Tragos Amargos is a whole experience from the moment we arrived. Duck off behind a jukebox, this speakeasy immediately gives you that "okay, where are we going?" feeling. From being greeted by the hostess to discovering the hidden entrance & even the closed-off red room, everything felt mysterious in good way. Once we walked in, I was honestly taken back. The dim red lighting, chandelier, walls, intimate seating & gorgeous bar transport you somewhere between another era & déjà vu, yet somehow it still feels completely new. Our bartender, Drew, was amazing. I ordered the tequila flight, served with orange slices, chocolate & a salty spice seasoning to cleanse the palate between tastings. My husband had the agave tasting flight. The flights are definitely not cheap, but they are absolutely worth the experience. Now the FOOD. I ordered the Oxtail Tetela with Black Mole & the presentation alone had me excited, but those flavors?! We also tried the short rib tacos, and all I could do was smile. Everything was tender, flavorful & delicious. We didn't have reservations or plans to come here. We literally popped up randomly, which somehow made the experience even better. This is a cool, sexy little speakeasy. You e seen the photos, you've heard about how to enter so I won't be repetitive about any of that. It's a great spot for some pre-night Coctails. I made a reservation on OpenTable and the reservations are time-slotted depending on the group size so pay attention to that. We were putting those drinks away so I think we got some leniency on the time. These are pricey but pretty tasty Coctails but you're also paying for the ambiance. Our server informed us that on weekends they have a DJ that runs vinyls but it gets pretty busy so don't skip on making a reservation. I went here with some ladies after a football game. You have to make a reservation with a credit card on file. We enter a taco restaurant then on the side a waitress greeted us. She then led one lady to the juxe box. You tap something and then there is another room then a door opens and there is another room. The place has dramatic red lighting with a bar in the middle. There are chandeliers and booths with red leather and tables and vinyl records all around. A really beautiful intimate setting. Our waiter was Kalvin and he had great energy / presence from the start. I like to drink strong drinks. He recommended the Dream drink (gin based with leychee flavor). The ladies with me got the take it easy cocktail (tequila based with watermelon) I ordered the crab croquettes & my friend ordered the alligator hot dog, another person ordered the ox tacos & the other some raw fish dish. This place is more like alicarte , you come here to enjoy individual dishes & a cocktail. If you are looking to leave full this isn't that. The food comes out and I enjoyed the croquettes and the alligator hot dog. My drink was strong and delicious. The presentation was great because it arrived with an aroma that the waiter explained about. The person who ordered the ox tacos was the only person at the table that didn't like her dish. Our waiter addressed the matter & he got her a dessert wine complimentary to make up for the dissatisfaction. The price point is $100 for two people. It is worth it. For a night out, this speakeasy was the perfect night cap for my husband's birthday. Located directly on Poydras, it was an easy walk from our hotel. The entrance to the speakeasy is a real jukebox and the hostess takes you inside. Once inside it's a romantic moody scene with tailored cocktails, savory bites, and smooth music. We weren't the biggest fans of the cocktails. They are heavily Mexican liquor infused drinks, which just isn't our personal preference. However, the food was great, but not your traditional Mexican food. It's an elevated assortment of southern dishes, like the alligator poboy bites and the crab coquettes! The alligator sausage was so good, we ordered them twice. Definitely recommend for a date night, but have an open mind on the cocktails. 3.5/5 Alright, lemme tell y'all a story about this spot. It's not bad, but it's not great either. First off, this place apparently uses a call center in Argentina for reservations. That's fine in theory, but somewhere along the way our reservation got messed up, and that's what the manager blamed it on. We had reserved a table for 8 people weeks in advance for my homegirl's birthday, but when we arrived, they told us we could only sit at the bar. It ended up taking over 25 minutes just to get seated because they weren't sure where to put us. Eventually they figured it out and got us a table, but for a reservation of 8 made weeks ahead of time, that was definitely frustrating. Now, I will say the hostess was an absolute 10/10. Patient, kind, professional, and she explained everything really well while trying to sort out the situation. She deserves her flowers. Service was decent overall. Just a heads up: 20% gratuity is automatically included. They did give us complimentary shots, which was a nice touch. Also, apparently hats aren't allowed. Wish someone would've mentioned that during the 25 minutes we spent at the front trying to get seated. My hat went with the fit, okay? Then once I got inside, I was told to remove it... meanwhile I noticed two other men wearing hats. Interesting. Now for the food: the crab croquettes were SOOO good. Packed with flavor and honestly one of my favorite things we ordered. Definitely get those. But the star of the show for me? The BBQ short rib tacos. Whew. Those