Favorite Thai food in the city. Very small room, best for takeout rather than waiting on a table. The chicken wings are a MUST!

Squeezed into this tiny space for a get-together with friends. They did accept a reservation, but get really anxious if your party does arrive on time and they clearly have people waiting to dine-in. It's a really small space so every customer is precious. TIP: Don't be late! And expect to be asked if it'll be okay if they take away seats if not enough of your party shows up on time. Roti with curry sauces ($4.99) -It's a Thai restaurant offering a Malaysian/Singaporean staple. That's ominous to begin with but I'm a sucker for roti so of course I had to order it. -The roti looks like it got fried into a crunchy crisp here and cut too large (plus it's now too stiff) to properly fit into the little cup of coconut flavoured curry. -You're ordering roti in a Thai restaurant, so be prepared for something different. If you need your roti to be close to the Malaysian or Singaporean style, go somewhere else for it. -Also price per portion is atrocious. Watch those 99 cents and just round up to the nearest dollar. Fried Chicken Wings ($8.99) -Price feels atrocious. It's more than a dollar a wing. -If you can somehow overlook the price though, the seasoning and crispiness make this a winner. Even when it's cooled down to room temperature later, there was good crunch to it. -Sweet-savory seasoning makes it tasty, plus it was still juicy inside. Try a bite before you dip it in the unnecessary sauce. Pad Thai Tofu with shrimp ($11.99 +$3 for shrimp, crispy pork, or chicken) tofu, egg, chive, bean sprout, peanuts, salted radish -"Shrimp" turned out to be prawns, not baby prawns. Not champion-sized tiger prawns either, but respectable enough to be called prawns. -Taste is okay. Like a lot of other things we ordered at Unchai, it hovers around mediocre to good and is therefore disappointing because of the portion of carby stuff compared to other Thai restaurants that just stack on the filling-ness with rice and noodles. Boat Noodles Soup ($13.99) Pork meat, pork balls, pork blood, coriander, green onion, bean sprout, celery. -Not overly sweet but it continues the everything's sweet theme. -Pork blood is dissolved in the soup rather than the boiled chunks. -Taste is okay. More of a novelty than a must-try. Unchai Curry Chicken ($14.99) Red Thai curry based in Unchai style with gai lan, long bean, Thai eggplant, bell pepper, Thai basil -Not spicy at all and on the sweet side like pretty much everything we ordered. -If you need your curry to be spicy-hot, better call ahead and ask first. With the rice this is probably your best bet for bang-for-your-buck filling meal dinner, passable at $15 for the tastiness. read more

Unchai Thai boasts distinctly different Thai flavors. The Pad See Ew is tangier and more texturous than the usual - and the fish curry recommended by our server was delicious- and unlike any other Thai curry I've had. Unchai steers clear of the heavy handed fish sauce and sweetness that many Thai places rely upon. I would visit again - without the kids. Located right on Burrard. It's a cozy local restaurant (around 6 tables). Seems like it's run by a couple, from Thailand. I had a chance to speak with the lady working there and she told me all their sauces are made in house. I'm very satisfied with the khao soi noodles. The portion is small but i left quite satiated. The soup was very rich. The chicken leg/thighs portion was generous. The flavours reminded me of my visit to Thailand! Service was great. Many of the customers seemed pleased with their meals. They have different specials depending on what's in season and which authentic Thai dishes the owners want to introduce to to Vancouver. I will be back. read more

Absolutely delicious food and would come here again and again. That's how good it is. I ordered the signature dish - Boat Noodle Soup with the fresh thin noodle and I wanted to lick the bowl down. It comes with pork meat, pork balls, pork blood, peanut, green onions, bean sprout, celery and cilantro ... Some will be weary of the pork blood, but if you have a good palette and willing to try something with good deep flavors, try this. Also, they have a citrus sauce you can add to take the flavors one notch deeper. If you're not feeling adventurous, don't sweat it! A friend who recommended the place (and other patrons sitting in the restaurant) enjoyed everything they ordered. Pad Thai, Chicken Wings, Tom Yum Noodle Soup. As soon as I saw a Thai restaurant that had roti with curry dip like the Malaysian places I knew I had to check it out we ordered the chicken wings because of the awesome photos we found on yelp and of course the roti both are extremely delicious the dough he wasn't as doughy as most places which made me love it even more it was crisp and light and more thin then roti usually is so I like that a lot you have to get it and interestingly enough it is not on the menu I'm not sure why I think this place is new but I feel like it's been there for a while so I'm not too sure but do check it out and the green curry chicken was legit The staff are super friendly and nice the establishment is clean and appears to have been newly renovated We also let the restaurant know that their Google company information stated they were closed early on a Saturday but it turns out they were open and the yelp hours of operation are correct read more

