I wouldn't come back. We got here at around 6:30pm on what we thought wasn't a really busy sunday night. We ended up leaving close to 8pm. We got our drink and food order in pretty quickly and then we waited. 20, 30, 45 minutes...we finally got our food close to the hour mark. The food was fine. It wasn't anything special, especially for the price. There are so many really good Italian restaurants in the area at this price point, so I am surprised that anyone would come back to Tomatina. I don't know that I have ever been forgotten about in a restaurant that bad before. We arrived around 8pm and we're seated quickly, but ignored just as fast as our butts hit the seat. I believe we sat for 15 minutes before we were even acknowledged...by someone who wasn't our waiter. We quickly put in our water, drink, appetizer and meal orders with the gentleman in order to avoid any other delays. When our drinks came, they were delivered by our waiter, who happened to be the same guy we saw chatting up a table the entire time we had waited. Our food arrived (reasonable timing) & the tomato soup was really good! The Mediterranean salad could have used a more flavorful dressing and the calamari wasn't really seasoned, so again, more disappointment. The table was cleared and we were given the dessert menu as requested, but sat around forever waiting to order once again. I literally sat there and watched the waiter just stand at the food station waiting for food that wasn't coming out anytime soon. His time could have been used way better if he was checking on the occupied tables while he waited. Finally we ordered dessert and it couldn't have been any more disappointing I was looking forward to a moist, gooey, warm chocolate brownie covered in caramel and whip cream (I was drooling at the thought of this yummy ending to a bummer meal/experience). Instead..... I ended up with a dry, cold, crumbling, hard brownie. Thank goodness for the caramel and whip to give it a little something....but dude, it was horrible!! We're not impatient at all. Seriously. So if we resort to having the bartender refill our drinks, there's a big problem. We rarely saw our server, and had to beg for the check. I went to the one by Mission College for YEARS and my fave thing is the Caesar salad piadine. Basically, a simple flatbread with Caesar salad on top. I was excited when a Tomatina opened up much closer to home. I went today to order to go for lunch and the guy at the bar said it's not on the menu anymore. He walks over to whom I assume was the manager and they have a conversation. He comes back to me and says, "sorry, it's not on the menu. You can't order it." Okay... I don't understand why a restaurant would lose a customer over something so easy to fix? They still have the piadine - just topped with different salads, and they still have Caesar salad on its own. The manager could have easily figured out a way to price that. They weren't rude - the guy at the bar was polite. The manager didn't bother to come over to explain anything himself, so maybe that's rude (or just lazy) and it's no wonder the restaurant was basically empty. Instead, I went to Boudin next door. They were quite busy, but the cashiers were great and the food was great. You'd think Tomatina would be trying a bit harder when there are so many other food options in the Bay Area! read more

I hadn't been to Tomatina in quite a while and was wary of returning given some of the negative reviews. However, my grandson wanted to go there for his birthday, so we went last night (Aug 10). There were 8 of us, including an active 10 month old. It was great. Our server was Dakota and she was very attentive. There was a slight delay with one of the appetizers and she kept us updated on its progress. Everyone seemed to enjoy their entrees. Overall, I was very satisfied. read more

I have to say that I was greatly disappointed by my experience at Tomatina. After a long and tiring day, all I wanted to do was to have a nice dinner with some friends. While we were somewhat put off by the time it took to get a table (about 30 minutes), the wait for our food was even worse (upwards of 35 minutes). This wait was accentuated by the shortage of bread that they would usually pass out to customers, which, among other things (ie. lack of appropriate tableware) is a testament to their neglectfulness. As an excuse for their shortcomings, they waved around the fact that this was their first night for business, yet they had a soft opening several days prior. The most outrageous behavior, however, was when on the menu it clearly stated that all chicken and salmon plates in the large plates section came with seasonal vegetables and penne with marinara sauce, yet my Chicken Risotto failed to come with it. This statement directly affected my decision to order that dish, but I was only made aware of an exception after I asked for the penne. Both the menu and our server failed to inform me of this, and the manager was unwilling to provide any compensation for this whatsoever. Instead, she attempted to shift the blame away from herself and the inadequacy of the crew to a failure of the "higher ups" that created the menu. She even attempted to discreetly flip us off in a moment of unprofessionalism (but, really, it was more than just a moment). I hate to give such a low rating to a relatively new restaurant, but the only way it earned a star was our service from Jose (and Yelp's rating system). Overall, this experience opened my eyes to a new level of terrible and I would think twice (actually, way more than twice) before setting foot in Tomatina. read more

