Toh Zan Nagasaki Grill has become one of my favorite Japanese resultants in Arizona. Their ramen, three words : perfectly balanced and authentic, nothing to be added, delicious on its own. The tonkatsu dinner has never disappointed, and the yakitori chicken skewers are always spot on. The older Japanese gentleman who takes orders is always friendly, greeting you and jotting your order down in Japanese, which definitely adds to the experience! I wish they served beer, a cold Sapporo would just make it a perfect experience. Place is usually quiet, but never empty which allows the staff to provide a better customer service.

I was excited when my friend wanted to come here for lunch because I haven't been here since they moved to East Mesa. It's the same delicious food, and for some reason the same amount of patronage? When we were here we were the only people at the restaurant save for a few people getting a to-go order. My friend says they do get a lot of business when there are Japanese baseball players in town so that's a testament to the quality of their food. The best way to describe it is homestyle Japanese eats, it isn't super fancy, just really good food by chefs (i.e. the couple that own the restaurant) that know their craft. For our latest lunch adventure I got the oyako don. The lunch meal comes with gyoza and a skewer of yakitori. It was all quite good and it was soon gobbled up. The yakitori was nicely marinated and grilled to perfection. The gyoza was just the right amount of crispiness. The oyako don rice bowl had just the right amount of egg and chicken, with a generous portion of marinated, thinly sliced onion below that. The rice itself was the perfect amount and an ideal consistency. The flavors themselves were spot on. Definitely give them a try if you're in the area looking for legit Japanese food.

A yummy spot for a quick lunch. I was impressed by the tempura udon. The tempura was pipping hot and full of fresh veggies and shrimp. The flavor of the broth was delicious. They had dumplings and a fried chicken skewer on the side.

Easy location and parking. This was a bit of a drive, but we really enjoy supporting mom & pop shops when we can. Intimate dining, with a few larger tables in the back. Friendly staff and limited menu. However, what they make is delicious. We enjoyed the chicken gyoza; the egg rolls were quite different than what we are used to, but still good. Teriyaki bowl was very good; tempura had a thicker batter than I like, but still very good. Grilled teriyaki with grilled onions in the bento box was really good. No alcohol is served here, but still worth the good eats.

I am so glad we found Toh Zan! Everything was delicious. We had ramen, udon, and tempura. Sooo good. Next time we will try some sushi. The owner was friendly, the place is cute and tidy, and the food is served quickly. We took the mochi ice cream home for desert. Definitely will go again soon!

This place is absolutely amazing with great food! Definitely a place to try when you want a nice slow sit-down restaurant. The owner (I'm assuming) was very polite despite being the only one taking orders and bringing out the food. If you're looking for a fast quick bite, then this isn't necessarily the right place for you. That's not to say it isn't good! It really helped me slow down and relax and I could tell everything was freshly made and not microwaved.

I have lived over in this area for a little over 2 years and have wanted to check this place out, I am so mad I didn't come in sooner. Very small spot but still lots of seating, the service was excellent the gentleman which I assume was the owner was super nice and was managing several tables all by himself. The food came out quickly and was absolutely delicious. We ordered; the ramen with pork tonkotsu broth, salmon nigiri, miso soup and spam musubi. The ramen and miso soup were our favorites the broth was so flavorful and delicious. We can't wait to go back, definitely recommend!

Delicious, authentic food that was everything I was hoping for and more! I ordered the tonkotsu ramen with pork and it was AMAZING. I loved that my entree also came with gyoza and a chicken skewer! Definitely a spot I'll be coming back to for lunch. I just wish they would be open a little earlier than noon!

We had some time to kill on this side of town & decided to try something different. I feel like we found a true hidden gem. From the outside you'd barely notice there's a business inside & inside it's pretty bare bones. The decor is sparse, there's really only a few tables, & no music. Even only seemed to be one person working. However, the food that came out of that kitchen was authentic & AMAZING. The portions were generous & we left full & with a little to go box to bring back to the kids.

My son and I had lunch here on the spur of the moment. Such a great mom/pop spot. Literally. They have eat-in options or takeout. The owners were so kind and welcoming. The place is very humble, but it felt like going to a friend's home. We ordered the beef udon, Japanese curry with pork katsu and a sashimi plate. It was all delicious and fresh. The curry was so authentic and brought me back to my childhood with homemade curry. The place is not fancy, but I loved it. Just authentic food made from the heart.

When I walked in, I was promptly directed to where I should go so I could place a takeout order. The genuine courtesy of the staff here was just what I needed after a long day. Lots of great options for sushi but ramen sounded amazing on a chilly winter day. I ordered a couple options and requested for the toppings to be separated so my picky eater could pick out what she didn't like. The food was out promptly and packaged with such care. The spice levels felt pretty accurate, the eggs were cooked perfectly, the meat was tender, and the noodles had a great texture. Each bowl had its own flavor profile, but both were equally delicious. We also tried the takoyaki (octopus balls). I was already getting full, so I wasn't as excited about them, but my boyfriend described them as a BBQ pancake bite. These were where the rating dropped. I didn't find anything memorable about either... My friend ordered the tokontsu ramen with think noodles. I had a taste, and while I'd order it if wanting ramen, this was what I expect of good ramen. It hit the right notes on taste and the noodle s were cooked well, just nothing that would make me perk up if someone wanted to get ramen. The highlight, which would have made this a debate between 4 and 5 stars, and which I will go back for (already excited!), was the sizzling Angus beef plate with thick udon noodles. This was one of the better dishes I have had of late, and I am glad I got extra beef and opted for the black pepper sauce. The thinly sliced beef with the thick udon noodles was a perfect pairing, and I ate this much faster than I meant to, not leaving any leftovers despite the add ons. Food came out quick. Upon entering, we were free to seat ourselves and chose a booth by the wall. It was not busy at all and the service was quick and friendly. We started off with a large sake bomb paired with a Kirin Light ($15). We then ordered two Tonkotsu Ramens, one medium spice and one hot spice ($15.99 each). Honestly, the hot spice level did not taste spicy at all, so I would recommend going extra hot if you like spice. They also provide chili powder on the table if you want to add more spice yourself. The ramen broth itself could have used a tad more flavor. I lightly added some soy sauce to the broth which is something I often do to add a little kick. I loved all of the toppings included, from the green onions to the kikurage (wood ear mushroom). My favorite part was the pork chashu, which was really tender and delicious. I also appreciated that the ramen came with a full soft boiled egg rather than half an egg, and the egg was perfectly runny. Before leaving, we ordered their tea special that was buy one get one. We got a matcha milk tea and a cafe latte which I forgot to take a photo of. I felt like the cafe latte could have used a little more sweetness to balance it. Also, I found it neat that Nishikawa offers a rewards program, not something I see often at ramen shops.
