After driving by this place several days a week for almost 2 years, we finally gave them a try tonight. My only regret is not having been here earlier! We placed a carryout order which included teriyaki chicken for our son and various rolls for wifey and me. Included were 2 salads & 2 bowls of miso soup. For under $40 bucks, we got tons of food. Everything was presented and packaged well and tasted great. I'm not usually a huge fan of teriyaki anything but I tasted some of my son's order and found it to be rather good. It wasn't just annoyingly sweet but had a little charred taste that really rounded out the flavor. As for the nigiri and rolls, they all were very tasty, and the fish tasted very fresh. We didn't order anything super exotic but I'm definitely up for venturing into their more non-standard selections now that we know the quality of what we got. The "Sushi Regular" I ordered came with 8 pieces of nigiri sushi and a tuna roll. They also provided plenty of wasabi and gari (ginger). It was plenty for $16 (incl. the soup + green salad). The kiwi roll my wife ordered was tasty, as was the spicy tuna roll. They also packaged in plenty of soy sauce in small containers, for individual dipping, along with the necessary chopsticks & soup spoons. This is not authentic japanese sushi by any means but decent if you're looking for some rolls and fresh fish. I've ordered delivery a couple times and they always give a sweet potato tempura roll on the house. I always get a salmon avocado roll but their Spicy Girl Roll (Crunch spicy tuna and spicy yellow tail, wasabi aioli, covered with crunch spicy salmon) and New Mango roll (Salmon avocado inside, topped with spicy tuna, mango with wasabi aioli) are my favorites. read more

Really great sushi! 4.5 stars from start to finish. I made a reservation here for apparently what was a very busy Saturday night. Even though it was only 6:20pm, it was packed. My reservation was for 6pm but travel time made my party of ten a tad late. I called ahead and already informed them that we would be and they were very understanding (we appreciated that especially after arriving to find out this was a really small, local favorite sushi spot). Not meant for big groups at all but lucky us, they took my reservation and never once told me it was an issue. Everyone here were fully hands on and friendly. We were serviced by all, from wait staff to bus boy and even the managers. Again, the place was maxed to capacity and lines out the door by the time we left (just before 8pm). They never rushed us and were good about clearing out the plates and refilling our drinks. We were pleasantly surprised too as throughout our meal, we were given a few complimentary tasting plates (the mango sweet potato roll, fried Rock Shrimp, extra soups and salads); the kids even scored some Ramune (bottled Japanese Soda). We ordered only a few hot dishes, the rest was all sushi and sashimi goodness. Must try: the Showboat special, great for sharing as you get a tasting of all the classic sushi/sashimi pieces, a California roll, a tuna roll, and some eel sushi. Very good value and sushi was fresh! The sashimi entree was also a great value. We also ordered the Sake (salmon) Don twice because we couldn't get enough of it, too many salmon lovers at this sitting. LOL Suggestions: special rolls - honey roll and the oyster roll was good. The Gyoza was pan fried beautifully. Rock Shrimp was quite sweet (too much for our palate). The mango sweet potato roll was flavorful but it would not be my first choice for vegetarian option. Skip the soft shell crab, it had an after taste, not impressed and it was small. Skip the shumai as well. Nothing memorable. To be honest, I'm very surprised at all the positive reviews. When I opened my take-out lunch box from this restaurant, I thought it was a joke. Their california roll pieces (not as a side, but as a main california roll order) were literally the size of CHERRIES. I could fit them all in one hand. I didn't know whether to laugh and eat them, or return them and get my money back. However, this place isn't even worth the time it takes to return their funny orders which they call "food". ADIOS! P.S. On another occasion, their shrimp smelled funny, wasn't fresh to say the least, and it was so soaked in edibly OLD GREASE that I could not eat the food. Yuck. One time i dropped a straw on the floor and went to pick it up and before I sat up one of the waiters was there handing me a new one. Great variety of rolls and menu items. We came here around three on a Friday and it wasn't too busy. Got our food pretty much right away and then stuffed ourselves. Today we tried rock shrimp and the gyoza soup for the first time. Umi didn't disappoint in the price and selection department either. I opt for the beef teriyaki dinner, which came with salad, miso