Roasted and fried pork shoulder - a bit crisped but not dry, great flavor. It came with bannann peze (like a plantain cake), avocado, pickled cabbage and radish. Eat everything together for tons of flavor and textures - Peanut creamed greens: collared greens with peanut and coconut cream. This was definitely the most interesting dish of greens I've had - Head on prawns: I wish I could buy the grilled pineapple and African pepper sauce it sat on. I wiped up every last bit of that sauce - Epis brined chicken: wood fired half chicken, served over fresh grilled corn and a corn puree. The chicken had great smoke flavor, even on the breast. Numerous reviews warned that kann's atmosphere would be loud, parking around the area would be difficult, the double cooked pork dish would be dry, service would be abysmal, tips could even be manipulated, items could go missing when leftovers are packed away by the staff -- the list of complaints go on and on. I am happy to report that most of the aforementioned criticism are not substantiated, and additionally, if you come having done a little bit of research, you can definitely have a great meal. To address the elephant in the room right away, kann is loud. You'll have to speak up in order to speak to party members sitting across the table, but you're certainly not yelling. The acoustics of the restaurant are simply poor, and there's nothing that can be done about it. That said, it's not loud enough to the point where you'd want to consider noise-cancelling headphones or any nonsense like that -- that's just grossly exaggerated. Our server about our spice tolerance before going over the menu, warning us of any items that may be too spicy for us. My party only enjoys mildly spicy food so we were advised to avoid the stewed eggplant, the cauliflower, and the akra. Although we skipped the first two, we ultimately went with an order of akra. Alongside the akra, we also ordered the plantain brioche, griyo, diri ak sos pwa, peanut creamed greens, carrots, chicken, and baked Haiti. This ended up being plenty of food, with leftovers to take home. I would advise ordering a little bit less than you might have planned because you'll definitely want to save room for dessert. I won't dive into each and every one of the dishes, but my favorites of the night included the coffee rubbed carrots, epis brined chicken, the peanut creamed greens, and the plantain brioche with the epis butter. $22 for a few roasted carrots may sound crazy, but this dish will seriously change your mind about the humble carrot. The carrots were roasted to absolute perfection. The ends of the carrots were charred and shriveled, yet the body of the carrots were still juicy and had a satisfying amount of bite to them. The spiced cashews provide a sweet crunchy contrast to the salty, savoriness of the carrots. If there's one dish off the hearth section of the menu you have to order, it's this dish. One order of the epis brined chicken is more than enough for a party of four to share. Every bite that I had was moist and tender, and the chicken skin is incredibly crispy. The chicken is great on its own, but the roasted corn on the bottom is a great complement to the flavor profile of the chicken. Kann really does a great job contrasting roasted items with an accompanying item that's refreshing. The plantain brioche arrived first and takes on the form of a cornbread muffin. It's not the moistest piece of bread that I ever had, but I thoroughly enjoyed the subtle flavor of plantain. The brioche had a bouncy, spongy texture to it that made it the perfect vessel for the epis butter. Make sure you guard your epis butter because our waitress actually took ours away (without asking) after each person had moved their piece onto their individual plate. The dish I was most hesitant on ordering given the extremely mixed opinions on Yelp was the griyo twice cooked pork. Dubbed the national dish of Haiti, it was hard to pass this up since it was specifically recommended by our server. This starter is plated beautifully and is visually stunning between the red hue of the pikliz, the vibrant green of the avocado, and the yellow of the bannann peze. With the pork, the fattier pieces are melt in your melt tender while the leaner parts have a bit of resistance to them. That said, I didn't have any pieces that I would truly consider dry. I would urge you to take a chance on this dish as I did because you may end up being pleasantly surprised. Besides, when else are you going to be able to try out the national dish of Haiti? Last but not least, their baked Haiti was an absolute star. The attention to details in constructing the dessert is seriously impressive. The charred meringue carries bitter notes that you would find with a fire-roasted marshmallow. This flavor is a wonderful contrast to the spiced pineapple chunks hidden in the center of the dessert. The dessert is definitely on the sweeter side so sensitive palettes may want to enjoy the dessert with a coffee in hand. It's true that the tip options at the end of the meal are unlike anything you've likely seen -- with pre-calculated amounts of 25%, 30% and 35%, but I wouldn't feel pressured to select one of these options; tip whatever amount you feel comfortable with.
