It's amazing that they open up at 8am for subs. I've never been there that early in the morning but it's a great place for a good submarine sandwich. They use good deli meats and just a hint of onions in with their lettuce. I like just the use of oils so no mayo or mustard for me. Wow. I mean that in the worst way. Walked in with two of my cousins around 7:30 and it was completely empty. I think we showed up just before closing based on the tone and body language of the guy behind the counter. I don't care if you aren't very friendly but don't grumble under your breath like I can't hear you. It was my first time here and I asked him what I should try. He recommended the Launcher but also said everything was good. I took his recommendation and ordered a large Launcher with baked fries. I have no idea what is supposed to be in the Launcher but I'm positive it isn't supposed to be, what seemed like, 50 slices of bologna. I saw him squirt oil and shake oregano on the bread but the bread was still dry and stale somehow. It was some kind of gastronomic sorcery. This sub place is awful. I ordered the mixed Italian. Most of it was bologna and other cheap qualities of meat. There is no description of the sandwiches on the board, so you have to ask. Can you walk to this place, no. Can you easily drive past this place, yes. Is it worth a trip, yup. This place is not much to look at from the outside. In fact my wife was a little shocked when I took her there. There is some seating outside and some on the inside. There are about 15 different subs, mostly different permutations of about 6 different lunch meats. But its so good, and they put so much meat on the sandwich. I'm pretty sure it would cost me more to buy all the meat and make these at home. But if you want more, they do Italian beefs and sausages (and a combo). All are solid and full of flavor. I'm not sure what brand they use or if they are making their own, but well worth it. Plus you can get a chocolate malt (could be a little more chocolaty) and Carol's cookies. Tony's is just 'okay'. I really only go to Tony's when I'm desperate for a sub, (especially since I do NOT like subway). Ingredients are subpar. Especially the bread. The bread is always hard and crusty, and not the fresh kind of crusty. The fries always have a lingering taste of rancid fry oil which is very unappealing. I come here for two things, the launcher sub and the Italian Beef sammies. They PILE the meat onto the launcher when it comes to subs, so if you like cold sub sandwiches with piled high meat on a delicious sub roll, this place is great. The Italian Beef is phenomenal.....In my opinion, it's better than Al's Italian beef. I get mine with Mozz cheese every time. Unlike Al's or other places that dip the entire bread in juice, Tony's uses just enough just on the inside to soften up the bread but not turn it into a soggy mess. YUM! read more

Another great local Deerfield institution. As a HS student I would end up here once a week with friends to hang out. This also would be the place we would sneak out to and bring lunch back from, so we wouldn't have to eat the horrid lunch food. Tony subs makes amazing subs and each time I go in they always have a new addition. Another tradition on warm summer nights is to stop and get the frozen yogurt. It's so good. Tony's Submarine has probably been in business for at least 40 years - maybe a lot longer. My wife told me that when she was a student at Deerfield HS (before Illinois was admitted to the union), many of the kids would go there during lunch since the school is a short distance from Tony's. Over the years, I had eaten once or twice at Tony's, but I had not been there in a good five years; but since we were traveling from Lake Forest to Glenview, it looked like a good place to stop for lunch - especially because we had a two-fer. We got there a few minutes before the high school crowd would start barging in, and I noticed that they had a lot of pre-made sandwich materials waiting for the kids: they had prepared at least two dozen Italian breads and pre-staged them with lettuce, tomatoes, and other fillings; so they could drop in cheese, meats, and other stuff that the kids would choose. Well, both my wife and I ordered large turkey sub sandwiches with soda. The counter man we confronted had a command of English as good as my command of Nepali, and I had to be rather patient telling him several times that I did NOT want to buy chips. [And no fries either for you ancient SNL fans.] The sandwiches were about a foot long, and were priced about the same as a typical Subway sandwich, although their offerings seemed to be a bit fresher and more appealing. I think they use Gonella bread, for whatever that's worth. The place looks kind of dicey and decrepit - and one would think that it has not been remodeled since the 1960s. If you're hungry for a sub, this is the place to go! They have hot and cold sandwiches which can be a difficult choice since both are very good. I like the turkey and always add bacon. Pretty simple stuff and tasty every time. I also really enjoy the hot Italian beef sub. I am a big fan of mozzarella sticks. They were just ok here. I would stick with just sandwiches. Oh, and the coleslaw is somewhat bland, needed to add some salt and pepper to it. If you are a Chicagoan and have been to Hero's on the north side, this place can come hit close to home. My favorite part is Gonella CRUSTY BREAD. None of that soft, spongy crap at the chains. Twice the meat and cheese for the same prices as the chains. So I am in the mood for a real Sub. Not a chain restaurant Sub. So we go to Tony's and order 3 subs and a italian beef and fries. The beef is decent nothing to write home about. We got tiny bags of soggy, salty fries. Now the subs were flavorless and the bread was stale. The roast beef was dry and stringy with fat and grizzle. Turkey was slimy and salty. Even the attitude of the guy in the place was unpleasant. Would smile no matter what ya did. For the price I paid for those Subs I could have gotten much tastier subs at a much more pleasant establishment. My family couldn't choke the subs down. My dogs wouldn't even eat the food. I'm giving 1 Star for the beef because it was edible. But I would never go back there again to throw my money away. It's a joke. No italian in my house is gonna eat one of those subs. My yearly trip back home always has me writing a list of things I have to do. Since I reside in Texas, eating real food is the first on my list and Tony's seems to find a top three spot each year. I feel the subs here are top notch. Every sub I have ever eaten gets compaired to Tony's and falls far short. I also enjoy the Italian beef. It is a place that takes me back in time thirty years or so and reminds me of a Deerfield that sadly, is no longer there. My only complaint (and this is not reflected in my rating), is Tony's used to be located on Deerfield Rd. The current location was Anthony's Beef Inn. Mr. Vidi owned both places but was forced out or bailed out of the Deerfield Rd. location for some reason. He moved Tony's subs to the Waukegan Rd. location and closed Anthony's Beef Inn. Why he quit making those delicious roast beef sandwiches is a mystery that will haunt me till death. read more