I've been wanting to try Unchai Thai Restaurant for the last couple of months. Finally made it after a couple of hours playing beach v-ball. It's next door to Mazuya Sushi. We dropped in on a Saturday evening (around 6:45pm). The inside is small with only 16 seats but service is friendly, prompt and the food came out blazingly quick. Just like you're in Thailand. The dinner menu is small and consists of starters, noodle soups and main dishes. About 20 items to choose from. - Thai ice tea ($3.99) - not too sweet but the amount of ice in our drink was unreal. A mini iceberg. - Papaya salad ($7.99) - green papaya, carrot, green bean, cherry tomato and peanut. Nothing special about it. Papaya didn't have much flavour and texture was lacking the usual springy bite. - 2x Roti with curry sauce ($4.99) - this was the best thing we ordered. Roti was excellent and went perfectly with the curry dip. We ordered another one as it's a small portion. - Khao soi curry noodle ($13.99) - we switched the wonton noodles (that normally come with this dish) with their rice sheet noodles. Braised free range chicken leg, turmeric curry, pickled lettuce, shallots, coriander, green onion and bean sprouts. The rice sheet noodles were interesting; silky but a soft bite to them. The curry broth had good creamy flavour. - Unchai curry chicken ($14.99) - red Thai curry with gai lan, long beans, Thai eggplant, baby corn, bell pepper and Thai basil. It came with a side of rice. The curry was flavourful and had a slow build in heat to it. The only complaint we had on this dish was that there was barely any chicken and the eggplant were sliced so thinly. - Pad thai goong ($14.99) - shrimp, egg, chive, bean sprouts, peanuts, shallots and salted radish. Sauce was balanced and sweetness done right. You only get four shrimp so I'd recommend getting the tofu instead. Fairly standard. - Boat noodle ($13.99) - thin rice noodles, pork meat, pork balls, pork blood, coriander, green onion, bean sprout and celery. Always down for some boat noodles. Broth was good but salty; 5 spice is prominent. - Mango sticky rice ($5.99) - mango ice cream, fresh mango, sticky rice, mint and salted coconut cream. The salted element was unexpected but delightful. Ice cream is slightly on the icy side but I believe that was intentional. Some good flavours but portions are a small. 3.5 stars. read more

