This bar within the Westin hotel serves as a hub mostly to the employees of the local offices located next door as well as hotel guests. I stopped in recently for a brief happy hour with friends and while nothing provided a major wow factor this is a nice not overly crowded location. I had a few beers and their bbq glazed wings which weren't half bad. The happy hour which lasts from 5-7pm is pretty decent and the prices aren't bad at all, house drinks were around $5, draft beers were $2 off and the appetizers were around $6. All in all a fair experience for a hotel restaurant. read more

One word....Outstanding. i stayed at the Westin for training for work. Breakfast was provided by buffet for all who attended. I wasn't sure what i was going to get but it far exceeded my expectations. Breakfast was an assortment of pastries, muffins, scrambled eggs, roasted purple, red and white potatoes, make your own yogurt parfait. Bacon and french toast made with cinnamon raisin, cranberry bread. Everything was great but the french toast made my day. I don't know how i got through a full day of training with that meal. Also provided was lunch also was healthy and delicious. On my last night i decided on dinner. I had the seafood mac and cheese with lumps of crab meat and hunks of lobster...a definite must get if you go. The panko baked ontop and grern onions gave a nice crunch to the dish. read more

Call it kismet or serendipity, but there were so many factors that led to me finally experiencing an evening at Trademark Drink and Eat. Staying just steps away at the Marriott Residence Inn Carlyle this week, until our beautiful new apartment is ready for move-in a few blocks away, I knew I wanted to go there. My favorite hobby is reading menus posted in restaurant windows, so this place was my first stop everyday. Yet, in falling in love with my new neighborhood, I never put it as first on my list. My food journey began by exploring the many restaurants in Crystal City, then on to Old Town Alexandria. **** 2.5 stars **** Just after we left Trademark my initial reflections on our meal were a bit more positive than Suzy's, focusing mainly on the good food that we had, but now a few days later after some reflection I'm still a bit sour from the horrendous service we received and I just can't in good conscience recommend this place to anyone, yet. As it stands this is pretty good hotel food (the notion that hotels don't have good restaurants is absurd...hello, Bourbon Steak? Adour? Poste?) which is currently not geared towards the average hotel guest who would be staying in this particular Westin location, and the crux of that shortcoming is the lackluster service. Before I begin with the bad, I will at least give them credit for the good, which was the actual food served. My pork 'n' beans dish ($19) was one of the only two entrée portion courses on the brunch menu and I felt delivered on almost every front. The pork was cooked well, the beans were done nicely, and the crispy onion strings added some necessary texture. The only drawbacks were the overly sweet BBQ sauce drowning out the greens which lacked any bitterness, so the flavors became somewhat one dimensional. I didn't even bother to try Suzy's plate, as the market omelet ($14) essentially only contained asparagus and it wasn't worth one bite to have smelly asparagus urine all day, and her side of potatoes was essentially the exact same as the lump crab hash that I had also ordered, minus the crab. That hash ($9) was nice, with a generous portion of crab, as well as an abundance of Old Bay...perhaps too much. I would recommend it, but the portion size per price ratio might be a bit disturbing for some. Unfortunately these couple dishes took close to 40 minutes to arrive from the kitchen. Considering we were the only ones in the restaurant when we ordered this was pretty shocking. Let me rewind a bit to give a full picture of the experience. We were cruising through Alexandria, hungry after a long night out of drinking in Capitol Hill, trying to decide where we would eat brunch to calm our stomachs from the previous night's transgressions. Since Trademark had just opened recently I called ahead to make sure they were serving lunch / brunch, and the guy on the phone told me yes, but that the kitchen closed at 2PM so we needed to get there quickly (it was only about 12:45 at the time, and his statement about closing was totally inaccurate). We were relatively close at the time, so we arrived just before 1PM, and ordered just after. Sometime around 1:30PM I received the cocktail that I had ordered some half an hour prior...again, it's important to note that there was nobody else in the restaurant when we ordered, and only a moderate amount of people when my drink finally arrived. How the hell is this possible? There was certainly nothing remarkable about the drink, a combination of single malt whiskey, Domaine de Canton, Luxardo and lemon juice that they called a spin on a Dark and Stormy. WTF?? None of those ingredients are in a Dark and Stormy, or really all that close, and the drink itself doesn't remotely resemble that. I was curious when reading it to begin with, but figured they must know what it tastes like so what the hell. Another 10 minutes pass and at 1:40PM, a full 40 minutes after ordering, we receive our food, along with our bill, essentially indicating to us that they were done serving us for the day. While this type of service "convenience" is generally nice for hotel guests who are in a rush, the incredibly slow level of service received totally negates it and it just winds up being dickish. To add an extra level of annoyance, they have a chalkboard listing the various specialty mac'n'cheese dishes for the day, which we had read a good bit about in preview articles and were excited to try. Suzy inquired if we could order the Cuban mac, given that it wasn't listed on the brunch menu but was still being displayed on the board, and we were told no, we could only order it if we waited til 2PM (just 15 minutes away...). This is basically the restaurant version of the old McDonald's "breakfast stops at 10AM" joke, except in my history with Starwood properties (Westin, W's, etc) I've never been denied so curtly. The strange thing to me is that this is not a "new" restaurant, per se, it's just a new concept in a reused space. There was a restaurant here previously in this space, owned by the Westin, and with presumably the exact same staff...because they paraded around the restaurant with a casual tone that indicated they were used to slacking off. I might accept some service blunders from a brand new operation and be a bit more forgiving, but here it's just really unacceptable. read more

