I had lunch at Gilbert downtown and the architecture of Topo attracted me to check out their menu. One of the highlights of my visit was the prickly pear ice cream, absolutely delicious! I ordered "twist" with chocolate dip - It's a combination of vanilla and prickly pear. I highly recommend trying it as it's a unique treat you won't find everywhere. Tips - There are more seating behind Topo. It looks like a small picnic area with lot of sparrows and shades. I would definitely come back and try other menu items. read more

This was my first experience at Topo, and with a long line, one might assume the wait would be worth it. We stood in line for about 45 minutes in 100 degree weather, with my poor brother hyping up the prickly pear ice cream being worth it. I enjoy new experiences and don't mind paying or waiting, if the experience is worth it. By the time we finally got to the front, the cashier was about to pump my ice cream out of the machine, and the guy doing the "pick up" literally stepped in front of her to make two ice creams. And then, what do you know, "I'm so sorry, but our prickly pear ice cream isn't working. We just got a new machine, I don't know why it's doing this." You only serve two flavor options, and your business is ice cream, and your machine doesn't work? The point of a limited menu is to keep your line flowing smoothly and to promote your best product. The sad part is during our very long, hot wait, there were maybe 3 separate groups of people who walked by and laughingly said, "oh, they're waiting in this line for ice cream?" Yeah. After my wait for VANILLA ice cream, I do feel like we deserved to be laughed at, I certainly feel like an idiot for waiting. You would highly benefit from opening your other window to serve more customers, rather than just leaving it for "pick up". I know there's an appeal to a long line, but when it's for vanilla soft serve, absolutely not. It's most certainly not the employee's fault, but I'll never get that time or money back, so I will not be returning. read more

It was a Monday night...it was cool outside and I was hungry. I had just gotten a haircut and my stomach was feeling neglected, I had to change that. As I sat in my Jeep, deep in thought, I glanced to my right and saw the words "burrito" and "soft server" written like bookends on a tiny white building called "Topo." I thought: "I'd hit that," and decided to introduce myself.... Spoiler Alert: I went for the bean and cheese burrito....both myself and my stomach loved it! It had the perfect consistency of beans and cheese (to my liking that is). I never would have thought this tiny place had one of the best bean and cheese burritos around. Topo is an iconic roadside architecture in downtown Gilbert. They serve grab-n-go style burritos, street corn, and soft serve ice cream with unique dipping options. There's a few picnic tables available to enjoy your treats. I've tried the prickly pear soft serve dipped in lime as well as the elote. I was very impressed with both! Although I typically don't opt for tart flavors, I was urged to try the prickly pear - and I'm glad I did! The soft serve was a delightful and refreshing summer treat. The elote was creamy and flavorful. It has roasted corn, tomatillo crema, cilantro, cotija cheese, and chile powder. Service was fast and friendly. Flavorful, filling, refreshing. LOVED the elote bowls (all the goodness with none of the fuss), and the brisket really took it over the top and added a lot of heartiness to the meal. The prickly pear dipped cone was also a highlight. Topo: It means gopher in Spanish. After having had a delicious Taco Tuesday meal across the street, the Topo-fanatics of the table pointed out that we *had* to go to Topo for dessert. What did this roadside stand have to do with dessert? Why was there a gopher on top with laser eyes? And why was Joyce W. talking about burritos? All this was answered when we responsibly used the crosswalk and made out way over. I ordered the Topo Loco Burrito (pork or chicken with beans, elote, Fritos, hot sauce, cilantro, cheese, and tomatillo crema) with pork for my lunch the next day and a prickly pear soft serve with lime dip. After having the soft serve last night and the burrito today for lunch, I get it. While the Fritos didn't survive the slumber party in the fridge and then being nuked in the microwave, I can imagine it being delicious when eaten fresh. As for the soft serve, it's bliss. Any time you can get soft serve ice cream is a treat and with a fun desert flavor like prickly pear, you just can't go wrong. If you're in DT Gilbert and you don't stop for a soft serve, what are you even doing? It's $3.50 for the soft serve and $0.50 for the dip. Just do it! read more

