This place had some unique tacos and delicious queso. We got the chorizo, egg and cheese breakfast taco; trailer park (dirty) taco; crossroads taco; and green chile queso. Everything was pretty good. Crossroads taco was my favorite. I love grilled onions and jalapenos, and this was a delicious combo over beef brisket. The trailer park was supposed to have a fried chicken filling, but it tasted more like a chicken tender. We got it covered in cheese, which of course makes everything taste better. Chorizo breakfast taco was pretty basic. Each taco was about 1.5x of a street taco and pretty filling. I'm glad we tried out this place before we left as we don't have a ton of TexMex in LA, and these tacos were pretty good. read more

It's Torchy's. The tacos are great. The queso is great. They have beer! What's not to like. As a previous resident of Austin, discovering that there was a Torchy's in Dallas while I was visiting was awesome. The only thing keeping this place from getting my normal 5-star rating for Torchy's is that my crossroads (brisket) taco wasn't nearly as good as I'm used to. The brisket was tough enough that I wound up essentially pulling the entire inside of the taco out by accident on my second bite because it was all one big, tough piece of brisket as opposed to the normal delicious, juicy, tender bits. Maybe it was just a bad day. My usual recommendations about torchy's: 1. Get the taco of the month! The habanero shrimp and hot fajita beef (barn burner) ones were happening at the time and were great. 2. The queso is amazing and has avocado all over the middle of it. Must have. 3. If you can, order it for there because the to-go tacos tend to be about half the size. 4. My favorite tacos are the brush fire (spicy chicken) and crossroads (smokey beef brisket) read more

I love Torchy's! Always a guaranteed great experience. I like the Democrat (barbacoa + avocado) and the Dirty Sanchez (a breakfast taco) and they are well done here. The meat is well flavored, the eggs cooked nice and fluffy. The street corn could use a bit more of a kick, but I like that they don't overload the cheese on anything at this location. Wonderful. Service: came in here on a Sunday around 6pm to a pretty full space, but while we awaited in line, a table cleared up so my party of 3 took that spot. After ordering and coming back to the table, it still wasn't cleaned up from past customers. The tortilla is twice the size. I spent 50$ here tonight and I have had it with torchy's going worse and worse with their quality and portions. This always happens with the trailer park taco too. Absolutely love Torchy's, but this particular Torchy's seems to be hit and miss when it comes to quantity consistency. In Austin, and even in other locations in Dallas, Torchy's seems to always give a generous amount of food, so much so that you're pretty darn full after finishing your meal. However, the last time I came to this location, it seems like only half of my order got this treatment. One taco (Green Chili pork) seemed extremely stuffed -- perfect. The other (Brush Fire) seemed like it was practically empty, and the difference was especially stark since they were sitting in the same basket. Odd. Flavor and quality of the tacos were still excellent, but one star off for being having inconsistent portion sizes. read more

When visiting other Texas cities, this is our favorite Taco shop to dine in at because unlike in Houston, places like Austin and Dallas they have Torchy's everywhere and not just in the areas where rich white people live. Which is a major plus! The restaurant was brightly red with all kinds of red decor and lights which screams Torchy's devil delicious tacos. I ordered the brushfire, ranch hand, and my favorite trailer park trash extra trashy. All was delicious except for the brushfire, which never stated in the menu that it had a hint of ginger or that the meat was cooked with ginger which made the taco taste nasty with a soapy flavor. The jerk chicken, mangos, cilantro, white ranch sauce, and peppers just didn't pair well for my liking.. Also, the sauces I received for the ranch hand and trailer park trash was extremely spicy and even burnt my tongue. Now the cashier wasn't friendly nor seemed like she wanted to serve me. I asked with southern hospitality, "hello, how are you?" and she immediately asked me what I wanted, but first of all you didn't answer my question......pretty awkward huh? Overall - mediocre tacos and it was a bigger disappointment due to the hype from referrals from others. Im just hoping that we visited a very poorly run branch. We got the Baja shrimp, carne asada, and brushfire and they were all average at best. Wouldn't come back here given the number of alternatives for Tex mex tacos. Pros - the manga salsa on the brushfire provided some moisture along with some bright flavors. The sauce condiments on the side for each of the tacos were good, especially the carne asada. It had a great chipotle flavor. Cons - the tortilla for the carne asada taco was so old and dry that some parts of crumbling as we picked it up, and some parts were extremely difficult to bite off. It was rubberish and dry beyond anything. All of the meats were chewy and dry, and I couldn't taste the shrimp at all in its heavy, mediocre batter. I've had so many good shrimp tacos over the weekend and this one can't even hold up to any of them. By far the worst piece. read more