This is a tiny Thai restaurant on Burrard that seats around 15. The menu is one page and not extensive, but has a variety of soup noodles, fried noodles, rice, and appetizers. Portion is on the smaller side with main dishes around ~$13-15. - Fried Chicken Wings: This was delicious! The chicken wings/drums were very crunchy outside, but moist and tender inside. The tipping sauce is very salty so a little goes a long way. The sauce reminded me of concentrated fish sauce. - Pad See Ew: We were surprised that the restaurant uses thick glass noodles. The noodles were chewy (a little too chewy). Flavour is decent, but we found the dish peppery. - Green Curry: The chicken is tender and the curry had a strong coconut milk and gingery flavour. We wished the curry had a stronger aroma. The issue was the rice. It was too soft so after adding the curry, the rice became mushy. Service is excellent - our server was friendly and attentive. I'm a fan! Service and food was both very good. We came on a Friday night and was immediately seated. Perhaps it is because we came at the right time (around 5:30-6pm), the line was out the door when we finished our meal. Our favourite dish was the pork belly. Delicious garnish, flavourful sauce, and the best part, a perfect crisp on the pork. I recommend this dish 100%. It was wonderful for sharing and probably an amazing dish to be accompanied with a bowl of rice. We also ordered the roti with curry sauce. The roti was crispy and fresh and sauce was flavourful, I would say that we could have skipped this dish, it wasn't as exciting as expected. Our second favourite dish was the flat noodle stir fry (pad ee sew). This dish was amazing. We could taste the wok and flavour was on point. The garnishes gave the noodles a crunch, perfect for munching onto. I never tried the pad Thai but it definitely has made me curious. Their wok dishes will most likely be similar and on par. Lastly, we ordered the green curry. It was probably our least favourite dish. The sauce for some reason was more bitter and less viscous. It needed some tweaking, so we brought it home. 5 prawns for a $24 soup (TOM YUM BLACK TIGER PRAWNS NOODLE SOUP) that is 1/3 noodles was extremely disappointing. The flavor was OK but definitely not close to the best tom yum I have had. The best Thai restaurant we've been to outside of Thailand. Small and unassuming, you need to look for the street sandwichboard for the name. The two things you must get are the chicken wings ($7.99) and the fresh rice sheets! Move over Phnom Penh, these chicken wings are the true crack wings of Vancouver! 6 pieces a portion, so amazingly crispy and crunchy with nice flavours. They were so good that we had to grab some as a take-out snack the next day. The sweet and sour wings are a dollar extra ($8.99) but in our opinion, not as life-changing as they're just wings covered in sweet chili sauce -- still super crispy though. The rice sheets are a silky smooth texture, very rare to find these types of noodles in Vancouver. We ordered the Pad Ki Mao Chicken ($12.99) and it is a smaller portion but a good comfortable one. Lots of veggies as well, but sadly where was the advertised baby corn?? The roti ($4.99) was nice and crispy, really enjoyed the curry. But it's definitely not as good as Banana Leaf's roti canai. New Thai restaurant in the hood offering a small menu and limited seating. Really friendly service and seems to be family-owned. We ordered a pick up order and I tried the Pad Thai with crispy pork (Chinese BBQ style). I wasn't a huge fan of the pork since the skin wasn't very crispy anymore. I would have preferred if they had the option for just a traditional Pad Thai with chicken (not on the menu). The other option was Pad Thai with shrimp which my boyfriend tried and said was good. We also tried the chicken wings which were really crispy and delicious! I love me some tom yum soup but unfortunately they didn't have it on the menu. However, they DO have a tom yum noodle soup but unfortunately couldn't modify it so that I could just have the soup - they said maybe in the future they will add tom yum soup to their menu. Overall, great flavours but limited menu. I hope to return to give it another try. read more

Let me start by saying this is the real deal, authentic Thai flavors in Vancouver, which is rare to find. It's a small restaurant on Burrad with an open style kitchen (be prepared for the aroma to infuse into your clothes) and limited seating. They tend to fill up and you can put your name on a wait list. I've been twice over the last month, and it looks like their menu is constantly changing as when we went the last week in Nov, they did not have Pad Thai or Pad Si Yew on their limited menu. We ordered the crab omelette (which was the only thing that a co-worker could eat bc of the lack of spice). I found it on the slightly salty side, and a bit bland so they brought a spicy green dipping sauce that amped the flavor profile instantly. Also, the chicken wings (spicy & delicious but if it's fried, what isn't?) and and the khao soi noodle soup which is a chicken leg turmeric based soup w/ the thin rice noodles (would be great substitution to boring chicken noodle soup for the cold winter weather). Tip, take the leftover soup and add more noodles, can't let that goodness go to waste. Everything was delicious. I find it on the pricier end for a weekday lunch as the crab rice was on the higher end, but guess everything with the cost of goods/groceries has gone up especially seafood. When we went last Friday, they had Pad Si Yew back on the menu due to demand, but it was not back on the printed menu so I ordered it as it came highly recommended and I love the wide flat rice noodles and gailan, it comes with tiny pieces of chicken and it was great, spicy, tons of flavor, but when I check their previous menus from only 3 months ago, I was charged higher than what was indicated, so think they're still figuring out their menu/price points but hope they keep that on the menu with a consistent price point. Would definitely go back as long as they do not continue to fluctuate their prices so quickly as it would deter me from wanting to keep going back, it's the principle. read more

