A friend told me about this place and because Iived in Hokkaido for a few years, I was excited to try a new Yakiniku place. AND then I found out they also have Jingus Kan (yes, named after Genghis Khan)! This was my favorite dish while living in Japan and a dish I haven't seen served in a Japanese restaurant for the last 25 years. I couldn't believe it. I was so excited. The food is great, and quite nostalgic. It's definitely worth coming to try out. This is an all you can eat yakiniku restaurant, so come prepared. It costs $25/person plus drinks and desert. This a buffet style cook your own meats at your table, Japanese-Korean inspired restaurant. The decoration was on point. The place is elegant, and service is efficient and friendly. It feels a little cozy in there as they maximized space, but is was alright. I did not love the food and for the amount of money I paid, I should have loved it. The meats were perfectly adequate and the quality was as advertised but those that were marinated Korean style were just not quite right. Good but no delicious. The precooked food was also mediocre approximating bad. The seaweed salad was ok; the pickled cucumbers were too soggy and not good; the potstickers stuck too long to the pot and burned; and the sea food dumplings were too fishy (no, seafood should not taste fishy). The kimchee was good. I wouldn't recommend going in large groups. We were 5 and there was a lot of waiting for the grill, and one of the people in our group could hardly reach the grill. There are few times in life that I would be willing to drop $25+ on a meal for just myself. This experience is definitely one of those times (notice I called it an experience). Upon arrival, you are greeted by kind hosts who either seat you or ask you to wait for a table - and the wait is never very long. Once you are seated, your server will ask if it's your first time there and if it is, will explain the entire process to you very clearly. This place is a Japanese grill where you get to cook your own meats, choose from different dipping sauces, and of course they'll bring you some rice to supplement your meal. By the time you get your food to your table you probably won't remember which meats you chose, but they're all good so don't worry about it (but maybe stay away from the raw chicken cause that's a little scary). Since finding out about this place I've already been twice and neither time was I disappointed at all! Obviously you can't drop $25+ on a meal every week but I would definitely recommend this place for special occasions. The experience of being able to cook your own food at your table is brilliant and so fun! My husband & I love this place, and everyone we've ever brought with us has loved it too. Sometimes there can be a wait, but it's definitely worth it. I only wish they had bigger grills and more of a variety when it comes to their sushi (they only serve California rolls). The shrimp, beef, soups, salad, etc. are very good. Good all-you-can-eat yakiniku option in Utah County! You can pick and choose different portions of meat which I really like! Typically you have to order plates of meat with a server but I like that you can control meat portions and grab food as often as you want. They have a pretty large selection of meat and vegetables to choose from. They also have fruit and salads to balance out the meat. They have three different sauces at each table that you can dip the meat in. I only really liked one of them and wished they had better sauce options for the meat. First of all, this entire development here in Vineyard is interesting. It's anchored by the giant movie theatre, but the whole development is really out there. Yes, there are some homes going on out here, and they will eventually fill in, but it was like a massive shining beacon after exiting the freeway. I was excited to make the trek, as I was meeting up with someone in Utah County and she is a good sport when it comes to new places and adventurous eating. We found the spot, parked (parking is not ideal for the restaurant on a busy Friday night) and went in to be seated. We got out names on the list about 7pm, and ended up being seated around 7:20pm. Not too bad. The server explained the system--there are two buffets, one with raw foods and one with prepped foods. Use the long black plates for raw, the square whites for prepped. We grabbed a plate of raw with the intention to have it cook while we went back for prepped foods, but they forgot to light our grill so we needed time to get it warmed up. After getting back from prepped food pileup, we plopped the food on. For meats, they have a lot of options. Steaks, pork, sausage, chicken, shrimp, lamb; they're all thinly slice and vary in preparation. As I understand it, KBBQ focuses more on marinades, while Japanese is more about the meat and the sauces. So don't expect a ton of flavor on stuff (besides the Korean chicken pork, etc. that's labeled as spicy) and do use the sauces that have on each table. The prepped stuff was not bad, with a dumpling, a gyoza, some soups, salads, California roll, fruits, and other odds and ends. Our stuff grilled up really quickly, but you should plan to spend a lot of time here. We stayed until after they had officially