Came here for lunch with a large group and had a fabulous meal where we were able to order a ton of different things. The food is excellent, and there's a lot of variety, but service is a bit lacking. Everyone was nice and polite, but we just kept having to ask for things, whereas these things were automatically provided at Chili (a similarly expensive, upscale Chinese restaurant). In terms of food, the pork trotters, pumpkin puffs, beef scallion pancakes, Chinese broccoli were my favorite - truly very well done and/or quite unique (the puffs and trotters). The duck was solid as well. The soup dumplings were quite good, but just relative to the other amazing food, they were much less memorable and I wouldn't get them again. The mini pan fried buns were fine. Lastly, got the birds nest for dessert, and that was excellent as well. When all your mainland friends recommend Uluh as their favorite Chinese spot, you gotta go. Uluh is a gem tucked away in the East village. The restaurant gets crowded so be sure to use the Yelp waitlist feature when you can. The place is beautiful, with a huge dining table in the middle. Staff were kind and attentive and were able to recommend dishes when we were unsure. Food was delicious. We had the crab tofu, pig trotters, eggplant Al and the fried chicken. The winner was definitely between the crab tofu and the pig but honestly they were all delicious. We came at a busy hour and although there was a wait, we were greeted and seated immediately as a party of 2. We also had our order taken right away because we were in a rush which I found to be impossible on a Saturday night during a busy dinner hour but they did it for us. The food came out in a timely manner and my favorite was the Peking Duck because the small size was perfect for 2 people. Not your typical seating because it was a huge table with other couples as well but I think everyone was spaced nicely and no one was too close together. The most amazing thing about this place is perhaps they are able to make so many very different styles of Chinese food -- Sichuan, Dim Sum, and even Peking Duck -- while making them all at very high quality. Honestly thought the Peking Duck was just ok, but the fact that they serve it, despite not being a specialized place for it (unlike Hutong), I am pretty impressed. There are lots of cool platings here, like the red spike fried ball on a tree (kinda dangerous if you ask me), and the completely flat plated tofu with crab egg. Can't say anything was particularly a standout here, but I thought the overall restaurant is very good. They also have pretty fancy tea service if you're into that. read more

I loved everything about Uluh from the decor down to the food. It's walk-in only but we were able to come in with no wait on a Saturday. The service was really quick and our waitress recommended the beef and rice pasta dish which came in a hot stone bowl and was the perfect amount of spice. I especially loved the Peking duck -- the duck was tender and the skin was crispy. Someone at the table next to us had the pumpkin puffs and they were so cute I couldn't resist ordering them. The outside was similar to a sesame ball at dim sum and the inside had a sweet and salty filling. I'd definitely come back here for the amazing assortment of food and the quick service. I've been wanting to try Uluh for awhile and I'm so glad I finally made my way to try it. All the dishes we ordered were amazing and the perfect amount of food for a group of 3. In terms of service, it was ok, wasn't the best in terms of hospitality, we felt like the servers weren't the friendliest not just to our group but other parties dining in as well. This is the only restaurant I revisited out of my busy binge-eating schedule trying to make a dent in my 100+ NYC bookmarks in the last few weeks. Uluh is currently my favorite (semi-elevated) Chinese restaurant in New York. That said, the menu is massive and the english menu descriptions can be off. There are definitely hits and misses if you just order like shooting darts in the dark. Below is a list of items I recommend after trying ~80% of the menu (so you won't have to). High recs: - Crab tofu, best version I've had in North America, must get - Salty egg yolk pumpkin pudding, another must get if you're obsessed with anything salted egg yolk like I am - Stir fried cabbage with soy sauce - Black sesame soup dumplings - Pumpkin puffs, basically a salted eggyolk lava bun from dimsum restaurants but with fried mochi exterior, delicious if you aren't sick of salted eggyolk yet. TLDR: Run dont walk for great sichuan