Great spot. I believe this was my first time having soba, and I couldn't get enough. This was a cold dish, and came with a chicken yakitori skewer, veggie and shrimp tempura, and chicken gyoza. The noodles were great texture, the broth was super flavorful, and the sides were quite nice. I've been thinking about this meal every day since. It is a small spot, almost looks closed from the outside. There was just one server who appears to be the owner, and he was very nice and attentive. He checked in to make sure we knew how to eat the noodles properly and gently let us know when the kitchen and restaurant were closing. The croquettes were very nice, and I normally am not a huge fan of takoyaki but the octopus texture in these was nice and soft. Toh Zan Nagasaki Grill has become one of my favorite Japanese resultants in Arizona. Their ramen, three words : perfectly balanced and authentic, nothing to be added, delicious on its own. The tonkatsu dinner has never disappointed, and the yakitori chicken skewers are always spot on. The older Japanese gentleman who takes orders is always friendly, greeting you and jotting your order down in Japanese, which definitely adds to the experience! I was excited when my friend wanted to come here for lunch because I haven't been here since they moved to East Mesa. It's the same delicious food, and for some reason the same amount of patronage? When we were here we were the only people at the restaurant save for a few people getting a to-go order. My friend says they do get a lot of business when there are Japanese baseball players in town so that's a testament to the quality of their food. The best way to describe it is homestyle Japanese eats, it isn't super fancy, just really good food by chefs (i.e. the couple that own the restaurant) that know their craft. For our latest lunch adventure I got the oyako don. The lunch meal comes with gyoza and a skewer of yakitori. It was all quite good and it was soon gobbled up. The yakitori was nicely marinated and grilled to perfection. The gyoza was just the right amount of crispiness. The oyako don rice bowl had just the right amount of egg and chicken, with a generous portion of marinated, thinly sliced onion below that. The rice itself was the perfect amount and an ideal consistency. The flavors themselves were spot on. Definitely give them a try if you're in the area looking for legit Japanese food. read more

This is a gem! When we first pulled up, was not sure if this place was opened. They had tinted windows and could barely see in. But when we went in, we were greeted right away by the server. He sat us down (choose your own seats). It's simple decor. But inviting. Very clean. I ordered the Tenzaru soba. It is buckwheat noodles served cold with a dipping sauce and a generous amount of shrimp and veggie tempura. The tempura was vey hot and crispy coating. They also gave us 2 gyoza and a breaded chicken on a skewer with a drizzle of Teri sauce. I enjoyed all of it. Hubby had Tempura udon. The tempura was served on the side so as not to get soggy in the udon. The broth had a good umami flavor. Noodles are thick and just right. We also ordered shrimp tempura roll, it comes with Japanese mayo on top, which we told them to not add it. Tempura was hot. It was rolled with slivers of fresh cucumber. We enjoyed and ordered another roll. All and all the flavors are authentic Japanese cooking. By the time we were done. The place did fill up. I was glad to see that. Easy location and parking. This was a bit of a drive, but we really enjoy supporting mom & pop shops when we can. Intimate dining, with a few larger tables in the back. Friendly staff and limited menu. However, what they make is delicious. We enjoyed the chicken gyoza; the egg rolls were quite different than what we are used to, but still good. Teriyaki bowl was very good; tempura had a thicker batter than I like, but still very good. Grilled teriyaki with grilled onions in the bento box was really good. I think my friend ordered Oyaku which turned out to be a large platter but since she finished the entire dish with the exception of leaving a bit of the side of rice, I assume she enjoyed it. Very small spot but still lots of seating, the service was excellent the gentleman which I assume was the owner was super nice and was managing several tables all by himself. I have been waiting to try an authentic Japanese restaurant in Phoenix forever!!!! It's family owned, very reasonable pricing, and feels cozy. The staff are all very friendly and I thought the food was great! Overall, I think this is the most authentic Japanese restaurant I've been to in Arizona. It feels home cooked. I got the Toh