One of my favorite Pho spots in the city. Located on Penn Ave in Bloomfield, Tram's Kitchen is a small, family owned Viet restaurant serving Pho and other Vietnamese plates. I usually go for the pho dac biet but you have to ask them to fix it up for you. They'll throw in everything that they have that day, which in that case was more shrimp and beef heavy. My friend enjoyed her chicken Pho and we had a great time celebrating her birthday here. Our server was funny and kind, and was super personable. BYOB! read more

This is such a cute hole in the wall spot! Love that it wasn't crazy on a Friday night. They are cash only I believe. I like that they have a whole veggie menu. The pho was not super piping hot, dark (I prefer a clearer broth) and it's not my favorite pho but it hits the pho cravings. My friend liked their veggie pho and the egg rolls too. Kid liked the beef pho. Good broth. Good protein. Good amount of bean sprouts. Generous portions. Happy kid. Wonton soup was good. The filling has more spice forward than am used to-- more of an allspice or anise type flavor? Not bad. Just more prominent. very good soup overall. Lots of green onion. Nice broth. We had the "egg rolls". They are in actuality Cha Gio. Not Chinese restaurant type egg rolls. In other restaurants they are called "spring rolls" (deep fried) . Here apparently the spring rolls are the fresh uncooked rolls. The Cha Gio were good! Note--CASH ONLY. We didn't realize this until we sat down. Fortunately we had enough green paper. And there is an ATM near by per the staff. Also note the prices on the menu are not what they are charging for some things. And things look to have gotten more expensive. As example. The wonton soup is $13 on the physical in restaurant menu but $15 on our bill. And I saw an online picture of the menu of $1.95 for the egg rolls and spring rolls. They are now $6 on the current menu. This is an old school Vietnamese hole in the wall pho place. Paper napkins, plastic chop sticks and vinyl table cloths. 5/5 for what it is. My husband and I really enjoy a bahn mi and are always on the lookout for a restaurant that does a good job on one. Unfortunately, this was not our place for a repeat trip for a bahn mi. The flavors were lacking and the bread was quite dry. We also got a pork/chicken vermicelli which was also a bit of a let down. The flavors were more bland that we would have liked. The restaurant is dated, but that's not to say food in a dated restaurant can't be good!! Just a note. I think we'd be willing to try Tram's again, since the general population seems to like it. Came here to get some hot soup on a cold day and we ended up coming during their last hour thinking that they closed at 10pm on a Sunday and the sign on their door says they close at 8:30 which we were already too close to hitting as we arrived around 8:15pm. We went inside to clarify of the time that they actually close since we had two different information, and they had welcomed us in as they actually close at 9pm. We were the only ones in there considering it was the last hour of service, and the owners were super friendly. This was my first time having pho in Pittsburgh after moving here from california, and i can say that it def hit the spot. the broth was light and very homemade which made it super comforting and delicious. Food here is good, this review is about rude service. I was berated by the person running things when I pointed out that they made an error on my bill and overcharged me for the two dishes we ordered. He told me loudly in front of other diners that everything is very expensive and they have to increase their prices. I for the record am fine with that, I was not complaining to him about the price, just that the prices on their menu and the prices they put on my bill did not match. They need to fix that, basic restaurant stuff, and absolutely my right to pay what is advertised and not what they feel like putting on my bill that day. Anyway, my pointing this out (nicely), turned him instantly angry and I was treated disrespectfully. Among other things, he said "not friendly" and stomped around. I kept my cool because I was with my young son, but dang, I have never been treated that way by a restaurant owner. I won't come back there again, and I was upset enough to write this negative review, which will hurt this business. Also they need to clean better, it's dirty in the dining area, lots of food splashed on the walls, etc.). Please learn from this and be nice. I came here for dinner with four other friends at 7pm on a Saturday night and we were able to get seated right away. Their Bún bò huế was as delicious as I remembered and everyone else enjoyed their food for the most part. The only critique I have is that I'm not sure what dish the Saigon soup was supposed to be (they sometimes put Americanized names on the menu for dishes) but we were not a fan of that because it was pretty bland. This would be a 3 1/2 star review if I could. This place came highly recommended, so I seriously wanted to love it. I Vietnamese food. But Trm'a is just ok. The fresh spring rolls - we got veggie and shrimp - were fresh and somewhat flavorful. I really wanted more basil in it. But the runny peanut sauce was more disappointing. We got #17 vermicelli w/ chicken. The vermicelli was thicker than I'd ever had, and the sauce lacked the zing that I've had in other vermicelli bowls. The whole dish was just ok. It pains me to give a bad review to this place that clearly has heart. The father/son duo running the place were really working their tails off. We'll go back and try it again, for sure. read more

My wife works on Penn Avenue and drives by here basically daily, but this was the first time we stopped in after more than four years living and working in Pittsburgh! It's nice to try a new place and support local business, but I will say we weren't blown away by the experience. For our visit we ordered a pork banh mi sandwich, and a pork/chicken vermicelli noodle dish. The banh mi was just OK--the flavors were underwhelming and the bread was old and dried out. I'm used to getting a chewy bread that is fresh and toppings that come with a slightly stronger flavor profile. The pork/chicken vermicelli was also just OK, as the spice and flavors seemed to be lacking and I unfortunately found a black hair (my whole family has brown hair), mixed in with the dish. Since we had ordered our food to go and brought it home, I didn't seek any recourse for this and just threw away the remaining bites. read more