The atmosphere is fairly sophisticated and fits the background of the patent office and legal activities in the neighborhood. Service was ok. We've been here a few times for drinks and appetizers. When I walked in with my nice dress shirt and slacks on a man dressed in an Armani suit spit on my shoes. You know how swanky Trademark is? I ordered a PBR and the bartender put his towel down that he was wiping off the bar with, walked way down to the end of the bar, came back my way, took his glove off, and slapped me in the face with it. Everyone in the entire establishment started cheering for him and throwing food and Stella Artois at me. A friend and I stopped here for a beer and a snack after work one night, and were pleasantly surprised. The hotel bar, has had several makeovers throughout the years, but this one has craft cocktails, and foodies in mind, which is nice to see. The interior décor has a trendy mansion library feel to it, and is very spacious and refreshing. The bar is long (Estimated 20-25 seating), and there are at least 20 tables throughout the establishment. The bar has 6 nice TV displays, and every NFL game was represented, so a bonus for sports fans. The on-tap/bottled beer menu is fairly status quo, although Strongbow, D.C. Brau, and Flying Dog make an appearance. $9 import drafts is a bit steep, but reasonable. The food menu is standard, but with an innovative executive chef flair. The Bacon Candy is essentially a nice thick square piece of bacon on a skewer, with a nice brown sugar/nutmeg glaze. 2 skewers for $3 dollars is nice to see. The fried pickles have almost a breadstick breading, and are close to 4 inches long. A Sriracha mayo was provided, and added the kick that the flavorless breading needed. The beef brisket sliders were excellent, and left us quite satisfied. The bartenders were quite friendly, and informative. They reflect a real commitment to turn the Trademark Bar into a destination, and not just a hotel guest occupied bar/grill. read more

The drinks here are solid. News alert: you can actually get craft cocktails in a spacious well-lit environment! I came here on a Monday at 5:30 so maybe that's not an accurate representation of how crowded the establishment normally is. It's by the patent office so I can't imagine normal Old Town crowd would really venture over there. We sat at the bar so service wasn't an issue. The drinks were great and i had a lovely buzz after 2 cocktails. I always end up getting a 3rd drink when I'm disappointed in a cocktail list but I was happily content after my second. My friend's cheese plate looked good but I did not order any food. I will definitely return to try their food and upgrade or downgrade the review accordingly if necessary. The food, drinks and service here are top notch. Unfortunately, so are the prices. This is more of an expense account kind of bar with some excellent menu items. I love their fries. And the burgers are probably the best in the Washington, DC area...but they cost around $20 so whoa! That's quite a lot. If you can finish a burger and fries then you deserve a medal because the portion is enormous. Unlike the burgers and fries, the beers are reasonably priced. We like to come here for happy hour sometimes. The bar has a pretty vibrant feel to it and if I were doing any work with the court or patent office, or just staying near the King Street metro, this would be one of my top choices for a bit to eat, a friendly conversation, and a beer. It's just far enough removed from the cheesy tourist family dining that plagues Old Town to make it enjoyable. And while it might lack some of the character of the olden Old Town bars about a mile down the street, it makes up for this in unsurpassed quality. read more