cuisine at uluh! Expect to wait around 30-45 minutes for a table on a busier evening, however it is absolutely worth the wait. I got the peach drink with cheese foam that was so delicious and refreshing. Every dish was so flavorful and unique, we tried to rank them amongst each other and it was nearly impossible. Definitely order the eggplant and string beans, it was cooked and seasoned to perfection. The Dan dan noodles were chewy and doused in the perfect amount of chili oil. The sichuan fish was daunting at first but was so smooth and bursting with peppercorn and umami flavor. First off, the spacing between tables is awful. It's sooo cramped and half your body is going to be touching the next table, especially as you try to exit after the meal. I'm more intimate with the strangers dining on both sides of me than with my partner sitting in front of me! Came upon opening, and while the space is pretty big, they sat us table after table in the first section while the bigger dining hall was completely empty. Wish they would've sat people more spread apart as it wasn't even crowded when we first came in, and when we left later. Mini Pumpkin Puff: our favorite of the meal! They look more like tangerines to me hehe. But so cute! They're filled with super hot, oozing salted egg yolk that was sooo good. The outside is crazy crispy so it's a little hard to bite into the center, but once you're there, it's like a flavorful flood going into your mouth. Yummm. There should definitely be more than just two per order -.- Dandan Noodles: another highlight! The meat sauce was spicy and flavorful (though lacking much meat, as usual) and the noodles were very good. Super small portion so not good for sharing Black Truffle Soup Dumplings: barely a hint of truffle, does have some juice, but pretty average. Some of the soup dumplings had already popped when served. If you want truffle soup dumplings, these ain't it Pan Fried Mini Pork Baos: not a lot of places have this so we were pretty excited to try. It's definitely super mini! I knew the skin to meat ratio would be off, but I wasn't going to care that much. The filling is pretty average, the skin is definitely thick, and while there was a little juice inside the buns, unfortunately all the buns stuck to the plate and ripped. I'll explain: 1. No reservations. I get it when it's a fast-pace dining place, but that's not the case here. Quoted wait times by the hostess are completely off and the number of people waiting in the small entry area isn't regulated. The result is quite chaotic. 2. We received very little guidance/helpful recs from the waiters despite seeking the same. Dishes weren't named when placed on the table. Combined, since we're not too familiar with this cuisine, it left us doing a lot of guessing. 3. Spicy levels weren't fairly presented. A 'mild' degree of spice was almost unbearable, and we have a high spice tolerance. The main exception to the dish quality were the desserts. A hidden gem tucked in the East Village. Note if you are meeting friends, they will not seat you until everyone is present. The service is accommodating and gracious. Our server did not up sell nor did he let our hungry eyes run away with our curiosity. The interior space is intimate and filled with happy guests. We ordered the Shanghai dumplings that were freshly made and steaming hot. Though I have had plumper and larger dumplings-- they hit the spot. Our braised greens were flecked with garlic and perfectly sautéed. The Peking duck was boneless with crisp not flabby duck skin. Roll the duck up with crunchy cucumbers and julienned scallions and hoisin sauce. The pancakes look like mu shu pork wrappers but they stayed flexible and got the job done. A bit of creative license. We ordered the General Tso's chicken with bowls of jasmine rice to round out the meal. Most impressive was the choice of teas. I rarely find organic Chrysanthemum tea or Chrysanthemum blossoms. The server was fast to refill the glass tea carafe. Servings are individual but refills are complimentary. We needed the hot tea to combat the chilly evening. Not only are they aesthetic and cute, but also they are super duper yummy! My friend for the peach oolong tea with cheese foam and I got the soy milk with ice jelly and mochi. Both are amazing and I recommend either one! PUMPKIN PUFF - We had go get this for the aesthetics and it ended up being really yummy! The outside is kind of the like texture of a sesame ball dessert: crispy yet chewy. The inside has a warm oozing sweet yolky goodness. You have to try! DIM SUM PLATTER - We love the presentation