Oh yes... it's early Fall, and you know what that means! Time for PHO!!!! I'll admit, I've not been here since 2018 or so, mainly because of the pandemic and being super busy with work, etc. The Temperature dropped down, and we definitely had the lightbulb go off in our minds, thus, the hunger for pho began. We did take out this time, since we are still trying to be fairly careful regarding COVID-19. It was super easy to call the restaurant and make an order, and we went to pick it up. We were very pleased to see that this establishment takes the pandemic seriously, as they have increased the distance between their indoor tables, and have plexiglass screens for protection of patrons and their employees alike. With regards to the food, I'm happy to report that nothing is changed - it is still awesome. Pho, vermicelli, spring rolls, and fried rice are our favorites, but everything is delicious here. This is my favorite place to get pho in Pittsburgh. Reasonably priced I would say but it is cash only so make sure you bring cash. There's also an atm right by the doors. There's usually an old man taking orders who is a bit curt but is cute haha. I think he doesn't know a lot of English. It's very hole in the wall kind of place, nothing fancy. But pho is great! Tram's is a family run Vietnamese restaurant and has been open in the same location for at least 20 years, which is the last time I came here (as a baby). They are cash only, but they do have an ATM in case you forget. Their menu is small and includes classic dishes like pho, bun bo hue, broken rice, etc. I ordered bo bun hue, which is a spicy beef soup noodle. The elderly man taking orders highly recommended it, and he was right--it was phenomenal (and very spicy). The fresh spring rolls were packed with pork and shrimp and delicious. The Thai tea tasted a bit watered down. The crispy egg noodles needed a little sriracha and hoisin to flavor it. We also ordered a banh mi to go, which had pork slices, cucumber, jalapeño, pickled carrot and daikon, and Vietnamese mayo. This was amazing and I highly recommend it. My only complaint is that the food takes a while to come out. Apart from that, I really enjoyed the food here. Their small shop located on Penn Ave makes it convenient for shopping at local stores after your meal. read more

Hadn't been to Tram's in ages, but decided to go back one day when another pho option was takeout only. I was surprised they were still open. Since I last wrote, Tram's has gotten more competition for Vietnamese food on Penn Avenue, most notably Ineffable about two blocks away. Ineffable mostly serves bahn mi but also has pho and bubble tea and coffee on the menu. It was a lunch on a weekday. My friend and I were the first to walk in at Tram's and were the only customers there for the entirety of the meal. Got pho and spring rolls as I have before, only knowing after reading my last review from nearly 8 years ago. They were basically the same as I remember. It's decent comfort food. Gotta add some hot sauce to the pho to give it a kick, haha. The biggest change to me was the decor. The tackiness of before stuck out in my mind, but it's much more muted now. No more plastic table clothes. It's still cash only. My friend and I decided to walk down the street for bubble tea at Ineffable afterwards, and the environment change there was stark. It was very busy, nearly all the tables there were taken. My friend said, "We should've eaten here," but I was glad to go back to Tram's again. I've been in search for some good pho in PGH since I moved here. The search is over my friends. Tram's got a solid pho for you that will satiate all your cravings for hot bowl of noodle soup during the harshest winter days and the gloomiest rainy days. I got the Hanoi beef pho. It did not have as much meat as I'm used to getting. But the broth is solid. Which I care more about. Hello fellow Yelpers! Unfortunately for us Trams isn't our kind of place for Pho. The broth is too salty and tastes like they out a little too much msg. We got the beef and chicken pho alongside the spring rolls. The spring rolls weren't bad, and the pho is just ok as commented above. We preferred the taste of two sisters though they have new ownership and name now, and it's been a while since we've been there. Compared to other pho places we've had this one is on the disappointing side for us. The service was nice, there is a language barrier as the man who served us speaks mostly Vietnamese, but he was still nice and patient trying to cross the language barrier. For that we give a middling three stars, but the food is around a two star for us. The store itself is a typical Asian style restaurant and could use a little elbow grease in some corners, but clean enough overall. We were craving some pho so after some Yelp research, we settled on coming to Tram's for an early dinner. There wasn't a ton of people sitting inside but definitely a lot of people ordering takeout. - Saigon Soup - Not sure what this soup was supposed to be but the chicken flavor was pretty prominent. - Rice Noodle - This seems to be the watered down version of the pho hanoi soup. Still pretty good, especially the rice noodles, but wish the broth was a bit stronger. - Pho Hanoi Soup - Usually they just call it just pho, but I will say that this was probably the best soup that they had and the most close tasting to pho. The beef broth was really rich but I do wonder if you ordered meat other than beef will the broth change. Wasn't a very big fan of the bean sprouts because it didn't feel very fresh. Overall, I wouldn't exactly consider Tram's Kitchen as authentic but for Pittsburgh, it's not bad. The only reason why it's a three-star is that the ingredients other than the soup are just okay. read more

My husband was in the mood for pho, and Trams has been on the list for awhile. It was hands down the most flavorful broth we've ever tasted. He had the beef and meatball pho. I had the bún bò hué and it was also phenomenal, has a good kick of spice if you're into that. And we each had an egg roll. The sauce that they give you with the egg roll was also excellent.