soup and rice. The beef came out on a sizzling plate with beef on top of cabbage and onions. Flavor was great and beef was tender. Portions were generous and the staff even gave us a free sushi roll with our dinner. My co-workers each ordered the Chirashi, and mentioned that the fish was very fresh and portions were generous. Been here a few times and I'm yet to decide if I like their signature sauce or not... it's like a subtle honey like sauce that they put on everything. Salad dressing? Honey sauce, teriyaki... honey sauce. Maybe my senses can only handle honey on 1 thing at a time. If I'm too order teriyaki and sushi, they'll both have this honey sauce on it. Dilemma dilemma... So I ordered the dragon show which is cooked eel on California rolls, cucumber rolls and sushi hand made pieces. They were drizzled with this honey sauce which gave it a unique flavor but not over powering. I think the eel like this is very good. The honey on barely there salad was not good. The trio roll was hefty, stacked with salmon, tuna and yellow tail, crunchy and spicy. It's like a meal by itself and thank goodness no honey sauce. This one had the mayo sauce from other typical sushi cuisine. The server got tea and gives you sweet potato rolls (without the honey sauce) on the house once you've ordered. Which is very nice to receive. I don't think the price is ridiculous, actually it's better than most sushi place for the quality. I would recommend but be warned about that honey sauce. read more

Umi has been my go to neighborhood sushi place for years. They were good a few years ago, but now they have gotten even better. So good that I feel ashamed for writing this review so late. The sushi is always fresh. My favorite is their Uni and Ikura sushi, and it always hits the spot EVERYTIME. The prices are good and portions are generous. Tony personally tries the fish. If it's not good, he'll rather not make money, send the fish back and tell customers that item is unavailable. This type of dedication to quality control is rare for a neighborhood restaurant. The customer service is excellent, whether it's take out/delivery or to dine in. Delivery is fast. Dining in, I'm always greeted warmly. My tea is always full, plates are cleared promptly, and food is served in a timely fashion. From my experience they always give some thing complimentary, such as free roll, edamame, or shumai to show their appreciation. In my opinion they absolutely do not have to do that. The excellent service they provide is good enough to get my 5 stars, but I still love getting free stuff . They always have a 20% off sushi. They are always packed during dinner service no matter which day of the week, and rightfully so. Only thing they could make the dining experience a whole lot richer is to serve alcohol. read more

Medium sized restaurant right near the busy intersections of Union Tpke and Utopia Pkwy, definitely convenient for any St John's students (I think you get a 10% off discount with SJU ID as well). Super busy on a Sunday night surprisingly. Service was attentive even when it was super busy. Tempura appetizer was super crispy, just the way I like it. What a lovely find! My friends wanted to go out for sushi and discovered this place in Queens. It's not in an area I would usually go to but this place was a great find. It has a bit of a Korean feel, small but big enough to be kid friendly, and the service and vibe is spectacular. Our waiter, Be, was welcoming from the beginning and gave A+ service. He gave my daughter who is only 1 got a bowl of miso soup with a couple of ice cubes so that it wasn't too hot. How thoughtful! She had her own plate as well. We ordered the Showboat which was around $65 and had what you normally would expect - a lot of sashimi, California roll, some sushi, wasabi, and ginger. I think the price was pretty standard as well as the quality of the meats. What stood out for me was indeed the service. The waiters aren't on top of you but they are always aware if you need a plate removed, replaced, or a tea refill. At first, he complimented us with a shrimp appetizer. Then in the middle of our meal, he brought a sweet potato and mango roll complimentary. Then when we were paying our bill, he came over and said he would like to give us ice cream on the house - vanilla, red bean, or green tea. WHAT?!? Not only is the restaurant generous, but they are seriously one of the most customer-oriented places in New York City and every customer gets treated like royalty. I've been coming to Umi Sushi for yearsss and it's always been a hit. From their food to their pricing, literally everything is perfect. It's a small restaurant located on Union turnpike, but in an area with parking, and typically not too busy. Don't get me wrong though, I've seen orders lined up for pick-up, even throughout the