When I tell y'all I did not know what I kept riding past on greenmount. However, IG brought me to my new love for Ramen. I made my reservation on Yelp which they had a lot of times available for when I wanted to go. They have street parking on both sides of the street. The customer service was good. They were really busy and all the staff works together to get the job done. Their drink menu changes I was told if it's not on the menu you're not about to order it. Example: I wanted tequila in the drink instead of whiskey and it's not available. The drink I picked was still good. The atmosphere is giving cozy family/friend hangout and I love it. My first visit to Toki Underground was at the new Baltimore location. It was everything I wanted it to be and more. We were there about two weeks after opening. I had a reservation for two and five o'clock. Upon arrival there was already a group gathering at the door. We were all eager to get in there. I love the decor. Rotating skateboards above. A sticker wall. The seating at the counter was adorable. The ambiance all together was perfect. The service was spectacular. Our server was Brenden. He was fairly new but was great. When he wasn't waiting on us, all the other employees would help out as they passed the table. Grabbing empty plates. Checking water. Everyone was attentive and friendly. I really appreciate that. THE FOOD! Spectacular. Phenomenal. Tasty. Started with corn kichigai, kimchi and pork pan fried dumplings. All were so good. But the dumplings were out of this world. Expected your regular old dumpling but it was so much more than that. Red miso ramen warmed us up in all the right ways. The egg was cooked perfectly and we added garlic confit. Came here with a group of 7 on a Friday Evening. We had called a couple hours before to make a reservation, and were able to secure a table. The table was the round table in the corner and is only supposed to seat 6 people, but were able to fit 7 of us. Service was okay, sometimes felt slow and other times felt rushed, but was expected based off of how busy this place is. The inside seating area felt like a speakeasy, dimly lit and intimate. The first time I came to Toki Underground I got the Mazamen, but didn't enjoy it as much as I thought it would. I remember that my friend got the Dan-Dan noodles the last time we went and I enjoyed it more than the Mazamen. This time I ordered the Dan-Dan noodles and they were even better than I remembered. The sauce was rich and creamy and surprisingly still vegan. It definitely tasted like a rich seafood pasta and I enjoyed every single bite. The only complaint is that they serve it with whole roasted cashews, which I just ate first so I could enjoy the noodles. The pickle plate is also a fun item to order especially since it has an assortment of pickles. All the pickles were very tasty, however the Carrot pickles that we received that day were extremely hot. Prices for their food items are on par for what I expect for a ramen place that is so highly praised. Will definitely be back and would be willing to order the Dan-Dan noodles again as a takeout through doordash or another food delivery service! Tables and high tops. Good for casual dates, friend hangouts and a quick meal. Also family friendly. Service: good. Friendly staff and quick service. Food: We got the karage fried chicken, red miso and toki classic. There was nothing special about the karage...kind of over fried and hard. Mayo dipping sauce was standard. The ramens were good. The broths were flavorful and rich. However, the noodles tasted off. Thinner and less chewy than usual. Overall, it's a good bowl of ramen but not the best by far. Drinks: about 6-7 cocktails and good selection of sake, Japanese whiskey and beer. Negative: the surrounding area of the restaurant is definitely less than desirable. Seriously, the vibes, music, noodles, buns, broth, and attention to detail is finally in our backyard, in Waverly. The space is much larger than what you expect from the outside. Once you enter, the open kitchen and fragrance will peak your intrigue. I loved watching the focus of the staff prepare the dishes that delight. Obviously the ramen is amazing but I was shocked at how delicious the Vegan (spicy) broth is. Wow! The real treat and jaw dropping dish is the Shiitake & Cashew Dan Dan Noodle (also vegan). They really went "hard in the paint" on the vegan dishes. The staff was attentive and proactive. Jeff (owner/partner) is affable and happy to engage with patrons during meal service. Oliver (owner/partner) was in the kitchen working magic with the staff. I loved the rotating skateboard decks above the ramen bar and Asian inspired decorations. The restaurant opening coincides with a fantastic beer collaboration with Peabody Heights Brewery that compliments the dishes. Glad to have tried Toki Underground. Never made my way to the DC location. First impression when entering was hip, lively, clean and cozy. Love the open kitchen concept. The hostesses were nice and so was the wait staff. My fiancée and I ordered some apps and the ramen special of the day. She's gluten sensitive so we were happy to see a variety of gluten free options on the menu. The fried cloud shrimps were delicious with some cucumbers on the side with spicy mayo sauce, but the wings were not to our liking. My fiancée got to try apple sidra for the first time and it definitely brought back memories for me since I haven't had it in decades. The Taiwanese ramen was definitely better than I expected. I'm used to Japanese ramen, but with my family being mainly from Taiwan, I was glad this is something we can find in a city like Baltimore. I had been to the Toki location in DC several times and it is one my top ramen spots so decided to give this location a try. It's not in the greatest area and parking was a challenge. Finally inside, it's very intimate and edgy when you walk in - perfect for date nights. They have a separate section that's partly outside that's not as nice. Service was friendly but took very very long to order and to finally get our food. It was a Friday night and pretty busy but it really affected the experience. Finally I got my tapei curry ramen- great ingredients but the broth was very underwhelming. After adding a spice bomb and other seasoning it was a bit better. If you're looking to try ramen, may be a nice spot to go to a on a weekday with a reservation. read more

