Ambiance: the restaurant is one of a few nestled in The Westin Kaanapali. I believe Ulu sits in the best location, overlooking the water. The restaurant is modern providing a fresh take in design to the island. 10/10 Food: no complaints here. We ordered the surf and surf which included lobster ravioli and filet mignon. We had 4 appetizers and 4 drinks: Green beans: sautéd with soy and something maybe dark sesame oil with generous macadamia nut topping, YUM. Coconut Shrimp: next level not a fried thing a fresh delicious large prawn bathed in a coconut sauce with some chopped jalepeno - wow! Wished there were more than 4'for $23; Quesadilla with veggies and Chermoula sauce just the right balance of acid and spice - a little hot for some maybe so go light at first. This was a large tortilla folded in half- so not a generous portion. Rosemary fries which were above Average but could have been hotter, crisper, less browned, and more rosemary. Ketchup was not house made. The maitai was unique with an egg white foam with honey, and passionfruit with appropriate alcohol content. Aloha, Ulu kitchen by Merriman's, located in the Westin in Kaanapali is a definite must when in Maui. Peter out did himself again by adding ulu to many dishes. The corn chowder with ulu (instead of potato) was the bomb! And the mushroom pie was splendidly rich with flavor. Great suggestions from our very attentive wait-help. Get there to enjoy the sunset from this beautiful oceanfront restaurant. If you're planning a party, they have a very nice, elegant room inside. Ulu's was so nice we came here twice! Slightly upscale, this is a great resort restaurant. Try and sit outside or next to the windows if you can. You will be treated with great beach and sunset views. The staff is great and are prompt with drinks and food. One complaint is that they don't make a lava flow. Isn't that a requirement for a restaurant in Hawaii? I think I got the macadamia nut fresh fish both times. Other dishes we had were the scallops and also the filet. All were cooked perfectly. Sister restaurant to Monkeypod... big disappointment compared to Monkeypod. The food was good but had a lot of flaws. First, the kids breakfast was fine - our daughter ate all the eggs and bacon but did not care for the potatoes. The bacon was honestly really flavorful and cooked perfectly. The Mai Tai Pancakes were delicious- two fluffy pancakes with mai tai foam, syrup, and 3 paper thin slices of pineapple. For $24 it was not worth it. You'd expect a little more pineapple, at the very least. Paper thin slices were ridiculous. The Cure was good, but my husband thought the broth was too salty. I thought it was fine but we had ramen at Mensho recently and that was phenomenal so this pales in comparison. The service was nice and friendly but really slow to take our order and then it took 20 minutes to pay for our meal and with a 19 month toddler that is agony. Also since it took so long to get the check, our food sat at our table for a very long time and the birds swarmed. (An old man next to us called me bird lady but dude, it was not my fault.) Honestly we weren't expecting much as this was a restaurant associated with our hotel. Typically hotel restaurants are not super exciting. We ended up eating here one day for breakfast and 2 days for dinner. Breakfast was fine but WOW dinner was fantastic. The Tako escargot will be something we dream of for years. The potstickers were good but the sauce was an acquired taste. I liked it. Ulu Kitchen is a great spot. Their Mai Tais are perfect, and their seafood is fresh. We went for dinner around 6pm and had two issues with our food, both of which were quickly resolved. Our waitress, Tauley, was a rockstar--I have never seen someone accommodate a table so well, while also juggling multiple other tables with their own issues. She kept a positive and professional attitude and was always on top of things. Bravo! The food that didn't have issues arrived perfect, and the replacements were just as good. All of the dishes were fresh, hot, and mouthwatering. The steak was cooked perfectly and packed with flavor, while the scallops were buttery and melted in my mouth. So, went for happy hour and it is a very, very limited menu which was a tad disappointing. We sat at the bar and it was empty, along with the restaurant and the patio outside. They don't offer kamaaina rates for locals which explains why. Not enough tourists, and too expensive for locals. Early November is a bad time on island and they aren't doing themselves any favours not catering to locals as well as tourists. I ordered a Mai Tai and it was the usual Merrimans fare with a nice foam and tangy. My friend ordered a vodka tonic and it was prepared as she asked. We had a long talk with the bar server as there was no one there and he was bored and it was nice to chat. I waited until 4pm to order from the dinner menu as I was intrigued by the mushroom pot pie. Nice to see something vegetarian on the menu that is a bit different. It was good, not delicious, but good. My friend ordered the potstickers from the happy hour menu and she said they were OK. Couldn't remember the contents, so described it as mystery meat....lol...nice sauce though. 