pandemic. I ordered the shrimp shumai and some typical rolls - spicy tuna roll and shrimp tempura. I also ordered one special roll - Spicy two in one. Each roll was freshly prepared and filling. The staff is very attentive and gave us a sweet potato roll on the house as well! So sweet of them. I highly recommend this hole in the wall! I love this place. The sushi has a very subtle hint of Korean twist, sesame oil, that gives it a bit more umami. I've been coming here for 7-8 years and they provide consistency in their food. My friend and I wanted to go big, so we ordered the sushi for 2 which comes in a sushi boat! We were ecstatic to try this place out. I've been excited to get off work for a week now, do nails, then have sushi. We ordered and got our salad. The dressing was weird. Most sushi places have ginger dressing with nice acidity. This place's dressing was shinier than the nails I just had done and was just oily and salty. The salad has one slice of cucumber and one flower shaped carrot. I would have liked more cucumbers. Our boat meal also came with miso soup which was pretty good. Upon getting the sushi, one waiter didn't speak clearly even after asked him twice what the free roll was. (We later on found out that it was mango and sweet potato roll - 4 pcs) We didn't drink much water. Besides the chopstick papers being taken, the plate for salads and bowls for soup were there the entire duration of the meal which I wasn't extremely happy about since the boat also took up a lot of space. I get that this isn't a huge restaurant so there isn't going to be a 4 person table for 2 customers, but eh. Moving on, we got a boat with 4 types of sushi and upgraded the California roll to a spicy salmon roll. Waaaaaay too mushy. She was really nice, but it was just a bit strange to me that the waitress wouldn't know how much of an up charge it'd be...because many customers around us also swapped the combo's rolls. The boat's main pieces were 8 pieces of spicy tuna rolls, 8 pieces of spicy salmon rolls (originally California rolls, but we both don't enjoy it), 4 pieces of salmon rolls, 4 pieces of tuna rolls, 4 pieces of yellowtail, and 4 pieces of white tuna? topped with really aromatic scallion pieces. I really enjoyed these. It was really filling. The core of this meal was really nice, but because this place's reviews were overhyped, I was disappointed. The sweet potato mango roll wasn't my favorite. Let's just say I wouldn't order it myself. I appreciate the free food though. I really wanted to love this place so that I could tell the hospital that i'm working at nearby about it so that we could all order lunch. Before Umi Sushi, the thought of good sushi in Fresh Meadows had literally never entered my mind. Couple the fact this place is not Japanese (#1), but Korean owned and operated initially gave me pause. (#2) However, after several visits I am a fan like everyone else. Umi is one of the best spots to enjoy the raw-some experience of sushi in eastern Queens. Make no mistake, upon first glance a lot of the sushi here looks as average as any other sushi spot, but their consistency in keeping the platters flowing is rather impressive. Sushi snobs best taper their expectations, this is no high end omakase joint complete with Japanese liquors and tea pairings. Instead, this is a casual but quality spot to satiate that sushi fix. The way I enjoy eating here is by trying a lot (#3). Variety is the spice of life and many nigiri / sashimi / roll orders are the way to go, especially in a group. They do a very good job with the presentation and the combinations (such as the show boat!) are affordable and feature a good bit of what they do. For more standard meals and less people, the Izumi Sushi ($18) is a good choice and features a pre-set of salmon / tuna / yellow tail sushi + roll. For the roughly the same price, the Chirashi bowl ($17) is a good way to enjoy a nice bowl of raw fish variety over sushi rice. I can't say I'm in love with their hot food, but generally speaking I alway stick to sushi here. In terms of the rolls, I highly recommend the Honey River ($11), which has a nice smattering of shrimp tempura, caviar, cucumber, avocado, smoked eel, and sesame seeds. The Gentleman Roll ($13) has tuna, salmon, yellowtail, avocado, with some soy and spicy sauce. Go big with the Angel Roll ($15) which is like a sushi burrito made of eel, smoked salmon, shrimp on top of an avocado tempura, cucumber, and masago. Sushi gluttony has no bounds. It's always worth experimenting and very key to ask the staff on what is fresh during that visit. It might not be fish caught that day of course, but reasonably fresh to serve. When dining at the restaurant, all sushi rolls have 20% and that's a great deal. Each roll is also 8 pieces, unlike other restaurant that are only 6 pieces per roll.
