This is my first time going to Tropicale. I heard they are very busy on weekends but we went on a weekday and it was pretty empty. We got Pina-Coladas (Virgin and Non-Virgin), both great and refreshing on a hot day. The tacos were also very good, not great but pretty good and the prices affordable. WTF is with the staff here? Not sure if it's the heat or just their Portland "nice", but every interaction we had in the few minutes we were here sucked. I asked a guy if he knew where the bathroom was and he said "I have no idea." I asked another and he's like, "I think it's down there. Not sure if it's locked." Gee, thanks. I'm so glad this bar opened up even in the midst of this current pandemic. It's refreshing and encouraging at the same time. The challenges and obstacles presented this year would seem almost too difficult for new business to open it's doors. Tropicale is brave, like it's menu. They offer exotic, tropical drinks and tasty small plates. Seating stretches out onto the streets a bit to accommodate more people. Parking is available up and down the street. Social distancing is the practice and staff is respectfully enforcing. Expect an experience when you stop in at Tropicale. We dropped in full from dinning at another restaurant, expecting to have a drink or two, but ended up ordering tacos and ceviche, and a few drinks. read more

Went here with a friend last night. At first the long line was off putting but service was fast and we moved quickly. Staff was friendly. Tacos were simple but delicious 10/10. Plantains were extremely thin cut and hard. Chips and guac were good, could have used more spice. Drinks were delicious but not enough to wait in the long line for another round. read more

I've been at Tropicale a couple of times now and I will continue going back. The drinks are always delicious and getting a pina colada in a pineapple always cheers me up. The maduros was really good as well. You feel like you're on vacation every time you come here. read more

Wow wow wow! This place is AWESOME. Best piña colada in town. Ceviche was fresh and filling and the tostada was delicious. It is a little pricey but for the quality of food and drinks, it's well worth it. There is also a sushi place and sandwich place next door so you can grab whatever food/drinks you want and sit in the communal open area out front. HIGHLY RECOMMEND read more

Each person involved with my order was very accommodating, considerate and helpful as I navigated obtaining amazing food without my allergens present. Amazing vibe and the food is fantastic. The piña colada was delicious and not overly sweet! I got the camarones tacos and my boyfriend got the adobada tacos. We would recommend both! There was a line and all tables were full when we arrived but the line moved quickly and tables opened up shortly after we ordered. Masks are required while not at your table eating and with a lot of outside tables, this felt like a great place to enjoy some food and drinks during the time of Covid. The drinks were tasty and fun, we tried the pina colada in the whole pina, the spicy mango margarita (not too spicy and not too sweet!) and the tropicalia. We ordered a variety of food options, all delicious and came out really quickly! Our favorites were the Tostones and the Camarones and Cochinita tacos. We were there celebrating a friend's birthday and the owner was sweet enough to bring our friend a birthday drink! Really awesome to see the owner taking food out to tables and connecting with the customers and people from the community. We'll be back to try some more food and revisit some of the drinks we loved! read more

I feel like this place is way overhyped for what it is. The pina coladas were just OK. My partner didn't even finish theirs. The fish and shrimp tacos were just Ok. The plantains were over cooked. We did really enjoy the octopus however. That was a standout dish. read more

Post COVID it's difficult to know the rules of engagement at different venues. I walked into Tropicale for the first time and was quickly met with staff questioning why I was inside. I was utterly confused as I didn't know walking into a restaurant was inappropriate. I said I was looking for a menu and was told I can go outside and look. The response felt, at the least, unfriendly and unwelcoming, at the most, drastic. I left and continued to other restaurants at this spot where walking in was acceptable. (Friendship Kitchen was helpful and friendly!) Maybe this person was having a bad day. I am not a big Yelp reviewer but felt inclined to let folks know...If you go there, by all means, do NOT walk in the building. Want y'all to be able to get to the tacos and drinks if that's what is feeling good to your palate. (Also, totally willing to accept maybe I missed the signs telling me to not enter and while that may be true, I still don't feel the response was warranted.) read more

The tone of the 2 staff members I interacted with was less than pleasant. I walked up to place my order, apparently the expectation is that you know what you want before approaching the register. I may not have seen a sign with instructions but I was felt less then welcome when told of my wrongdoing. I received my chips and went back in to simply see if there are salsas available. I was immediately approached as I stepped in and felt like I was being reprimanded for coming in. Are these practices Covid precautions? I applaud any place that can thrive during a pandemic. Tropicale's pina coladas (with a pineapple used in lieu of a glass) seems to be just what travel hungry Portlanders are craving. If I closed my eyes I could just imagine myself sunning on a tropical island. $16 is spendy for a drink, but its quite delicious. I'm not sure how much booze is in one as I found myself barely with a buzz, but the drink is worth it. It gets crowded, but the line moves quickly, and I felt they were managing quite well in spite of you know a pandemic, social distancing, etc.. The first time we went they forgot our tacos and gave us a few free tequila shots to help us forget we were starving. The tacos were very tasty, albeit tiny. On the 2nd go I noticed they changed their price point on the tacos and it seemed much more reasonable (still tiny, but a good snack). I would love to see them expand their drink menu as we managed to try a few pisco sours on our second go and these were absolutely delicious. I like this place and definitely plan to return. Will be curious to see how they transition when the Portland winter sets in, as we will all be in dire need of pina coladas come January. read more

Absolutely loved the food and drinks here! They had a great selection of tequilas, mezcal, and frozen drinks.

Super cute outdoor bar with friendly service and reasonable prices. Get yourself a plate of tacos! A little pricey but so so good. The Tropi-Tropi was delicious, but the bartender must have had an extremely light pouring hand, so it was essentially an expensive glass of juice. Sunday afternoon crowd seemed pretty busy, but in no sense did it feel overcrowded or uncomfortable. 3.5 stars would be a more accurate rating. read more

They are phenomenal! The drinks are delicious. The location is incredible. My first time was during covid and it felt very safe! Everything is outside, seating is all spaced appropriately and the tables are cleaned and sanitized between customers. Honestly kind of bummed. I'm a smaller person. I was pretty hungry. My partner and I ordered three dishes between the two of us. I honestly laughed when I saw them. The portion size was soooooo small for the price. I wish I had the foresight to take a picture, but I was starving. They all tasted good but wow, this is Portland. If you're charging $11 for two tiny pieces of plantains with some mushrooms and guacamole on top... $9 for a tiny arep with some beans.... yikes... not coming back for the food... it's not enough that it tastes good, they need to increase portion sizes or lower prices. read more

Tropicale has a decent amount of cocktails! I got their piña colada, along with tropi-tropi. The piña colada was very good, but got a little sweet after the first few sips.
