Unfortunately, my family and I had a very disappointing experience at Ulu Kitchen. We had a 7:45pm dinner reservation, but it was not a pleasant meal and filled with many preventable errors and issues. We ordered 3 French onion soups to start. All of our soups arrived cold and by the time we were finally served our entrees, it was already 9:15pm. My party waited an hour and half for our dinner. We informed our waitress, (Bianca or Haleka) and complained that all 3 soups were already cold. One of our members opted to cancel his soup entirely because we had already waited so long. Bianca did not apologize, but instead replied that there was a "large party" ahead of us. She took back our cold soups and brought back three new ones. She then nonchalantly told my family member who cancelled his that if he didn't want the replacement, they would just "throw it away." Okay... Moreover, they forgot our cutlery for the new soups, and then on top of that, they completely forgot my own entree (until I reminded Bianca), which was a burger. She looked surprised when I told her, which made it clear to me she had completely forgotten my entree. She did not apologize this time either, but brought it out after it had apparently been sitting on the counter for awhile. Meanwhile, the rest of my party was already halfway through their own dinner. Totally disappointed with our evening, we were finally able to speak with the manager about our negative dinner experience. He listened to our concerns and kindly expressed his regrets and apologies and comped our meal. Though we appreciated the manager's response, our dinner experience and the poor attitude and service of our waitress left a bad taste in our mouth. Definitely fell short of our expectations as we have had pleasant experiences at other Merriman restaurants. read more

So flavorful and filling! My wife had the classic breakfast with sausage and a side Monkeypod Mai tai flapjack. Pancakes are huge and you get 2. We ordered the zucchini and ricotta omelette, taro hash, and mai tai flapjacks. The zucchini and ricotta omelette wasn't anything special and was quite small. The taro hash was delicious with perfectly cooked runny egg yolks and was very flavorful. The Mai tai flapjacks were slightly crispy on the edges and not too sweet. We had an amazing night at Ulu! Loran was our server and he was awesome. Attentive, friendly, checked in on us the exact right amount. The Surf and Turf was the best meal we had all week. Filet mignon was cooked perfectly and the lobster ravioli was fantastic with that butter sauce. All in all a great value meal also in comparison to steak and lobster meals in the area. I was excited to see that Monkeypod sister's restaurant Ulu Kitchen was taking over Westin's oceanfront spot. I've visited this spot back in the day when it was Tropica and twice when it was Waicoco. Upon arriving in Maui, it worked out that we wanted an early dinner for my husband's birthday due to jet lag. We got the best of both worlds with both happy hour and dinner. From the HH menu we tried almost all the appetizers offered, tako escargot, pork potstickers and veggie quesadillas, paired with a Monkeypod Mai Tai. Those pork potstickers were so good, we ordered a second before hopping over to the dinner menu for an order of Mac Nut crusted Mahi Mahi each. Skip the long lines at Monkeypod for HH and come here instead for those same Monkeypod Mai Tais. We had such a great time, we came back two weeks later for our anniversary brunch before heading to the airport. We shared a sweet, the Monkeypod Mai Tai Flapjack topped with the lilikoi foam from that Mai Tai and a savory, Hawaiian Chilaquiles topped with kalua pork. Surprise flutes of champagne for our anniversary was a great way to start and end our Maui stay. read more