I've only just started going here, but I have very much enjoyed my experiences here. The staff are extremely friendly and efficient. The place is very nice inside and the outside seating is awesome, especially at night when they turn on some romantic lights to help the mood for anyone. As per usual with most Italian/ pasta places, the bread is a key factor. And the bread here is excellent with what I believe is rosemary and other herbs. They also bring diced and seasoned tomatoes with olive oil on top which actually beats the bread. The other food is excellent as well, although I would watch out for the risotto because it can come out quite watery at the bottom but still delicious. The piadinis are especially excellent (steak piadini is my personal favorite). Very fresh and well cooked ingredients. They also make their own pasta which is very excellent. I would warn that their specials are amazing as well, but quite small portions (fortunately they'll still fill you up). You can also order 3 sides as your whole meal for about $12-15 (I don't quite remember). I'm not gonna lie, it is a fairly pricey place but well worth it. read more

3.5 Stars This place just opened and they're located in the shopping center where Sprouts and Trader Joe's is located. Anyways, the food here isn't bad and the service was friendly and attentive. If you come here before 4p.m, you can get whatever is on the lunch special menu. You get your choice of soup or salad and an entree. Anyways, we started our meal off with the fried polenta appetizer. It came in one big piece with a bunch of tomato sauce around it. It's nowhere near as good as the fried polenta that I've had at Brazilian buffets, but it was decent. I guess that the Italian version is a little different from the Brazilian one. My husband got a bowl of tomato soup which was small. He complained about how they only filled it up half way, lol. We also got some complimentary rosemary foccia bread with some sort of bland chunky tomato spread. For the entree, I got the chicken picatta with white wine sauce and capers. It came with a small side of roasted broccoli & cauliflower. It also came with a side of penne pasta in some bland tomato sauce. I tried a piece of my husbands chicken Parmesan and it was good. My chicken dish was OK. I liked the fact that I was able to get the sauce for the chicken made with olive oil instead of butter. I love it when restaurants are fine with accommodating their customers. They have a lot of different kinds of pizzas and flat bread pizzas here as well. We'll probably come back here again although the portions are on the small side. The prices are decent and the place is clean and nice. Came on their first night open for business (keep in mind their soft opening was a few days ago). Wait time for food for our party of four neared half an hour (after half an hour waiting for a table), and two of our four dishes (Chicken Risotto and Orecchiette Carbonara) were overly salty. They also ran out of their complimentary focaccia and refused to serve any appetizer in its place, so we ended up buying sourdough from Boudin next door and eating it at our table. These are all understandable occurrences for a new restaurant, and the staff made it very clear that they were still in training in all of their apologies. It might seem harsh to give 2 stars given that it's their first night, but since they refused to comp anything and made us pay full price for our meals, then I can only rate the restaurant against a standard for food and service that I would expect at that price point. Sorry Tomatina, you can't blame everything on the fact that your restaurant is new, but still charge customers as if everything was just as it should be. Hope to have the opportunity to raise this rating in the future, but for now this is where it stands. read more

