles for drinks and good wings. Except the recently increased their wing pricing to 6 small wings for $16.. they said it would be a lb of wings, it was .75lb - again for $16. Obviously I am still very hungry since I'm writing this. Once O'tooles goes back to their old normal pricing of $14 for ten wings I'll happily take this down :).