closed, but that was only in part because of the stop and start food protocol, and mostly because it's a great place to go with someone who is a brilliant conversationalist as you get to catch up, listen, and tell embarrassing stories together. As others have said it's a fun date night. Our service was friendly; once you're off and running, it's just them keeping up with your water/drinks/whatever, and they do sell some desserts. We enjoy Umami very much and go there often. However, our recent experience left a bad impression in their customer service department. We had our server who took care of us the whole time and was very courteous and nice. But our bill was brought to us by a different server that had not served us once our entire dinner. As he brought our bill, he proceeds to complement our daughter how beautiful she is and asks if he could get her IG. Never once did he introduce himself or excuses himself as our family is having dinner, a sign of disrespect to us parents and family. My daughter is a bit shocked and is lost for words. My wife then says to this server that he may want to ask her dad first, to which I turn and tell him that our daughter is only sixteen. He was probably around 20-21 years old since he mentioned that he served an LDS church mission. He retracted himself and apologizes and leaves our table. This establishment should retrain their workers on respect and manners because we let him off very easy. I don't care what generation or background you have. Come correct or be corrected. The unique dining experience alone makes it worth a visit, but the food is also fantastic! The concept: all you can eat assorted and flavorful raw meats, that you take to your table and grill on your own personal grill in your table. I also love that they offer the fixings for making lettuce wraps out of your grilled meats too. This is not a quick in-and-out restaurant, it takes time to grill the meats. At first flush, Umami Japanese barbecue seems like the real deal. A buffet arrangement of a wide variety of meats. Most of the meats appear to be of good quality . But I found the buffet to be very light on the vegetable side as far as items you could Grill to add to your meal. They also have a decent variety of side dishes. But there were several downsides. First and foremost was the overall grill temperature was very low. It should not take 10 minutes to grill onion to a translucent state. Or take almost 5 minutes to properly grill a slice of pork belly. My server assured me that the temperature was at the maximum setting. This has not been my experience in other Yakiniku restaurants around the country. It almost seems like they don't trust their customers not to start a fire. The other downside I found curious, was the level of sweetness in the various side dishes? Sunomono? Sweet. Kimchi? Sweet! I have never really had sweet kimchi and I make my own at home. The last thing I want with raw fish is for it to be warm, could not eat it. My favorite meat choice is the bone in ribs but every piece we got was all fat. It's hard to argue against 4 1/2 stars and over 50 reviews -- until I see the details. A lot of people love things I don't care about. They love things I really dislike too. On a bit of a whim, the wife and I wanted something different than the regular haunts. We were willing to skip any adult drinks, since they don't exist at most places like this when in Utah County. That helped drop our expectations. We arrived midweek on a good evening. It was 3/4 full. Perfect. Enough people to keep the food cycling, but not overly crowded. It seemed we had to wait a lot longer than required to be put at a table that had been empty all along. Since they don't cook anything to order, or really need to be around your table once you get going, I didn't get it. It's pretty much a guarantee that anyplace doing "all you can eat" at this price point is going to be mediocre ingredients. They didn't disappoint. A lot of pretty mediocre stuff. Plus, you get to cook it for yourself on a flame that is so low, you get almost no benefit from the flame. The meat acts as a mostly flavorless base for the sweet/salty sauces. There were pre-marinated things, but they didn't wow me. In the end, we had an acceptable meal. However, there are similar places I find more interesting. They are not all you can eat for a fast casual price. Better ingredients do make for a better meal, and I'm obviously so far from the target audience, most of you can ignore my review. In the end actual Japanese food is all about pristine ingredients, subtle flavors, and great technique. The food here is incredible. So far, this has been my favorite Asian BBQ place in Utah. They have a great selection of meat, and they have a variety of delicious sauces to dip your food in. Customer service was great. This place is a little pricier, but it is an all-you-can-eat place, so I recommend arriving hungry. They have some additional side dishes you can get like California rolls, salad, fruit, etc...but I think the meat really is the star of the show. It's not very spacious, so tables are fairly close together for American standards. I will mention that it is not uncommon for their to be a long wait, so I would plan accordingly.