Zan Dinner Special bento box which was super filling and had a ton of variety. I think overall it was excellent. We ordered the Tekka (Tuna) sushi roll ($6) and made it spicy for $1, Nakaochi-don ($18), and the Japanese Curry (with slices beef) ($13). This family owned restaurant just opened up not too long ago at this location then the pandemic hit, but I'm glad to see they are still open & glad I got a chance to try them out. This restaurant was one of a kind in the state of Arizona. After trying Japanese curry a couple of years ago I have always been on the lookout for a restaurant who serves it in Arizona. There have been a couple I was able to find, but none really stood out to me. I was very impressed with the unique and authentic items on the menu. We ordered the takoyaki for an appetizer, but wasn't very impressed. I have tried many different locations serving takoyaki, this seemed almost fried and without flavor. But don't let that fool you, there are many different tasty selections from this menu. We also ordered the curry and rice with sliced beef, and the katsu-donburi. Also side note, each meal came with a little side of edamame, chicken skewer, and gyoza. The side dishes all tasted very good, love that it comes with the meal. The curry was very rich and had lots of different chunks of potatoes or carrots along with the meat mixed in, which goes amazing with the rice. It's such a warm tasty meal perfect for a cold night. Surprisingly, I also loved the katsu-donburi, the caramelized onions definitely took the dish to a new level. I would definitely come back to try another menu item, knowing that these were good. The atmosphere was very welcoming, and the man who was serving us was very helpful and friendly. Domo arigato! An unassuming, walk-up, takeaway type place with a few deli-style booths for seating. An an elder Japanese gentleman is running the front of the restaurant. He will take your order, complete with traditional Japanese expressions and acknowledgments. Your food is served on a cafeteria tray, but somehow still doesn't lack presentation. When you're done, you pay at the counter. Everything we had was delicious! When I asked how they got the crispy coating on the chicken, he bowed his head, gave me a dirt-off-the-shoulder sweep of the hand and said, "Family secret." Not a bad spot to get noodles, ramen bowls, and appetizers. First time trying this place and ordered take out. Definitely more of a noodle place than sushi. Also ordered their shu mai and they were little overdone, and the owner gave us a refund since they were crispy. Some of us really enjoyed that version of the crispy shu mai but not like the traditional steamed version. This family owned restaurant is a well deserved 5/5. I have been to Japan several times and this restaurant serves food almost identical to the authentic taste of Japanese food. I am from California and moved to Arizona for work and it is safe to say that this restaurant is tremendously better than most Japanese restaurants in CA due to the authenticity Yoshi (Chef) provides. The gyoza is barely acceptable, but the egg rolls are disgusting. They charge $5 for two small egg rolls that should never be consumed and digested. All of it is grotesque and unhealthy frozen food. I'm predictably boring, so I ordered the chicken teriyaki. It was very good! I like how they add a side of edamame, a yakitori chicken skewer and a chicken gyoza to your meal. It makes you feel like you ordered a bunch of appetizers, and all were delicious! My husband is not at all boring, and he enjoyed his bowl of Chan-Pon. Pretty excited that there's an authentic Japanese spot in out neighborhood! It reminds me alot of restaurants I ate at in Los Angeles so I was pretty happy. Apparently this place closed down recently and moved to this new location and it's pretty legendary from what I have heard. Looking at the menu, I was very excited about the ramen since there's no ramen place in our neighborhood. My wife went with the tempura dinner and really gives you plenty of food to enjoy. The tempura was really tasty and wasn't too greasy. You got to love the sweet dip they give you too. With the edamame, chicken skewer, gyoza and rice, there's plenty of great food to enjoy. I ordered the tonkontsu ramen with the chashu. The bowl was pretty big and had a pretty tasty broth. The noodles had a nice flavor and texture with all the ginger, chashu, mushrooms all made a pretty good bowl of ramen. Looking forward to coming back to try out other dishes. I really want to try out the Japanese curry with my next trip. Good place for great food. Nice to have a great restaurant like this in our neighborhood read more
