The cool place to sit is out back on the patio if the weather permits, it is a sweet escape from the urban landscape outside. The staff here is really nice and there are many regulars. This is not a place to eat raw fish, nor is it prepared by Japanese sushi chefs. The chefs were speaking both Mandarin and Cantonese. It is more of a neighborhood place to get rolls and salads. Very poor customer service from a young gentleman who works at the restaurant. I order delivery from here quite often and the two delivery guys who I've had come by and who've worked there for years have always had excellent attitudes and the food arrives on time and hot. Food is always good and consistent. I only order Tomo as takeout and have never eat at Tomo. I order from here a couple of times a week for lunch while I work. The delivery guy is always the same. He's really rude and shakes his head at me in shame every time he delivers my food. Last time he delivered he also threw the bag at me (only in NY does this kind of stuff happen). I always make sure to give him a hefty tip, but I guess pressing the elevator to meet me on the second floor to deliver food is still a nuisance for him. We ordered through Grub Hub because we were craving Asian food and I had to work on papers due tonight so we decided to stay in. After placing the order, Grub Hub said it would arrive in 45 minutes. We received it earlier in only about 30 minutes and the place is located about 2 miles away! The delivery person was pleasant and even gave us a phone call, which we requested in the "Notes" section. This was the Japanese place closest from where I stayed in Brooklyn. The waitress was not very welcoming & I could barely understand her English. I was given a nice complimentary salad which was quite good. However the green salad that arrived after was just a slice of tomato on top of some uncut lettuce, with some sauce put on top. Not only the presentation was poor, but it was unpractical as it made eating this salad, uncut, in a bowl, very difficult. After a couple of bites, I spotted a hair (not mine) in the lettuce, so I stopped there. The sushi plate was nice and I loved the fish; it was melting in my mouth. The deep fried California rolls were also good. In the end, here is what ruined the experience: the unwelcoming, almost annoyed waitress; the hair in the salad; the overpriced sushis; the stupid American pop music playing non stop and that felt out of place. My first experience was a delivery order. The order came fast, the food was good and the delivery guy was so nice! I decided to try eating in and honestly had another great experience. I came close to closing and they still seated me. I actually saw someone else come in after me about 15mins before closing and they let him dine in as well. First time ordering from here because I was craving poke and unfortunately, Bushwick doesn't really have that many poke options (read: none at all). Pros: I'm super picky about the size of my protein whenever I get poke. I hate when fish is cut into big chunks because I have to continuously chew it and the texture becomes gross after a while. So shoutout to Tomo for cutting their protein into much smaller pieces. I also ordered a jasmine milk tea with tapioca, but they called me to let me know that their tapioca wasn't ready, and offered to replace it with lychee jelly for free, so that was really kind of them. Cons: You can't choose what toppings you want, unlike most poke places. By default, the bowls came with "seaweed salad, sesame seeds, peeled edamame, avocado, and shredded red carrots" which is kind of lacking compared to most poke places. $11 for one protein (salmon, I believe tuna is $12) is a lot; poke spots in LES or Bath Beach/Bensonhurst charge like $9 for one protein, $11-$12 for two. The portions were also really small. Granted, I told them to leave out the avocado and carrots, but I was still disappointed about how little of everything else they gave (ie. rice, sauce, protein, etc). Lastly, the drink: I took their offer for the lychee jelly, but I don't quite like the texture of it; it felt kind of slimy and didn't really pair well with the drink. I had the spicy roll combo entree, spicy crab roll was delicious. The spicy tuna and salmon rolls could have been better, not the greatest cuts of fish in my opinion. A bit too fatty and oily. Roommate got the chicken teriyaki dinner box and had no complaints. His food looked nice. My fiance orderered teriyaki tofu dinner box and had no complaints at the time about her order other than the tofu being a bit on the soggy side. All in all it was a decent meal and I would have been inclined to order from there again. Until this morning..... My fiance woke up around 8:00am writhing in pain and ran to the bathroom. She has been sick six times over the past four hours and is currently curled up in a ball in our bed. We know it was the food from Tomo because the only other thing we had to eat yesterday were buttered bagels much much earlier in the day. It was so bad that I considered texting my boss that I wasn't coming in right then and there, but again I decided against it (momma ain't raise no quitter). Fast forward to 7:30am. I wake up in a sweat with the same stomach pains and a gnarly headache. After laying in literal agony for about 45 minutes, I finally decided to let my boss know I wouldn't make it in. Turns out that that was the best decision I've made during this entire fiasco, as I threw up about 30 minutes later. It is now 1:18PM and I've thrown up 2 more times since then. I know the fault isn't on my end (outside of not throwing out this garbage) because I refrigerated my meal right after I finished eating, heated it up for 3 minutes to ensure nothing was raw/uncooked before eating it again, and my last meal before that was a fairly basic chicken sandwich at about 2pm. So what's the moral of my story? DO NOT EAT HERE. They will give you tasteless food and food poisoning. Save yourself the sick day and AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS. P.S. I've ordered almost all of their specialty rolls and most of their sushi bar appetizers and I'm never disappointed! Their fish is fresh and their dish creativity is hard to find - especially in Williamsburg! I have not been able to find another sushi place off the L train that's as good as this place. I don't actually count MOMO (how annoying is the name similarity?) as a sushi place because it's not traditional sushi - they're doing something different there. Dishes to try: Sushi Pizza, Tuna Wasabi Roll, Salmon Skin Salad - these are all delicious and will cause a flavor explosion in your mouth. I've also never experienced bad service as some people have mentioned - the servers are of Asian descent and English is their 2nd language, so I always keep that in mind when I'm there. read more
