We stopped in for a late breakfast/early lunch after a charity walk. we were the first to arrive when they opened. Service: The gentleman that seated us was amazing and accommodating. The older gentleman who walked around picking up empty dishes was a gem. Our waitress...a little snippy on a couple of occasions - Once when she mistook ice tea for a cup of ice and insisted we asked for ice, and another when I asked her not to refill my children's sodas - didn't appreciate her eye roll. Food: The garlic roll appetizer was amazing! Skip the sauce and just enjoy the bread and garlic oil. Two had the piadrine and were happy with it. One had French toast and it looked amazing. My kids had the special, braised short ribs over papperdelle. Oddly enough, the sauces looked different. The whole dish was bland. We took it to go but ended up tossing it. Another had shrimp pomodorro and it was pleasing. Two of us had eggs Benedict. Huge letdown on many levels: 1. I ordered hard poached and my yolk popped and poured all over. 2. It was supposed to come on foccacia and it came on plain white bread. 3. The Canadian bacon was little scraps and very salty. 4. The hollandaise said it was a citrus hollandaise but all you could taste was the lemon. way overpowering. 5. There was a small scattering of potatoes on the side that were flavorless. This restaurant has been here in Walnut Creek for many years! They're a good place to go to if you enjoy a different variety of food options, which are all healthy and contain big portions. They do have indoor & outdoor seating, but their outdoor seating does have a roof, so you won't get wet if it rains. They also have outdoor heaters to keep you warm if it's cold, and they have ceiling fans to keep you cool if it's hot outside. Their outdoor seating is nice if you have loud kids or if you want to bring your furry companions with you. You do have to pay for street parking which is enforced from 10am to 8pm, although the parking garage next to the movie theater is free for 4-Hour parking, which is walking distance from Tomatina. As for the quality of their food, it's really good and healthy; and for the amount of food that you get too, it's worth the price. read more

This little Italian spot is huge in flavor. It has inside and outside seating. Very warm and cozy setting. The customer service is very good. Welcoming and attentive. We started out with an order of meatballs as a starter. Very tender and moist. Excellent flavor laying in a bed of sauce. Then we had a classic Caesar salad. Moving on to the main dish of baked penne bolognese. Excellent. A large serving of penne pasta baked with melted mozzarella and bolognese sauce. The freshness of the seasoning is fantastic. Next I had Mamas spaghetti and meatballs. Yes. A classic dish that was made to perfection. The sauce is so fresh with a little hint of spice and the meatballs again are perfectly made and so tender they melt in your mouth. Enjoyed a good selection of Italian wines that paired well with the dishes. For dessert we had the baked apple crisp. With a soft cream served on top that was amazing. I have been coming to Tomatina since it opened in 2002...It has never disappointed. I just ordered a to go steak piadini and it was so good! They changed some elements to it, like instead of meat being cubed it was sliced and oh so tender. Flat bread also changed, again even better. It's my favorite restaurant in Walnut Creek to this day. BAM! We're back baby. Walnut creek had a soft opening today and we went to one of our family faves, Tomatina. As usual, the staff, especially Max and Kirsha were beyond friendly and accommodating. Every precaution was taken to make sure things were clean and safe. It was AMAZING to have our favorite Italian dishes, on the patio, beer in an actual glass. This place is back! Wife and I used to eat from here all the time, but around 2018 stopped coming as often because the manager (at that time) was so rude. Last week we came back and completely different experience. The new GM Kayla rocks! I cam with my 4 year old and at the time only outdoor seating was available. However when Kayla saw that my daughter was afraid of the traffic noise, she rearranged tables inside to make an extra table for us to sit down. Everyone was so polite and courteous. We've been going to Tomatina for years, and have meant to write reviews many times. I have rarely experienced the excellent customer service that I consistently get from Tomatina, but today sealed the deal. Tomatina helped get us through the last year and a half with their Thursday night kids' Special (a free kid's meal for every main course, including large salads.) We were once-a-month regulars, and racked up a bunch of discounts and freebies on the Thanx app, of which they are a member. Occasionally I'd get home and find a dish missing, but they were always very gracious about those mistakes and made an effort to make up for them. On