things were melt-in-your-mouth tender, super flavorful, and had just the right little kick of spice. Easily my favorite dish of the night. I'd come back just for those. That said, the VIBE IS VIBING. The space is beautiful, unique, and the cocktails are great. Prices are definitely on the higher side for New Orleans, but you're paying for the atmosphere. We had way too much fun in here. My recommendation? Come for drinks, enjoy the vibe, and soak in the atmosphere. If you're coming with a larger group, be VERY specific when making your reservation. The hostess actually suggested asking the reservation rep to assign your party to a specific table number ahead of time so there's no confusion when you arrive. Trust me, it'll probably save you some headaches. Overall, this place has some kinks to work out when it comes to reservations, but the food, cocktails, and ambiance were enough that I'd come back. read more

My husband and I went to Tragos Amargos on Sunday night to celebrate Father's Day. It was a surprise, so he was confused when we walked into Taquerias Carnalito, completely overdressed, or so he thought lol. The jukebox secret entry was cute and led to a completely different atmosphere. Tragos Amargos is dimly lit and intimate with a romantic ambiance and sophisticated decor. There's no dj on Sundays, but there was smooth music playing throughout the night. We sat at the bar and ordered some of their craft cocktails and small bites. I had the Woman to Woman, which you'd probably enjoy if you like the smokiness of mezcal. He had the Summer in the City, which had a bold flavor profile that he didn't love. He did enjoy a watermelon drink (forgot the name), especially the fresh watermelon wedge. We're not big drinkers, so the cocktails weren't a huge draw for us. I hadn't realized Tragos Amargos was not a full restaurant, but a speakeasy bar instead. So we came with an appetite. We ordered multiple items from their limited food menu. The Louisiana Crab Croquettes were tasty, but two of the four were nearly empty. The Oxtail Tetela with Black Mole was good, although I would've liked for them to have more oxtail. The BBQ Short Rib Tacos were our favorite and most filling, though they could've used more sauce. We tried to order Beef Tartare, but it wasn't available. If you're looking for a nice dinner, I suggest going elsewhere and visiting Tragos Amargos for drinks and vibes as a nightcap. read more

Go for the atmosphere! That's about it. I do understand they're fairly new so have time to work out the kinks, but there were a number of others some items It may not be addressed. We were a group of four on a Friday evening. We sat upstairs in a little seating sofa area, which was initially nice but realized quickly. It's better to be downstairs. The design in the look of the place is great and by far the best feature. Entering through the jukebox is fun But honestly, it's cumbersome and a bit of a gimmick. Will get old quickly My main complaint would be the food in the Woefully overpriced drinks. I mean, tremendously overpriced for what you get. The drinks are Mezcal forward, which I understand but unfortunately two of the drinks on their menu they could not make because they did not have all of the items. We got there just after they opened and that's not acceptable when you have such a limited menu. I am one who will pay for a well crafted cocktail for $20 a pop. These are not those. Especially in a city that has nationally and internationally ranked establishments that don't charge that much. The food selection is limited, which is fine, but even the execution was not there. Again, one of the items was not available again unacceptable when you're new and it's early in the evening. Steak tartar was quite bland and the presentation is poor. I would not put it on a plate looking like A raw hamburger about to go on the grill and serve it that way. I would definitely change that presentation. Also, there is quite a bit there and only three small crostini Included. Again, probably for the presentation, but you need at least six to consume that much steak. And not going to wait 15 minutes for the kitchen to bring out more. Just deliver more. Also know that the bar selection is extremely limited. At least at this time. Again, I understand they want to promote their cocktails, but you need to have your ability to make some off the menu selections. They were unable to make a simple martini or an espresso martini because they did not have an espresso. Seriously? If you want to survive, you need to expand your drink selection. And the service was attentive, but a bit awkward. As it's new, I will likely try again My recommendation is try it once come for the drinks and the atmosphere then go to dinner elsewhere. New Orleans absolutely needs this place! Concepts like Tragos Amargos are typically found through travels around the world. Having them here located in the heart of the CBD is wonderful and refreshing. The place is absolutely stunning and the service is spot on. The cocktail menu has a soul and if you're lucky enough to hear the tale, it will heighten your appreciation of the savory options. These are not your basic or familiar cocktail choices. There are also mocktails for non drinkers. The menu also has small bites but not heavy enough to substitute for a proper dinner so have plans to visit before or after dinner. The music selection is upbeat and nostalgic. The music is not loud so it's perfect for date night or hanging with friends. Evan was our host and is marvelous!
