A great local diner to fit all your diner needs! This was a super cute stop on the way home from a cold hike - it warmed our bodies and hearts :) We started with a hot chocolate because we were so cold. I definitely haven't had a hot chocolate with so much whipped cream before!!! As we were getting served (after ordering), they came out with a HUGE cinnamon roll that the other table ordered - it looked absolutely delectable. But anyways, on the same note, our food came in a huge portion; it was so much more than we expected. Of all the things, what stood out to me was the omelette. While it was a simple cheese omelette, I can't even describe how cheesy it was. Totem is definitely a local staple. Not somewhere you should eat at too often if you value blood moving unrestricted through your veins but still great. Place is cute and always has fun notes on the sign outside. The food is good, nothing different than any other decent diner but my big issue is how oily everything is. First time in for quite some time and it was definitely packed with the lunch crowd! We put our name on the list and were seated in about ten minutes, the service was friendly and knowledgeable. The ambiance is relaxed like a classic diner, the wait staff were all kept very busy but seemed to manage decently. The Eggs Benedict was not as expected, the sauce is very cheesy tastings rather than buttery, and the O'Brien potatoes are very hearty. The fried clams were cooked perfectly, and the waffle fries excellent. Got there close to noon and there was still quite a wait(weekends in general be prepared for 30-1hr wait). There were 4 of us and we were told 30 minutes. Luckily they overshot and it was maybe 10. The menu here can be daunting if you do not know what you want. Mostly everything I have ever had here is good. This time I ordered the shrimp po boy. This was the first time I can say I did not enjoy the meal. It was dry and needing a bit more sauce and veggies. I have ordered many different things here and I was bound to be satisfied just once. My wife ordered the eggs Benedict and my sister ordered the Patty melt and chicken strips for the niece. The fries are always great and like I said it was a first that I wasn't a fan of what I ordered. The Benedict and Patty melt are solid choices just as an fyi. The portions are large and the price is reasonable. Probably one of the best breakfasts in town. The seating is tight, and the restaurant has a very family feel. If I knew how to waitress I would want to work here because it felt like you were at Cheers (tv show). Everyone knew everyone's name, the waitresses and waiter were super friendly. They had their regular customers, they knew what they wanted to order. It was just great, the food was delicious but you need to get there early cause it gets crazy busy there. So no photo this time but suffice it to say that the presentation was not the problem with this visit. But I can definitely tell that the days of getting plates of hot food out of kitchens anywhere has definitely come to an end and is one of the biggest reasons why the restaurant industry struggles with return customers. I used to come to this restaurant a lot when my son was first born and the atmosphere back then was so much more homey and everyone was treated like family but like the legend of the hot food, I'm afraid this to will no longer be found anywhere either. Quaint environment and not much space yet just enough to seat a decent crowd. Puts you in the mind of those 70's diner type vibe. We visited Totem Family Dining based on the reviews here on Yelp and I couldn't be happier to add another 5* review. We were greeted warmly by Cheri (who also served us) and seated within moments of walking through the door. We didn't need coffee and the cups were quickly removed and replaced with water glasses. We took about five minutes to decide on our meal and the server came shortly after we put our menus to the side. Our juices arrived within a minute or so. I think they're standard from-concentrate fare, but still tasted good and matched the meal well. The grapefruit was especially welcome - it was sweetened to the point where it didn't have a bitter edge but not cloyingly sweet. It paired really well with our heavier dishes. Food took about ten minutes to arrive and was in the pass less than fifteen seconds before it was picked up for delivery. My eggs Benedict was good but not the best I've had. The hollandaise sauce could've used a touch more lemon but still tasted good. The hashbrowns could have been cooked a bit more, but were done enough to thoroughly enjoy. The European French toast was divine through: the bread was thick, soft, and chewy with the top/bottom crunch and well toasted. The seasoning was perfect and the crunchy almonds on top paired well with the dish. The side of bacon was thick and well cooked - crunchy but not burned. It's hard to cook bacon perfectly for everyone but I think they found a safe, balanced middle ground. About five minutes into our meal, the server checks on our experience and drops off the bill, "There's no rush, but here's your check whenever you're ready." Perfect diner handling. We finish our meal, put a card out, and a different server picks it up and runs it within a minute as our server is busy handling her other tables. Our tab was about $45 before tip. We've been coming here for many years and everything is always great. Huge and delicious portions, friendly staff, great service, and really clean. Get there early for breakfast because it can get busy. Parking on both sides of the building and along the street behind the building. When we got there, my food wasn't ready yet, so I waited in the front of the restaurant. They do have dine in right now, and when I was there Sunday late morning, the wait time to get seated was 35 minutes, so it was busy. They have put up dividers for COVID, but the restaurant isnt that big. Once we got home with my to go order, I dug right in and it was pretty tasty! Their hollandaise sauce was delicious. This place defines the word good service! It's tiny inside with parking on either side of the restaurant, so it doesn't matter what side you approach the restaurant. The food here was one of the best breakfast-wise. The loaded french toast was good. Wasn't expecting it to come with bacon and eggs, but it did, so it made the food portion sizing amazing. Two waitresses will bring out multiple plates together so everyone at the table gets their meals at the same time. The Totem is always packed with diners, but the wait time for orders is never long. Been going here since I moved to Everet in 1988. When the couple owned it you could not beat the price/service/food. Then his son took over and it went downhill. He had to sell out and the people that took over seem to be great. In the last year though its starting to go down hill customer service wize. It has all new wait staff now and they have a really sour attitude. I wasnt going to say anythign about a previous visit but it now appears that poor service is standard. Before we were not allowed to sit at our table when our time came as the son wasnt there yet. So we had to wait another 15-20 minutes when he arrived a couple minutes later. Thats just wrong. Then today (9/14/2023) was the kicker. It was a little busy but no bad. McKinze was our waitress. After ordering we waited a long time for food. Then we noticed that people that ordered way after us was getting food. So we flagged her down and asked why. And then she flat our lied to us. She said we ordered an Omlet which takes longer. Which would maybe be believeable except the couple next to us that ordered WAY WAY after us got their food. BOTH HAD OMLETS. Being Lied to is the WORST thing a waitress could do.