top of that, we love the chicken parm, the kids spaghetti and meatballs, the garlic rolls, the antipasto salad, and almost always get the seasonal special and are pleased with the choice. Today was my birthday, and we decided to take advantage of the Thursday Special Kid's deal. I ordered online for pickup as I usually do. This time however, when they rang up the order, the discount didn't show up. Confused, I reminded the cashier it was Thursday, only to learn the the policy had changed to "dine-in only". I expressed my annoyance, feeling I hadn't adequately been warned, but realized as well that I hadn't read every email, nor the fine print on the website that day. Since the food had already been made, I acknowledged that we'd ultimately eat the extra meals, and now we knew the policy and could plan to dine-in in the future. As I was deciding which Thanx discount to apply to the meal, the cashier disappeared for a minute, returning with the manager. They immediately removed the charges for the five kids meals, honoring my understanding of the parameters of the special. I thanked them, remarking that they had made my birthday. Then they went to get our order. And when the overstuffed bag came, on top were two boxes, one labeled Happy Birthday, and the other with a candle taped to it. On top of the discount, they added hot garlic rolls and a dessert!!! You choose among a selection of mains and it comes with a side of either a soup or salad. All of the options are great - I always have a tough time choosing what to order! The Mama's Spaghetti and Meatballs never disappoints. The Chicken Spaghettini isn't very flavorful, but if you want a light pasta, this is a good option. If you want to opt for a healthier option, I like their Insalata Mixta Salad. Ask for the vinaigrette on the side; otherwise, they overload with dressing. I love how everything is reasonably priced. After that, we shared the medium size carne combo pizza. Now this might be bias considering how hungry I was, but I think this made my top 5 best pizzas that I have ever consumed. The meat, the cheese, the crust, the way it's presented, its portions, PERFECT! I definitely found a gem when it comes to pizza. I couldn't stop awkwardly staring at the lady's food next to me. A Hispanic host/waiter was at the entrance.I ask if we could get a table outside. He automatically said no. So we sat inside. The person behind us were Caucasian. He greet them and they as well ask if they could be seated outside and guess what he said yes. Service was terrible with this Hispanic host/waiter (Mind you me and my friend are Hispanic)so to get this treatment from your own kind just says a lot. When we were almost finish eating a Caucasian waiter came to us and he was very nice(I wish we could of got him as a waiter since the beginning). We've been coming here ever since they opened, fairly regularly, until COVID. During COVID we took advantage of their family packs and takeout dining. I made a reservation to take my older parents here as they are just getting back into dining out. I made a reservation on opentable for in-restaurant dining. I definitely was not told that we'd be seated outside on uncomfortable chairs, and that it was basically a take-out experience. The food here is still fine - can't miss with the garlic rolls, the piadinis, and the pizza. But the entire service model has changed for the worse. So now, instead of getting a menu and being served by a server, it is basically a glorified take out restaurant. You sit, scan the QR code, place your order, and they bring it to you. There is very little, if any, interaction with the staff and the food comes out slowly. I'm sure that this has saved them a fortune in overhead, but it is not a restaurant worthy experience by any measure. On balance, I think the use of the QR codes are fine - I actually appreciate the environmental benefit of not wasting paper menus. But I think something in the restaurant experience is lost when you don't have the opportunity to interact with a server, get a feel for the restaurant, and with your group having to continue to stare at their phones for the purposes of ordering. It just feels like a race to the bottom. We don't intend to go back until they come up with some sort of a better solution than this. read more

I ordered the "infamous" garlic rolls and the trio entree with chicken Alfredo, lasagna, and creamy pesto rigatoni. The garlic rolls tasted like burnt garlic- I'm not sure if this is what they were going for but the flavor was very bitter and not good. The rolls were also not that great of consistency. It tasted like it was old, stale bread that they revived by soaking in olive oil. As for the rest of the food, I would compare it to tasting like something microwaved. Not fresh, at all. The cheese on the lasagna wasn't fully melted. I thought the quality of this food was worse than the Olive Garden. Don't waste your money here.
