I remember Tokie's back when it was in the Foster City location, and crazy that it's been over 6 years since my last Tokie's experience. The new location is quite nice. The decor and bar area are really well done. The staff is really nice and attentive. Quick to take orders and get drinks out so kudos to the staff. However, the food was not as good as I had remembered. Being a fan of Japanese curry, I decided to go with the curry pork tonkatsu plate. Upon arrival to the table, it looked looked and tasted on the cold side, which was a bummer. The curry was missing something, and didn't have any distinct flavors. The katsu was lightly fried, and fell apart relatively easily. There's definitely some room for improvement here. More curry, would definitely amplify this dish. $20 is a bit steep considering the flavor and small portion. For the sushi, I went basic and had a california roll, which was OK. The rice was lacking that vinegar taste to the rice and fell apart when I picked it up. Overall, just an OK experience, there's a bunch I didn't try, so maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. I would go back if somebody invited me, but won't be rushing back on my volition. read more

For drinks, I would stick to the regular sake while eating sushi here. Also, their house sake is about $5-$7. FOOD: Shishito peppers $5.50 (3.8/5) it was good but just way too oily. Their oyster special was $7/2 (3/5) the oysters were really small and presentation was not there and the oysters weren't even given on a plate of ice! if I'm paying $3.50 for one oyster, I had hoped for at least a good lemon wedge!! But was only give slices of lemon. Hopefully they can work on that. Diane roll $14 (3.5/5) deep fried roll with crab meat and avocado. their sauce on this was really flavorful . RONNIE ROLL My favorite roll - the Ronnie Roll, a CA roll with salmon and lemon slices atop. We always get this roll every time we come here. I also like the tempura udon - one of the more flavorable tempura udons I have had. We have tried other rolls and they are good too. Have not had any bad dishes here. The decor is very pleasantly Japanese, with light brown and authentic wood carvings brought over from Japan! Foodwise, you really can't go wrong. As far as rolls go, the Diane is my favorite, but Firecracker is also quite solid. Shannon+Ronnie are great as well. Basically any of the named rolls are quite good. Hamachi Carpaccio is quite good, and I also recommend the Gyoza and Seaweed salad to start. Drinks- incredible selection of Japanese whiskey, Sake, Vodka, and creative cocktails to boot. I highly recommend the Bonseki. Service- amazing. Wow. Decided to give this place one last chance. Currently sitting at the table. Saturday Father's Day dinner. Their deep fryer is broken, unable to order anything that is fried. You'd be surprised how many dishes and sushi rolls are fried. Ran out of chicken wings for glazed chicken wings. There are only two guys making sushi for the whole restaurant. 35 minutes in, first sushi roll arrives. 40 minutes in, my sushi arrives. I'm not waiting another 40 minutes to order anything else. The decor in here is great with a nice modern and young vibe with the full service bar. The food is good as well but not great which I was not expecting it to be. I let my boyfriend choose the next Japanese restaurant to go to and he ended up choosing Tokie's which I have never heard of and that's a win for him because I tend to know my food places. We came by on a weekend around 6pm for dinner and had a 30 minute wait. The only downside to their location is that they're located on the further end of downtown San Mateo so if you're here and have a wait, you can walk the furniture store next door or a grocery market. No real small shops nearby so you may be a little bored during your wait. Once I stepped inside, I had a feeling I knew why my boyfriend chose this place. Their interior had a lot of wood work to it and my boyfriend is a sucker for wood work - especially when it involves a reclaimed wood wall so atmosphere = 5. We were seated after 30 minutes and at a very odd spot in the corner of the restaurant. While most 2-people tables have you facing one another, ours was placed to where one of us faced the wall, and the other faced the window looking out... we did want to move the table a bit to fit our own needs, but opted against it because I didn't want to be a burden. It was awkward, though. We ordered their fried calamari, smoke salmon nigiri, hamachi nigiri, Jeffrey roll, and their version of a Lion King roll I believe. Calamari was good, but their choice of sauce wasn't a good match in our opinion and their smoke salmon was alright, but didn't really look like smoke salmon so we had to double check with our waiter to make sure it was. All in all, our bill came out to about $40-50 which is an average meal cost for us and that was good. We came, we ate, we left content. read more

I had high hopes for this place due to the high ratings. I agree with most reviewers that service was excellent and staff was friendly. The place was clean but the seating area/booth was small and tight- not good for big party. The food came out really slow so expect to stay hungry for a bit. As you can tell by my pictures, some of the rolls were not rolled tight enough- kind of sloppy. A big no no for a Japanese restaurant. The food was ok but a bit pricey especially the soft shell crab was $8 for 2-3 small pieces/bites. The miso cod was delicious but for $15, it was a sliver, paper thin slice. Overall, while I somewhat enjoyed my dinner but probably won't return due to the freshness of their fish, the wait, and the price.