I love corn chowder and this version was so fresh but had a wonderful mouth feel with the crisp corn and al dente potatoes but the 'ulu and lemongrass really made all the difference! Lastly, the Mahi Mahi was fresh and cooked perfectly. The green beans were sautéed and delicious and you really can never go wrong with a side of rice! Our server was very attentive and the decor is beautiful. This restaurant in the Westin next to the Whalers Village shops is perfect for a date or a family night out. I've eaten at Ulu Kitchen in Maui at least four times in the last week, and Amika made such a lasting impression on me tonight that I had to leave a review for her. She is so personable, welcoming, and genuine. From the moment she greets you, her smile lights up the room, and you can just feel that she's a truly good person. She has a way of making you feel so taken care of and comfortable, and that kind of hospitality is rare. We made a reservation at Ulu Kitchen to celebrate our 10-year anniversary, hoping for a special evening -- and while parts of it were lovely, it didn't quite hit the mark we were hoping for. We noted our anniversary on the reservation, so we expected at least a small acknowledgment (a congrats card, a reserved marker, maybe a complimentary toast -- like we've experienced at similar spots in Austin). Unfortunately, nothing was mentioned. Ironically, it was the table next to us who ended up making the night feel special -- they overheard our toast to each other and sweetly bought us our first round. As for the food, we shared the octopus, pork potstickers, scallops, oysters, and the surf & turf duo (steak, lobster ravioli, mashed potatoes, and green beans). The highlight of the meal was definitely the lobster ravioli -- absolutely incredible -- and the oysters were also a standout. The main downside came with the steak. We ordered medium, but it arrived more on the rare/medium-rare side. We tried to flag our waiter for about 15 minutes, and when he finally came by, the explanation about possibly microwaving it (!) or maybe getting a new one left us feeling unsure. The steak returned pretty much unchanged, and at that point we just ate around the rarer parts since we were hungry and ready to wrap up. Unfortunately, it still didn't sit well in my stomach afterward, which was a bummer given my sensitivities. The food was incredible! Only complaint is hotel pricing, and our server was quite absent throughout many parts of the meal. Other than that, though, he was attentive and entertaining when he was at the table. Just didn't show up enough for our liking especially because it was not that busy while we were there. However, though, he had great recommendations. I got the smashed cucumber papaya salad, and it was incredible! Very refreshing and sweet and savory. I also got the coconut corn chowder, which was delicious and heavy, but in the best way. I tasted some of the crabcakes, which were incredible! From my entrée, I had the mushroom pot pie. For dessert, I had the peppered pineapple, and our table mates got the off menu ice cream sandwich that the server recommended. Both were incredible! Even when we left they were empty. One glass had greasy residue, our cocktails came only after we reminded them after main meals. I don't usually venture out to Lahaina since I live in Kula. My friend works near here and they have substantial vegetarian offerings compared to other nearby restaurants, so I chose here. I had the Ulu corn chowder, focaccia, Rosemary fries, quesadilla and veggie pot pie. Everything was delicious. I also ordered a virgin Mai Tai and it came in a cute pineapple glass with pineapple at the top - worth the $12. Service was stellar. We came at 730pm and stayed past closing time - they never came to kick us out or clear the table as a sign to leave. We were impressed. I've dined at Mama's Fish House many times, and I can confidently say this restaurant is right up to par. The filet was cooked to absolute perfection, tender and full of flavor. Their crab cakes were phenomenal--crispy on the outside, perfectly cooked on the inside, and paired with an incredible sauce that elevated every bite. The coconut crab cakes were also a standout; they weren't just coated in cheap coconut flakes but instead served with a beautifully crafted coconut sauce that complemented them perfectly. Everything about this meal impressed me beyond words. The attention to detail, the quality of ingredients, and the execution were flawless. This new place is glitchy but it has a gorgeous view & vibe, so we've come a few times. 5 stars for the view/vibe and then the food has varied 2-4 stars and the service too (except for Karen who gets 5 stars, and then Brandon and Maddox. Maddox was amazing and so much aloha!! ). First, a note about the Central European hostess. Every time we've come (even with a reservation on OpenTable), she sticks us at awful tables even when nicer ones are open. We've asked to change each time but it's super weird. The best things here are the brown butter sauce in the fish of the day, the Mai tai pancakes (which I've had twice), and the coffee. Coconut corn soup was good but with some inedible chunks. Monkeypod mai tai drink was meh. Hardly any orgeat flavor. Also our dinner server (a mainlander) was nice but so extra and the opposite of chill. Wouldn't come here again if he was our server. No offense, but people are trying to chill and hear the waves and he was the opposite of unobtrusive. The menu could be more consistent, and more servers could be like Karen and Maddox! One reason we've come here often is that it's easy to get in. As it gets busier here, if it gets as booked up as hula or Leilani's, they need to edit the menu more so every dish is a winner. read more

Let me stay off by saying.. I LOVED the food here. The lobster raviolis are something I still dream about. So why the 3 stars you ask? Well let me go back to the raviolis.. they are delicious but you get exactly 5 of them.. now I don't need a massive dinner but 5 raviolis isn't going to cut it.. especially when the dish is $44!! Next, the service... our server was nice but it took 20 minutes after we were seated for someone to even come up to us.. then another 30 to get us our water and drinks.. by the time the food came out we were pretty much starving. We wouldn't have asked if we were properly greeted. Wife asked a question and she ignored her, grabbed a menu and set it down and turned back around without saying a word. The whole time with an annoyed look on her face. It's quite possible that we interrupted her social hour with the guy at the bar. You can take your attitude and stick it where the sun don't shine. We came back for the Blueberry pancakes. Last year when we first tried them, they were 5 stars spectacular; and today they were 4 stars good. They were not as fluffy and moist as before. The blueberries did not explode in my mouth as they did the first time I had them and there was not enough ricotta this time. We had them when the restaurant first opened, But they were still good and you can't beat the ocean view. We also had a side of sausage patties that were very good. Most food has extremely tiny ration. The morning sun noodle tastes like dog food. basically 25 dollar instant noodle but worse. the pork is dry, soup is salty. Only side dish that tastes little bit better which is the smash potato. but don't get me wrong I don't recommend it. Ate two breakfast and one dinner. Horrible wait time (1 hour+). If you have no choice but to go there like I did, make sure you make your reservation ahead of time. Service is average. Dinner lacks creativity, bland, and slow. read more
