Moved from CT in 1991. Have been a Pepe's customer since the 1970's. Back home for family event. Ordered two medium pies ($48!!). Upon arrival for pick up was summarily directed to The Spot restaurant next door. I understand it is a Pepe's restaurant. It's been there for years. It is not the Pepe's I expected. Pies were ok but not the Pepe's I remember. Why do they not ask you or tell you when ordering? I saw other takeout coming from within Pepe's Disappointing - to say the least. Stumbled upon Town Pizza while on my way to a museum. The service was okay. Nothing extra from the waitress just bare minimum service. Didn't even get a water refill. Pizza was pretty good. It was a really large slice. I ordered the pizza and salad lunch combo. Salad was just an average house salad. This place was okay but after reading more reviews, I should have tried the pasta instead. Also the customer restroom is terrible. You have to walk downstairs to get to this creepy restroom. read more

First time and last. Didn't feel welcomed, felt rushed to place order. Too pricey for the portion and quality of food. Steak and cheese sub was bland, size small and thin for the price, only 4 tiny pieces of tomatoes, and the steak looked/tasted like fake steak ummm from the store. The pizza slices were bland as well, more dough than anything else, and sauce was sweet like store Ragu. It definitely didn't feel as if we were eating from a real pizzeria. Do not recommend. Next time, I'd give Costa Pizza a first time visit. I'm pretty sure they will be much better. read more

**I am unsure why this place is in YELP 2x? But here is my review**** As said by the previous reviewer, this place is NOT to be overlooked. I can't believe I have been coming here for well over 3 years and never reviewed or even checked in. Oh well here goes nothing! The inside of this place could use a re-vamp but seriously who cares when the food is so good. I have never had the pizza, just salads, wraps and gyro's and they are ALL amazing. The portions are HUGE especially if you dine in, they almost give you family style salad portions. They are all fresh and made to order, and they even have a all you can eat salad and soup bar located on the top level. All of the local people and workers in the dt area always frequent this place and it really is the "go to spot" for lunch! If you have jury duty, it is a great place to go for a quick meal if you have to be back to the courthouse. I love this place and I go 1x every 2 weeks :) read more