We decided to try this new place after reading Yelp reviews as it was near my husband's workplace. We got there around 6:15 on a Weekday night, luckily it was not packed yet so we could get a table right the way. The restaurant is small with about 4-5 tables only so be sure to call ahead. We ordered fried chicken wings, roti, pad Thai with crispy pork and green curry with chicken. Everything was delicious! Tasted very authentic, I have a love for small restaurants. The fried chicken wings had a nutty, slightly sweet taste to it, very crispy and juicy. My favourite. Roti was for my little 3 year old, although we kept stealing from him to dip in the curry. So good! Make sure to order some! The green curry with chicken was a little spicy, way less spicy than we were expecting, which is good as it was very flavourful, Hint of coconut taste, light, not the thick and creamy type. The Pad Thai had a good balance of sweet and salt to it, With chopped peanut and chilly powder on the side. Was good, but was not "amazed" like the other dishes. The server was very nice. Cozy little authentic Thai restaurant. The roti was very fresh and crispy, much better than most places in Vancouver that I've tried. We got the Tom yum noodles and the pad kra pao and both were really good. You can tell these were made fresh and seasoned so well. The service was great as well, very friendly and attentive staff. I was in the area and decided to try take-out here. When I came to pick up the order, everybody was lovely and welcoming. I have mixed thoughts on the food. The fried chicken wings were very flavourful and tender - I was impressed. For $7, I thought it was a good deal. We also got the Pad Ga Pao with pork and Chicken green curry. The curry was tasty, however the Pad Ga Pao had a slightly odd taste and smell that was a bit unappetizing. Can't put my finger on it. That being said, I could tell the recipes were homemade and fresh, which is something I'd like to support. I'm open to trying some other dishes here, perhaps eat in, but I wish my first experience was a bit better. The food and the service here are both amazing! Unlike the other restaurants along Burrard which have little to no customers during dinnertime, Unchai was bustling on the Thursday night that I went there for dinner. There was even a short lineup as they were clearing tables. There are also a lot of takeout/delivery orders going out. I was surprised how busy it was. I had the chicken curry and the boat noodles (something I've never tried/seen anywhere else in Vancouver). Chicken Curry (4/5) Pretty standard curry. It had a nice kick and a good amount of chicken/vegetables. Boat Noodles (5/5) Very unique dish. I was debating whether to order this as I had never had it before. However, their server said it was good so I got it. It did not disappoint. All the meat components were extremely tender and the broth was super flavourful. You also get a choice of noodles. I chose the rice sheets which had a nice bite to them. I think the only drawback is their portion size is a bit small. You might need to order 1.5 dishes per person. Would recommend! read more

