I arrived 20 min after i ordered and my food was ready however i waited for 15 min for anyone to even greet me or acknowledge me and there were 2 ladies standing at the register ringing 1 person up at a time. Let me start by saying the food is excellent, and some of the service depending on who you get is good. However I called to order takeout and was put on hold(30+minutes). I then proceeded to drive to the restaurant, by the time I got there it was 1 minute past closing, and I was told that they were closed. I could hear our conversation through my phone which was on speaker, and so could the cashier. The cashier proceeded to inform me that they were having phone problems as she hung the restaurant phone up. I politely left, however, furious inside... This is not a phone issue this is a work issue, a gross lack of customer service issue , a work ethic issue. Wish their service matched their food... And by the way I've seen them do this to another customer, I dismissed it at the time. I've been going to TJs Cafe for 7+ years now, frequently bringing others with me. I went because of the quality of food products used, the amount they gave you and the service. The last two times I went I was very disappointed. A week ago, I had a late lunch (about 2 p.m.) by myself, wasn't very busy at all. It took asking for my drink 3 times before getting it, letting her tend her other 2 tables of 2 patrons each, stand and visit in the service area, finally asked again after she brought my food and she went to get it. Came back for breakfast with a relative that had also come to like the cafe, but both were really disappointed. I realize that most places have had to raise prices because of the increases they are experiencing with our recent economy, but most have kept the same product/quality/amount of product provided. TJs is using a bacon much like the cheapest (maybe Always Save-type brand) rather than the thick farm-fresh type they use to serve and also gave at least probably a third less of sides like potatoes. With both scenerios considered, we both decided not to return. I had talked with another family member that has been going for many more years than me, she said she and 2 others had made that same decision for the same reasons almost a month ago. What a shame. I found this little gem in Grandview, when I was both living and working out that way. It's become a favorite of mine when I'm craving a greasy omelette with some hash browns. Tj's is a little hole in the wall diner, and when I say little, I mean LITTLE. It gets packed on Saturday mornings, and the parking situation there isn't the best. I usually end up parking across the street and walking over. The food is decent, but the best part about it is the fact that it's CHEAP, I think the last time hubby and I ate there we spent like 15 bucks for the both of our meals and were stuffed! They have decent coffee too. Wait staff can be good or bad depending upon who you get. Some of the ladies working there have been there for years and years, and know every customer by name almost, and make sure they are taken care of. They aren't the friendliest people I've ever met, but they keep my coffee mug full and get my food out fast. That's all I need, really. Driving by, you would never think anything of TJ's as it is a tiny little diner along Main Street in Grandview. But TJ's is one of those hidden gems in Kansas City. I've been coming here since I could walk and always have a great meal. Breakfast is TJ's is classic diner fare at an afforable price. Extremely large portions of biscuits and gravy, eggs, delicious bacon and everything else. Lunch and dinner are also strong points at TJ's. The daily specials are typically large portions at a very low price ($8 average). I usually go on tenderloin night and struggle to finish. TJ's one downside is their salads and their size. The salads are just from a bag. As for size, there are about 15 tables and a bar area, but with the popularity of this place it gets full quick. I usually try and go at off-times (11 for breakfast, 6:30-7 for dinner) after the older crowd has left. It is especially more enjoyable since smoking is no longer allowed inside (there used to be cloud's constantly). Next time you're in Grandview and want classic diner fare, head to TJ's! read more

Food here is typical greasy spoon with lots of fake butter sauce used in the hashbrowns and on the toast. I personally thought it was OK, but it is what it is. Tried the new TJ's today and was impressed. The new digs are really nice with way more room than the old diner on Main Street. The Food was really good and so was the service. There is a beautiful new pie case in the front with a nice variety of pies for sale. Looks like they are doing well judging by the size of the breakfast crowd. I wanted to give more stars, but one employee caused the reduction. I like the food. Just your usual hometown café. Now, the problem. We have had one certain waitress three times now. Every time, she lays the ticket down and never comes back. The last time we asked for another coke when she brought the food. 10 minutes later the other waitress came and helped us out. That is twice another waitress has waited our table for her. I just don't get it. The other waitresses we have had do an excellent job. I do not tip for this reason. Next time, I will figure out her section or just flat-out move if she comes to wait on us. Again, I wanted to give 5 stars but that one bad apple hurt the average. read more

i have been disappointed with the change in the chicken fried steak the last two times i have had breakfast from there since the reopening of the covid 19 event. once they opened again, i got a to go chicken fried steak breakfast and was shocked that it was no longer the home made nice and big piece of chicken fried steak they were known for. it was a small frozen patty. i went into the restaurant this time today. i told the waitress about what i experienced. her response was she was not aware of a change to it. so i told her i would try it once more. when the meal arrived it was the same small frozen patty i got in the to go order a few weeks back. i had her take it back and replaced it with bacon. so for those of us that would go there for the famous large home made chicken fried steak..... sorry guys..... it has been replaced with an frozen small patty. : ( read more

This place is simply amazing! Great service, great price, great food and they give you hand sanitizer at your table which I always love. They smoke their own brisket that they use in their bbq brisket sandwich. Their brisket is better than most BBQ restaurants that I tried and I have tried most of the places in town. Its smokey and delicious. Their patty melt is also one of the best I have had. Great curly fries and onion rings. I can't really say anything bad about this place other than its a dive.