For a hotel restaurant this was very good. I had dinner here twice during our stay at the Westin. Staff is very nice, service is quick. The burger was juicy and flavorful at a medium cook. Fries were not what was on the menu but were very good (McDonald's type). We also ordered the Cubano. Really good. Could use some jalapenos if you like heat. Breakfast was good also. We ordered the breakfast that included coffee. Best way to go as coffee by itself is a little high priced. On this side of town this is the best place to go other than the Thai restaurant a block away. read more

Not impressive. Our party of five were all underwhelmed by our meals. My black bean burger was mushy and nearing flavorless, and the coleslaw was just bad. I also heard complaints about the tomato soup, chicken sandwich, and calamari. The oddest complaint was about the our waters, which had a very faint taste of chlorine. It wasn't bad for the price point, it was simply bad. Would not recommend for dinner. We went later for drinks and that was fine. They were cool with us using laptops/plugs for several hours, so that was a plus. I ate here twice this week while staying at the Westin Alexandria. I started with the Trademark Manhattan, which wasn't to my taste. I followed it with the Seafood Mac and Cheese. Perhaps it's just me, but I am not a fan of this dish in a cast iron skillet. The taste of cast iron overpowered the dish, which was unfortunate since it was otherwise very good, especially when topped with the Bacon Candy appetizer. The Eats are delicious, the Drinks are inventive, the atmosphere is cozy. We've been twice and sat at the bar both times, the first time we were able to enjoy dinner/drinks. The second time we sat at the bar for 15 minutes unable to flag down a bartender before leaving. Perhaps the tourists staying in the adjacent hotel don't realize that busy King Street is just minutes away and are willing to put up with this sort of service, but we'll take our business elsewhere. read more

I don't always eat the crispy skin, but theirs was good. I would order this dish again. Sticky Toffee ($7): Kristi's favorite, and it is good, just a little too rich for my personal taste. So she just wrote all the ingredients from the menu on her card. Updated March 11, 2015: Recently visited the bar at Trademark twice to give it another shot. The first time, I received solid service from Alex. The second time, though, was atrocious. The other bartender (you know him: looks like he just rolled out of bed) makes you feel uncomfortable about being a patron. Always seems to be in a bad mood. Barely looks you in the eye. Couple that with the high prices, and I still can't justify bumping up my rating. Also, I realize in my first scalding review I didn't give much justification for giving Trademark two stars instead of one. Well, the food can be tasty, and the table service has generally been good in my experience. Original review: I really want to like this place because we have so little to choose from in Carlyle, but the prices are completely unjustified for the mediocre food, hit-or-miss cocktails and atrocious bar service. As someone who spent many years working in the restaurant industry, I'd like to focus on the service for a moment. At a "high-end" establishment, the customer should be treated as an honored guest. Among the Trademark bartenders, the concepts of customer service and professionalism are completely lacking. As far as I'm concerned, a dirty bar and lack of attentiveness are the only trademarks of Trademark (see what I did there?). In the end, blame should really be leveled at management, which is obviously clueless. Come on people, this isn't Ruby Tuesday. I'm through with Trademark until there's a change. Recommend choosing Delia's, Theismann's or Sweet Fire Donna's instead. read more

