Topaz Lake is a quaint small little place. It is not south shore Lake Tahoe, or Las Vegas. Keeping this in mind, I give them a 5 star rating for many reasons. 1. There is a sign posted on the door reading "Please be nice. We are short on help. Please be kind to those who have actually shown up" Two women were working the entire steakhouse. Each handled roughly 6 tables and did all their own bartending. Wow. 2. Our server was very busy when we arrived, it took about 10 minutes to be seated at a clean table. Not bad. She really was so nice and professional. Wish I knew her name. She's an angel. 3. We immediately told her we would make it easy, we would both get the exact same thing (filet mignon med-rare) and whatever else she suggested as far as sides and so forth. She did indeed like us. 4. The place slowed down a bit after a while, and I overheard the other server talking to some other passers-through and she too was very engaging and took an interest in them also. They only hire good humans. 5. Food was exceptional! Filet mignons were huge! we thinly sliced our leftover steak to make steak sandwiches with on our 9 hour drive home the next morning. She was happy to bring a small box and some extra butter for said sandwiches for the next day. Asparagus was cooked right, as was the garlic mashed potatoes, and the french onion soup was surprisingly well made. 6. Our bill was reasonable and we over tipped our server for her exceptional service. Looks can be deceiving. Give this place a try with a relaxed open mind if you're passing on down that long 395. It's a welcomed haven.

The service was great, but the food sucks. And now they don't have any blackjack tables or three card poker tables no live dealers.

And we brought some Bay Area friends with us. We also came in mid-week to avoid any crowd potential. Our evening began at the bar with a round of Picon Punch, the official drink of the State of Nevada. I first thought that this was a drink that you only ordered once, but this small glass of goodness actually grew on us. After closing the bar bill and looking at all the branded merchandise, it was off to the main dining room. We chose the Basque Family Style side of the menu, which at the end of the evening resulted in number of take home containers. Our 4 choices were Basque Chicken, Fish, Lamb Shoulder, and Lamb Chops. Those came with Vegetable Soup, Salad, Beef Stew, Beans, French Fries, Bottle of Red Wine, Coffee, and Ice Cream. for the Table. These inclusive choices were priced just south of $40 and that's what the bill was at the end of the evening, as there were no extras needed. OK, the included wine was a little on the sweet side, but we didn't see the need to "upgrade" as we were too busy concentrating on the food. It was all good, especially the Soup and the French Fries. The only regret was not being here on the night they served Huckleberry Ice Cream, but our Vanilla or Pistachio Almond was good enough. JT Basque is family generation owned, and we certainly felt welcome and well taken care of. The rustic decor was also cool, as was the happy energy in the dining room. We promise to come back and not be strangers.

We knew it wasn't going to be crowded and the food will be fresh, but it was so much more than that. Overland is lucky to employ Tennessee, who might just be the best server in the Carson Valley. I grant you that we haven't been to every restaurant and we haven't had every server and so it could be hyperbole to try to tell you that he's the best, but we need to be sure to let you know that he is clearly in the top percentile of quality, local servers. Why you ask. He anticipated our every need, and so we always had water, always had coffee, and he cleared every single time he got near the table. His positive energy is infectious. Yes, I can hear you now, what about the food? My wife can, on occasion, high maintenance, and this was one of those mornings. She ordered the Eggs Benedict without the bottom bread plus one more whole extra Eggs Benedict, and Tennessee didn't flinch. I ordered the vegetarian omelette and I had side breakfast potatoes. All of it tasted great. I even tried the hollandaise sauce on my wife's eggs Benedict and it tasted fresh and tasty. So, I say give Tennessee a raise, and when you go to the Overland, hope that you get seated in his section because it will be an experience that you won't forget soon, and the food is very good. Somehow, this breakfast restaurant is flying under the radar on Saturdays and Sundays. They truly deserve to be packed as they have the formula for success, great service, good food, and a clean environment..

