I'm always excited to hear when new restaurants are opening in Old Town and, after seeing the photos of Trademark Drink + Eat, I was eager to check it out. Knowing this hotel restaurant was to specialize in cocktails, we asked our good friends Gregg and Carol if they had been yet. They hadn't, so off we went as guinea pigs to a Sunday brunch.
At 1pm on a Sunday we were the only patrons in the restaurant. That allowed us to take in an unobstructed view of the lovely dining space. The colors are bold, the tables vary (high top, low top, communal and, of course, bar seating), and the place is adorned by inventive looking items to fit in with the Trademark theme and its proximity in the Carlyle area to the U.S. Patent and Trademark office. In addition to the paper menus, some key items are also listed on chalkboards around the bar, including the six beers they have on tap, the cheese selection and, most importantly, the mac and cheese selection.
Apparently the light bulbs, beakers and magnifying glasses here are the only inventive things, as the idea of service hasn't quite dawned on anyone yet. Hopefully that's just a kink that will be worked out since Trademark is still new, but holy Jesus it should not take 30 minutes to get one cocktail when you were the first table to be seated (they started to fill after we arrived. The vast majority of the diners looked like they were staying at the Westin). And this wasn't just an isolated issue; the couple beside us flagged down the waiter to ask where their cocktails were and they ended up leaving after their drink...didn't even bother waiting on food. Justin ordered Trademark's version of a Dark and Stormy and, after he finally got it, said it was nothing like a Dark and Stormy. As irritability set in during the wait, I was increasingly more happy I'd chosen to stick with my water with lemon. If I'd been irritable and tipsy I probably would have made a big fuss about the wait time.
After what seemed like an eternity we got our food. The market vegetable omelet I ordered had asparagus and cheese, and was accompanied by a colorful assortment of potatoes make with green onions, and multi-grain toast with a side of butter. It was certainly a well prepared omelet, though slightly boring with just one vegetable, but I would have still been hungry if it wasn't for the jumbo slices of toast. The main item of the meal should be the *main item*; you shouldn't pay $14 to get full off of filler bread just so you don't leave hungry. Justin got one of the two full entrees on the brunch menu -- the pork and beans with greens. I liked his meal quite a bit and it was much more filling than the breakfast items on the menu since most of those revolved around quick to eat items like granola and yogurt, eggs how you want them, or blueberry pancakes. But, again, at $19 for a brunch item, it should be filling. Additionally, we split the lump crab hash ($9) which essentially was the same potatoes I got with my omelet mixed with a good portion of lump crab meat covered in old bay. All of the food was quite good, but there are areas of the menu that still need to be worked out (add a side of meat to the omelet, etc).
As if the service couldn't get any worse, I flagged down our waiter at about 1:40 after the chalkboard with the Cuban mac and cheese reminded me that I'd read good things about it but hadn't seen it on the brunch menu. They label these dishes "TradeMac-n-Cheese" and if it's a signature dish, you'd think it'd be available all the time. Wrong. We were told we couldn't order it until 2pm. Well, given it was nearly that time and it didn't look like our food would be out until then anyway, couldn't they just throw it on the same order and bring it all out at the same time? Guess not. Perhaps my overall annoyance or the fact that I expected the wait/bar/kitchen staff to actually work efficiently made our waiter done with us because along with our meals he brought the check. Maybe he should have just packed our food in a doggie bag too if he wanted us out the door!
The food here is the only thing saving Trademark and allowing me to give it an average review. The overall experience left a bad enough taste in my mouth that I'll have to hear from Gregg and Carol that the drinks are exceptional and that the service has become tolerable to consider going back. Hopefully management works that out and gives us incentive to give it another go, but given the Westin will provide a steady stream of people willing to pay their per diem to eat here so they don't have to venture out into the elements for food, I'm afraid Trademark has little incentive to improve itself much. read more
