All excellent, but it came at a $49 corkage fee before tip! Geez! When we were seated, the host made a big deal about our birthdays gave us BOTH handwritten birthday cards and told the waiter to take good care of us because we were celebrating a double birthday and seated us at a center spot at the bar, which we loved! A hit! Overall, the service and ALL the staff were great, but to be honest. some of the food was hit and miss. The menu is somewhat underwhelming. They seem to be mostly known for their deviled eggs. Okay, I love a deviled egg, but so what? Every time I'd ask anyone about Bar Cecil, they'd say, "Well. their deviled eggs are good." We should have known then, but we wanted to see for ourselves what the hype was about. It's French because they serve, escargot, steak frites, and caviar service, but it's really a bunch of different food items that aren't really cohesive -- deviled eggs with dates and sage, Thai curry muscles, smoke pork chop, cacio e pepe. WTF? The best things we had were the oysters, grilled artichokes and the Bernaise sauce on the steak frites was spot on, but the steak itself was chewy and difficult to cut with a steak knife -- a miss that could have been a hit. Not worth the price point. We also ordered the Thai curry muscles, which were really good until the last six muscles, which were sandy and gritty. Again another miss, that could have been a hit. The waiter did take them off the bill, but then at the very end of our "double birthday celebration," the waiter asked, "Are you ready for desert?" My friend responded, "Well, I'm pretty full. Is it complimentary?" And he responded, "It is, but I didn't want to ruin the surprise." So we both ordered desert -- I ordered a "special" desert that wasn't on the menu. A cookie ice cream thing and she ordered the pavlova. Mine was okay. She loved hers. Again it could have been a massive hit-- instead it was a massive miss! We were charged $27 for our two "complimentary" deserts before tax and tip! Oh well, we didn't haggle and paid our bill, but only tipped 20%. We would have tipped an extra $50-$100 because it was our birthdays and we would have tipped all the comped amounts to the wait staff, figuring we would have paid those costs plus tax and tip on top of that. Too bad. Overall, I wouldn't wait in long lines any time soon for this experience. It's was just a meh for us.

Once inside, it has such a fun Prohibition-era speakeasy feel. The atmosphere is dark, intimate, and very cool, and our bartender was fabulous and completely played along with the vibe. When I pulled out my phone to take a picture, he looked at me very seriously and said, "No pictures, please." I immediately put my phone away! Later, when our drinks arrived, I cautiously asked, "Am I allowed to take a picture of these?" He laughed and said, "Of course! I was just giving you the vibe!" We had just come from a slightly odd service experience at Workshop Kitchen (see that review!), so for a second I thought, "Oh no, here we go again!" Thankfully, not at all. I had an idea on where it was but didn't know where. That's where the 4 stars come in. As I had the door open, I could hear from the bar area a gentleman yelling out shut the door. Ok, I get the dark hidden concept but yelling out like that, kind of rude. Do you not want people in. It was about 11pm when we walked in. You enter and it's a dark hallway straight to the bar. That'll be what you see right when you walk in. Place is covered in a dark damask wallpaper and only light are small fixtures. So dark and demure. Bar area is the main attraction with all the seating. There's a few hi tops along the wall as well as some seating in the back area. I'm not sure how big the place is as we only went straight to the bar and sat down. The menu is printed to resemble vintage newspaper. The dark mysterious room with tufted seats and dim lights is what this place is all about. But of course you can't leave out the drinks. Centered of the bar wall, there's Udo Kier watching you. Anyways, down to the drinks. Printed on the newspaper was a perfect touch. I went with the pisco sour and we had the bartender make something else with mescal. An updated smoke and mirror I believe. Drinks were excellent which we expected. The whole place is really dark and mysterious which was a nice touch. It wasn't that busy when we arrived Friday night. A couple of people in the back area which we definitely could hear...lol... There was no list to get in as we just walked in. The only downfall with the rating, the rude remark when we walked in with shutting the door all the way from the bar area. Yes we heard it from outside. We almost immediately regretted that and wished we'd sat outside. This place is not made for being busy on the inside. It's just too loud. But, cute in there. Our server, who we later learned was the bartender and not a usual server, took our drink orders. A few of us ordered the Hugo spritz, one gal got a beer, and a few other cocktails were ordered. We got our drinks and they were enjoyable. The problem began when we were ordering food. One girl in our group is Celiac and literally can not eat gluten. She ordered the salmon and asked to be sure the potato salad was gluten free. If things are fried or prepared in the same place as gluten objects, she is incredibly ill for weeks afterwards. She has to be super careful. His response was, "I think so." She told him she was celiac and had a true gluten allergy, and she needed him to be sure. Meanwhile, the menu boasts about how they proudly serve gluten free options right on the bottom. He then said, "yeah, I'm pretty sure it is." He genuinely did not seem concerned. She ended up ordering it but felt uncomfortable about whether or not it was really safe for her. Another girl at the end of the table asked him to please double check, as it was really a serious allergy. He said, "Yeah I am going to ask the chef. I wasn't going to just ignore it and make all you girls mad." He had the snarkiest tone when he said it, and it was incredibly, incredibly rude. That right there gave us a bad taste in our mouths. He came back out and said he checked with the chef, and it was indeed gluten free. Food came out and all tasted good. But when a restaurant prides itself on gluten free options, and then makes it so hard to order, it's not a good look. We wouldn't be back.
