Such a fun spot for good Korean food in Temescal! Would recommend coming with a group so you can try more dishes. I've been meaning to come by here to try their raw marinated crab, and finally had a chance to do so last Saturday. My party of 3 came for an early dinner around 6, and it was quite empty when we arrived. I think this spot is definitely more popular for late night drinks and food. Because it was early, we found free street parking easily a block away. I loved the vibes here. It's a large space with plenty of tables and booths, and it didn't feel cramped at all. They really blast the music (mostly American pop songs while we were here) so I loved the ambiance. The menu has a good variety of options (not much for vegetarians though, sorry!). I appreciated that there were pictures and clear descriptions for every dish, so even if you're not super familiar with Korean food like I am, it was easy to decide what to get. We shared: Soy sauce raw crab ($35) - this was SO good! I didn't see it on the menu, so we had to ask for it directly from the server. They have both spicy and non-spicy versions of this, and we opted for the non-spicy version because I'm a spice wimp. It comes with gloves for everyone, which is very necessary since it gets messy to squeeze the crab meat out. While the raw crab meat is creamy and tasty, it is quite salty, so you'll definitely want to eat it with rice. We actually ordered a second bowl of rice for an extra 2 bucks because we found one to be not enough. Chicken and green onion muchim ($18.95) - pan fried chicken served with a spicy chili sauce and a wasabi-based sauce. I didn't like it that much as I found the chicken a bit bland without the chili sauce Korean fried chicken - garlic and pepper ($28.95) - solid KFC, what can I say? My friends and I were all pretty impressed with this dish and devoured it. Also, portions are huge since you're getting a whole chicken fried. We all really enjoyed the food here. Came here for a friends bday and they accommodated us pretty well. We had a large party and broke up the checks but it really wasn't an issue for the servers, which I really appreciated. This place had such good vibes inside too so it was the perfect place to go for a bday. Now the food - let me tell you it is BOMB! We got the Pork bbq with cheese (10/10). I had a great time at Hanshin Pocha! We came on a Wednesday night and were seated instantly by the server. The place was dim-lit, I was nervous it would be bar-like but the place was still pretty open. We ordered the Chicken Feet with Rice Balls, BBQ Pork with Cheese, Chicken with Scallion Salad, Stir Fry Seafood, and Soy Raw Marinated Crab. This was my first time trying raw marinated crab, and it was SO GOOD! The crab was cold and had a nice sweet soy flavor that paired so well with rice. It was jelly-like and melted in your mouth. I also really liked the Chicken with Scallion Salad. They had a chili oil and wasabi dressing on top which made the entire dish so much more elevated. The chicken itself was grilled and tender. I thought the BBQ pork was also very well done. It was spicy and the cheese helped add more creaminess to complement the spice. However, it was heavier and I was only to take a bite or two. The stir fry seafood was also good, but it wasn't anything special. The seafood were flavored well with this soy-based sauce, and the noodles were crispy. The chicken feet were not my favorite though. It was incredibly spicy, which is fine, but the feet had too much of a chew to it. We always go here and it's our go to Korean spot in Oakland. We've even shot a food review here and the service is always top notch. But today, our first time meeting and being served by Daniel and he's got to be one of the best servers we've been helped by. Always attentive and always checking in at the RIGHT TIME. This is definitely a poppin place to be at, it's in north Oakland so the area isn't too bad. Waited maybe 20 mins for a table. Make sure you come here early! We got here around 8ish, because it does get super busy here! This place is has a lot of young folks here eating and chatting it up. It's not too far from UC Berkeley so I def understand how this could be the go to late night spot. We only ordered the marinated crabs because I haven't had any in a long time and was so happy to see them offer this. The spicy marinated crab was so good!! Disappointed in the Tiktok advertising We came here early on a Friday night. There is no way to call you back so you have to wait there. There were about 6 parties ahead of us. We were excited to try a new place but were incredibly disappointed. The pork and cheese came out 30 mins after we ordered but we expected a wait since it was so busy. We were confused why the raw marinaded crabs were taking so long because they are supposed to be marinated the night before to make it safe to consume. The owner wrote in another review that they ran out of items that needed to be prepped on the fly.I hope they didnt serve us crab they prepped before serving but the flavor was so light i think they might have. The other food took a long time to come and when it finally did the female waiter with glasses said something rude to us about waiting for all the food. I didn't realize that "pocha" is bar food. I was initially surprised by the limited menu and lack of KBBQ meats. Most items are also quite spicy and/or salty, but it makes sense since the food is meant to be paired with drinks. We ordered the kimchi fried rice, the whole fried chicken, spicy bbq pork with cheese, and the donkatsu. Everything came out piping hot, and was delicious! Hands down one of the best places in Oakland for Korean comfort food! I came here because I was dying