I am a former customer of Tomatina's on Saratoga Ave because the food is poor quality and Tomatina's male staff members do not know how to be business professional with my sister and I. I used to love coming to this restaurant in the beginning when it opened -- I tried their many entrees and loved most of them. But after a few visits, I didn't enjoy it anymore -- mainly because if a male employee was behind the counter getting my takeout food, he would have an attitude with me. (The Italian looking young woman with light brown hair was always good to me and very professional.) My sister also voiced the same problem she had with Tomatina's male employees. But my brother said Tomatina's always treats him great, with perfect service. After a few conversations - my sister, brother, and I realized Tomatina's male employees treat male customers great with business professionalism but not the women customers. Most restaurants don't do anything to correct this problem...which is why I never said anything to a manager. I just quickly corrected Tomatina's male employees so I wouldn't have to call a manager. But I stopped being a customer at Tomatina's when I had the Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo -- every time I had it at Tomatina's I would get up in the middle of the night because my body wanted to throw it back up. But when I this same dish - Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo - next door at The Blue Door, it was good and my body loved it because it was better quality food versus Tomatina's. So whenever I have a craving for some good Italian food -- I go to The Blue Door because their food is better quality than Tomatina's...and their male employees treat me great with that good business professionalism. I was so excited to see a nice looking italian restaurant in our neighborhood. I just wish the food tasted as good as the place looks. Came on a Saturday at 7:30, there was a 20 minute wait so we decided to take out. We ordered two salads and waited 25 minutes for them. The bar has open seating so if you don't mind sitting at the bar, I would opt for that. I got the Caesar salad with oven baked chicken. Their house made Cesar dressing looked and tasted like mayonnaise. It coats your mouth and leaves you tasting garlic for hours. The few croutons that were in the salad were stale. I was hoping the chicken would save it, but it lacked flavor and was incredibly dry. My mom got the brussel sprout salad and although the sprouts were good, the dressing they put on it was so salty. If the salads are this bad, I wonder how the rest of the food tastes? I'm not sure I'll be back to try. read more

They are pet friendly which is nice, but didn't ask us if we wanted a water bowl. My wife had shrimp capalini and the only way to get flavor was to add salt from the salt shaker. We came here on a Tuesday night because we were starving and it was the closest to where we were running errands. We told the waiter that he could take it after 1 bite. He asked if we would like it boxed and we said no thank you. Of course, it was still on the bill. *Cesar Salad---- very basic. The pre made kits at grocery stores taste better. I did eat all of this but only because I was starving and it was edible. We ordered a glass of pinot noir and was informed that bottles are half off on Tuesday so we opted for a bottle(the most expensive on the menu) Big mistake, when the bottle was presented it was a twist off (ick) and had very little flavor. Tasted like water with a wine aftertaste. We each had a sip and left our full glasses and the rest of the bottle. Our meal : I ordered the Mama's Spaghetti and Meatballs because it was a house specialty. I've had jar sauce with more flavor. It looked very orange (?) and so watery. The noodles were over cooked and the meatballs were flavorless. My husband and son ordered a large pizza to split. I had a piece since my food lacked flavor. It was ok. The sauce (like the pasta sauce) tasted watered down and had little flavor. Not good, but definitely the best part of the meal. As we were waiting for our check, the table over had ordered a bottle of wine with a real cork and the waitress had NO IDEA how to use the wine opener. The customer tried to explain to her how to use it after she pretty much disintegrated their cork. ..she still couldn't figure it out so he took it from her and opened it himself. I was embarrassed for her. This restaurant should really train the employees how to open wine. So, $100 later, we left the restaurant, very unhappy and still hungry. One star for our waiter, who was attentive and good at his job. But, our wine was a twist off so who knows if we would've ordered a different bottle. I say, save your money and DO NOT go here. This place opened within the last month and my family I and decided to try it. Many of the problems that they have will pribably go away within a couple months of operating. They are priced about in line with standard american fair such as Applebee's and BJ's. The service was very friendly but a tad slow. My whole family ordered 5 pastas, ice teas, and a fried calamari. The pastas were small and us light eaters easily finished our portions. The calamari was nice, it was fried just right and came with some fried onions as delicious garnish. The bread that comes before appetizers is good, warm, soft, and is served with a pretty good olive oil tomato sauce. The ice teas were empty halfway through our entrees and were never refilled. I would advise sitting on the perimeter of the restaurant as this is where the drink refill people seem to patrol. I personally had the shrimp capellini. The shrimp were not flavorful, and the pasta was a tad too wet. The sauce was a tasty tomato blend. The bathroom hallway is located so that you must awkwardly, possibly disruptively, through the waiter station and ordering console. Not only is the hallway narrow at this point, there is a 4 way traffic flow of bathroom goers, kitchen staff, wait staff, and bar staff who need to get through. The bathroom was of poor hygiene and was low on toiletry stock. I would go again only for lunch specials. This place is not geared to be a nice place to go for dinner with your family, more of a place that you go because you know it's open. Also I would like to note that it was extremely noisy in the restaurant. Our total was $89 before tip. They also offer a loyalty rewards program that requires sign up. We went to the Saratoga Tomatina location on Prospect mid-week. It was fairly crowded and extremely noisy. We were seated quickly but it took 15 minutes to get our order taken. The main dishes we ordered were fine but a "Greek Salad" was insulting to Greek salads as it had little resemblance. The dressing was a very large amount of vinegar. The waitress suggested a December special custard. I expected something like flan or creme brulee. However this was nothing like that. For $8 this was a very narrow glass with 1/3 whipped cream on the top layer, 1/3 of something that was supposed to be custard but instead tasted like pudding that was off. It was definitely not custard. The bottom 1/3 layer was simply caramel topping syrup which is almost pure sugar. It is also important to note that it took around 15 minutes for this pre-prepared dessert to be served to us. We were just about to ask for our bill with the dessert cancelled when it arrived. I strongly recommend that people avoid ordering this. It upset my stomach all night. read more

