Toshi Sushi is so good! We started out with ordering the shumai, karaage, crispy rice, and some sushi and then kept ordering more and more because everything was just so delicious. The appetizers were hand made with lots of care and attention, and the sushi was the best sushi I've had in the South Bay. It was fresh but also so affordable and so much food! New spot where the Painter's Tape used to be! The highlight of the meal was definitely the sashimi, super fresh and really high quality. Reminded me of what I could get in Japan. The chawanmushi (light steamed egg custard) was also delicious, and not always common to have at restaurants - a nice treat! Impressed. Typically i don't leave reviews considering if i like it I'll simply return but i was extremely impressed. Loved how much consideration they took to care for my takeout order. Rolls were wrapped into plastic versus put directly into box. Everything i like with my meal was packed: soy sauce, wasabi, ginger, chopsticks and wet naps. Rolls were bite sized! Unfortunately wasnt able to try the food, but the service was severely lacking. Was "greeted" in a short manner and was kind of rushed. The restaurant was at like 20% capacity, but i think a big party was making their way in. We sat there for 20 or so minutes and nobody came to ask us questions or take our order. It seemed like they actively walked around us and avoided eye contact. When we were leaving without ordering, i tried giving them back their menu but they still passively avoided us. I never experienced this in a restaurant in my life. This will be my first and probably only review. Toshi Sushi is a MUST visit. Came here for a large 300$ two plate to celebrate the birth of my niece. Order that was stuffed to the brim with delicious sashimi, spicy tuna rolls, salmon nigiri and uni (UNI WAS INCLUDED FOR FREE) as well as complimentary utensils ice packs, soy sauce, and trays. Don't expect that to be a recurring theme, but it was obvious that the chef, Toshi is passionate, skilled and knows his shit. His employees included walked with me TO MY CAR ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LOT to help me with my order. To be honest, I don't even like sushi that much, but it was all so fresh, so delicious and a huge hit with the family. It was served on a plate with nothing else. No lemon wedge, no daikon, no cucumber, no radish. Like to taste the fish types separately so disassembled the roll. Fish didn't seem as fresh as I'm used to. Tried this place once before. I've tried pretty much every sushi place in SLO, Atascadero, and Paso. Was hoping it would be a new regular stop, but it won't be. Wait staff was attentive and prompt. Small venue so tables quite close together, a bit noisy. This place was very nice for a date and really had a genuine classic JA homey feel to the place, especially all the careful touches in the bathroom which is very charming and speaks to convenience and comfort. The menu is written by hand, kinda sloppy in my opinion, no explanation, no photos just some doodles. So be prepared if you're not familiar. I honestly didn't know what i was getting after ordered, just merely guessing but i like surprises so whatever. Sushi piece is $4 each. EACH. Even smelt egg! Price is super high compared to other local sushi joints like sushi sumo or crazy rocking sushi down the street. Servers are nice but forgetful, I waited and waited for my sauce then ended up going to the counter to ask for it again. Still the food are mediocre and not worth the high price in my opinion. I was a little hesitant when you first pull up since it's a very small facility and the parking isn't that great. All that changed when I sat down. Glad I found this place! Great selection and value, with tempting specials. The Chirashi was one the best I've had for under $50, and it cost less than $30. Not huge but a good variety of fish that was all high quality and fresh. I've had fried shishito peppers a hundred times, but never with sesame and katsuobushi flakes sprinkled on top - delicious! I will definitely add this to the list of places I want to visit when I'm in the area.
