This restaurant came highly recommended from several friends. We decided to try it one night. We were not disappointed. Service is outstanding. We were a party of 8 and several people among us had food allergies. The waitress was very attentive to our special requests and warned us which dishes had the specific allergens. Our water glasses were never empty for long periods and the waitress stopped in to check on frequently so we had everything we needed within minutes. Our waitress was also very accommodating and created a special assortment of desserts for all of us to share. Food was delicious and portions are large. Perhaps I was expecting too much. The food is okay, and I'm sure I could cook better food at home. I came expecting to share authentic turkish food with a friend, and I was very disappointed, and even embarrassed. The seasoning is waay off. My friend ordered the Hunkar Begendi, which was extremely bland and chewy. The eggplant puree that came with it had barely any seasoning. I ordered the Iskender Kabab, which had more soggy bread than meat. The bread is meant to be sautéed, not just left there to steep in tomato sauce. As for the bread that is served that I see people raving about, save yourself time and money. Go to AK Market on Crooks Ave in Paterson and buy a loaf fresh for about $1.30. Or even Corrodo's in Clifton, put it in a toaster, and there you go. There was nothing impressive about this place, although the decor is nice, and the service is decent. read more

Great meal. It was like being back in Istanbul. The decor is very authentic from what I recall in Istanbul. The service was very good- maybe a little rushed. The food was simple but really well prepared. We started off with cold appetizer platter; Hummus, Babbaqunush, garlic yogurt, Eggplant salad, spicy vegetable and kidney beans. They were all very good. Spread over fresh delicious Turkish bread. For main courses our group had, chicken kabobs that were moist and tasty, Doner (veal) that was just perfectly cooked. We also had the lamb chops and shish kabob that was very good. The main dishes came with two different types of rice with spices. For dessert we tried several items, the best was the baklava. Also liked the walnut pudding. The rice pudding was just OK. The bread and baklava were from the bakery across the street which is open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. I've been here probably more than 5 times over the last two years, and I think it's a winner! The shepherd salad is great, get the feta on it. Love the stuffed cabbage, kebabs, grape leaves...everything is presented very beautifully, and tastes just like I think it should. My family is Syrian, which is slightly different but has a similar flavor profile. I've brought my non-Arabic boyfriend here and he still talks about the meal we had here! Only con, in my opinion is that the prices are somewhat higher than I would expect a small restaurant in Clifton on a crappy road to be. Not crazy high, but not exactly befitting the neighborhood. We booked the place for our daughter's christening party, having decided after eating here a few times that this would be an ideal venue. A large hall downstairs, very reasonable pricing, and pleasant hosts sealed it for us. On that day, we had the entire hall to ourselves, and we needed it, as my son decided to run laps around the empty tables. The food was excellent, and it was a good bit of culture shock to my family, who are primarily Polish and Italian. At it's core, it's still meat and rice and peppers, so everyone was surprised they liked it and how much of it they ate. I don't think it's typical for Christians to book a Turkish venue for a christening party, but we were treated really well, and it's only now as I think of it that it might've been considered strange or even problematic. I suppose I'm only mentioning it in case you have any misgivings. Don't. There was one aspect we'd have changed. They felt the need to fill the background with Turkish music, and well, it wasn't very good Turkish music. I think silence would have been better, but in all it was such a minor point. Honestly, I was a little disappointed. I was recommended this place by a co-worker and figured I'd show up early on a Saturday to avoid possible traffic. Unfortunately, their menu is extremely limited during lunch and a lot of the stuff which makes this place noteworthy isn't available. For the most part, the stuff offered to me as available was salad, some cold tomato dish, and a kabob with rice. Honestly, I asked for the waiter to omit the salad because I knew I would waste it, but I guess because it was my first time there he decided to be insistent. Making it so, for the most part, I ate the bread until the kabob and rice came out. Which was good, but I was a bit disappointed. Between the reviews here, the place's notoriety, and my co-worker's recommendation, I was expecting something orgasmic. Unfortunately, what I was left with was decent tasting meat, but nothing that couldn't be found at a different restaurant or even a street vendor. I've been here a couple of times over the years and I am impressed with the food but the service could use improvement Food: 4 Stars The Hummus is good but not the best I have ever had. No major complaints though. Very good portion I usually have the chicken Kebab when I come here and it is very tender and flavorful. The rice and other accoutrements with the dish accent the meal well You must have their Turkish coffee. It is rocket fuel in a cup. I couldn't sleep for 2 days because of it. It is as thick as cement with enough sugar to make you think you can charge through a wall LOL Service: 2 and a half stars: Food is usually brought out promptly but the wait staff definitely makes you feel rushed. Always on the lookout to try new cuisines, we received an advertisement for Toros in the mail. Turkish--something not often found around here. So, we took the kids out for dinner tonight (May 19, 2007) to check them out. The first thing you notice is the (mandatory?) valet parking. Their parking area is small so it makes sense that they would prefer to manage it with valet parking. I had called ahead to reserve our table and when we arrived we were seated promptly. The decor is nice--it has a lot of character, but not overly kitschy. Turkish cuisine is typical Mediterranean: Turkish, Greek, Middle-Eastern, etc. are all very similar. You'll find plenty of familiar dishes, but a bunch that are uniquely Turkish. We were in for quite a treat! We ordered two appetizers: the stuffled mussels (cold dish) and the fried veal liver (hot dish). I wasn't terribly impressed by the mussels, but the fried veal liver--it was fantastic. We ordered three entrees: one was lamb cubes over eggplant sauce, one was the broiled striped bass, and the last was beef dumplings. All three dishes were incredibly good--some of the most well-prepared dishes I've had. The prices are extremely reasonable--$4-6 for an appetizer, $10-15 for an entree and the portion sizes are very generous. If you're looking to try a different cuisine and you'd like to try Turkish, I highly recommend Toros Restaurant in Clifton, NJ. read more