to try spicy marinated crab -- it did not disappoint at all. The crab is so soft and tasty, perfect to eat with rice and seaweed. The spicy chicken feet were tender and fell right off the bone, just a bit spicy but really satisfying. Hanshin Pocha brings a new Korean bar/restaurant experience to the Temescal neighborhood in Berkeley that was a little underwhelming. From the Korean celebrity chef Baek Jong Won, Hanshin Pocha is the fourth of the chain but first in NorCal. I had heard good things about the restaurant in Los Angeles so I was super excited to give this place a try. On a Saturday night around 8pm, the place was busy. Luckily, my friend and I were able to get seated pretty quickly. The place has a divey feel with red lights providing the mood lighting and 90s R&B playing. The menu had typical items at a Korean bar like stews and chicken feet! They even had some more Chinese leaning dishes like seafood stir fry and jjampong (seafood stew). I wasn't particularly blown away by the food but it did seem like most of the other people were there to drink. Here is what we ate: Korean Barbeque Pork with Cheese (3/5): How can you go wrong with spicy pork paired with mild melted mozarella cheese? I liked this but it definitely felt like there was mostly fatty pieces. The table next to us ordered it and had their cheese blowtorched to get that extra char! The dish was fine, but seeing that made me wonder what could have been, Gyeran Gaesal Tag - Egg and Crab Soup - (3.5/5): Very homey dish that was surprisingly nice to have to counter the heaviness of the pork dish. Probably would also pair well with some soju. The only downside was that it was salty. Also note that the crab is the imitation crab! Given it recently opened and on a busy Saturday night, I would say they did overall well but was inconsistent. They probably need more time to get enough staff because the people working did seem to do their best. Parking is limited in the Temescal area but if you drive around you should be able to find some street parking and be able to walk over. Overall, Hanshin Pocha is a decent Korean spot that is probably better suited for drinking than it is for eating. read more

Love this place and it reminds me so much of a Korean Hof/Pocha. We got a few items with Korean rice wine (makgeolli), which was a perfect combo on a hot day. The spicy pork with cheese was balanced with the cold rice wine, made it a perfect drinking food. Oh my lord, best Korean spot I've had in the Bay Area. Everything ordered was perfect. Gizzards: garlic is so flagrant and present and so perfectly cooked not to the form of a crispy chip. Salad is a ketchup mayo mix which was surprisingly good to pair with the gizzards Pork belly: spice level was perfect to go along with the dip of the cheese making it the perfect combo. This would be perfect as a late night drinking snack -- def ordering this every time Sweet & Spicy Fried Chicken: *4/5*: The fry on this was amazing -- super crispy and yummy, even though it's covered in sauce, it's still so crunchy. The sauce was really good, but reminded me more of a Chinese sweet & sour pork sauce, it wasn't spicy at all. And they give you A LOT -- looks like a whole chicken. We took a little more than half home, and eating it as leftovers, we still couldn't finish it all. Overall, personally not a huge fan of this sauce but my friends loved it Chadol Sundubu: *2.5/5*: This tasted more like yukgaejang with tofu added to it than it tasted like sundubu. I'm going to guess this is one of those spots that is really hit or miss for some folks. We were here at 6pm on a Friday, ordered our food right away. However, by 6:30pm we had no food and the tables who were seated long after us were ordered and fed. We inquired several times to our waitress who was apologetic. By 45 minutes in, we watched as the table next to us (someone who came in 30 minutes after us) receive a bunch of the same dishes we ordered. Asked the waitress again and she was very apologetic. A man from the kitchen came out and claimed our waitress did not input our order. But she even showed us several times to confirm our order over the 45 minutes. He was really flippant about it and was like, "do you want the food or not? I can try and rush it for you." So then in about 60 minutes (1 long hour) into our experience, the same man from the back came over and served us food that we did not order! Ack. So frustrating. He asked us to show him our order on the menu so we went through it again. Another 15 minutes passed and now it's been over an HOUR since we arrived with no food. The food we did receive was indeed rushed - it was all lukewarm, and the squid was SO undercooked that it required another 20 minutes at the table to start to boil. We finally just had to leave. The waitress was nice but this place is understaffed and while they gave us 20% off for having to wait 1.5 hours for our food, the staff in the back was not very friendly. We received: 1. Spicy squid that never got cooked 2. "Spicy" pork and cheese - the pork was lukewarm and NOT spicy. Very disappointing. 3. Gizzards - so overcooked it's was like jerky and cold!! 4. Unique Korean restaurant nestled in Oakland. This place is legit and they're open for lunch on Friday and the weekends! They have stuff that is not common. It's not just the same old Kalbi or fried chicken. Soy marinated crabs were delicious. Fried gizzard was perfectly breaded and absolutely scrumptious. Fried chicken was perfectly fried, light breading on the outside, super tender flavorful chicken inside. Service was friendly and attentive Plenty of seats in the restaurant but still feels spacious instead of cramped. Definitely recommend this spot. read more
