We decided to check out this new dim sum restaurant around 11 a.m. It seemed like the staff wasn't fully ready yet, and a few servers weren't in uniform, so I'm guessing they're still in a soft-opening phase. That said, everyone was very friendly and attentive -- they kept refilling our tea without us even asking. The restaurant itself is clean and nicely decorated, with comfortable seating. They offer complimentary regular tea, or you can upgrade to their specialty teas for about $8. I was a bit surprised that, for a dim sum restaurant, they don't offer steamed rice rolls or chow mein. Their dim sum menu is relatively small compared to other places. We ordered five dim sum dishes: 1. Steamed Spareribs - Flavorful and well-marinated. I was pleasantly surprised that they used aged orange peel and fermented olives, a traditional touch that's rarely seen in dim sum places nowadays. 2. Har Gow (Shrimp Dumplings) - The filling was fresh and flavorful without that frozen shrimp taste, but the skin was a bit too soft and mushy. 3. Taro Puff - Unfortunately, this one was disappointing. The crust wasn't flaky enough, and the filling tasted unbalanced -- slightly sour, possibly from too many mushrooms and not enough meat. 4. Gold and Silver Turnip Cake - The dish wasn't exactly as described on the menu since it came with one piece each of taro cake, coconut mochi cake, and turnip cake. I was excited to try this new Chinese restaurant in Belmont because they offer Peking duck. The staff was friendly and enthusiastic, but the service was extremely slow. We arrived at noon and didn't leave until an hour and a half later, which is unusually long for dim sum. The Peking duck was disappointing. The skin was not crispy, the slicing was not done in the traditional style, and the flavor was very mild. I would not recommend it. The remaining duck prepared salt and pepper style was greasy and completely flavorless. We tried a variety of dim sum, and overall it was below average. It feels like the restaurant is trying to position itself as a higher-end dim sum place with more unique shapes and flavors like you see in Asia, but the execution just isn't there yet. Overall, the dim sum was about a two out of five. One thing I did appreciate was the electric teapot stand that keeps the tea hot. Unfortunately, the tea itself had almost no flavor, even after asking for another tea bag. The restaurant is brand new, nicely decorated, and has plenty of parking. We pre-ordered the Peking Duck and reserved our table in advance, but the experience was incredibly frustrating. When we sat down, we were told the duck would be ready in 10 minutes. After waiting for 40 minutes, the staff informed us they had only just started preparing it when we arrived and it would take another 10 minutes. Their excuse was that they thought we had "canceled" our reservation, which is completely false--I had only called earlier to add one more person to our party. If there was a delay, they should have been honest from the start instead of making us wait nearly an hour for food we had already booked. Advice to others: If you are coming here specifically for the duck, double-check the wait time multiple times, even if you have a confirmed reservation. As others already pointed out, Boiling Beijing in San Bruno has very good pecking duck, and we've had it dozens of times, strongly recommend! They are also very accommodating with preferences; they easily dialed back the salt level on our pea shoots in superior broth while keeping the flavor savory. If you visit, the Peking duck is a solid order. You get a generous amount of meat and crispy skin that fills two plates, which is a better value than other spots around here. The dim sum is also a highlight. The Sichuan red oil wontons and the shrimp and pork siu mai are well-made, and the Triple Blessings steamed platter is good and fairly priced.