I had the lunch special which consists of 3 courses $11.99. Lentil soup, out of this world, delicious tabbouleh & you better not even try the bread because you won't be able to stop eating it. My coworker & I both had the chicken kabob entree & she proclaimed the rice so good she wanted to roll in it. I'd have agree & I don't even like rice that much. Loved this place! I recently went here with a group of co-workers (St.Joe's Nurses!) for a birthday dinner. Being that we work only a few blocks from this place I was excited to try one of the restaurants near the hospital. I was missing out this whole time!! Toro's has great atmosphere and very accommodating wait staff! We were a party of 9 and were seated in an area that wasn't completely separate from the rest of the restaurant but felt very intimate. Before I go any further let me say this: Get the Sangria. I repeat, get the sangria. We shared plates of delicious falafel, hummus, Babaganoush and a spinach dish I can't remember the name of cause after one bite my ability to speak was erased. Since we were full on appetizers we split I think 6 kabob platters, this was more than enough food and some people even took home leftovers. The highlight of the night? When all was said and done, with appetizers, food, drinks, tax, tip AND paying for the birthday girl we each walked away paying only $40 each! First time trying this Turkish restaurant. Overall, it is OK. Not the best for sure. We ordered Midye Tava (mussels), and it was terrible. Shepherd's salad is tasty. For our main entree's, we ordered Cop Sis (small lamb shish kebab), as well as the mixed grill platter. Everything was delicious, except for the adana kebab, which was average. Went here with my honey for dinner the other night & shared an appetizer & a combination platter for less than $40. Their starter bread is so delicious, I have no idea what they do with it, but it makes my mouth water just thinking about it right now. It's warm, soft, pulls apart easily and just a great delight in for the taste buds. We started off with their falafel as our appetizer & I wasn't a big fan ... it was overcooked so it tasted burnt and it made me wish I had just stuck to eating the starter bread. We ordered a fragrant-smelling combination platter to share based on recommendations from neighboring diners and it was HUGE, this platter came with: rice, adana kebab, shish kebab, chicken kebab & doner kebab. The shish kebab & chicken kebabs won me over, but I found the adana & doner kebab to be too gamy for my liking (I'm generally not a fan of anything gamy), but the honey really liked it! Our servers were extremely nice to us & paid us the right amount of attention without being overbearing (then again, I like to think we deserve pats for being fantastic & un-demanding customers too). We've eaten there several times and also at the Toros in New Milford. While both are great, we like the old bar setting at the Clifton location. It's smaller and a little crowded, but more warm and cozy. Wait staff is friendly and efficient. The food is great, too, and the portions are generous. There are the usual kabob combinations, but several typical Turkish preparations, too. Lamb dishes there are especially good - the lamb is always tender, not tough or stringy. The manti are a favorite of mine - big portion of the little dumplings in yogurt sauce. Good appetizers and desserts, too. read more

We were already hungry and got excited about getting some tasty Turkish food. I opened Yelp on my phone and saw 4 others suggesting Toros. We had recently come back from Turkey and had loved the food there so we wanted the same flavors and tastes we fell I love with. The place was packed on a Sunday at 5:30 pm and the hostess was very eager to accommodate us. Once seated the waitress was extremely attentive and got myself my much craved elma chay ( apple tea) and my husband got Efes, the Turkish beer. You get a big basket of bread, but don't fill up on it. The portions are huge. We split a small chopped salad and really 4 people could have eaten that. My husband got the chicken kebabs with yogurt and I got the chicken sotte. His kebabs were so delicious and huge. We could easily have split that to save room for dessert. Mine was delicious as well and it was a dish that reminded me of Cappadocia. I am without a doubt going back there. Now I know how to save room for dessert! An awesome little Turkish spot with superb lunch specials! I came here with my boyfriend recently for lunch and some friends, it was such a delight! The restaurant has many Turkish themes throughout, very ornamental and authentic decor. They also have a full bar which is a plus in any situation! We were seated promptly and had come specifically for their lunch specials which we had heard about. For $12.99 they offered a full entree which included unlimited pita, really good pita I may add, as well as either a large bowl of soup or salad, plus a large entree. My boyfriend chose the donor kabob which was actually superb. Very tender and tasty meat with a side of rice, bulgar, and a stewed tomato. I chose the adana kabob which was also excellent. Nice looking but the food just isn't great. Entrees not even good. For appetizers we had patlican salatasi (eggplant salad), palican soslu (sauteed eggplant with other pepper, etc.), both ok but very subtle in flavor, and arnavut cigeri - fried liver cubes, which was very good. Entrees were Hunkar begendi and Iskander kebab. Both of these were major disappointments. The hunkar begendi, baked chunks of lamb on eggplant puree - there was little lamb which didn't much matter because the cubes were so overcooked they were dry and tough. And had virtually no flavor of lamb. Just dry, tough little cubes of indeterminate meat. The eggplant puree was essentially thick white sauce with some eggplant with little flavor. The Iskander kebab was a plate with yogurt on one side and the doner and bread cubes on the other (rather than a flavored layered dish as we have always seen it). The doner was dry and tough. The bread cubes were tasty though. There are so many terrific Turkish and Arabic restaurants in the immediate area it is a shame to waste a meal here ! read more

I called and placed an order for 4 gyro platters. When I picked them up and brought them home I was disgusted before I even opened them. All 4 gyros had so much fat in it that it was disgusting. My family and I couldn't eat them. I been ordering from this place for so many years so I thought maybe their chef changed. When I called to ask they told me their chef is the same and they couldn't do anything about it. I asked to speak to the manager and they told me he was busy. I am very disappointed from toros.