Fantastic, no nonsense, sandwiches make this place an institution in Deerfield. I grew up on these subs and the bread here is the traditional Italian bread used for..well Italian beef. Definitely fresh and complements a sandwich way better than any Subway bread could...ever. If you are a hot head, the giardiniera is super hot and is quite tasty on a sandwich. My favorite sandwich from here has got to be the Meatball. Its one decent size..saucy..beefy mess...so good. The infamous "Air Fries" are cooked in their unique "Air Frier". The fries themselves, in my opinion, dont really compare to a good fresh cut fry in terms of taste (you gotta have friolator grease and a thick idaho potato, my friend), but if you like a really crispy and thin fry (trust me, these are crispy) and you "like" to think you are saving calories, than have at it, hoss. Located adjacent to Deerfield High School, next to a Citgo (I think) gas station. It is on the left hand side as you are driving on Waukegan Rd heading toward Bannockburn. Go here for a traditional style hoagie or submarine on a fresh Gonella white submarine roll. The lunch traffic in this place is a bunch of white and blue collar guys who know how they like their subs. The ordering line is designed to move those white subs, because the small and regular size are premade with lettuce & tomato and ready for your meat choice. I had a lite tuna sub on a whole wheat roll. Don't order that. It was bland and bready. I guess regulars know to order the sub on the standard white Gonella roll. There are about 15 different sub types on the menu which come in three sizes. I have to try this place again to find out why it's rated as possibly the best sub shop on the north shore. Yummy! One of the best sub shops in the area. It kinda looks like a dive from the outside, but is actually very cute and cozy on the inside. The entrance is lined with pictures of their subs to make it easier to decide which one off their expansive menu u actually want. Good lunch spot for sure! THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!! I don't know if its the owner or just the manager. Short with dark hair. Guy could care less. They are slow as hell when its busy. Today it was busy, so it was ridiculous. Waited 15 minutes for fries. Kept giving the order to the people with larger orders. WTF!?!!??! Kept asking for my money back. He kept saying its coming. No apologies...nothing. Finally got fed up and yelled I want my f'king money back!!! Finally got it. Food is good, but they are sandwiches. They are not reinventing the wheel. Very good, fast, sub place. Kind of unimpressive from the outside, as its essentially a shack next to a gasoline station on the side of a road and some train tracks, but I was surprised. I could tell from all the nice cars in the small parking lot of the corporate lunchers ate here. The inside is small, clean, and very air conditioned (this is a good sign for a place that serves so many cold cuts). The bread is really nice and chewy, good for standing up to an italian beef or hot sandwich, but tasty enough and soft enough to be served with the standard cold, cuts, it stands up to italian dressing and oil too. Since they do good business, the bread is fresh too. While the bread really makes the sandwich, they don't skip on fillings here, which is a nice changup from "meat thin as paper" subway fast food type of subs. The "Launcher" is a nice mix of bologna-like cold cuts and its the house special. I enjoyed this place. Pricing is on par with other sub places, but you do get better bread and more meat and toppings, so i'd say its worth it. read more

I support local sandwiches, but this place is a toss up to me. Be warned the whole sub is an enormous beast definitely suitable for two people. The sub was filled to the brim with meats! I opted for the original launcher which came with cold cuts. Although the quantity was plentiful, I am pretty sure one of the meats was extremely over salted, which really destroyed my taste buds to enjoy the sandwich.