I had heard great things about the Toki Underground location in DC, so was especially excited to see it open up in Baltimore. The area that it is located in isn't the best (I personally probably wouldn't walk around unaccompanied at night), but the inside of the restaurant is really hip. We came on a Friday evening after snagging a reservation around 6:45 and I am really glad we did, because the place really filled up. There is a counter bar which may be open for first-come first-served, but we sat at the high-top. The service was really fast too - I think we were in and out within 45 minutes. I got the vegan ramen which really rich and full of complex flavor, that unfortunately didn't fully vibe with my taste buds. Luckily the dan dan noodles are also vegan (and tasty). If you live nearby and you are not waiting outside everyday at 5 you are seriously missing out. They have a very extensive happy hour selection. We basically ordered one of everything...nothing disappointed. The portions and quality were amazing. Everyone that worked there was pleasant and helpful. The interior has an amazing atmosphere with a very cool moving sculpture on the ceiling. We sat at the bar and had a fantastic server who was a magician behind the bar and made sure we got our happy hour on. Would definitely go again, I think they even take reservations for happy hour. It's a great atmosphere in a very convenient location. I don't personally care for this style of ramen, but they have delicious chicken and other options on the menu. Annoyingly, they wouldn't seat us without reservations, but I was able to walk outside and make a reservation for 10 minutes later. The host really should've done this for me, their intention was to refuse me service, they were surprised when we came back in after successfully making a reservation. Frustrating to see a new restaurant wantonly putting off customers. Edit: This was back in July, I see there are other complaints about customer service and the owner addressed that. I can appreciate the skill it takes to make a truly rich and flavorful ramen broth. But all that skill doesn't matter much if the ramen doesn't actually taste good. My miso ramen with pork belly was very rich, but so astronomically and indescribably salty and greasy that I couldn't eat it. It was like taking a spoonful of extra salty melted butter. The best I could do was to eat the broccoli and be done. Additionally, the restaurant was extremely hot, and so noisy that we couldn't communicate with our server except by pointing to the menu. Took 3 of my friends who had never been and I had talked a lot about this place. Had a 7pm reservation didn't get sat until close to 7:20. Our server was mia most of service. We only were able to order one round of drinks. But when taking our order I chose the curry ramen to which he said oh the original and I corrected him and said no the curry then showed him it on the menu repeated it back to him which he repeated back so I thought it was okay. Luckily I got my friend to order and egg on the side bc when the food runner came he just started putting dishes down as announcing them not giving us a chance to put them with the proper guest and to no surprise server rushes over when the food runner tries to hand me the "original" or "house ramen" to which I said is this the original that was supposed to be the curry. Server grabbed it no apology. Had to wait another 10-15 mins while everyone else enjoyed their dishes. My ramen must have been rushed bc it came out luke warm at best. Very disappointing honestly. I came here for a Yelp elite event and was astounded at how good this place was. I've been itching to get back here so I could leave a proper review to let the world know how good the ramen is here and it finally happened! So from the beginning, the location is a little sketch. I used to live a few blocks away so I wasn't that sketched out, but I can see other people who are not from the area being reluctant to park their cars on the street, or walk far in this neighborhood. In fact, our friends who met us there took an Uber. There is a parking lot on the corner of the block though and I've parked both on Greenmount Ave and across the street on Ilchester without issues. When you walk in, you can immediately see how hip this place is! There's toys in the showcase and skateboards on the ceiling, not exactly your typical ramen joint. The staff are all very friendly and welcoming. We sat in the covered space outside. It is a bit quieter out there and they have heaters set up. It's very cute. And now for the main event, the food. We got the pork belly bao buns and toki wings as appetizers and various types of ramen for our meals. Everything was top notch! The toki wings are so flavorful and crispy but saucy, while still moist on the inside, so good! The pork belly buns came as a plate to construct your own. The sauce is my favorite part. It compliments the crisp of the pork belly so nicely. I have tried both the toki classic ramen and the spicy ramen, but this time I got the Tapei curry ramen. The flavor was excellent, but what I really want to point out about all of their ramens is the texture of the broth. It's thick and hearty, but not like a stew, definitely still a broth, but just chock full of proteins and fats and bursting with umami flavor. This is how ramen is supposed to be. I think they use the same tonkotsu base for all of their ramens and then add the spices so every ramen I've had here has had that same mouth feel and I am here for it!