How did I just find out about this place? Nestled next to Joes BBQ in downtown Gilbert, is a giant beaver with glowing eyes. Not sure how the animal relates to the food, but this place is unique and serves some delicious quick Mexican food and soft serve. I tried the classic elote-corn, cheese, and a white sauce with a kick of spice. This Gringa loved it. Next, I tried the vanilla/prickly pear swirl soft serve. It reminded me of the lifesavers berries and cream candy of my childhood. So good! Our friends got the prickly pear with lime hard shell on top, reminiscent of rainbow sherbet. They also got a brisket and elote burrito, which looked amazing. This is a walk up restaurant without indoor seating-but you can sit in Joes next door, which is perfect. Can't wait to go back. The prickly pear ice cream was absolutely delicious. I did the mix but next time i onky want the prickly pear. I also got the hardshell white chocolate lime & dod not care for it. I was expecting more of a lime flavor. I definitely would be back. Parking is not easy to find, but there is a parking garage a street over & behind in the neighborhood that may be best option gor parking since there is no parking infront on the main street & limited spots in the back. We chose to do the 15 min parking on the side street & take away. They do have an area you can chill & eat outdoors in right next to it. The service was good and fast but I was very disappointed in the brisket burrito. The cheese and green salsa was lumped on one side and there was maybe 1oz of brisket in there. The food is reasonable. Especially for downtown Gilbert, where so many chains don't seem to be familiar with seasoning or flavor. However, the service at Topo has been lacking on my past three visits. One time we waited in line for over ten minutes only to be told that they were ending service after we reached the window. Another time, I waited at the window actively while the employees had a conversation. This is typical of quick service food, and I wouldn't be disappointed if it took a moment for them to acknowledge me. But I waited for three whole minutes for them to even notice me and open the window. No apology was offered. Today, I gave them another chance. There was quite a long line again due to the dinner rush, but the employees were laid back to an extent that presented as boredom or lacking care. Almost all of the orders in front of me were solely soft serve, which one would expect to have a quick turnaround. The line moved exceptionally slow, and the person working the hot line was mostly sitting around and not involved in fulfilling orders. When I finally got to the window, I ordered a burrito and the special soft serve. I asked if my four year old - who had waited in line the entire time with me - could have the tiniest extra portion of the prickly pear in a separate bowl, which she was begging for. The employee said yes and suggested that she would just charge me for an additional soft serve. I indicated that I didn't want a whole order, just a miniscule amount. However, she insisted that they weren't able to make an exception. The ensuing meltdown aside, this felt unprofessional given the situation. I was paying for over $15 of food and would happily sacrifice some portion of the volume of the other soft serve to have what I wanted, if for some reason cost was the concern. I hope the ten cents in savings was worth it to the company for a one star review. I expect them to incorporate a sense of awareness and urgency during rushes and train their employees to elevate the service they offer to the customer. read more

What a treat! This cute little walk up spot dishes out soft serve ice cream, burritos and elote. A simple and straight forward menu with a small and casual outdoor space it's a great choice for a quick bite. I have only tried their prickly pear-vanilla twist soft serve dipped in lime white chocolate ( recommended by the cashier), it was such a unique and nice flavor, not something I would always get, as it leans more towards the sweet verse tart side, but a great flavor and nice treat when in the area or craving arises. I have yet to try the burrito or elote, but really look forward to having the full experience one of these days. My first time having prickly pear soft serve, and I really enjoyed it. Not sure what I was fully getting into, so I got the prickly pear soft serve mixed with vanilla. I'm so glad I did that because the prickly pear is pretty tart. The vanilla really balanced it out. The prickly pear reminded me a lot of boysenberry. I really liked it. They give quite a bit of soft serve. There was a short line, but it moves by quickly. We stopped for soft serve, I have the prickly pear dipped in chocolate, our friend the twist with PP and vanilla and my daughter had the vanilla. We popped by one night during our visit to Phoenix and got the brisket esquite and the prickly pear soft serve. The service was very quick and the staff were friendly! There is an outdoor eating area but we took our items to go. The prickly pear soft serve is sooooo good. Nice and tart but also sweet. Great creamy texture! The ONLY down side about this place is the downtown parking. It's a pain to find something, and if you want to actually stay and eat its even harder because of the 15 minute parking spots. read more

