Went there with my pal on a Sunday. They had some sort of program going on where there were only a certain pre-selected number of drinks available. We were after a whiskey cocktail, and were told that one of the drinks was closest to a traditional whiskey coattail profile, such as a Manhattan. We were given the drinks, $25 each. They were putrid. Literally peanuts was the only flavor going on. Like liquid sweet peanuts over crushed ice. Twenty five bucks for that mess. Whatever. It was a joke. It was actually kind of funny. They got these young kids behind the bar training for these event type programs or something. Nasty drink. Kid had no idea what she was doing. Fifty bucks for experimenting with peanut liqueurs. The menu can be confusing since it's themed after an art gallery, but every drink in the pamphlet section is what's currently in rotation. It was the zodiac drink with gin, black sesame, pineapple, and palo Santo. Do note that if you come at night on a weekend you're looking at an hour wait to get in, then an extremely packed bar. I'd heard that Trick Dog had some of the best drinks in the city, but you truly have to try it to believe it. And I believe it. First tip, if you're going for the first time, try to come more during the happy hour/daytime as opposed to the nigh time. When we first came, it was so busy (the outside section wasn't open) and the cocktail menu was so complicated on first glance, that we decided to leave. My boyfriend and I returned on a Saturday afternoon, and although there were definitely still people there, there were some spots at the bar and we were able to chat with the bartenders. Let me first start with the bartenders, they were SO INCREDIBLY KIND. They were always asking us if we needed anything, and provided some incredible recommendations. We got the Pantone, Trick Dog Airways, and the Mural Project (the latter was recommended to me from the bartender after I told him I liked a fruity drink that wasn't too sweet). They were all AMAZING. My two standouts were the Pantone and the Mural Project, both very fruity yet complex in flavor, with an extra acidic punch to not make the cocktail too sweet. My boyfriend's favorite was the Trick Dog Airways, which was a classic tiki drink with a little bit of a complex twist. Can't wait to come back and try the rest of the menu, as well as chat with the bartenders some more. Definitely the best in the city. read more

I got one called the joy of cocktails and the tattoo but depending on when you go, they prob won't have those options available. I also had a sip of another one but totally forgot the name of it. Being a noob, I had a hard time finding this place initially, but the super friendly doorman ensured me I was in the right place. I love the way they do their cocktail menu like an art gallery brochure; it was super fun to peruse and select the perfect drink. That absinthe concoction is always the star of the bar when I have been there - people rant and rave about it all night. One of my personal favorites on the menu is that Porn Star Shot, hot damn! A question: I had one of the drinks from the calendar with the dogs - how do I get that calendar because I had a drink off of there that blew my mind! I've stopped by here twice since moving out to the Bay Area- once last year and most recently last night. Yesterday, I stopped by with a friend to catch up after several years and grab some drinks. We got there fairly early (around 5PM) and the place wasn't too crowded at all. There was plenty of room on the bar floor and the dining area was mostly empty. My Friend and I were able to grab a table upstairs without much trouble and we were promptly seated and asked for our order. We each ordered a drink - I got a cokcktail called the Chinatown (which is a new drink based on the Museum Themed Menu they have right now) and my friend got a non-alcoholic cocktail. We also shared an order of fries. The cocktail I got was surprisingly good. When I initially got it , I admit it really did smell like it was straight up tequila. But as I took a sip it was surprisingly sweet and the harshness of the tequila was really mellowed out. Also, the addition of Chinese Five Spice was a nice touch. The Fries were also solid - they were a little crunchier than anticipated but it worked well. Also the dipping sauces they came with were really good (especially the garlic/ horseradish dipping sauce) As the evening went on the place got more crowded so I'm glad we got there when we did. Ambiance wise, Trick dog is very nice. The downstairs area gives a typical cocktail bar vibe - seats at the bar and some standing tables around the perimiter of the floor. Upstairs is quaint with several table in a lofted area looking down at the bar. The decor around the bar as a whole is also cute and entertaining. As time goes by the bar as whole gets dimly lit, surrounded by candle light and ambient light from the bar and it actually gives a really cozy feeling. Two other things I'd like to highlight are the menu and the service. The menu('s) here at trick dog are super fun. When I visited last year, the theme was poetry - each cocktail was affiliated with a poem. This past visit, the menu was Museum oriented. Seeing a place taking initiative and having some creative fun with their menu is really inspiring and enjoyable. Also the staff here are very friendly and accomodating. The bartenders are super well versed and knowledgable on what they are working with and are always open to listening to requests and providing reccomendations. The serving staff are also very patient and friendly. All in all, Trick Dog is definitely a stand out cocktail bar in the Mission. Both times I've gon, I had a great experience and I'd highly reccomend Trick Dog to anyone in the area. read more

The bar area is small, so this is not a great place for big groups. There is an upstairs area as well if you're ordering food. There's also outdoor seating (relic of pandemic days), but for pricey drinks, not the best ambience out there. The cocktails are $16 each. I would recommend the Zodiac (gin/floral/fresh) and the Whole Dog (guava/creamy/sweet). Would not get Broadsides or Trick Dog Airways again. Trick dog has so much personality, and lives up to its hype. I went with a couple friends on a Friday after work, and at around 6pm we were able to grab a table since we were ordering food. The theme was pirates, and the decorations were so detailed, it was so much fun to discover all the little art pieces and concepts that the team added. It was also very cool to see the old menus hung up on the wall, adding to the personality of the bar right when you walk in. We ordered one of the non alcoholic drinks and royal fortune, both of which were really good. Unfortunately, our waiter mixed up our friend's order and brought a meat hot dog when she ordered a veggie one. She noticed the difference after finishing the meal and asked our waiter if the right dish was brought out, he immediately came back and apologized for the mistake, offering to take it off our bill. We did appreciate how quickly he resolved the problem, but it was unfortunate since my friend is vegetarian. I am looking forward to seeing what Trick Dog's next theme is! read more