Upon entering, I'm hit with an overwhelming smell of fish sauce. Jackpot! If that sounds like an awesome thing to you then this restaurant experience is going to be great. Menu is small, maybe a dozen items. Do order the fried chicken wings. They are quite good. The spice coat and thin crispy batter are fantastic. I'm surprised that they didn't marinate the meat or brine it. I think that would have added an extra layer of deliciousness. I came here mostly to try their Khao Soi. It's not a common dish to find in metro Vancouver. I haven't had it in Thailand, so I can't speak to the authenticity. The presentation was lovely. However, overall, I felt the taste was somewhat lacking. The oil had separated from the curry, so I would recommend to stir the curry sauce some more before eating. I wasn't a huge fan of the confit chicken leg. Without the sauce, there was little flavour. The pad siew was great. For us, this tasted much better than the khao soi. I was surprised that they only have chicken and pork as meat options. No beef or prawns. Roti was good, but didn't look like the photos here in Yelp. Basically, it was several pieces of cut up paratha pancakes. Everything was freshly made. It seemed obvious that the long hours of work are affecting the owners. This cozy restaurant's Tom Yum soup noodle (I chose vermicelli) left my mouth burning even well after I left the place. Probably 5 star for the food for 1-2 star for the service. The ladies were really nice when we went in at 5.26pm - 2 of us and our daughter so obviously they had to give us a table for 4. We ordered right away and got our food right away and starting eating right away lol. As people started lining up outside - the ladies I could tell got more and more anxious. Coming to our table every minute ( not joking, it's a small space so it was literally every minute). We ordered a hot soup, so obviously that needed some time to finish ( we got out at 5.53pm) but at this rate it's difficult to concentrate on eating when someone is coming every minute to remove an item from your table or "checking" on you!! It also didn't help someone in the kitchen talking to the staff in a very condescending tone, it's open for Christ's sake, anyone can hear you!!! We packed up what was left and got up. All in all we spent a few minutes more than 30 mins and felt as though we were there to be rushed out for spending our own money!!!! Also I could tell our table was the target as we occupied 4 chairs with a kid!!!!! I guess it's our fault we walked into your half empty restaurant and you seated us there!!!!! We paid 63 with tax for 3 items so its mid range. Having a small space is your choice, and so is how you treat your customer. If a line up outside stresses you this much that your customer gets up within 30 minutes- that does mean something is not right, so think about it. For people who do not eat at light speed - maybe takeout and not eat in. And for the owners, maybe have a sign up saying parents with kids need not come. I order takeout from here - always the green curry with chicken and a couple orders of the crispy chicken wings. One of my favourite meals. The wings are perfectly seasoned and super crispy on the outside, and the curry is so warm and comforting on a rainy evening. I took off one star (really it would be a half star) because I personally didn't think their other menu items (pad thai, mango sticky rice) were very good when I ate in one time, but I do love the curry and chicken. During the many months my wife and I spent in northern Thailand, we fell in love with one of the regional Lanna dishes, Khao Soi. Unfortunately, it is one of those dishes we rarely find in Thai restaurants here in North America. This little restaurant, located just north of Broadway on Burrard produces a version that rivals any I have ever eaten in Thailand. I may even go so far as to say it's one of the best I've ever had (and I've had a few!). Run by a young Thai couple, the restaurant offers not only delicious food, but also quick, friendly service, complete with the ubiquitous Thai smile. Our request for a vegetarian version of the Khao Soi was readily granted with oodles of fried tofu added to replace the chicken thigh. We also shared a green papaya salad as an appetizer that was as authentic, and delicious, as the ones I would buy at the Siri Wattana market. Although many of the reviews here indicate the portions are small, I did not find this to be the case. In fact, by Thai standards, the servings are enormous. After only one visit, I can say with confidence that this is my favorite Thai restaurant in Vancouver. I can't wait to return to try some of their other soups and curries. read more

yyyaaaaas! super excited that this place opened and it's near my home. by far the best version of pad thai that i've had. and also fresh rice sheets (which really is a translucent soft mung bean-esque version). so those who say the portions are small. untrue. we got a pad thai it was normal sized like any other thai rest. but the spring of the noodles reminded me of a great 7am meal i had from a street stall in thailand (granted i was drunk) that did amazing pad thai the noodles just had such a great spring and felt like it was blasted with some solid wok heat the boat noodles were in a smaller bowl but i was full after eating it. it's similar to a santouka/danbo sized bowl of noodles. i got the fresh rice sheets as i've never seen it available anywhere in the city. it's so rare in this city it makes it a destination in itself. the broth has a sweet profile that is unusual, i jazzed it up with some chili powder to balance what i felt was perhaps a overly sweet profile. but to be fair i don't have a good experience with boat noodles to compare whether or not this was the profile of this particular dish. however putting some spice put it into balance for me i was so impressed that i promptly got delivery to my office for dinner the next day. i will never get thai delivery from another place again. read more

Deserves a larger space. Comforting Thai food outside of Thailand. This is at least a once a week destination for me.

The food is very tasty. I love the flavours and they give lots of veggies in the noodles which I love. The only thing I would love to see is bigger portions. The portions are small and for $13.99, I expect a bit more noodles. I always leave hungry so not sure if I will be back. It be great if they had lunch specials that come with a side or something. Otherwise great for those who love thai food in small portions. read more
