    We arrived an hour early to grab food from the Mexican restaurant out front, not realizing the speakeasy had its own menu. Tragos is a very cool spot. You enter through a hidden wall behind a jukebox, and the atmosphere inside is grown and sexy: dimly lit, great music, and stunning decor. The drinks are all named after songs, and my favorite was the "Kiss of Life." I would definitely come back to explore the food and desserts.

    Go for the atmosphere! That's about it. I do understand they're fairly new so have time to work out the kinks, but there were a number of others some items It may not be addressed. We were a group of four on a Friday evening. We sat upstairs in a little seating sofa area, which was initially nice but realized quickly. It's better to be downstairs. The design in the look of the place is great and by far the best feature. Entering through the jukebox is fun But honestly, it's cumbersome and a bit of a gimmick. Will get old quickly My main complaint would be the food in the Woefully overpriced drinks. I mean, tremendously overpriced for what you get. The drinks are Mezcal forward, which I understand but unfortunately two of the drinks on their menu they could not make because they did not have all of the items. We got there just after they opened and that's not acceptable when you have such a limited menu. I am one who will pay for a well crafted cocktail for $20 a pop. These are not those. Especially in a city that has nationally and internationally ranked establishments that don't charge that much. The food selection is limited, which is fine, but even the execution was not there. Again, one of the items was not available again unacceptable when you're new and it's early in the evening. Steak tartar was quite bland and the presentation is poor. I would not put it on a plate looking like A raw hamburger about to go on the grill and serve it that way. I would definitely change that presentation. Also, there is quite a bit there and only three small crostini Included. Again, probably for the presentation, but you need at least six to consume that much steak. And not going to wait 15 minutes for the kitchen to bring out more. Just deliver more. Also know that the bar selection is extremely limited. At least at this time. Again, I understand they want to promote their cocktails, but you need to have your ability to make some off the menu selections. They were unable to make a simple martini or an espresso martini because they did not have an espresso. Seriously? If you want to survive, you need to expand your drink selection. And the service was attentive, but a bit awkward. As it's new, I will likely try again My recommendation is try it once come for the drinks and the atmosphere then go to dinner elsewhere. There is work needed to be done

My wife and I visited on our first NoLa trip together about 4 years ago and make it a point to go every time now. Our first time we stopped in for lunch at the bar and had an excellent experience, and decided to return. We came back on the next trip just to grab a drink and a snack before heading down for dinner in the Bywater. The bartender (Chris) gave a bunch of recommendations for places to visit that way, all of which we have done in the past few trips and have loved. But it's this past trip where we were truly blown away. We were in town for JazzFest and after walking back to the French Quarter, we were thinking about food options and decided to take a gamble to see if we could get a seat at the bar or maybe grab a drink for the road before getting food somewhere else. The bar was full when we got there around 8/8:15, but they had a no show and could serve us, as long as we ordered quickly and were ok with the check hitting the table right at 9PM. Given our slightly (perhaps generous) inebriated state from being at the festival all day and being slightly underdressed, we felt this was quite a kind accommodation. With the clear expectations of needing to get our orders in quickly, we wasted no time making a decision on our drinks and a few food options. Despite this need for a quick turn around, at no time did we feel rushed. The food and drinks were absolutely perfect, as they always are. But what impressed us most was the staff. At no point did the hostess or wait staff seem annoyed by us, despite us parachuting in from a music festival and looking like sunburn and poor decisions. By managing expectations on the front end, we never felt rushed despite the need for a quick turn around. They were all lovely, professional, and as cordial as if we were regulars with standing reservations once a week. In terms of atmosphere, it is always perfect: lively and fun for a date night, dinner with friends/family, or just a nice drink before a night out and about. I truly cannot begin to explain how much I love this restaurant and every experience I've had there. The awards and accolades this establishment (a sincere and lofty term Jewel of the South truly deserves) have been awarded are beyond well earned. Restaurants around the country should aspire to provide the quality of food, service, and overall hospitality Jewel of the South provides on a regular basis. It will continue to be our first and foremost recommendation to anyone we know who is going to New Orleans. Bravo! We shall return!

We were seated in the upstairs area and tried some of their drinks. We got the Brandy Crusta which is their most popular drink and the Pouvez-Vous Poulet which is a seasonal cocktail. The Brandy Crusta has the cup dipped in sugar with a fairly strong cocktail within. Definitely get this when you are here as that is one of the best Brandy Crustas and is historical. The Pouvez-Vous Poulet is a duck fat washed rum cocktail and is also very delicious. You cannot really go wrong with any cocktail, but definitely order the Brandy Crusta for the true experience here. Though, honestly, while the cocktails are good, it was not as memorable as the other Top 50 Best Bars in the World that I have been to, but I won't dock a star off because of this, since the cocktails and overall experience otherwise were fantastic. Service is good but can be a bit slow, but it is an acceptable tradeoff for a more quiet ambience compared to downstairs.

Rye whiskey, Peychaud's Bitters, and sugar are stirred in a small pitcher with ice. The serving glass is chilled, then emptied, and finished with an absinthe rinse along the rim. The cocktail is strained into the glass and topped with a lemon peel. The atmosphere makes the experience even better. The murals, the history, and the energy of the room give it a sense of occasion that you do not get at most bars. We had such a great time sitting at the bar that my wife and I each finished two and a half Sazeracs, which tells you everything you need to know.

Alchemist Elixir: pea flower gin, elderflower liqueur, fresh lemon. It shows up pale violet with an orchid on the rim and yes it's pretty, but it's also disciplined. Corpse Reviver #2: local gin, Lillet Blanc, Grand Marnier, absinthe, fresh lemon. Cold, crisp, citrus first, then the herbal edge and just enough absinthe to remind you what city you're in. Served in a textured coupe with a cherry skewer, details handled like they actually matter. Outside, the streets were selling amnesia in plastic souvenir cups. Inside, The Apothecary was serving adults. Let Bourbon Street keep the grenades. Give me the anecdote .