There was nothing Italian in my Italian Cobb salad...not even the dressing, but it was tasty and filling and the dish was huge, so I could take almost half with me home and enjoy it again later. The menu has many options and even our vegetarian friend who doesn't like any restaurant ever, found something she surprisingly liked without throwing items out of her plate, make miserable faces, and complain loudly about the food like she usually does. Only that worth coming back. It's my first time here and it was just fine for a Friday lunch break with my friends. I wish the server was nicer and wouldn't act so stressed and impatiently. But he came around after we got ordered our food and things calmed down a little with other tables, still his early face making act heart his tip with no repair. read more

They used to serve the most wonderful bread starter that was bruschetta-like. As good as the meals are I could have eaten the bread all night. Now, suddenly, they serve these foot long, pencil thin breadsticks that are hard and tasteless. Look around and you'll see that most people don't eat them. The best part is that the waiters often forget to bring them so you don't have to think about not eating them. My kids and I have been to Tomatina's four times in as many weeks. Not once have we failed to be impressed. My daughter is in love with the spaghetti and meatballs while my son always has the personal sized pepperoni pizza. My favorite is the hummus piadine. Tonight I tried the bruschetta and thought it was absolutely amazing. The service has been top notch as well. Attentive, conscientious, and at the top of their game. I was heart broken when they closed and a Tomatina toke there place. I wanted to give them a chance, This is my second time eating here! The experiences have been the same both times The pros the service is good and quick! But the food tastes like card board. Everything tastes as if it is precooked and remade. There are no favorites no their meals. Your eating cardboard!!! I really wanted to like this place, especially since they replace my old favorite REAL Italian restaurant. it's a casual family-style italian restaurant with decent selection. look, you can go to olive garden or a place like this. given that san jose isn't really a cornucopia of fine italian dining, this place is actually a welcome addition. you won't get something that will make you think of NYC italian, but it's certainly passable, and service is quick and friendly. prices are very reasonable. most dishes are in the $12 to $15 range, and portions are decent. plus, there is a boudin's sourdough outlet next door, so that's a plus to me. read more