Wi-fi? No. Televisions? No. Trendy decor? No. Hipster crowd? No. Great pizza slices? Yes! You will be forced to talk to whoever you brought in with you. I know, crazy concept to look up from your phone or phaplet. Do you even know what your girlfriend looks like android/apple boy? Admittedly, this place is kind of depressing. If it was not for Yelpers, I probably would not have ever gone in. Was here from 7:30 to 8pm on a Friday night, and I am the only one that has walked through the door. The store front is not very welcoming, and the interior may not have been renovated since the 70's, or 80's. All that aside, the two pizza slices and a soda for only $5 was great. Note: This review is ONLY about the pizza slices. I dont take stars away from eateries, unless they are dirty, or hire idiots. This place was clean, and had a very nice older lady taking orders. This place is SO GOOD. We got the chicken kebab plate with the Greek salad and dolma (grape leaves). The yogurt sauce it came with tasted fresh and bright. The kebab was freshly made, juicy, and well seasoned-- it tasted like home cooking. The meal was healthy too with a lot of good veggies. This is a great place to grab lunch or dinner. I'm blown away, and also saddened. Blown away by the amazing food I've received here, and saddened that I spent so many days just walking by. The outside of this restaurant is non-descript, and nothing really says, "hey you, come inside for an awesome meal". However, once you take that step through the door, you're greeted by the wonderful aroma of roasting meat, crispy pizza and fresh cooked meals. I didn't come here by choice, my first option was closed, so I decided to give it a try and I'm glad I did. Day one was a Gyro. Juicy and tender, with a perfect fluffy pita. Topped with fresh vegetables & tzatziki. It didn't automatically come with feta, which I was a little bummed about, but the sandwich was fantastic. Ask for feta if you're a fan. Day two (of course back-to-back because it was that good), was the lamb platter. I'm not sure what prompted me to order lamb, since i'm not a huge fan, but this place has me wanting seconds & thirds... Paired with a delicious greek salad, and some lemon flavored rice. Was very happy to find this hole-in-the wall pizza joint (one I never visited during my bright college years, that's for sure) after a morning at the Peabody. No-frills, thin crust pizza, decent hoagie sandwiches, and large salads. Tried a number of things: pizza, eggplant parm and buffalo chicken grinder. All were serviceable (though the grinder was a bit greasy), and the pizza was a really pleasant surprise. Thin, crispy/chewy crust and good ratio of topping to crust. But tomato sauce tasted like it came from a can - sorry! Still, my better half said it tasted better than Pepe's. Blasphemy, I know. Service was more than pleasant, especially given the large crowd I was with. Lovely waitstaff and nice guy making the pizzas. Thank you for being so nice to us! Parking was fine. This is not the most attractive decor for eating in But, the food is really consistently excellent. Their catering is teriffic. Based on a strong recommendation we had Nick supply us with a pizza picnic for 25 in Wooster Square park. He gave us two teriffic salads lots of pizza pies in all different varieties (including,believe it or not, a delicious mashed potatoes and bacon white pie),drinks,cookies,a table all delivered. Note: This is only for take-out slices of pizza. I've never had lunch here, and from reading the reviews, sit down experiences seem better. That being said, I had a seriously negative experience. Stopped by here on a weekday night at around 8:30. Ordered a slice of pizza to line my stomach during the rest of my walk to East Rock. Mind you, I've never thought one could have a 'bad' slice of pizza-- but I experienced it that night (and i was slightly tipsy too-- so it would've been hard to meet a pizza I didn't like at that point). Anyhow, this could be due to the fact that new haven pizza (perhaps due to the thin crust?) never seems to travel well. everytime I've gone to Modern's or sally's, the pizza the day after is a sad shadow of its fresh glory. This is what this slice I ordered tasted like. It was really greasy, soggy, salty-- almost impossible to eat with your hands). And honestly, it just tasted like grease. I didn't finish it-- it wasn't worth it (I think maybe one of the few slices of pizza I have ever thrown away). The workers there seemed really nice, and I'm sure actual pizzas and full meals (that they can prepare individually for you, instead of re-heating) are probably way better; but I will avoid getting individual slices from here. New Haven isn't exactly the city that never sleeps -- thus, when visiting a friend, our options for semi-late evening food seemed fairly limited. We stumbled in here and it was empty. A nearly toothless woman took our order. The pizza was somewhere between okay and not really all that okay, HOWEVER they gave us this little appetizer thing -- kind of like a very thin crusted pizza crusted with olive oil and garlic. This review is mainly for Town Pizza's lunch options. The pizza is pretty mediocre (sauce is too sweet, and I wish they complemented their strong Greek menu with actual Greek pizza instead of a weak attempt at a thin crust), but the salads and other menu items are great. I usually like to have lunch at my desk so I can get some extra work done, but Town Pizza has a soup and salad bar buffet on weekdays from 11-2:30, and I've come to look forward to the days when my friends who work in the immediate vicinity can meet up for lunch here. The salad bar is wonderful - fresh lettuce mix options with the usual salad bar fixings like bacon, hard boiled eggs, and assorted veggies, plus really good grilled chicken, buffalo chicken, tuna, stuffed grape leaves, quality housemade croutons, pasta salad, fruit, and cottage cheese. There are two soups (sometimes three) to choose from, and an assortment of rolls and stuffed breads. Today I had a big salad with all the fixings, chili, rolls, and stuffed bread - all for just under $8. Prices are great all around, and portions are very generous whether you eat there or order takeout. This isn't a place I would drive out of my way to if I weren't already in the area, but I'm very glad that it's within walking distance for me and available for my regular lunch rotation. read more

Don't let the exterior fool you, this restaurant has excellent food inside. After leaving Manhattan, I thought I'd never find a restaurant/diner with such variety. The Greek specialties are delicious, and the burgers are not greasy at all. You can substitute French fries for onion rings, and that's a big plus. Such a good find on Whtney St. Best Greek food in New Haven in my opinion. Terrific Greek Salad. Souvlakis, gyros, and the mousakka are really really tasty. Their other menu items equally well prepared and delicious....hamburgers for example. Service is good and servings are ample.
