I have been going to Tonys for as long as I can remember. My favorite is in the bar...Cadillac margaritas and nachos.

I ate there for the first time last week (during racing season). The margaritas were great, the chips were snappy and fresh. I had fish tacos and the cabbage salad was out of sight! the atmosphere was lively and charming - we all had a great time. I can't wait to go back again! read more

Excellent food and service. I usually get a good idea of the quality of the Mexican food by the chips, salsa, and guacamole and this place did not disappoint at all. We just finished dinner here. We were pleasantly surprised. The patio is so pretty and made us think we were in Mexico. The food was also very good. We tried a little of everything. Turkey tamale, turkey taco, cheese enchilada, cheese crisp... Everything was delicious. Just a heads up, the cheese crisp is a little greasy but tastes great with their guacamole. A North County landmark and local favorite. Tony's doesn't take reservations, so the wait can be long especially during track season, but it's worth the wait. Tonys is one of my favorite Mexican food restaurants of all time! They use turkey instead of chicken, which I love. There's always quality food that tastes delicious. The wait is long sometimes, but it's always worth it and there's typically space in the bar to hang out while you're waiting for a table in the restaurant. I am one of those that was brought to Tony's (with my grandparents) when I was five years old - in the 1960s. My mother retired to the area allowing us to continue the tradition. Everything is good. The BEST chile rellenos. They are 'naked' (no sauce) and fresh. YUM! And they have an old school type bar - not your frilly, umbrella drinks but great cocktails and margaritas. This is hands down my favorite Mexican restaurant in San Diego. The atmosphere is super authentic. The food is amazing and the service is always very attentive. Oh yeah, the bar is really quaint and the drinks are great. Sometimes I hope for a wait, just to pass some time in the bar. I've been coming here with my family since I was a young kid (they've been open since the late 1940s.) Tony's is by far my most favorite Mexican restaurant. I've been going there since I was a kid and I love everything about it. I love the family, the atmosphere, and even the sometimes too loud mariachi band. Depending on the night you go, there's usually a wait. Some people may not like this, but that just goes to show that there's a lot of other people who love this restaurant as much as I do. Their bar is great and stacked. My family and I will usually wait in there, drink, and order some apps. I'm in love with the cheese crisp. Greasy, it may be, but always hits the spot. I'm a plain jane at heart so I usually just order a bean and cheese burrito, but their carne asada plate is amazing! It's flavorable and goes well with their margarita's! I have been coming here for about 40 years and I always love it. Their cabbage salad is the best along with a burrito with sauce and cheese. The food is consistently good! Plus they have always been a big supporter of the Solana Beach little league baseball. read more

This was the worst mexican food experience I have ever had. The salsa tasted like pizza sauce with oregeno. The margaritas had to be sent back because they tasted like bad sweet and sour mix. I make mine with fresh lime juice and these had no lime flavor whatsoever. The chile relleno was stuffed with american cheese and was bland. I cannot believe this place has so many good reviews. Tried this place for the first time while visiting my sister. Now wow food, but so so. I got the fish tacos. It is a deep fried fish stick tossed into a tortilla. The service was great! We always got our refills on drinks and chips and salsa. They have a decent kids menu too. My daughter liked all the birds they have too. read more

Being from LA, there are a gazillion Mexican Restaurants and I've tried my fair share over the years. But friends raved on and on, so while visiting family in SD, we decided to give this place a try. Tony's is a solid Mexican food joint that has been around for quite some time. It seems like they use the same kitchen as Fidel's next door since I wouldn't be able to tell the difference by just looking at the plate and tasting the food.