2 cocktails and a mushroom pot pie came to just on $60 on happy hour pricing so I won't be visiting again. Especially as I can get Kamaaina rates at the other restaurants in the same shopping complex. Especially Leilani's next door which was packed. with a line waiting to get in, compared to empty Ulu. The sauce with the dumplings was very sour and spicy (I love spicy) but the rest of my family couldn't eat it. Duncan our bartender helped us with the menu and we landed on the potstickers and coconut milk corn chowder. They were both tasty but could have been a bit warmer. Duncan quickly advised the chef and appreciated the feedback as they are starting dinner this week as mentioned. We had a great time and will be back later this week to try some more. The lilikoi foam, which they are famous for, is amazing and smart to add to their pancake dish--sooo good! It would be nice to have the option to add toppings, like macadamia nuts. They tend to get pretty busy, and the servers seem a bit overwhelmed, but our server did a great job! The location is fantastic, with an ocean view. I don't have a picture of it, but their lunch menu features a smash burger that is absolutely delicious! You can tell they make their own patties, buns, and fries in-house. We had high hopes for our last night in Maui, especially since we'd enjoyed breakfast at ʻUlu Kitchen the previous four mornings. The setting is undeniably stunning--right on the ocean with breathtaking views--but sadly, the dinner experience didn't live up to the location or the Merriman name. Service started off on the wrong foot. It took quite a while for anyone to greet us after we were seated, and though our server seemed overwhelmed, there were two or three others nearby who didn't appear nearly as busy. Another staff member eventually stepped in to take our drink order, which was appreciated. When our actual server finally arrived, he jumped straight into asking if we were ready to order--no welcome, no mention of specials (which I knew existed, so I had to ask). We started with the coconut shrimp appetizer, which was a major letdown. If you're expecting the classic Hawaiian-style coconut shrimp, this isn't it. It was four prawns lightly dusted with coconut--more of a garnish than a crust. Had we known that, we would've ordered something else. For entrées, I had the macadamia nut-crusted fish (mongchong), which was lukewarm at best when it arrived. The "crust" was really just some chopped macadamias sprinkled on top--definitely not what the menu described. It came with rice and a side of green beans, which turned out to be the spicy Szechuan beans from their appetizer menu. That wasn't indicated anywhere, and I wouldn't have chosen them if I'd known. Maybe if the dish had been hot, it would've fared better, but at $48, it was a major disappointment. My son ordered the special: seared ahi tuna with mashed potatoes and an Asian salad. It sounded great, but the sauce was overwhelmingly salty--essentially straight soy sauce--and made the dish nearly inedible. Another $60+ down the drain. In the end, we left feeling incredibly let down. We'd saved this meal for our last night in Maui and were hoping for something memorable. Unfortunately, it was--just not in the way we wanted. We came for my husband's Birthday dinner and unfortunately we felt the food was pretty underwhelming. Not great when the caesar salad was the best part of the meal. We started it the octopus escargot. I would definitely recommended as this is a unique and flavorful starter. Just know the octopus is on the tougher/chewier side. It helps that it is cut into very small pieces. For entrees I got the mushroom pot pie and my husband got the surf & turf. The pot pie came out extremely hot and I could tell it just came out of the oven. Unfortunately my husbands food came out cold - wish they timed both these dishes better because his had to have been sitting there waiting for mine to finish. We didn't send it back as we were with our toddler and didn't have time to wait for a new meal. My husband was disappointed with the quality of the steak- it was cold, undercooked, and didn't have a nice crispy sear on the outside. The mushroom pot pie was okay- it's really just crust filled with tons and tons of mushrooms. I really like mushrooms but could only eat half as it was so mushroom heavy. I told the host it was my husband's Birthday and asked if they could put a candle in dessert. She assured me they would do this. No mention of a birthday from our server and no candle. 7/1/24 My husband and I took our family here for dinner. We had a reservation and were seated within 15 minutes of checking in. Justin was our server and he did a great job catering to our needs. We shared a Caesar salad and the daily sashimi selection, which was yellowfin tuna. My husband is vegan and was pleasantly surprised when Justin shared one of the off the menu specials for appetizers was a cucumber and papaya salad that he thoroughly enjoyed. The sauce for his cucumber salad was actually great for dipping my tuna sashimi into. Everyone at our table (expect my husband) enjoyed the lobster ravioli. The portions were perfect. The ravioli was not overly sauced and you could taste the sweetness of the lobster inside the filling. However the biggest hit had to be the coconut corn chowder that my husband ordered. It was so flavorful and rich. We enjoyed it so much we ordered more to take home for our granddaughter to enjoy. At the end of our meal Justin brought out an order of an off the menu chocolate cake with a candle to celebrate our daughter's birthday. The cake was slightly dry and the table didn't really care for the crème fraiche topping. However, the raspberry sauce made up for the dryness of the cake. It's very spicy but we liked the heat. For our mains we ordered the lobster ravioli and the chefs fish special. We both enjoyed our meals but wished there was a thicker more luxurious sauce on both.
