Great breakfast! I had the organic blueberry and lilikoi flapjacks. They were light and fluffy, and the lilikoi butter was amazing. My husband had the Hawaiian chilaquiles and really enjoyed them. Girl. You must come to Ulu Kitchen for HH (3-5) or dinner. Everybody's lining up for Monkey apps, but Ulu Kitchen is the sleeper hit. Located in the Westin hotel (not the Westin timeshare), Ulu has the ultimate ocean view. Tons of tables on their outdoor deck, you're sure to see the sunset. Just bring a sun hat or sunscreen because they don't have many umbrellas blocking your view. Tallie (sp?) provided excellent service and I can see why they've got her front and center. The menu is diverse and happy hour was so reasonable that we spent $68 after 3 appetizers and 2 cocktails, tax and tip. Now, HH will not take you to the sunset unless you stretch it into dinner. We had Ulu's version of a whiskey sour and a G&T. I may be the only one who comes to a tropical place and DOESN'T WANT SWEET DRINKS. But I am. So there. Tallie persuaded me away from the whiskey sour, but the hubs got it and it was SWEET. I got the G&T and honestly I should have just got a dirty martini because I'm an old man at heart. But it was a balanced G&T, if you like that sort of thing. We ordered the rosemary shoestring fries (ah-mazing and worth it! (You know what I mean, girl)), the broccoli salad (fantastic, explosion of flavors, but I wanted the broccoli a little more al dente) and the pork potstickers (delicious with the unique sauce). Ulu is one of our favorite stops for happy hour in Kaanapali. Beautiful oceanfront views from the large deck and from the bar. They serve the authentic Monkey Pod Mai Tai (in a much more peaceful ambience than at Monkey Pod around the corner) and have a variety of appetizers on the happy hour menu, which are all excellent. For non-happy hour times, we enjoy their high-end wine and liquor options on the bar side. Although we haven't tried all main menu items, the burger and macadamia crusted fresh fish are both outstanding. Staff and management are always friendly and helpful. My wife also really liked the original Eggs Benedict. I do not recommend the Omelet or the Traditional Egg breakfast. Both were subpar in my book. The service was good but a little inconsistent, sometimes we received the proper accompaniments to our dishes and other times not at all or partial. I guess this is a newer restaurant and decided to give it a shot. Vibe here is a bit more on the fancy side compared to the local restaurants, but the quality is pretty good. They don't have a large menu, but what they do have is really good. The tako escargot was excellent. Drinks are also good, but felt the mai tai wasn't that strong. Coconut Corn Chowder had great flavors and would have been perfect if it wasn't so loaded with potatoes. It's more a potato chowder. Still, it was tasty. Special 'Coconut Shrimp' was great. Crab Cackes were good, but not worth it. Burger was ridiculously salty and I can't understand why any chef would think any dish needs this much salt. Ate maybe a third and stopped. Waitress came by, asked if I was done and I mentioned the issue. She asked if I wanted something else, but the it was 20 minutes past closing time and my wife was finished so I declined. I'm dying over this veggie wrap! It's the best thing I've eaten in Maui. Super fresh, loaded with cucumber, onion, tomato, fried chick peas, sprouts, avocado, broccoli. Updating with our dinner experience! We tried getting into Monkeypod on a Saturday evening, but we were quoted a 1 hour wait so decided to pivot to Ulu, and we are so glad we did! We were seated instantly, and the ambiance in the evening was so romantic with white table lights and the sound of the ocean. Much more peaceful than the loud crowds at Monkeypod! And there was live music behind us near the pool bar. Ulu is owned by Merriman's, the same group which owns Monkeypod, so they have the signature mai tai on the menu. We got one to share, and it was delicious! Loved the lilikoi foam, which is the same one they use on the pancakes from our breakfast at Ulu, which we also loved! For an appetizer, we got the octopus escargot, which was such an interesting concept that was executed very well! The focaccia was deliciously grilled and the garlic/olive oil sauce was divine. I do prefer the texture of escargot, but the use of octopus was unique and good as well! For mains, we got the surf and turf and