My friends and I headed over to Torchy's after studying for a final for a few hours. We had a feeling that it would be packed because of Cinco De Mayo, but to our surprise, it was not overly crowded. With this in mind, it was especially disappointing that it took so long to get our food. I am super picky when it comes to mexican food and tacos and such. So I ordered a half-sized queso to split with my friends. Between the three of us we had queso, guacamole, and street corn. Out of our appetizers, I would order the street corn again. It was delicious. However, I was not blown away by the guacamole or the queso. My friends ordered entrees and I munched on the apps. For dessert, I ordered the nookies (an order of three) for us to share. I am not sure what I was expecting but they were really good! It is basically deep fried cookie dough. The outside was sweet and crunchy and the inside was chocolately and gooey. We each got to try one. My biggest complaint was the second dessert I ordered to split with my friends: the brownie. This came in a prepackaged container and the outside read, "serve warm with ice cream." I think they should have served this warm... and with ice cream. Then maybe I wouldn't be upset. Ha! Perfect for the College Crowd. Like a Fuzzy's/Yabo's but not Velvet. Previously visited the Fort Worth location many times, but the SMU location is equally good. This is not a fancy place but does provide an indoor - outdoor bar area for patrons to sit around a little bar area and watch TV or talk with friends. Full service bar. Torchy's is a simple, Chipotle type approach. Stand in line, order from menu above, and take your drinks and number to your table. Tacos are great tasting and you have a lot of choices. We tried the Wrangler, Trailer Park, Baja Shrimp, and a few breakfast tacos. Everything tasted great. Not sure why, but this location wasn't as clean and crisp as the Fort Worth location (drink area and bathrooms clutter and not clean). We enjoyed the people and the food, but it just didn't appear to be super smooth running. If you are in the area and want a quick breakfast taco or taco treatment, stop here for carryout. Wrangler and Trailer Park are must try items, and please make sure you order it "Trashy" (extra stuff and makes the tacos). read more

I was a little skeptical when reading the negative reviews of this location as sometimes people with negative reviews are biased or are maybe having a bad day. That is not the case for this location. I called in my order so I could grab it quickly and get back to work. Even though there was only 1 person in front of me, it took 12 minutes for the cashier to get to me as it seemed like they were short staffed. I've been a fan of the chain since college but when I ordered this month's "Taco of the Month", as is tradition with my wife and I, I was surprised to find after I got home that it was missing half of the fillings that was in that particular order and felt as if it was poorly put together. I was also surprised to find that in my "Democrat" taco there was a LIME WEDGE inside my second bite (instead of on the side). This location has poor quality control and customer service and I would definitely recommend the Torchys head office take a look at this place and make some changes. First time at Torchy's! It's a Dallas staple, so don't delay like I did... I got the Fried Chicken and the Democrat (barbacoa). (Total: ~$9). They give you a number and they bring the food out to you. Fast casual. Mine came out almost the second I sat down. So super fast casual. I was a little suspect, but I'm sure they prepare everything already and scoop it up when people order. The size of the taco was VERY generous that it was hard to eat. I was full with two, but I could've eaten another one. It gives me Velvet Taco vibes, but less uppity. (Don't get me wrong - I love Velvet too!)