for this one but we would skip it. I think we're just so use to the taste of basic cheap dim sum that this dish didn't wow us. CRAB TOFU - Pairs perfectly with some white rice! It's spicy but the white rice balance out the spicy a bit. We were a party of 2 so we weren't able to order some of the other dishes because those where meant for bigger parties. If you're coming as a group, make sure you reserve! It looked like there was a long wait for groups of 3+ trying to do a walk-in for dinner. Luckily I only came with one other friend. Would definitely order the crab tofu. It doesn't look or sound like it'll be that satisfying, especially if you prefer meat dishes, but the sauce carries a surprising amount of richness and crab flavor. I would get this with rice. Brown sugar peking duck is tasty as well and they serve it with crepes (which is my favorite way to have peking duck). Be prepared to splurge on these if you're hungry because they're one of the pricier items on the menu. Uluh is another one of the relatively new restaurants in the east village (about 4 years since opening) we always like to try whenever we visit NY. Came here on a weekday evening when it's not too busy - no reservations although you can call and get on the waitlist if necessary (all parties must be present to be seated). The interior of the place is narrow in the front with one row of tables opposite the bar but much wider in the back with tables along both walls plus a large 10-12 person rectangular table in the middle (where they'll seat unrelated smaller groups together when the place gets full). Lighting is very dim with dark walls and furnishings. Noise level is extremely high - good place to come if you like the kind of atmosphere where you can't easily hear what your dining companions are saying. As for the food, some are very good (the soup dumplings are excellent with tons of juice), some are ok (okra salad, very refreshing), some could be less greasy (string beans), but some you should avoid ordering - the chili chicken is absolutely the worst. For one thing, there's no chicken, the dish should be more accurately named "Chili with a few pieces of greasy fried chicken fat". We mentioned this to the staff and their answer was - "many customers complain about this dish but we can't do anything about it". Well at least you can't say they are not honest about how they deal with customer feedback! read more

I came with a group of 4 and we left feeling full yet satisfied. 1) Fish in Homemade Pickled Cabbage ($29): Tasted extremely authentic, maybe a little too sour for my liking 2) Brown Sugar Glazed Peking Duck ($44): A must-try in my opinion. During the next trip, by random chance, we were visiting La Cabra and we saw many well dressed Asians streaming in the restaurant next door. I was thinking the little one who was hungry for some soup dumplings so I checked out the menu, seeing that they had soup dumplings and on closer look, I saw the restaurant was Uluh!! What a coincidence. We went inside it was very trendy and cool restaurant. We waited for 10 minutes and got a table, the restaurant was packed, 99.5% Asians, you know it is a good place! The soup dumplings were well executed. The truffle soup dumpling had a nice truffle flavor! The most oustanding dish I had was the ladyfingers with xo sauce and ground pork. I have heard that the wait can be longer on the weekends. My friends and I got the crab tofu, the brown sugar glazed peking duck, fatty beef in sour soup and also the vegetarian dry pot. They were all soo good!! The portions were huge for 4 people and definitely brought home leftovers to eat the next day. Although pricey, I think this is one of the top Szechuan places in NYC for me. They are great portions, the flavors are there, and they don't skimp out on the meats/seafood. They also have great cocktails, all very creative and unique, although I don't think they're generous with their liquor pour. For the two of us to share, we had the salted egg roast pork, the SH pork soup dumplings, and the crab tofu. Roast pork was not bad, but slightly underwhelming since it did feel like the egg yolks and the pork were very disjointedly thrown together and served. XLB was also fine, but to be honest expectedly so - I think it's rather standard fare for this type of restaurant. Crab tofu was definitely the highlight - tofu was super tender, crab/sauce was really flavourful and rich, and overall just a perfect flavour profile to pair nicely with some rice. Portion size was decent and price point also unsurprising, so overall a quite enjoyable experience.