This place is inside a hotel. I am not from the area and it was difficult to locate. I made a reservation but upon arrival there was not one staff member that stopped to address me standing and waiting! I had to flag someone down and ASK to be seated and the waitor seemed to be bothered by that. After being seated I again had to FLAG someone down to assist me after I had been paitently sitting there looking at all of the ruckus for 15 minutes. The blueberry pancakes I had were great but the rest was just "ok" .... I'm a stickler for poor service and as such I will not revisit this location next time I am in the area. read more

This is a hotel bar inside a Westin. It's a decent hotel bar, but it's still a hotel bar. The atmosphere is very nice, with high quality finishes, interesting decoration, and plenty of TVs around the bar. The cocktail list was OK. I tried three: the Trademark Old Fashioned, the Jack Rose, and the Commonwealth Cocktail. The Old Fashioned, despite a description that made the drink sound different, was just an old fashioned with grapefruit bitters rather than aromatic bitters. The Jack Rose was a decent version of a classic cocktail. But the Commonwealth Cocktail was the best of the bunch. The smokiness of the Scotch-like single malt whiskey blended well with the ginger liqueur, lemon, and maraschino. This is one of the more unique cocktails on the menu, and I hope that it remains. The service at the bar was also just OK. The evening we were there, a manager spent most of the evening talking to one patron (who appeared to be a friend). That manager seemed to enjoy directing his bartenders to make various versions of cocktails and correct them in front of his friend. If this was a training program, it seemed to be for the manager's benefit and not the employees. And, it was an awkward activity in front of the bar patrons -- especially since it kept the bar tenders from servicing an otherwise fairly crowded bar. We also tried the roasted corn kernels and bacon candy. Both sounded great in concept, but lacked in execution. The bacon candy seemed dry; possibly from being cooked and then reheated? The corn kernels could have used a little more spice. Overall, Trademark is an improvement over the other bars in the Carlyle area. Hopefully, it finds its groove. read more

Above average hotel restaurant. When I recently stayed at the Westin, I dined here twice (lunch and dinner). On Sunday afternoon, during the football game there are $5 grilled wings, which were awesome. They were simple, seasoned with a little bit of hit and not greasy at all and were a perfect complement to the IPA they had on tap. They had the Sunday Ticket so you could watch every game and we're very accommodating. That evening, I had a burger with the candied bacon. This was a pretty good version of the bacon candy - sweet, but not stick to your teeth sweet. The burger was well seasoned and came with an enormous side of fries. I had dinner at the Trademark on Friday night and it was easily one of the best meals I've ever had. It was Restaurant Week in Alexandria so the Trademark had a special menu for the occasion. I opted for the bacon wrapped scallop, the roasted half chicken and a Snickerdoodle cheesecake for dessert. I also ordered the wine pairing for an additional $10. Everything was fantastic but the chicken -- which is on their regular menu as well -- was really amazing. It came with creamy polenta and kale. I could have stood up and applauded the three items were that good. The waitress told me the chicken was one of their best dishes and it did not disappoint. But bring an appetite because the entree was LARGE. I was staying at the Westin so I went back the next day for lunch. Even the chili was good! I paired it with one of the wines from the night before (a Riesling) and that made for a lovely, filling lunch. If there was one thing I would change about Trademark are the hours. If this place were open later than 9pm, they could get even more business. It being in a quiet residential neighborhood, it would make the perfect late-night spot for adults that like a more intimate ambiance. I can't wait to go back! read more