the macadamia-crusted mahi mahi. The mahi mahi was amazing!! Cooked really nice, lovely sauce. loved the toothsome bites of macadamia nut, the green beans were okay, but I realllly loved the rice. They used some sort of short grain rice that was a little crispy on top and had a delightful coconut aroma throughout. I can't stop thinking of this rice. My bf had the surf and turf, which he enjoyed. The turf part was 3 lobster ravioli in a lemon butter sauce, which were great! Really liked the ravioli. We were too stuffed for dessert, but we highly recommend Ulu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! They do not miss! We made the mistake of booking a reservation at 6:15 last night. This review is only about the ambiance not the food. They have plenty of umbrellas straight up to block the sun if it's right above you but none of the tilt to block the sun as it sets. The table next to us got up and left telling the server it was too hot to stay. Then we moved tables to another location and it was no better. We asked to be moved indoors and we were informed the A/C was broken. We paid for our drinks and appetizers and left also. Our server told us "please wait another 20 minutes and it will be better"but we were sweating too much to enjoy the evening. Ulu's was so nice we came here twice! Slightly upscale, this is a great resort restaurant. Try and sit outside or next to the windows if you can. You will be treated with great beach and sunset views. The staff is great and are prompt with drinks and food. One complaint is that they don't make a lava flow. Isn't that a requirement for a restaurant in Hawaii? I think I got the macadamia nut fresh fish both times. Other dishes we had were the scallops and also the filet. All were cooked perfectly. Sister restaurant to Monkeypod... big disappointment compared to Monkeypod. The food was good but had a lot of flaws. First, the kids breakfast was fine - our daughter ate all the eggs and bacon but did not care for the potatoes. The bacon was honestly really flavorful and cooked perfectly. The Mai Tai Pancakes were delicious- two fluffy pancakes with mai tai foam, syrup, and 3 paper thin slices of pineapple. For $24 it was not worth it. You'd expect a little more pineapple, at the very least. Paper thin slices were ridiculous. The Cure was good, but my husband thought the broth was too salty. I thought it was fine but we had ramen at Mensho recently and that was phenomenal so this pales in comparison. The service was nice and friendly but really slow to take our order and then it took 20 minutes to pay for our meal and with a 19 month toddler that is agony. Also since it took so long to get the check, our food sat at our table for a very long time and the birds swarmed. (An old man next to us called me bird lady but dude, it was not my fault.) Duncan our bartender helped us with the menu and we landed on the potstickers and coconut milk corn chowder. They were both tasty but could have been a bit warmer. This was a large tortilla folded in half- so not a generous portion. Rosemary fries which were above Average but could have been hotter, crisper, less browned, and more rosemary. Ketchup was not house made. The maitai was unique with an egg white foam with honey, and passionfruit with appropriate alcohol content. So, went for happy hour and it is a very, very limited menu which was a tad disappointing. We sat at the bar and it was empty, along with the restaurant and the patio outside. They don't offer kamaaina rates for locals which explains why. Not enough tourists, and too expensive for locals. Early November is a bad time on island and they aren't doing themselves any favours not catering to locals as well as tourists. I ordered a Mai Tai and it was the usual Merrimans fare with a nice foam and tangy. My friend ordered a vodka tonic and it was prepared as she asked. We had a long talk with the bar server as there was no one there and he was bored and it was nice to chat. I waited until 4pm to order from the dinner menu as I was intrigued by the mushroom pot pie. Nice to see something vegetarian on the menu that is a bit different. It was good, not delicious, but good. My friend ordered the potstickers from the happy hour menu and she said they were OK. Couldn't remember the contents, so described it as mystery meat....lol...nice sauce though. 2 cocktails and a mushroom pot pie came to just on $60 on happy hour pricing so I won't be visiting again.