Unique! Unique! Unique! Having had burritos from all over Topos is one of a kind! Getting their meat from their sister restaurant next store Joe's Real Bbq. You can't go wrong with anything you order. Always spring from the Topo Loco if you can! Pro tip, order it as a Bowl for the kiddos if they don't like burritos. The flabors are fresh, their is diversity in textures and flavors all wrapped up in a tortilla. Having been a few times now they are very consistent with quality no matter time of day. And when your finished get back in line and grab a special seasonal soft serve! They do share an outdoor patio with Joe's Real BBQ, so if its too hot or too cold outside feel free to take that burrito inside! The lawn outside has a few yard games such as corn hole and ping pong making it a great place to take the whole family. read more

The prickly pear tartness was balanced by the vanilla and was a great pairing. It was a large serving in a classic sugar cone. Perfect for a warm afternoon. You order at a walk-up window. The line moves fast and we got our ice cream right after ordering. The person who served our ice cream was very friendly. We sat out by the picnic tables with the grass. First of all, you have to be humored by the large mole-like character who serves as the business' logo. From afar I could see that they offered soft serve ice cream as well as Mexican food. I thought a soft serve would be a nice dessert so headed over there after our meal. Note that they only take credit cards, no cash! It is posted on the window. I got the prickly pear/vanilla twist with a lime dip based on the staff recommendation. It was good and filling. Next time I would just get the twist with no dip. The dip turned so hard I felt like I needed a hammer to get to the good stuff. There are tables and chairs outside to sit and enjoy your meal or dessert. It is on the main street so can be noisy. My kiddo and I were across the street at a restaurant and couldn't pass up the opportunity for ice cream at this fun looking place! Very eye catching Topo! We went for the basic vanilla dipped in chocolate and it was delightful on a warm day! We enjoyed the tables and scenery. this spot used to be SO good and the last few times I have been so disappointed that I am questioning whether to come back or not. :( First of all, the staff were nice but also not considerate. We had ordered two topo loco bowls with chicken. BUT instead of maybe taking an easy ice cream order or two before working on our bowls; which I would have understood...they took and completed 4 BEFORE working on ours which we found unfair. :( To top it all off...both of our bowls were so unsatisfying and infilling. Our bowl was half filled and mostly beans and minimal chicken and even less Elote. not sure what happened but it was not the same. Despite the mediocre bowls we did opt to finish the meal off like usual with a sweet treat so we got their current special; the s'mores. It was not my favorite of their specials...they just skimped on the toppings and the cone tasted a bit stale. :( Again, this used to be an easy favorite in DT Gtown. On this visit, I got a Topo Loco burrito (pork or chicken with beans, elote, Fritos, hot sauce, cilantro, cheese, and tomatillo crema) with pork. It was so good and so filling. I love the heat, the sweetness from the corn, and the crunchiness from the Fritos. It was cheesy, it was tasty, and it was everything you want from a burrito complete with a sexy foil ensemble you get to peel away. It's not a traditional burrito by any means but I just find myself so gosh darn impressed with this burrito. The flavors are balanced and the texture from the Fritos were really nice. I find myself daydreaming about this burrito right now as I type this review. I wanted to try the prickly pear ice cream afterwards but the line was a mile long by the time we were finished with lunch. I guess that means I just have to pop in again soon. It's a walk-up stand right off of Gilbert Road. They have plenty of picnic bench seating in the back where you can enjoy your meal. Such a great small place. I ordered the topo loco with chicken it was so good it was spicy and tasty, it had corn and even frittos. I have not had a burrito in a long time. I flew in to Phoenix from San Antonio. My best friend loves this place. The service is great fast very busy little spot. I even got to try the prickly pear, ice cream dipped in lime. I think the worst part of traveling is finding places that you really really wish you could enjoy at home. If TOPO wants to expand to Albuquerque, I wouldn't complain. I went for the prickly pear dipped in lime and honestly, I wish I would have just gotten the cone sans dip because it was a little harder to eat with my braces. The soft serve is like no other though. AMAZING. The patio area is super cute and a fun spot to just chill. The perfect warm weather treat.