I wasn't wowed by my drink or the food. The brown sugar in ,my old fashion made it a little too sweet for me. And the cheddar and onion fries I expected to have way more cheddar and onion. So, let me start by saying that I am reviewing Trademark Eat and Drink based on one single visit and doing so because I am unlikely to return. I came for the special pre fixe Thanksgiving menu and was bitterly disappointed. The starter was the corn chowder which, apart from the micro-greens adorning the top, could have come from a container at the grocery. It wasn't bad, but neither is the stuff from the grocery. It wasn't can-bad, but it certainly wasn't anything worth a repeat. And, although I had a bread knife perched upon a bread plate, I was not apparently entitled to a bread basket. The oversight didn't bother me until I witnessed other tables with lovely bread baskets boasting of steaming goodies inside. Then came the entrée of sweet potato gnocci with kale, toasted pine nuts, grated unmelted asiago cheese and fried prosciutto. The prosciutto was absolutely the tastiest thing on that plate, then the greens. The gnocci, a dish that I usually indulge in with relish, was off. What should have been tender little bites of steaming sweet potato fluffiness had somehow been cooked to death with the outside texture boarding on that of a thick potato skin-like consistency. I was appalled. I was also having some sort of allergic reaction and was feeling some urgency to depart when finally the server, who, by the way was a delight, finally brought my lovely wrapped slice of carrot cake layered with fluffy pumpkin mousse. That was a treasure I was looking forward to later on that evening. Alas, the carrot cake was so dry that no amount on pumpkin mousse was going to make up for that fact.... and the caramel drizzle was so unfortunately burnt as to bring out a nasty bitter flavor. I was not thrilled with my first visit to Trademark Eat and Drink and I think I'll make it my last. If you can't bring your A-game on Thanksgiving Day, keep your doors shut. I'm not even going to mention the ghastly wine pairing that I wasn't even able to finish; the first was tolerable, but the second did absolutely nothing for me. I will say that the venue is lovely, though, as were the wait staff. One can hardly blame the menu on them. read more

The service was great and my food was really good (the pretzel bites, buffalo chicken flatbread, and lobster mac and cheese) but my boyfriend didn't really like his food (fish and chips) and my Carlyle Sour was wayyyy too sour. The one thing that is really bringing my review of this place down though is the vibe. It's a fairly empty, wide open place (on a Friday night) and you can definitely tell it's associated with the hotel in that kind of sad way. I probably wouldn't make my way back over here. read more

My husband and I were in DC for business and stayed at the Westin. We decided to dine here because we wouldn't have to leave the hotel and travel far for some food. The cocktails were on point and exactly what you need after a long day of work. We both got whiskey mixed drinks--their version of an old fashioned and a whiskey sour. Both great. The caesar salad was delicious. We both got burgers and fries that were on the salty side and a little overcooked. The dessert was also just okay. The salted caramel cheesecake is just a cheesecake with caramel syrup on top...it's not baked into the cake itself. Service was attentive and friendly. Ate here for Saturday morning breakfast. My total (dining alone) was $20.60 for a smoothie, oatmeal, and coffee. Now let's talk about these items. Smoothie was only about 6 oz and blended very poorly- there were chunks of carrot throughout and it was served about 5 degrees below room temperature. The oatmeal was a very generous portion of grain, but only had three slender slices of banana, some cinnamon, and claimed to be topped with honey but this was undetectable. I eat unflavored oatmeal topped with fruit several times a week, but I found the ratio of toppings to oatmeal to be inadequate. The coffee, of which I had a carafe to myself (nice), was burnt. On the other hand, grabbing a drink at the bar at night is a very pleasant experience and priced appropriately for the atmosphere. read more

Heather is the best bartender ever. She is so nice and knowledgeable about her drinks. She gets along great with all of the regulars and is very hospitable. I highly recommend their burger or fish and chips. 10/10! Great job Heather keep it up! read more

So we were lured here by promises of a bacon bar. There was no bacon bar to be found. Also, the service is lacking in all aspects. The server who attended to us acted like he would have been happier being any other place in the world. It took literally 30 minutes for the drinks we ordered to come. The food was ok, but nothing I couldn't make at home. The best thing on the bar was really the BLT and it's a sad day when the best thing on the buffet bar is the BLT sandwich. Lastly, I saw plenty of "managers" who did a lot more chatting/watching than actually managing. We won't be back. read more

Brunch was great. Omelet station was on point. Host staff was also very accommodating. Wait staff was poor & continually provided incorrect information. Giving five stars due to the good food & the excellent service from the kitchen & host staff outweighing the the service from the wait staff. Dad chimes in with, "Orange juice was canned, expect better based upon the cost of the brunch buffet." I didn't have the Orange juice. read more