In the summer of 2025 I had the pleasure of dining here twice, and I enjoyed both of them! The first time was over Father's Day weekend when we were camping nearby with a group of friends, and this was the plan for dinner. I was not sure what to expect, but left stuffed, happy and very, very, very delightfully surprised. I enjoyed the lamb chop dinner with extra garlic sauce and crispy fries. The lamb was cooked wonderfully and the Rich garlic sauce really set this dish apart. We also had appetizers of the fried zucchini covered in fried garlic, chicken wings, fresh garden salad, and more. It was quite the spread, and every bit was delicious. I really enjoyed the friendly service here too. The kitchen can get backed up, but that's to be expected when the restaurant is full of happy groups, chatting and eating. Expect wait times to be a bit longer than you may think and just be patient. The dish that surprise me the most had to be the kids chicken tender, which was massive clearly hand, breaded, and fried to golden brown perfect perfection. These were giant pieces of chicken and way too much for the kids to eat on their own, and I was all too happy to help. Four stars because the service can lag, fried food can be greasy and somewhat soggy, and the chicken wings had great flavor but weren't cooked to a nice crisp or coated in sauce. The second time we visited this summer, we just did some appetizers and of course cocktails. You really can't go wrong here.

We were happy to linger a bit. 2. Friendly and enjoyable Bar, Table, and Buffet service. 3. The Thanksgiving Buffet was a bargain at $30 each. The sliced Turkey and Ham, Yams, Green Beans, Mashed Potatoes (with Gravy) and Roll were all very good, albeit rich overall. The Pumpkin and Pecan pies were both extra delicious, which went well with good coffee. 4. David's Kentucky Mule was strong and good going down. However, service has been a challenge during each visit. On our most recent visit, it took about 20 minutes to be seated with a party of four, including a child, even though there appeared to be open tables. After sitting down, it took several minutes before we were greeted. Our server brought waters and later took drink orders, but there wasn't much communication about timing or whether they were short staffed. Once we placed our order, we waited close to an hour for our food. We completely understand that restaurants can get busy and staffing can be tight -- we just would have appreciated a quick update along the way. A little communication goes a long way and helps set expectations. When our food arrived, part of the order was incorrect (we had requested a salad and soup substitution but only received fries). The server corrected it, and the food itself was good. It did come out at different times, and we noticed another table seated after us received their food much sooner, which was a bit confusing. We truly want to support Roy's and hope this feedback is helpful. With stronger communication and smoother service flow, it could be a great experience.

The ambiance is classic, nice, yet rustic cabin like feeling. The menu looked good and our server informed us of the specials. I decided to get the salmon and the others decided on the steak special. My guest opted for an old fashioned, which he said was one of the better tasting ones he's had. The calamari came out nice and hot. Tasting crispy and good, and tasted fresh. My salmon came out light and fresh, with amazing Brussel sprouts. My guests steaks came out perfectly cooked and flavourful. The service was impeccable and our server continued to check on our dining experience. All the staff were super friendly, which made for an amazing dinner. We came kind of late, around 8:30pm and had a party of 8, and at first they said they could not seat us but then Paula (who I assume is the manager) was able to get us in at 9:00pm and she was so kind and personable! The table and chairs we sat at were nice and study and the dining area of the restaurant was just as nice as the entrance. Our server was friendly and attentive and our wait was reasonable. Now for the negatives. Unfortunately the food was not a hit for anyone in our party. My sister-in-law got the chicken pasta and gave it a 2.5/5, she aid the chicken was overcooked, the sauce was runny, and it wasn't very flavorful. I got the Brussel Sprouts and my husband and I give them a 3/5, they were soft but not crispy and the flavor was okay. The Mac & Cheese was a 2/5 on its own but much better when we added salt/pepper, it also had no flavor but the texture was perfect. My 3 kids all got a kids pizza and they all barely ate any so I'd give another 2/5, they said they remind them of the pizza they get at school. My husband's meat pizza was also a 2/5, the crust seemed like maybe it wasn't all the way cooked & he said it tasted like a frozen pizza. My nephew gives the kids grilled cheese a 3/5. And my brother said the chicken BLT was good and he gives it a 4/5 and said he would order it again. Lastly, I ordered a wedge salad but it never came, also after I brought it to my waitresses attention she forgot to take it off the bill, but she quickly fixed it at the end and again was very kind. Unfortunately we will not be going back even though we are staying at the resort next door. We just feel for the price we would like to try other places in Tahoe instead. But I think they are worth a try if you're at the resort.