Tldr; A perfect example of how taste and creativity can be completely hampered by ambiance and service. Trick Dog is quirky and deliberate, offering up drinks that can often times rival higher end locales like PCH, Alembic, etc but you won't keep coming here unless you are ok with a hot messy ambiance with long waits, limited seating. I've been coming here for years and admittedly I even lived across the street for a year. Mission locales readily and often line up outside this unassuming small bar for the closest thing to what I call a rotating "cocktail experience". What I mean by that is that Trick Dog changes their menu every month, and when I mean change, I mean they hand create an artistically flaired new design with an entire new theme. Some months it's a tiki bar. Other months it's a classical bar. Some months it's a menu just based on Pantones colors. It's goofy, it works, it's their entire x factor. The great thing is, the flavors are equally creative, and good. Drinks are made at a high level, and they employ up to 6 bartenders in a very miniscule 25ft bar. It's hot, it's sweaty, it's lively, it's loud. It's like an East Coast bar in the village on a Friday night, all. the. time. Now some of you may enjoy that level of density but in my opinion I think it's just really poorly done. They could do so much more with the space to open it up and make it less of an orgy and more of a controlled environment. For instance they have an entirely available upstairs they never use, which is for private events. Why can't you just open it up to everyone? Idk. Listen, I like the drinks, but there's about 20 other places I could go to with fantastic drinks where I can hear the person next to me, order a drink without fighting for bar space (and waiting 15-20 minutes), and find ample parking (which the parking around that neighborhood is sketchy, trust me). Did I mention the line? Yeah, people wait outside to get in here also. Sometimes 30 minutes! Lol. At the end of the day, a Pantone menu and good flavor isn't enough to wow me when I'm crushed by the environment, but the art nerds may disagree with me here. You be the judge. read more

Truck dog has often featured in the top 50 interesting cocktail menus in the USA so my friends and I had to check it out Ambience : it features 2 floors , the bottom is an bar with several standing tables and the top section houses a few tables for their restaurant style meals and drinks. The lines move real quick so you don't have to wait too long. All of the drinks were well made. The trick dog airways features a biscoff biscuit in it and is really refreshing. The tourist guide includes a playful cotton candy along the outer rim . The 24carat is definitely a go to for the espresso lovers. The standout drink was definitely the zodiac with subtle notes of pineapple complimenting the gin. Overall a fun bar with interesting cocktails to hang out with friends !! read more

It's been nearly 10 years since I first went to Trick Dog and this recent experience was much better than the first one! We got there around 10pm, went inside and ordered drinks at the bar, and got a seat at their parklet outside. Their TanTrick dog menu was so cute and the drinks were awesome. Some favorites of the night were: 1] Down Dog - Mezcal, martini apertivo, papaya, vanilla, harissa, cinnamon, lemon and served on the rocks. 2] Cat/Cow - Gin, makrut limepop, genepy ie camois, white sesame, coconut, lime served on crushed ice. Which came in a cute mini milk jar glass with a fun straw. 3] Cobra - Tequila, strawberry solstice, falernum, pandan, marigold, bee pollen, lemon served on crushed ice. I like the addition of their parklet outside, it was a beautiful night and there were plenty of seats. The indoor part of the bar isn't anything particularly special, but they do have tables upstairs and late night bites if you're looking for something to eat. My boyfriend and I stumbled across this bar when we were walking around the area after dinner. The interior is a little hodge podge of tiki bar and disco decorations. We ordered the dorada (mezcal, prickly pear) and the floriblanca (tequila, mango, coconut). Both drinks were pretty good and didn't taste too spirit forward. It can get pretty loud and packed on a Saturday night, but luckily there's upstairs seating that's quieter for talking. We had the Absinthe cocktail (no absinthe) - very refreshing, the Proof, and Shave 'em dry. Also ordered the thrice-cooked fries ($9) which were delicious. Seating was a bit challenging so feels to me like the kind of place to come with someone you know well vs. a meetup. i happened to be in the neighborhood and wanted to grab some drinks before dinner. there was no sign but there was a picture of a dog on the ground! :) i love it already. they have indoor and outdoor seating available. they will check your ID and vaccination cards as well. we came like 30mins after they opened. i saw there were already some people outside and indoor having drinks. we sat at the bar. their drink menu was super interesting. it seems like it was divided into four sections. they explained in the bottom basically what the four sections: rebirths/renaissances that followed different kind of plagues. i love gin, so the bartender recommended twenty/twenty. this drink was so strong, but it was really good! i thought the creative expressions section was pretty cool since the first thing that came to mind was ooooo! ninja turtles!! but maybe it was more than that... also name of italian painters :D we ended up getting raphael, comes with a gummy worm. it was kind of too sour for my liking. i def would come back here again. i read and heard that their food menu is pretty good as well! i am def planning to bring my dog next time :) super dog friendly! they even have treats ready by the entrance. and i met a cutie lab! i also wonder if their drink menu changes. that would be pretty cool if they change menu themes. the bartender we had was super nice as well and attentive. it was getting busy but he still managed to check up on us. read more

This place has been on my list of bars to visit for a while. Upon entering it can be confusing as to what is happening if you do not have a reservation. The menu is very unique in that it serves as a gallery map of exhibits/memorabilia around the bar dedicated to a drink on the menu. (I ordered the zodiac cocktail which corresponds to an astrology wheel on the wall.) The drink was very good and was full of flavors. The other drinks on the menu look and sound like good options as well. The bar staff is also friendly and the lively environment certainly adds to the art gallery vibe.
